Women’s Quarterly™ Magazine – is an Online Community + Digital + Print – publication that focuses on the total woman. We are advocates of promoting a full circle healthy lifestyle – mentally, emotionally, physically, financially and spiritually. We feature women with amazing stories on our website and in our magazine.
LETTER FROM THE PUBLISHER
Thank you for your interest and support in Women’s Quarterly Magazine. If you read my letter in our launch edition – you read that the inspiration for WQ is in memory of my sister who among other things, had to deal with people being unkind to her. She went through life feeling like she didn’t have a voice or a support system. As the resident lioness, I will not tolerate anyone being rude and unkind to my staff. Empowering women should be more than a hashtag. We should all practice mindfulness and think about how we treat people in our everyday lives. Black Lives Matter should be more than a black box on our social media feed. Support our women of color – in career, in business, in life, in your manner of speech. Respect each other. Control the urge to act entitled. Just because someone has a certain job title, status or large social media following does not give anyone the right to go through life and be unkind. I mentor young women in college. Please let’s set a good example for them, by first being an example. We want these publications, as well as, our website to give women a voice. An avenue to tell their stories to inspire, support and empower other women. Be the light. Peace and Blessings,
Ilene Carol

LETTER FROM THE EDITOR Being a woman comes with immense power and responsibility. We are not just wives, mothers, daughters, aunties, and best friends to the people in our lives. We are women, a powerhouse within our own right. I think sometimes people celebrate women for the relationships they have to others; but truly just being a women is something to celebrate. The last five years have been the most eye opening and self-empowering of my life. I have broken free from an abusive relationship, met the love of my life, graduated with my masters degree, got my first job in my career path, made my first big girl purchase, spent nine months growing the most beautiful being I’ve ever seen, became a mother, and experienced love, loss, and more joy than I know how to quantify. In just five years I’ve gone from the lowest point in my life, to the highest, and then to a point of comfort. I have found an inner strength that I didn’t know existed within myself. Every woman takes a different path to find that strength, but it’s there. If there is anything that this last five years has taught me, it’s that I am worthy. It is my sincere hope that every woman finds the thing in their life that shows them their worth. Whether it be children, a dream job, travel, accomplishing bucket list items, or just being comfortable in her own skin. I pray that we as women spend more time promoting that positivity; being an advocate for women and continuing the conversation about equity among all races, genders, socioeconomic statuses, and religions. Humanity should be afforded to all.

ASK THE EXPERTS
Transitions: Career Women vs. Entrepreneur and Vice Versa In my professional career I’ve come across all types of professional women from independent business owners and entrepreneurs (like myself), to women in business focused on climbing the corporate ladder. It’s very common for people to separate a person’s professional life into two categories, entrepreneur and career women. These days there seems to be less of a straight line from education to one career meaning that more often than not, people bounce around exploring and learning to find their one true calling of passion where one could devote time in service for the exchange of money. There is no wrong or right path yet the joy is always in journey. In my own career I’ve experienced both working for someone else as well as working for myself. And sometime these jobs even overlapped. The difference for me rests on my passion for the creative arts and discovering something that I love doing and also allows me to earn a living. That’s what I call a “win, win” situation. Often career-oriented women choose a career or at least an area of focus before she even goes out into the world to find a job. For some, this can be a very fulfilling career path and for others it can sometimes feel disenchanting leading to job hoping and bouts of unemployment. It is often at this time many start to consider and explore other career options such as becoming an entrepreneur. To start here are a few questions you can ask yourself; are youcreative, are you able to handle time of uncertainty, are you tenacious and posses a ‘never give up’ attitude even when times are tough, do you have a passion, do you have a vision for your passion,do you have a high level of self-belief,are you disciplined and able to manageyour own schedule, priorities and life. After getting through these questions you just might want to take a job behind a cosmetics counter in a department store and call it a day. But the sacrifice is creative expression, freedom and unlimited earning potential. As an entrepreneur how you live your life becomes part of your business operation and the two become intertwined. As a career woman your personal life becomes separate from your daily job yet the managing of your personal life more often than not seems to be at odds with your career. No matter what is going on in your personal life, it still needs to be managed; hence the arguable trendy term of “work/life balance” comes into play. If this sounds