BRAZIL Geography
Brazil is the biggest country in South America and the fifth biggest in the world. It shares a border with every South American country except Chile and Ecuador. It has a huge coastline – over 7,400 kilometres long. Brazil has a largely tropical climate. Brazil is home to the largest part of the Amazon Rainforest, the biggest tropical forest in the world, where a third of the world’s trees can be found. It also has rugged hills, coastal plains and grassland areas. The arrival of Europeans in Brazil 500 years ago led to the beginning of the destruction of huge areas of forest. Most of the Atlantic rainforest is now gone. The Brazilian government has established areas of preservation, but they only cover a small percentage of the country.
Animals Brazil has a bigger variety of animals than any other country in the world. There are 600 different species of mammals, 1,600 species of birds, 1,500 species of fish and over 100,000 different species of insects in Brazil. It is thought that the rainforest also holds millions of plants and animals which have yet to be discovered.
It’s an exciting time for the people of Brazil, as they get ready to host the FIFA World Cup in 2014 and the Olympic Games in 2016. Let’s take a look at this fascinating country with its great mixture of stunning scenery, sporting success and cultural diversity.
Some of the animals which can be found in Brazil include the capybara, anaconda, caiman (the South American alligator), tapir, sloth, armadillo, jaguar and puma. Its rivers are home to the flesh-eating fish, piranhas, which have been known to attack and even kill humans.
History It is thought that the first humans arrived in Brazil 32,000 years ago from the Pacific Islands. People from Asia later settled in Brazil also. Europeans first arrived in the late fifteenth century, led by Portuguese and Spanish explorers. People from Africa were brought to Brazil to work on the plantations as slaves. When the Portuguese first colonised Brazil, there were 30 million indigenous people living in Brazil. Today there are only about 300,000 remaining, most of whom live in remote regions. Brazil won its independence from Portugal in 1822. Independence Day is celebrated every year on 7 September.
