ACTIVE HOLIDAYS Lake Constance is a paradise for fans of water sports and water in general with everything from swimming pools to sailing schools. From spring to autumn, the alpine regions are perfect for walking and mountain biking. e 273 kilometre Lake Constance Cycle Track takes cyclists around the whole lake. Golf lovers can choose from 27 fantastic golf courses in the region and the hinterlands.

Constance is hip. e town is an attractive tourist destination with its historic town centre with narrow lanes and magnificent cathedral, its varied cultural scene, and not least the Island of Mainau that also belongs to Constance.
On the border triangle between Germany, Austria and Switzerland, Lindau is the southwesternmost town of the Free State of Bavaria and a jewel in the crown of Lake Constance. e historic old town centre with its famous harbour entrance is situated on the largest of three islands in Lake Constance.
St. Gallen
History buffs should visit the UNESCO World Heritage Sites around the lake. e abbey district of St. Gallen was included in the list of World Heritage Sites in 1983. e textile museum in St. Gallen offers fascinating insights into the past and future.
Bregenz
Bregenz Festival in July kicks off an unparalleled annual cultural festival set on the world’s largest floating stage against the beautiful natural backdrop of Lake Constance. Friedrichshafen

Meersburg boasts an impressive medieval fortress as well as a Baroque castle complex. Idyllic narrow alleys and beautiful squares directly on lakeshore are ideal for a stroll or a rest.
Aviation fans can enjoy two aviation museums in Friedrichshafen: e Zeppelin Museum and the Dornier Museum, with its light installation by James urrell.
Liechtenstein
Birnau pilgrimage church, which was designated a minor basilica in 1971, is surrounded by vineyards and offers breathtaking views of Lake Constance.
Culturally minded visitors with a broad range of interests will feel at home in Liechtenstein. Despite its small size, the principality boasts museums devoted to art, national history, the postal service and winter sports/skiing, as well as numerous exhibitions.

e Untersee, or Lower Lake, at the westernmost end of Lake Constance on the SwissGerman border is a well-kept secret for many holidaymakers. Flanked by attractive hills, its diverse landscape and variety attract many visitors. Everything that makes the Lake Constance region so appealing can be found here in a small area: natural shorelines with a unique flora and fauna, islands and peninsulas, fantastic bays and gently rolling hills, all set in beautiful surroundings. e lake straddles the Swiss-German border here, and it is easy to cross from one country to the other from shoreline to shoreline several times in the course of a day. Romantic towns and villages as well as numerous monasteries, castles and palaces bear witness to the region’s rich past. Outstanding examples include the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Monastic island of Reichenau with its Romanesque churches, and the medieval town of Stein am Rhein with its historic painted facades. Visitors can follow in the footsteps of famous personalities who once lived here, such as Hermann Hesse or Emperor Napoleon III. e annual Garden Rendezvous on the Lower Lake showcases the region’s horticultural tradition. After all the “Hortulus,” written on Reichenau Island in the Middle Ages, was the first manual for gardening and herb-growing. e Lower Lake is also one of the most significant ornithological regions in Central Europe with numerous species of birds. is is not the only reason why all leading German nature protection organisations and the Max Planck Institute for Ornithology are based in Radolfzell. ere is plenty to discover here, not only for nature lovers.

Stein am Rhein has one of the most beautiful and best-preserved medieval town centres in Switzerland and is famous for its magnificent painted façades. Take a step back into the Middle Ages on a walk through this lively little town to admire its architecture and the murals on its houses. Your tour guide will accompany you through the picturesque lanes and recount exciting tales about past times and current events. Arenenberg, often called the “most beautiful castle on Lake Constance,” exudes world history. Perched high above the Swiss shores of Lower Lake, it was home to Napoleon I’s step-daughter Hortense de Beauharnais after the emperor was overthrown in 1817. is castle facing the Monastic island of Reichenau is also where her son, later Napoleon III, learned all he needed to know for his role as the last emperor of the French. Today, the estate houses an educational and advisory centre as well as the Napoleon Museum urgau complete with the original furnishings of its former inhabitants and numerous mementoes from the days of the emperor. e castle is set in the heart of extensive parkland near the Swiss village of Mannenbach-Salenstein on the edge of a steep slope leading down to the shores of the Lower Lake.
Medieval dinner in Constance’s Council Building: The Council Building (Konzil) was and still is one of the most impressive locations in Constance. is massive building dating back centuries sits directly on the shores of Lake Constance. Behind its mighty walls, where goods were once traded, feasts held and popes elected, there is now a unique restaurant. Enjoy a tasty “Council menu” and hear first-hand accounts by the chronicler Ulrich Richental of life in the days of the Council of Constance from 1414 - 1418. In April 2014, a grand exhibition entitled “A Medieval World Event” in the historic Council Building at Constance’s harbour opens the 600th anniversary of the Council of Constance from 2014 - 2018. e Badische Landesmuseum presents artistic and cultural testimonies of the highest quality from Europe’s great museums. Visitors can rediscover the town’s history over the four years of the anniversary with pageants on Münsterplatz square, costumed guided tours, cross-border thematic paths and music from six centuries. e celebrations are rounded off with topical discussions and artistic experiments, making Constance once again the venue for European discourse.

The Lower Lake is one of the most significant ornithological regions in
Central Europe with numerous species of birds. On a guided tour of the Max Planck Institute for Ornithology, you can gain an insight into the institute’s work, find out about the scientists working there and current research projects. On a short tour, you can explore the premises and the visitor centre MaxCine. Discover the Lower Lake on a guided cycle tour – while the warm breeze from the lake refreshes your senses, you can enjoy the unspoilt lakeshores and idyllic villages around the Lower Lake. e Monastic island of Reichenau on Lake Constance was included in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites on 30 November 2000 as a cultural landscape that bears outstanding witness to the religious and cultural role of a great Benedictine monastery in the Middle Ages. Immerse yourself in the past on a tour of the monastery district and discover exciting facts about the founding of the monastery in 724 A.D. A further highlight of the tour is the church of St. George with its impressive murals. Take a look behind the scenes of the flower island on Lake Constance: On an informative tour through the park, you can learn about the history, the botany and other interesting facts about Mainau Island, including an insight into the work of Count Lennart Bernadotte’s family. Round off this experience with a walk through the Italian rose garden – the fragrance and colours of the roses will enchant you! On a boat ride from Mainau Island to Überlingen, experience Lake Constance at its best and see many of its sights from the water. e boat takes you past the museum of lake dwellings in Unteruhldingen and Birnau pilgramage church. Just lean back and enjoy the views. Überlingen – take a ride in a horse-drawn carriage through Überlingen. On a 60-minute tour, you can find out amusing and interesting facts about the town’s history and culture.