familiar then why not consider taking the time to explore the entrepreneurial path. Sometimes baby steps are necessary to create an inspired life of passion that leads toward success as an independent business owner and entrepreneur. There will be times as an entrepreneur that you will need to lean on something to make it through the challenging times. For me, the one characteristic that not only helped propel my own business but is also the foundation of everything I do and think is self-belief. For me having a strong “belief” system is everything. One of my favorite quotes is by Mark Helprin, “As long as you have life and breath, believe.” So whether you choose a specific career path or choose the entrepreneurial path never stop believing in yourself. You can create the life of your dreams. ~Tina Panariello Tina Panariello, currently resides in Brooklyn, NY and is an accomplished entrepreneur, nail art technician, author, mentor and coach. THE SKIN CARE PRODUCT THAT CHANGED MY LIFE By Madison Park

womanhood. However, this issue will focus on the tools that can equip women for victorious lives. -10 Tips for Combatting the wage gap -Budgeting/saving advice to educate viewers on skin care products and ingredients. In Hyram’s video “The BEST Skin Care Under $10,” he suggests using The Ordinary’s Niacinamide Serum. I was intrigued, as I had never heard of this product before and it only cost $5. The Ordinary’s website states the Niacinamide Serum is cruelty-free and vegan and does not contain alcohol, gluten, nuts, oil, silicone, parabens, sulfates. After reading reviews I was sold. I hurriedly ordered the serum, as it is often sold out.
-Healthy ways to cope with stress/anxiety -Meditation guide -Perspectives from women outside the US feature clearer. If I got acne, it faded quickly and was much smaller than before. My skin appeared smoother and brighter. After several months of now using this product I can tell you that it is liquid gold for skin care. I highly suggest that everyone try it, even if you don’t struggle with acne. I also suggest checking out The Ordinary’s other products, and Hyram’s other skin care videos. I was told it could take a couple months for the serum to make a difference, but within a few weeks I could tell my skin was

BEAUTY & STYLE Get the Best Out of Your Mascara and Take Your Lashes to the Next Level By: Thuy Tran
applying multiple coats of mascara. Try applying one coat first and let it set while you move to the next step of your make-up routine, then come back to put on another coat and so on. This will prevent you from having one thick chunky coat.
This essential product can go from being your best friend to your worst enemy in a blink of an eye and finding the perfect one can be a lifelong mission and battle. You don’t have to go through this alone. Here are 7 tips and tricks to get the most out of your mascara and change your lash game, forever. Tip 1: Get the right one. If you feel like your lashes aren’t looking like the way you’d like them to, maybe you are using the wrong one. Just like humans, mascara wands come in all different types of shapes and sizes—you just have to find the one that meets your needs. There are endless types of wands out there for every type of lashes. Here are a few examples: Classic wands: If you want a more voluminous result, this style of wand is the one you need! Tampered comb wand: The comb-like bristles on this wand will help you separate your lashes and perfect for full coverage but not volume. Curved comb wand: The wand imitates your lashes’ natural curl, so its purpose is to curl the lashes while preventing it from clumping. Tip 2: Wiggling instead of sweeping. Here’s a trick to effectively cover all of your lashes while separating them at the same time. Use the wiggling effect. To achieve this, just lightly move the wand from side to side, in a zig-zag motion from the root of your lashes to the tip as opposed to sweeping motions. Tip 3: Give it some time to set. Doing make-up is already time consuming, the last thing you want is to wait for a product to dry. However, allowing each coat to set is important when
Tip 4: Primer Primer Primer. Yes, lash primers are a thing and they do wonders for your lashes. Before applying mascara, swipe on a coat or two of lash primer and let it dry for thirty seconds for that extra length, curl and volume. Your lashes will be thanking you! Tip 5: Dried-up mascara? Ever had to throw away an expensive mascara just because you thought it was empty? Contact solution is not just a solution for fixing dry contact lens but also dried-up mascara tube. Squirt a few drops of saline solution into your mascara tube and gently mix it. The wet formula of the contact lens solution will help add moisture and consistency to the dried mascara. Tip 6: Use it as eyeliner. You can kill two birds with one stone by using mascara as eyeliner. The trick would work best using a creamier mascara. Just use any eye makeup brush to apply the product to your lash line. Tip 7: Getting messy? Applying mascara can get messy. Try using the card trick. All you have to do is place a business sized card behind your lashes to keep the product from getting on your lid or eyeshadow and apply your mascara. WQMAGAZINE.COM WINTER 2021 30
Heels or Flats? By: Sade Bolling They’re stylish, they’re colorful, they come in many different sizes and comfort levels, they’re shoes. One thing about shoes is, everybody has a favorite style or pair, but have you ever stopped to think that that nagging pain in your back may not be due to working out or lifting heavy objects, but based on the shoes you wear?
