Welcome to Issue 116 of Iceni Magazine!
It's December so, you guessed it, our focus on this month is... Christmas. As we gear up for Christmas, so does the stress involved to ensure Christmas Day runs smoothly. Check out Pages 40-41 for 4 helpful tips to reduce stress and help yourself. Christmas is generally seen as the time for giving, but during these difficult economic times, if could be a time to give something back. Jill Roberson on Pages 46-47 tells us how we can help look after the communities helping us.
Elsewhere in this issue, Tim Barnes-Clay reviews the Dacia Jogger (Pages 20-21) and explains if it wasn't for a big downside, he would highly recommend it.
Before we sign off for the year, it wouldn't be Christmas without the pop rock'n'roll, flamboyance and pure fun of Slade (Pages 44-45) as they announce they're coming to Norwich - Waterfront on Sunday 18th December 2022.
Until next month, we hope you enjoy the Christmas period and we'll see you on the other side! www.icenimagazine.co.uk

The Benjamin Foundation
For over 25 years, children, young people and families across Norfolk and Suffolk have been supported by The Benjamin Foundation to overcome big challenges in their lives.
Each night, we accommodate up to 200 vulnerable young people, equating to over 50,000 safe nights’ sleep a year. They can finally feel safe from youth homelessness.
Each week, 150 young people access our emotional wellbeing support improving their mental health, increasing their self-esteem to finally feel understood.
Each year, over 400 young people attend our youth work in the community to gain new life skills, expand their horizons and finally feel confident. Overall, in the region of 2,000 local children and young people every year finally feel hopeful of a better future because of the work of The Benjamin Foundation.
Award Win For
Norwich Reuse Drop Off Centre
Our charity is celebrating after winning a prestigious Reuse Network award. The accolade recognises the work of The Benjamin Foundation, in partnership with leading waste and resource management company, FCC Environment, to promote reuse and prevent waste, while creating social value and raising funds to support young people in Norfolk and Suffolk.
We were presented with the Reuse Network’s Innovative Project of the Year award at a ceremony last month to recognise and celebrate the success of the Norwich Reuse Drop Off Centre which opened in June 2022. The Innovative Project of the Year award recognises originality, inspired ideas and acknowledges those who have worked hard to implement them. We have transformed the former local authority operated recycling centre on Swanton Road, Norwich to an innovative, first of its kind for the UK, reuse drive through and drop off centre, making reuse in Norwich more accessible and convenient than ever.
The project is already making an impact by giving new life to pre-loved items. These are sorted, with good quality furniture and household items being sold in The Benjamin Foundation furniture stores in Norwich, Holt, Dereham and King’s Lynn to raise money to support the charity’s work with young people in Norfolk and Suffolk. Since opening, over 500 people have visited Norwich Reuse Drop Off Centre to donate pre-loved items, resulting in over 60 tonnes of reusable items finding a new home.
“The Norwich Reuse Drop Off Centre is a champion for a change of thinking – not just encouraging people to donate their pre-loved goods, but the drive-through facility makes

Issue 116 2022
it easier than ever for them to do so,” explains Paul Sinclair, The Benjamin Foundation Operations Manager.
The result is that new life is given to second hand items, the amount of waste going to landfill is reduced, and vital funds are raised to support local children and young people who access services provided by The Benjamin Foundation.
Paul continues: “We are delighted to be presented with the Innovative Project of the Year award in recognition of our work. We are so proud to work in collaboration with FCC Environment to promote reuse, reducing waste and enabling local people to do their bit for the environment. Money raised from the sale of items helps to fund our work with children, young people and families in Norfolk and Suffolk, supporting them to make positive changes in their lives.”
Liam Bould, Regional Development Manager for FCC Environment said: We are immensely proud at FCC to reopen a closed recycling centre and turn it into a reuse hub for the residents of Norwich. We operate over 100 HWRCs across the UK and have a reuse solution on virtually every site. It amazes us how much gets thrown away that could easily be reused. The facility in Swanton Road now allows the local residents of Norwich to drive-thru and donate items to a wonderful charity in The Benjamin Foundation; avoiding waste and supporting local families. The opportunities are endless with the drop off centre and we are excited to continue working in partnership with our charity partner to create a sustainable space for the residents of Norwich.”
The Reuse Network is the UK’s only membership body dedicated to charitable and voluntary reuse organisations. Working with their network of members, they are reducing poverty, tackling waste and offering a brighter and better future for the most isolated individuals in society.
The Norwich Reuse Drop Off Centre is located on Swanton Road, Norwich, NR2 4LH and is open Wednesday to Sunday 9am - 4pm (closed Public Holidays).

