LIFE IN SPACE Have you ever wondered what life is like for an astronaut, living and working in space? The way astronauts do ordinary things like eat, drink, wash and sleep is all affected by weightlessness. Can you imagine trying to eat a bag of popcorn when it all escapes and floats around you? How about going to sleep – would you float out of your bed and bump your head on the roof? And as for going to the toilet ... Luckily there are many clever devices and systems which have been developed to make life for astronauts as much like being on earth as possible!
FOOD
On space missions you can’t just pop out to the supermarket for fresh fruit and vegetables! A supply of food big enough to last for the entire mission must be packed and brought along. When space travel first started, food was bite-sized and there was very little variety. Now however, some fresh food can be eaten, as there are fridges on board. The food must be nutritious for the astronauts, light, easy to prepare, and easy to clean up – crumbs floating around the space station are not a good idea! Food can be freeze-dried, packed in pouches or in plastic containers – very like microwave meals here on earth. Drinks need to have straws or special lids to prevent spills. If you tried to drink an ordinary cup of tea it would float away drop by drop! Astronauts strap themselves to their seats so they won’t float away while they’re eating. Even cutlery can be attached to the table by strings! 48