Types of shoes: When trying to figure out what type of shoe will really make a statement with a particular outfit that you are planning to wear, women have quite a selection of choices to consider. Some of the shoe styles women may choose from include wedges, ballerina slippers, lace-ups, canvas shoes, flip flops, loafers, mules, Gladiator sandals. To dive deeper into the shoe journey, we also match our type of shoe with the particular outfit or occasion we are attending. There is no surprise that when dressing professional, you are most likely to wear a pair of flats or a short- heeled shoe. If you’re going out for a date or night on the town, you may turn to your favorite pair of heels (or simply a pair of cute flats).
The effects of certain shoes: No matter the style of shoe you wear, they all come with their own disadvantages. Did you know that if a woman wears high heels on a daily basis, she is at risk for developing joint pain due to the shoe’s lack of shock absorption? It also can cause callouses, shortened Achilles tendons, pain in the lower back, and sprained ankles. High heels aren’t alone in this situation, though. Wearing flat shoes can cause you a bit of pain as well. Flat shoes with no support have been noted to cause: Plantar Fasciitis, fallen arches, tearing of tendons, ingrown toenails, bone infections, and an assortment of back, hip, and knee problems.
Keep that pep in your step: With all these things being said, how do you feel now when deciding what shoe to wear? Don’t be fooled, you can still wear these shoes, just in moderation. Also, consider adding extra arch support when wearing shoes that have little or no arches.

Dating safety: Don’t let them steal more than your heart
When your grandparents started dating, chances are they knew each other already or had mutual friends. In those days, a blind date - going out with someone you hadn’t met or knew nothing about - was a rarity. Today, with the boom in online dating, going on first dates with strangers is commonplace, while dating a friend seems like the “old-fashioned” approach.
First, be careful what you share in your profile. Never provide your full name, phone numbers, personal email addresses, home address, or other potentially identifying information such as where you work. Use the website’s built-in tools for contacting and communicating with other members.
Be wary of requests for personal information such as where you bank or what you are doing 24/7. And be careful to not reveal potentially valuable information, such as your mother’s maiden name (a frequently used identifier for Plenty of people find love online every year, but online accounts). Instead, report the individual to the website’s security team; there’s never any reason for someone you’ve just met (or haven’t yet met) to make that kind of request.
Safely connecting online Joining one or more dating websites can be a great way to meet people you might enjoy spending time with. Yet, nearly half of online daters fail to verify the authenticity of a potential match before communicating, according to a survey conducted by Impulse Research on behalf of ProtectMyID. By following some basic safety guidelines, you can help ensure the experience is as positive as possible and minimize the risk of being targeted by cyber criminals who frequent dating sites.
While you’re bringing so many new people into your life, keep an eye on your credit and financial accounts to ensure you detect fraud quickly. An identity theft protection service like ProtectyMyID can help you monitor your credit and know sooner if your identity has been compromised. ProtectMyID uses daily Internet scanning to determine if your information appears on suspect sites or chat rooms that specialize in trafficking stolen credit card numbers. And identity theft resolution agents provide personal assistance to resolve new identity theft issues.
Communicating safely Once you’ve made initial contact, be smart and cautious in your communications. These free services allow you to have a voice conversation over the computer without revealing something as personal as your cell phone or land line number.