Norfolk National Garden Scheme 2022
The season of gardens opening in Norfolk for the National Garden Scheme has now finished for the year.
Despite challenging conditions for garden owners across the county, Julia Stafford Allen, County Organiser reporting on a record year said, ‘we are very grateful to our garden owners who put a lot of work into their open days, and not only have they opened their gates to provide beautiful and inexpensive green spaces for people to enjoy, but they have also, in doing so, raised an amazing £119,145.00.’
Thanks, must also go to the many visitors who turn out in all weathers to appreciate the gardens. Funds raised will go to Macmillan Cancer Support, Marie Curie, Hospice Uk, Queen’s Nursing Institute, Carers Trust, Parkinson’s UK along with the garden and health charities: Horatio’s Garden, Maggie’s, and ABF The Soldier’s Charity.
Applications are now open for The National Garden Scheme Community Garden Grant awards. If you are involved with a community garden, why not apply for funding.

Old Buckenham Players’ 2023 Pantomime
Robin Hood & The Babes In The Wood
Following the success of their East Anglian debut of Give Us A Sign in September, Old Buckenham Players are proud to present their 2023 panto offering: Robin Hood & the Babes in the Wood, by Ben Crocker.
Having produced sell-out shows of Camelot the Panto and Dick Whittington in the last two years, both of which were also written by Ben Crocker, our audiences are in for another riproaringly funny and high-quality show. Now fully immersed in the magical and wonderful world of pantomime rehearsals, we can’t wait to show you the results of our hard work and dedication.
This show really is a laugh-a-minute, 100mph treat for the senses thanks to the superb script, experienced cast, technical wizardry, wellknown songs and of course, the much-loved characters. Join Robin Hood and his band of Merry Men as they carry out their famous redistribution of wealth plan. But standing in their way is the wicked Sheriff of Nottingham and his hapless sidekick, Dennis. The Babes, recently orphaned Tilly & Tommy, are the Sheriff’s niece & nephew, and when he learns that their family’s fortune would go to him upon the Babes untimely demise, a dastardly plan is set in action. So now, not only does Robin have to save the lovely Maid Marion from the Sheriff’s marriage demands, but he also has to work with Marion’s Nanny, Winnie Widebottom to rescue the Babes from certain doom! As well as the well-known locations of Sherwood Forest and Nottingham, you’ll visit such places as the village school, the dungeons and the One Doored Tower of Doom [insert dramatic chord here!] as you find out if our heroes really can save the day.
Pantomime is as much about the audience as it is the actors on stage. And so, we challenge you to come along to Boo, Hiss, Clap and Cheer louder than you ever have done before! Through hard work, dedication and years of experience, we’re confident you won’t find a better night out for a tenner anywhere. You never know, you might just enjoy yourself so much that you’ll fancy giving it a go yourself!
Performances are held at Buckenham Village Hall and start at 7.30pm on Thursday 19th, Friday 20th & Saturday 21st of January 2023, with the ever-popular Matinee performance on the Saturday starting at 2.30pm. Where Has This Year Gone?
By the time you read this, I will have been in my new home for a full year, which is mind boggling.
It’s crazy how quickly the last twelve months have passed.
When I first moved out to the countryside, I will admit I was a little unsure if I had made the right decision. Finding myself in a cold and dark house on a wet December day, surrounded by boxes and with no wifi or phone signal was a little daunting, and my first Christmas here was a rather cluttered and low key affair.
But the heating went on, boxes were gradually unpacked and eventually spring arrived, showing me the delights of my new (and first ever) garden. This place is a perfect fit for me I have realised. I love my new home as I gradually make it my own, and my neighbours have all been lovely and welcoming. Yes, I can sometimes be seen walking around the streets holding my phone in the air as I search for a signal, but honestly, it’s the only blip on my radar.
And now I get to celebrate Christmas properly, albeit a little differently, as the Beev clan - like many other families this year I imagine - are cutting back a little in these more challenging times. Rather than all buying presents for each other, we have done a Secret Santa draw and will buy and receive one gift. And we will be scaling back on the Beev Christmas Day cheese board, which is a sight of wonder and fit for a banquet. This is not necessarily a bad thing as Beev bellies love cheese and we always end up pigging far too much then feeling sick.
Instead I shall take pleasures in the smaller things. Decorating my new tree, which thankfully I bought in the January sale, playing boardgames, and binging on festive movies to get me in the spirit. Then of
course there is the Turkey & Tinsel meal I do with friends every December.
Each year we have a theme. Nativity. Glamorous. The 12 Days of Christmas. This year is Retro as we take a trip down memory lane to our childhood Christmases, and there will be Babycham, black forest gateau and plenty of old school party games. I can’t wait.
Whatever your plans are for the festive season, I wish you all a very merry Christmas and a happy New Year.
My new book ‘The Sleepover’ is available in kindle, paperback and audio format. The kindle copy can be purchased here

