Ship experiences Passenger ships
From the end of March, the White Fleet will be sailing from Bregenz to Schaffhausen Time for the moment Take a deep breath, let your gaze drift over the seemingly endless shoreline and simply enjoy the here and now – that is a boat trip on Lake Constance. A glass of wine by the ship’s rail or a delicious meal on-board? A cycle tour or a party night? The fleet of the “Vereinigten Schifffahrtsunternehmen für den Bodensee and Rhein” (VSU) has something to suit every taste. The VSU are an association of Swiss, Austrian and German shipping companies. With their motorised boats, known as the White Fleet, they take visitors to the most attractive corners of Lake Constance. From Easter until late autumn, a comprehensive programme of cruises and excursions provides for a range of experiences as diverse as the region itself. You are free to discover the region and its numerous sights from any one of the major cities by the lake. The White Fleet sails from Constance, Lindau and Friedrichshafen to the very doorstep of any number of attractions, such as the Zeppelin Museum or the Sea Life Centre. With daily cruises on the Obersee, Untersee and Überlinger See as well as along the Rhine, a spontaneous time-out from your everyday routine is always possible. Fun and pleasure with the boat trip experiences Lake Constance is full of life and this is clear for all to see both on land and on the water. The VSU offer a number of boat trip experiences ranging from the suspense of a crime scene dinner through exotic flair with the Mexico ship
to the hearty Octoberfest beer festival. Anyone wanting to offer their mum something special on 8th May can invite her on a Mother’s Day trip. Highlights all year round The international “Flottensternfahrt” has a long tradition in boat trips on Lake Constance: On 30th April 2016, boats from Austria, Germany and Switzerland will meet in Bregenz. Once there, they form a star formation – an impressive manoeuvre that you don’t get to see every day. There are also the legendary trips to the Bregenzer Festspiele, with “Turandot” by Giacomo Puccini on this year’s agenda. The VSU trips are available on several dates in July and August, taking you directly to the floating stage. An on-board menu sets the tone for the evening. Another key attraction is the Seenachtfest in Constance and Kreuzlingen, with its stunning firework display. On 13th August 2016, you will once again have the possibility to experience this event at first hand. And the boat is the best place to marvel at the magical fireworks. Winter programme Even in winter, the shipping companies offer a rich and varied programme: in the period before Christmas, Advent trips are organised with Satnta making an appearance on board. And for anyone wanting to welcome in the New Year in a special way, what could be better than a New Year’s cruise.

Visiting fallow deer, storks and the monkey gang For more than 30 years, Salem near Lake Constance has been home to Germany’s largest and most attractive open-air monkey enclosure. More than 200 playful Barbary macaques are free to romp around a 20-hectare stretch of woodland. The particular design of the park allows the animals to live in natural surroundings as they would in the mountainous regions of their native Monrocco and Algeria and to remain outdoors all year round thanks to a very similar climate. The Barbary macaques share the idyllic area around the ponds, populated by numerous water birds and carp, with an impressive, freely-flying breeding colony of white storks and a graceful herd of fal-
low deer. Instead of bringing together numerous animal species in a small space, Affenberg Salem has only a few species which nevertheless live in ideal conditions. Visitors can see the animals up close without being separated by fences or ditches. The extensive information provided includes numerous display boards, the monkey review with interactive elements, feeding times with the guides (see below for times) and a film show. In addition to the open-air monkey enclosure, the welcoming restaurant and the large adventure playground offer a couple of extra reasons to stay a little longer.
The trails are suitable for pushchairs and wheelchairs while the site also offers handicapped toilets and a large free car park. Affenberg staff feed the animals at specific times, providing lots of interesting information about their protégés. The legacy of the Cistercians At the heart of a vast park and garden complex sits the former Cistercians monastery and current Salem Palace. In 1802, it became the property of the Margraves of Baden before passing into the hands of the Baden-Württemberg state palaces and gardens office in 2009. The complex can trace its origins to the Middle Ages when the town of Satlmannsweiler was donated to the Cistercian order in 1134 for the purposes of building a monastery. The abbey quickly became one of the most important such sites in southern Germany.

Salem enjoyed a second heyday during the Baroque era, as the magnificently furnished abbey buildings – still the family seat of the Margraves of Baden – bear witness even today. Salem has been preserved in almost unrivalled authentic condition since monastic times: the magnificent architecture and furnishings testify to the wealth and understanding of art of the Salem monks and take visitors on a journey through the centuries. The new monastery museum in the prelature with the branch museum of the Badisches Landesmuseum Karlsruhe presents “Masterpieces of the Imperial Abbey”. The new Salem Fire Museum in
the Sennhof presents a unique collection of pumps and equipment including some genuine rarities such as historic hand pumps, steam-driven pumps and motorised pumps. A sunken world heritage site made visible Welcome to the lake dwellings of Unteruhldingen! In the Lake Dwelling Museum, history comes to life by Lake Constance: 23 reconstructed houses from the Stone and Bronze Age (approx. 4000 - 850 BC), numerous reproductions and original finds transport visitors to a fascinating sunken world. In the villages under the water, many things have been preserved that would otherwise have rotted away including Stone Age breads, wooden spoons, fabric remnants and thousand-year old wall paintings. They all testify to how people lived by Lake Constance. That is why UNESCO designated the “pile dwellings around the Alps“ a world heritage site in 2011.
The “ARCHAEORAMA” multimedia show in the Lake Dwelling Museum uses the very latest media to explain what this underwater heritage looks like. The adventure starts in the virtual divers’ changing room. Video animation then plunges you beneath the water. An impressive 360-degree projection in the last room retraces history – from the Ice Age to the Bronze Age. You then reach the lake dwellings by means of wooden bridges stretching out into Lake Constance. The special exhibition entitled “The legacy of the pile dwellers” presents more than 1,000 original finds. As part of the Stone Age trail, trying out and participating are part of the ex-
perience. The museum is barrier-free, easily accessible with push chairs and labelled a family-friendly venue.
TIP The events calendar is completed by means of special events: Special programme in the Stone Age trail during the holidays. During the “ARCHAE-X” days, groups of historic characters await visitors to take them into an exciting world by means of numerous presentations (for times see www.pfahlbauten.de); 31st July museum festival; 9th October Stone Age apple festival.