Meeting for the first time When you take the next step and meet in person, always take precautions. Meet in a public place and make sure a trusted loved one knows where you will be, who you are with and how long you expect to be there. Keep your cell phone handy and consider arranging a check in with a trusted friend. Drive your own car to the meeting or arrange for your own taxi; don’t rely on your date for transportation. Adhere to the safety basics that you always have in place when you go out, including always keeping personal items and your drink in your possession and leaving unneeded ID like your Social Security card at home. If meeting your online date requires longdistance traveling, you need to be even more careful and smart. Make sure someone at home knows your travel plans and schedule. If you’re arriving at your destination by plane, do not accept a ride from the person you’re meeting and don’t agree to stay in their home. Instead, arrange for your own rental car or taxi
Finally, if something doesn’t feel right or you feel pressured, end the date immediately. Trusting your gut can help protect you from an unpleasant or unsafe experience. – (ARA)

PUTTING THE SPOTLIGHT ON AUTHORS & COACHES Five Simple Ways To Create A Fresh You in 2021 By Elysia Stobbe #1 Best Selling Author Wow! What a challenging time we live in. We have much more overall volatility in our daily lives in many areas and across multiple sectors than in most years past. For many of us, over the past 9 months our emotions have been running on high alert with no end in sight. Thank goodness for New Years and the chance to hit the reset button! While we may not be able to control the economy, our industry, the stock market or the pandemic, we do have the option of controlling our emotions. The new year is a great opportunity to start off with a clean slate and create your own masterpiece. Every day is a new chance to make small changes. Consistent small changes have momentum and can produce a huge positive change. Here are my five favorite simple tips you can do now to create a fresh you in 2021: Health - yes, I know you’ve heard this before. If you’re not a health guru, don’t let it paralyze you, take small steps and reward yourself with pampering. You can start off with deep breathing and stretching. Get outside and go for a walk or take a midday dance break. It’s more important than ever to step away from your computer and take a few minutes for yourself. Gratitude - take a few minutes each day to think of at least three things you are grateful for, this will improve your overall mood. A consistent practice of gratitude can help you build stronger relationships and overcome challenges. Connection - make time to spend with those you love. Be present and genuinely connect with those who are important to you. Focus - Set goals (write them down) and spend at least 10 minutes a day doing one thing that will get you closer to your goals. Pick a word for 2021. Think of it as your overall theme for the year. Write the word down, include its definition, what it means to you, why it’s your word and put it somewhere you will see it every morning and evening. Read it outloud at least twice a day. When you are browsing through the TV channels, you most likely will see Heather on a Television Commercial, Infomercial, Talk Show, Movie or even Hosting a Red-Carpet event. You name it, Heather does it all. From TV hosting to Acting-dancing to choreography-being in front of the camera or helping behind the scenes-Heather is passionate about her work as a TV host and actress. Heather’s pride and joy is her studio that she opened in Akron, Ohio called The Crown Studios. She specializes in private training for Modeling, Pageant Preparation, Dance Performance/Choreography, Public Speaking, Interviewing, Acting, Etiquette, and overall Image and Personal Development. Her goal is to help all her students get the correct training they need and connect them with the right people to fulfill their dreams.
She just finished filming a movie starring Dean Cain produced by JCFilms. “It’s a Christian-based film called, “A Patriot’s Day” that has to do with veterans dealing with PTSD. My father was a Captain in the Vietnam War. The second I read the script I knew it was a movie I wanted to do. All the projects I do I want to be inspirational and better people’s lives. Whether I’m doing a coaching session with a student who wants to gain better self-esteem or starring in a movie that uplifts the audience, I want my message in my life to mirror that of someone who is a role model to everyone and someone who lives to inspire and empower people to be the best they can be in life.”
Do you have a motto or mantra, if so, what is it? H: Absolutely, it’s “Carpe Diem.... Seize the day, trust no tomorrow.” You never know what tomorrow may bring. I was a hospice volunteer for many years, and I learned a lot from the patients I helped take care of. The biggest lesson I learned was that we’re not promised tomorrow so don’t put off the things you want to do today. Also tell the people you love how much they mean to you. You may never get a second chance.