Do You Give Away Your Power?
How would you feel if you suddenly noticed that someone who knows you really well was choosing to wind you up, was deliberately referencing ‘sore points’, making digs and, at times being quite sarcastic?
How frustrating, hurtful and annoying would that be, when someone who knows your trigger points is deliberately using them? That fact alone can often be the most upsetting part of incidents like that.
Yet, if we internally acknowledge what others are doing and choose not to react it can help us reclaim our power and our equilibrium! An indifferent shrug, ‘whatever’ or smile, rather than ‘the usual’ anger or tears, can catch them off balance and defuse a potentially escalating situation.
When we choose to react differently, we get a very different response! By choosing not to be triggered and instead stay calm and in control, we cause there to be a shift in power.
Of course, there are sure to be times when other people’s attitudes, opinions or actions may anger or infuriate us, but that’s part of co-existing with others in the world, part of a live and let live approach to life. We may be incredulous that someone could think or feel the way they do, may wonder or even speculate that they must be joking, but being an advocate of free speech means supporting others’ rights to their points of view, even when we disagree, perhaps even vehemently.
Staying calm and untriggered, being prepared to engage in a reasoned, respectful discussion allows both sides to explore previously unconsidered viewpoints and arguments.
DO YOU GIVE AWAY... Issue 116 2022 Twitter: @icenimagazine Instagram: icenimagazine Facebook: www.facebook.com/icenimagazine PAGE 14 www.icenimagazine.co.uk
This may result in real ‘ah ha’ moments for us, gaining insights and awarenesses that perhaps never even occurred to us before. But there may well be other times when we decide not to engage. We may feel it’s not worth the effort or emotional investment and so choose to simply smile and leave well alone!
However, equally and less explosively, staying quiet can also be a way to give away our power. When we say nothing, we silently allow other people to make assumptions and reach decisions that impact on our lives. ‘Anything for a quiet life’ gives other people permission to go ahead and make their choices as they wish.
If we later object they can validly respond by saying that we should have spoken up and said something at the time; how were they to know the way we were feeling, they’re not psychic after all! In those situations, we can only hope that the people who know us really well, who purport to care about us, will make good and respectful choices with us in mind.
But this is a very passive way to live, taking no responsibility and no proactive engagement about how we’re feeling, what we want or how we’d like to spend our time.
Eleanor Roosevelt reportedly said, ‘we teach people how to treat us’. As an adult it’s important that we accept responsibility for our part in successfully communicating within our relationships. Other people have their own lives and associated stresses to contend with, all things which will likely distract and
preoccupy them. Our wellbeing won’t always be uppermost in their minds. Grown-up relationships require more engaged responses than those between a parent and child. As adults, there are consequences to giving away our power. If we expect other people to take charge, we can’t then complain about the outcome. We’ve effectively given them permission to behave that way; something we need to remind ourselves of when we give away our power.
Whenever we let others decide on our behalf it can, after a time, become the norm for them to find it increasingly easy to make most of the decisions, claiming they ‘know what’s best for us’ or that they want to help us improve. There may even on occasion be a backlash, times of resentment if we demur and say ‘no’, or insist on doing our own thing.
Learning to be appropriately assertive is important. Using phrases like, ‘this doesn’t work for me’, ‘leave it with me and I’ll get back to you’, ‘I can’t do that at the moment’, may well buy you a little time to walk away from any immediate pressure to decide right now. You’re then able to reflect on what you want to say and do in order to determine the most effective way to respond.
This also succeeds in reminding other people of your presence, that you too have opinions and priorities in your life. You learn to stop giving away your power; all steps towards a more positive, mutually respectful relationship.

