Christmas Markets Around The World
A Christmas market is a street market associated with the celebration of Christmas during the four weeks of Advent. These markets originated in Germany, Austria, Northern Italy and France. They are now held around the world and are growing every year in popularity.
Munich airport, Germany
Munich has led the world in Christmas markets since establishing its own one in 1545. Now it has gone a step further by turning its airport into a 21st century version for travellers who do not have enough time to make it to the city centre. There are about 50 stands in the passenger terminal which offer all the traditional Bavarian specialties from mulled wine to gingerbread and sausages, as well as traditional handicrafts. A skating rink sits in the middle, surrounded by 300 Christmas trees.
St. Petersburg, Russia
In St. Petersburg the Christmas market is a very international food affair with many countries fielding stands with their own national dishes. Visitors can find a wide range of traditional Russian handicrafts including stacking dolls and furry ear-muffs which are perfect for keeping ears warm in the sub-zero weather! There is also an ice rink and children’s theatre to entertain adults and children after their shopping.
Budapest, Hungary
Budapest is full of spectacular hot baths where you can bathe outside in hot water of about 38 degrees while the snow is falling. You can even play chess in the water before getting a massage indoors! Other activities include skating in one of the largest outdoor rinks in Europe and shopping for traditional handicrafts including Hungarian embroidery, porcelain and local artisan jewellery.

Are we there y Christmas Who Am I ? You will need: a pen and some post-its How to play: Choose a Christmas character. It could be someone from a book, a film, or even Santa himself! Write the name on a post-it and stick it on another player’s forehead. Each player then has to ask questions to work out who they are. Take it in turns to ask a question which can be answered by ‘yes’ or ‘no’. The first player to guess correctly is the winner!
In my Christmas stocking I found ... You will need: just your memory! How to play: The first player starts by saying ‘In my Christmas stocking I found ...’ and adding in a Christmas present they received. Of course, it doesn’t have to be true! You can make it trickier for your opponents by making the item very specific: ‘In my Christmas stocking I found an Eiffel Tower jigsaw puzzle with two pieces missing ...’ The next player must repeat the items that came before, then add in one of their own.
Christmas Songs You will need: just your memory! You need two teams for this game – it’s a good one for playing with adults against children! The first team starts singing a Christmas song. After they have sung a line or two the second team shout out a word from the song. The first team must then start singing a new song with that word in it. Count how many songs they can keep this going for until they give up! Now it’s the second team’s turn to see if they can beat this score.
Alphabet Game You will need: just your memory! Can you think of a country or place, a boy’s name, a girl’s name and an animal for each letter of the alphabet? Take it in turns to put them together like this: I went to Armenia with my Aunt Alice, Uncle Albert and an armadillo. I went to Barbados with my Aunt Beth, Uncle Bob and a baboon.
See how long you can keep this going. If you forget one of the items, you’re out! The winner is the last person left in the game.

Winter Sports Skiing
Skiing dates back thousands of years. It originated in Scandinavia and the word ski comes from an Old Norse word for ‘split piece of wood’, suggesting the primitive nature of the earliest skis. Cross-country skiing, or touring on skis, is the closest form of modern skiing to prehistoric skiing.

Luge and Bobsleigh
Alpine skiing takes place on a slope and includes Downhill, which is very fast and Slalom, which involves skiing through gates or poles.
A luge is a small sled for one or two people, ridden feet first down a sloping, winding, ice track. Steering is done by body movement. In modern bobsleigh (or bobsled), teams of two or four race down narrow, twisting, icecovered, concrete tracks on light, low sleds with steel runners. These sports began with the adapting of toboggans and delivery sleds for racing on street slopes and hillsides, but this was dangerous and they are now run on specially made tracks.

Figure Skating
tock.com
Figure skating is like a combination of gymnastics, dancing and ice skating. Skaters jump, spin and spiral as they travel around an ice rink. Pairs of skaters also include lifts and throws in their routines. Jumps include the salchow, axel, loop, flip and lutz. Spins include the haircutter, shotgun, corkscrew and camel. Ice dancing is a form of figure skating that is beautiful to watch, as skaters perform choreographed routines to music.