Why the transtion from PA to Ohio? H: With everything that’s happened this past year it really made me put life in perspective. I wanted to be close to my parents, sister and nieces. Family is everything to me. I grew up in Akron, Ohio so it’s nice to be back where I grew up. Born and raised in Akron Ohio, Heather got her start competing in the Miss America Scholarship Program. She landed a modeling contract at age 21 and booked her first commercial that same year. From there she has gone on to be in hundreds of TV commercials, website commer-

Why did you start this school?
definitely someone that helped me become the dance teacher I am today.
H: I always knew I was going to own my own studio someday. When I was in elementary school I was bullied. With the help of my parents enrolling me in dance classes and cheerleading I overcame the sadness and destruction that bullies can do to a young person. I vowed when I was younger that I was going to open up my own studio where when students and parents left my studio, they would always feel a sense of joy and fulfillment. Something I had not gotten from any school I went to. There would be no bullying because I would run the studio and I would not tolerate bullying. I told myself that I would teach everyone of all ages to stand up for themselves and others. So that’s the first part of the story on how I became a studio owner. So back then I really thought it was just going to be an etiquette and self-esteem building school. But it turned into so much more. My life took a huge turn for the better when I started competing in pageants and modeling. I competed in the Miss America scholarship program where I won many titles including Miss Greater Cleveland and Miss Akron. When I was finished competing, a lot of the girls I competed with wanted me to coach them because I did do well in all areas of competition. I would win talent, interview, swimsuit, community service, congeniality, interview, public speaking... Because I trained every single day in all areas of competition. So, people took notice, and they knew I knew what I was doing and that’s how I became a Pageant Coach. Growing up taking dance classes, my main dance teacher always had her favorites, and I was not one of them. So, I vowed that when I opened my studio everyone would be my favorite. I eventually met some amazing dance teachers. One in particular was Jeanette Thagard of Patty’s Dance Center located in Newark, Ohio. In college I would drive two hours at a time just to get training from her. She was the first dance teacher that truly believed in me and helped me believe in myself as professional dancer. She’s
This story really all blends together because after I competed in the Miss America program I got signed with a modeling agency and from there I did print modeling, runway modeling, acting, TV commercials, TV Hosting.....you name it, I did it. And I studied and I trained hard. I did receive my Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Akron with a major in communications and minor in dance performance. I must say, the best training I ever got was when I was on set actually doing the jobs and throwing myself into a project blindly. It was absolutely nerve-racking it was very intimidating, but I got over that real fast. I knew if I wanted to be successful in TV and acting, I needed to overcome my fears and just do it. So here I am 20 years later, and I am a successful television host, actress, model, and studio owner. All the knowledge and experience I have gained I pass on to my students. I don’t hold anything back and I expose them to as many opportunities as possible. Heather inspires everyone to pursue their dreams and never give up.” No matter what people say, you have the gifts and talents within you to achieve anything you want.”

How have you been coping during this pandemic?
How would you sum up your personality?
H: I am very very careful. I have not gotten Covid, H: I’m happy, positive, driven, understanding and but I know people who have gotten it. Some have become very very sick and are still in the hospital. I know people who got it and they were better within a few days. It amazes me how this virus affects people differently. It’s a huge reality check for everybody. My studio is private one-on-one training so that really helps not having groups of people coming in. It also helps parents and students feel safe. I am and have always been a cleaner. I clean and disinfect everything. I have done everything possible to maintain a safe/clean environment for everybody.
What is your favorite quote? H: My favorite quote is, “it’s never too late to be what you might have been!” -George Eliot I love this quote because no matter what age you are or where you are in your life you can always start following your dreams and pursuing your passions. I have so many people say that they’re too old to start learning the piano or dancing or they’re just too busy to study something they’re really passionate about.
a lover of life and people. I love to see people succeed. I am very upbeat and positive, I get this from my mom and dad – growing up they were such a positive influence on me, so they have passed this personality trait down to me. I get excited about life and the little things. I welcome people into my life with open arms. I know who I am, and I always stay true to myself. I’m always laughing and finding the positive in situations...laughing is the best cure for just about anything.
What is your best advice you give to young women? The best piece of advice I could give anyone is to not listen to the judgment and opinion of others. If someone tells you you’re not good enough or you can’t do something, my advice is to prove them wrong. Don’t let anyone hold you back. Anyone who truly loves you and believes in you and is your friend would be encouraging no matter what. So, let all those negative people and comments go; be you and do the things you love to do. You can accomplish anything if you put your mind to it.
