Many of the literacy programmes in this catalogue follow custom band colouring/levelling respective to the suggested reading ages of the material. What is Guided Reading?
The Professional Development Service for Teachers (PDST) summarises guided reading as follows: Teacher works with 4-6 students in each group Using levelled/banded readers and multiple copies of these readers Children are grouped according to similarities in reading and development and instructional reading levels Teacher introduces/consolidates strategies and concepts to support independent reading Every child reads and is supported by teacher
Literacy Initiatives
Reading Recovery is a patented programme with training courses available at education centres around the country. Developed in New Zealand by Marie Clay over 20 years ago, Reading Recovery is an effective early intervention literacy programme widely implemented in English-speaking countries throughout the world. The goal of Reading Recovery is to dramatically reduce the number of students who have difficulty learning to read and write. Professional development is an essential part of Reading Recovery. Literacy Lift Off is a particularly popular literacy intervention initiative which brings a lot of the theory of Reading Recovery to the class room. It is sometimes knows as Power Hour, station teaching or guided reading. Children are given lots of opportunities to read books at their own level of competency and gradually lift the complexity of what they can do in both reading and writing. This has been proven to be highly successful in improving children’s literacy levels.

PM OVERVIEW
The original and most widely recognised book-banded reading scheme Developed to build reading skills, PM is the original book-banded reading scheme for primary school children, offering over 900 carefully levelled fiction and non-fiction books for whole class guided or independent reading. PM is used extensively worldwide and is suited to reading initiatives such as Reading Recovery, Literacy Lift Off (also known as Power Hour) or any other literacy scheme. PM WRITING
Teaching children how to write in different text types and genre PM Writing is the only comprehensive levelled writing programme on the market. It is designed to explicitly teach the essential skills students require to compose texts. Exemplars for Teaching Writing are big books which present and deconstruct text types, highlight key language features and includes teacher notes and a CD for use on the interactive whiteboard. The 94 levelled readers model text types and are designed for guided writing and independent reading. Levels 1-15 are single text types and levels 16-30 are dual text types. The texts examples of genre, text type, text form and text structure, and thereby assist in linking reading and writing processes. The simplest way to introduce a literacy initiative in your classroom All titles are available in themed pairs. Comprehensive lesson plans accompany each pair through the series. Lesson plans contain before, during and after activities and can be split into four 30-minute instructional sessions and one review session. At Emergent level, Vocabulary Starters are available to build vocabulary from an early age.