There is so much to find out about steam engines. Generations of enthusiasts have made a world from paper using the model-making sheets from the Schreiber company. A cabinet is entirely devoted to the enchanting Hummel figures and their origins. It’s not just little girls who are delighted by the bears’ theatre and the lovingly furnished art nouveau doll’s house.

Campus Galli – the Carolingian Monastery Town, Meßkirch You are welcome to visit the construction site! More than 1,200 years ago, monks on Reichenau Island drew up the perfect plan for a monastery. In addition to a large church, the plan also included craftsmen’s houses, stables and gardens to ensure the monastery was self-sufficient. Having been left for centuries gathering dust in the archives of the abbey library in St.Gallen, this plan is now being put into practice. It will be several decades until all the buildings shown on the plan for the monastery are finished. In the meantime, visitors have the opportunity to watch the craftsmen at work.

Terms and conditions Dear visitors, the following translation of the terms of use for the BodenseeErlebniskarte are exclusively provided as part of our service offering and for your better understanding of these terms. Only the German version is legally binding. 1. Position of parties, contractual basis 1.1. The service providers mentioned in the brochure “Bodensee Experience Guide“ provide the cardholder with BodenseeErlebniskarte (BEK) services as described in the Bodensee Experience Guide. The service contract is made between the service provider and the cardholder in particular and through explicit agreement or use of these services. 1.2. The contractual basis for the particular provision of services by the service provider are the terms and conditions and conditions of carriage of the service provider, as far as these become effective contractual content in accordance with legal requirements. 1.3. Solely the service provider is obligated to provide respective services in accordance with the contract that results from a service claim. Internationale Bodensee Tourismus GmbH, hereinafter „IBT“, regional tourist agencies and BEK sales points are neither contractual partners in relation to services, nor contract agents. They do in particular not act as travel agent. 1.4. The right of use lies exclusively with the cardholder or entitled companions, in accordance with the service description. 2. Services 2.1. Service partners are only obligated to service provision in the framework of general conditions of their business operation, in particular in consideration of advertised performance periods, opening hours and general performance prerequisites (e.g. weather conditions). 2.2. The operation hours of some service providers do not cover the complete validity period of BEK, especially due to weather or season-related circumstances. In this respect the service scope is limited to the current, respective and customary business hours of the service provider. 2.3. Tourist agencies, system operators or third parties are not entitled to make commitments, agreements or to provide information that differ from, or are contrary to the advertised services of the service partner. 2.4. As for services that are used via the card outside of the valid service description for the card usage, also in other advertising material (host directories, brochures, catalogues, websites), the cardholder can solely claim the services according to the respective service description for the card usage. This applies in particular, if the service description for the card usage differs from other service descriptions. 3. Service providers’ rights to refuse performance 3.1. The BEK bases a service claim and the conclusion of respective individual contracts with the service providers only in the framework of legal regulations and the general availability of the services.
58 | Bodensee Experience Guide SUMMER
3.2. The service providers are entitled to general legal service refusal rights. They are particularly entitled to refuse the provision of a service and the conclusion of contracts in individual cases, if objective reasons oppose to the conclusion of a contract or the performance of a service; this particularly accounts if cardholders or other accompanying persons do not comply with necessary requirements for the service provision (e.g. equipment, health conditions, check-in times). 4. Card validity 4.1. The validation period regarding the duration period in which card services can be claimed depends on the type of card chosen and on the seasonal validity after the details provided on the card (summer edition or winter edition). Relevant details for this purpose can be found in the Bodensee Experience Guide. 4.2. The card is only valid for the season it was purchased for and therefore not transferrable to the next season. 4.3. In case of non-utilisation of the card a reimbursement or diminution of the card value is ruled out, unless the non-utilisation is partly or entirely caused by a culpable violation of contractual obligations of IBT. 5. Card holder duties and liabilities 5.1. The BEK is not transferable and is only valid with a valid photo ID. It can only be used by the person mentioned on the card. 5.2. In order to claim services, the cardholder is obliged to show his/her original BEK and to present it to the service provider in electronic form or for visual inspection before the conclusion of an individual contract about a service claim. 5.3. The cardholder is obliged to present a valid photo ID upon request. If he/she is not able to do so, the service provider can refuse the conclusion of a contract about the provision of a particular service, or the provision of a service. 5.4. For age-related services and benefits for the cardholder or his/her entitled dependents, the service provider can request a corresponding proof of age. 5.5. When a BEK is stolen or lost the cardholder is obliged to report this incidence immediately at the number +49 7531 909499, whereby there is no entitlement for a free issuance of a new card. 5.6. The cardholder is liable towards IBT and the service providers for damages from a responsible or concurrently responsible, culpably abusive use of the BEK by himself or by third parties. © These terms of use are protected by copyright; RA Noll, Stuttgart, 2007-2016
