Comparative Levelling

Many of the literacy programmes in this catalogue follow custom band colouring/levelling respective to the suggested reading ages of the material. To allow quick and easy referencing, we have applied a comparative levelling to those programmes loosely based around the PM colour scale. You'll see our colour coding running down the side of certain programmes – labelled 'comparative levelling'.

INTRODUCTION

An introduction to guided reading

FOLENS

“The ultimate goal of guided reading is to help children learn how to use independent reading strategies effectively.”

(Fountas and Pinnell 1996:2)

What is Guided Reading?

The Professional Development Service for Teachers (PDST) summarises guided reading as follows:  Teacher works with 4-6 students in each group  Using levelled/banded readers and multiple copies of these readers  Children are grouped according to similarities in reading and development and instructional reading levels  Teacher introduces/consolidates strategies and concepts to support independent reading  Every child reads and is supported by teacher

Literacy Initiatives

Reading Recovery is a patented programme with training courses available at education centres around the country. Developed in New Zealand by Marie Clay over 20 years ago, Reading Recovery is an effective early intervention literacy programme widely implemented in English-speaking countries throughout the world. The goal of Reading Recovery is to dramatically reduce the number of students who have difficulty learning to read and write. Professional development is an essential part of Reading Recovery. Literacy Lift Off is a particularly popular literacy intervention initiative which brings a lot of the theory of Reading Recovery to the class room. It is sometimes knows as Power Hour, station teaching or guided reading. Children are given lots of opportunities to read books at their own level of competency and gradually lift the complexity of what they can do in both reading and writing. This has been proven to be highly successful in improving children’s literacy levels.

“The right book in the hands of the right child at the right time.” – Stephen Graham, Literacy Expert, Melbourne, Australia Getting Started

The backbone of any literacy initiative is a systematic approach, benchmarking children to determine their starting point and identifying and improving individual children’s ability based on their instructional level of reading rather than their age or class level. Our local Sales Representatives have vast experience in working with schools undertaking such initiatives and are here to advise. Look to us as the experts in advising the solution to your needs in the classroom.

FLYING START TO LITERACY

The simplest way to introduce a literacy initiative in your classroom All titles are available in themed pairs. Comprehensive lesson plans accompany each pair through the series. Lesson plans contain before, during and after activities and can be split into four 30-minute instructional sessions and one review session. At Emergent level, Vocabulary Starters are available to build vocabulary from an early age.

“As a staff we gave careful consideration to all schemes available on the market. We selected Flying Start to Literacy over PM+, as there was evidence of sensitive levelling, the content of texts were attractive and the use of all genres across the levels, would provide our students with a scaffold to writing in the style of that genre. We aim to utilise these texts in Literacy Lift Off, so that each child is reading, writing and comprehending at their instructional level.”

-Anne Marie Macken, Scoil Angela, Thurles, Co.Tipperary

BLUEBERRY HILL BOOKS

Teachers choose Blueberry Hill Books because they work! Children choose them because they make reading fun! Blueberry Hill Books are carefully levelled storybooks which develop basic concepts such as colours, shapes, numbers, rhyme and prepositions that help to develop the necessary knowledge base for future reading. When read in sequence, the Blueberry Hill Books ensure consistent repetition of new learning within each level and as a bridge to each new level. The title Clever Patrick and the Golden Grove Leprechaun was co-written by pupils from a Roscrea School.

“We use Blueberry Hill Books for our Literacy Lift Off programme. The books are Reading Recovery levelled. They are bright and interesting, engaging all the children.”