I have students who have started acting at 50 who never acted before. I have students who come to me for dance lessons who just started training when they were 30 years old. I have students who didn’t start competing in pageants until they were 65 years old. You can do and be anything you want to at any age and at any time. This quote resonates with me because it’s my goal in life to help people find the gifts within themselves, live their truth and pursue their passions. Sometimes people just need a little nudge.

GIRL POWER FEATURE
YOLANDA MOORE
Considered one of the most resilient players to ever play in the WNBA, Yolanda Moore is one of the founding players of the WNBA. One of the top 15 high school female basketball players in the country, Moore received a full athletic scholarship to The University of Mississippi (Ole Miss), where she went on to be coached by Van Chancellor as a power forward. Becoming pregnant at the age of 18, Moore gave birth to her first child during the summer of her freshman year. Despite what some saw as a setback, Yolanda came back her sophomore year and became the second leading scorer on her team and was selected 2nd Team All-SEC. By the time she finished her career, Yolanda earned two first team All-SEC selections as a junior and a senior, an Associated Press All-American Honorable Mention, and was named team MVP her junior and senior year after leading the Lady Rebels in both scoring and rebounding in both her junior and senior campaigns. She currently ranks 9th on the Ole Miss Scoring Chart. Moore participated in the Houston Comets’ open tryouts in May of 1997, just four short months after giving birth to her second child and a year after having her third knee surgery. Through sheer will and determination, Yolanda beat out more than 200 women to earn one of only four remaining spots on the Houston Comets’ roster, despite being told she should give up any plans to play professionally by Van Chancellor and 2008 US Olympic Women’s Basketball Assistant Coach, Peggie Gillom. She went on to play four seasons in the WNBA, winning two championships with the Houston Comets in 1997 and 1998 and also played in Europe and Asia. Yolanda travels the country teaching and empowering students of all ages in the areas of Goal Setting, Academic Success, and Career Planning through her interactive workshops and seminars. She is the author of the inspirational book “You Will Win If You Don’t’ Quit” and is a frequent guest on radio and television talk shows throughout the country. Yolanda holds bachelor degrees in English and Radio & TV, a master’s degree in Workforce Educational Leadership, and an Educational Specialist degree in Instructional Technology. WOMEN IN BUSINESS
MEGAN E. FOX Tell me a little about yourself. My name is Megan Fox. People seem somewhat fascinated by my name which I find funny. Just for the record, I actually am the OG! I worked for renown brands in the fashion apparel, footwear, and outerwear industries for more than 15 years. And now I’ve been bitten by the entrepreneur bug. I’m the Co-Founder and CMO of GenXWoman, a digital media company for the women of Generation X. I’m also a Style Coach, helping women style their mindset and define their signature style. You can find me on Instagram @styleafoxy.
Why did you start GenXWoman? My friend Dena (and now business partner) and I met at our last corporate job and found that we had common interests and work experiences. We both loved Sex & The City and were looking for that type of girlfriend bonding at this point in our lives to share in some of the things we’re facing in our forties. But we also wanted to have fun, not commiserate. We were challenged with finding it whether that was digitally or in person. It was like we weren’t being considered and there was a huge void. So, we created it. And that’s how GenXWoman came to be.
Tell me what GenXWoman stands for. It started out with having a community of women around our age inspiring and supporting each other. And then we started looking more at our generation, Generation X. It’s not just a term to identify a group of people based on the year they were born (Pew Research uses the years 1965-1980). We noticed it also came with negative rhetoric and we were appalled by it. How could our generation of hard working, self-motivated, independent, strong, well established, badass women (and men) still be dubbed as “slackers”? And why weren’t we given credit for our accomplishments, consistently being glossed over in the media? GenXWoman is about celebrating how much we’ve accomplished, what we’ve gone through, and where we want to go. It’s about embracing being in the prime time of our lives and offering solutions to the challenges Gen X women are facing. And it’s about standing up for ourselves and working to change the narrative of Generation X. We have voices and we know how to use them. As Gen X women, we truly believe this is our time.