Eight Tips To Achieve A Better Night’s Sleep
Many of us seek a proper night’s sleep on a regular basis.
Achieving such a thing will certainly enable you to face the day brighter and with far more energy.
Without decent sleep, you are bound to feel lacklustre and find it challenging to focus on work or other tasks. Sleep-deprived, you will be more likely to become grumpy and stressed whenever the smallest of problems occur. Being less alert can also affect your safety (and that of others), meaning you lack concentration, which can be dangerous when you are driving, working or trying to do anything that requires
faster reactions and your full attention. Luckily, there are many steps you can take in order to achieve a better night’s sleep on a regular basis.
Read on for eight tips we hope will help.
1. Form a sleep routine
Not everyone realises this but following a routine every night promotes a better quality of sleep. Just like babies and children need help to almost train themselves into falling asleep and waking up at the same time, us adults sometimes need to do this, too. Doing this also ensures you get the desired amount of sleep necessary to fully function every day.
Issue 116 2022 Twitter: @icenimagazine Instagram: icenimagazine Facebook: www.facebook.com/icenimagazine PAGE 17 EIGHT TIPS TO... www.icenimagazine.co.uk
An example of this would be to head to bed at 10:30pm and wake at 6:30am, getting eight hours of sleep each night. Sticking to this routine for just a few days in a row should start to show you how much more rested you can feel. Doing this for a while helps to create a habit. Of course, it isn’t always easy to just fall asleep. However, don’t be tempted to get up and return to bed later, otherwise you are defeating the object.
After carrying out this routine for a while, you will begin to feel tired when it’s close to bedtime and wake up naturally without the need for an alarm (although please do - we don’t want to be held responsible for you sleeping in and missing work!).
2. Increase your physical activity
Exercising every day allows you to burn energy that may otherwise still be pent up in your body at bedtime. The best way to combat this is to be more active throughout the day. Incorporate some activity into your regime where you can, such as heading to the gym first thing in the day, heading out for a stroll at lunchtime and taking the dog for a walk each evening after returning from work.
For the most effective outcome, avoid exercising too close to bedtime, as you may find that you are too hyped up to fall asleep.
3. Stop napping
Staying awake during the day and being alert can be challenging when you haven’t slept well the previous night. Some people believe that the obvious solution is to take a power nap or two during the day. Unfortunately, doing so usually creates a vicious cycle of not being able to sleep at night, making you more tired and wanting to nap again the following day. Often, these naps will increase in length over time, moving from power nap to a more established one.
Try to avoid naps wherever possible, especially in the late afternoon. Although it may take a few days, you are likely to find that soon you will have a better quality of sleep at night.
4. Avoid caffeine
Caffeine is a stimulant, increasing a body’s energy and focus. For this reason, it is best to stop caffeine intake several hours prior to bedtime. Science shows that caffeine can continue to impact your body for a few hours after drinking it. If you are aiming for that 10:30pm bedtime, avoid any coffee or caffeinecontaining soft drinks after around 3pm every day.
Try to substitute your usual coffee for a decaf and energy drinks for flavoured sparkling water instead.
5. Stop screen time long before bed
To ensure your mind and body are both ready for a good night’s sleep, it’s vital that you stop screen time at least one hour before bedtime. Switch off the TV, put your phone on do not disturb (and place it out of reach), and shut down your laptop or desktop computer.
EIGHT TIPS TO... Issue 116 2022 Twitter: @icenimagazine Instagram: icenimagazine Facebook: www.facebook.com/icenimagazine PAGE 18 www.icenimagazine.co.uk
Although it can be tempting to catch up on social networks or watch a few funny cat videos on YouTube before bed, doing so means your brain will remain alert and wired, causing you difficulty in falling asleep.
For some of us, it won’t be possible to switch off entirely because of working practices, perhaps. In these cases, try using blue light screen protectors or blue light glasses. These counteract the blue light that LED screens emit (which keep your brain active). This will help you to calm down and be ready for bed sooner, even whilst still accessing most devices.
6. Develop a calming bedtime routine
While we have already discussed having a routine in terms of timings, it is also worthwhile creating a calming regime, ensuring that your body and mind are both relaxed and ready for bed. Consider taking a bubble bath (not too hot), listening to relaxing music, pampering yourself with scented lotions (lavender is a great sleep aid) or practising meditation.
Relaxing is different for everyone. Pick something that you find calming and roll with it, such as colouring, doodling, writing, stroking a pet! All these options can help to calm your senses to help you be ready to fall asleep more quickly when your head hits the pillow.
7. Avoid heavy eating before bed
Eating a heavy meal too close to bedtime can definitely impact the quality of your sleep. It can hinder the natural production of melatonin (a hormone your body produces that is necessary for sleep) within your body.
Of course, it is fine to snack on something light up to about an hour before bed. Choose something high in protein and low in carbs, if possible, as this fill you up and prevent hunger during the night.
8. Create a relaxing bedroom
A relaxing and comfortable environment is essential for a decent night’s sleep for so many people. Try to keep the temperature not too hot or cold, meaning you are content under the covers. Ensure that your room is clutter free, as this can affect your mind, impacting your ability to fall and stay asleep.
Sleeping in loose cotton pyjamas or a nightdress will prevent overheating and sweating during the night, which can cause you to wake up and be restless. Playing gentle music or white noise may help you to slip into your slumber more effectively.
Most people should aim to fall asleep within 15 minutes of lying down. This gives you the best chance at the ultimate night’s sleep. Tossing, turning and lying awake too long mean that your body will not relax and you will not achieve your goal of eight hours’ sleep.
Good luck with establishing an improved sleep routine. We hope these eight tips help you to achieve your goals.

Dacia Jogger Review
By Tim Barnes-Clay. Follow on Instagram: @tbarnesclay
Dacia is known for building budget cars, but what you might not realise about the manufacturer is that it’s also got a reputation for excellent value.
Sure, you’d be nuts to buy a Dacia and expect BMW or Mercedes-Benz quality, but the truth is its cars punch well above their weight.
The Jogger is a people carrier, with its roof rails and cladded bits of bodywork giving off an impression of off-road and workhorse abilitiesand it seats seven people.
It is good-looking and comes packed with equipment that defies its low price tag.
Even entry-level models come with cruise control, rear parking sensors, Bluetooth and digital radio, plus advanced emergency braking.
An eight-inch infotainment screen is added to the mid-range trim, which also gets parking sensors, a rear-view camera, automatic
wipers, electric windows, air conditioning, and keyless entry.
I tested the top-of-the-ladder Extreme SE trim, so I also got SatNav, traction control, heated front seats, a leather steering wheel and LED lights.
The engine specs aren’t anything to write home about, but you get a 1.0-litre three-cylinder turbo and a six-speed manual. However, a hybrid with an automatic transmission is coming next year.
Somehow, though, Dacia has made the Jogger very light, so it accelerates reasonably well and has plenty of grip in the bends when taken at speed.
The steering provides a surprising amount of feedback, too, so it’s anything but dull to drive. Meanwhile, the suspension setup is a good compromise between firm and comfy.
Admittedly, as it’s a seven-seater, you might find these characteristics don’t resonate with your

journey if you’ve got a car full of passengers. But at least when driving alone or with only a couple of people on board, it’s decent.
A small powerplant means decent fuel economy, so 48.7mpg is achievable, according to official specs.
For the money, it’s simply brilliant.
Oh, hang on. I know what you’re thinking: “There’s got to be a catch somewhere”.
Sadly, you’re right. The big downside to the Jogger? Its one-star safety rating from Euro NCAP.
Oh, dear. Never have I felt so frustrated - the Jogger has so much going for it.
Were it not for that, it’s a car I’d highly recommend.

Culinary Delights: Uramaki Handmade Sushi Company
Sushi is recognised as vinegared rice that has other ingredients, such as cooked or raw fish. The translation of sushi is ‘it is sour’, which reflects the vinegared aspect.
Sashimi is traditionally served without rice, consisting of salmon or tuna, for example.
In translation sashimi means ‘pierced fish or body’. Nigiri is a type of sushi which has rice and Wasabi paste topped with raw fish or other seafood. All are utilising the freshest, highquality fish and other ingredients.
The URAMAKI HANDMADE SUSHI COMPANY was founded by Rachel Thacker, having gained a lot of experience working in premium hotels. Rachel’s husband, Paul, is a highly-regarded, multi award-winning chef.
The company was formed with a view to create and deliver luxury sushi cases (rather like upmarket chocolate boxes), to be enjoyed at home, perhaps with some sparkling wine, champagne or sake. Paul has worked with acclaimed sushi chef Jaturavit Saysena for many years.
Jaturavit has gained numerous awards. The sushi boxes are delivered to a 15-mile radius of Nottingham city (beyond can easily be arranged). Plus, there are a good number of

Stones With Meaning
The stones and crystals we all admire and wear to this day will have many spiritual meanings and healing properties behind them that may not be known.
The uses of stones have changed throughout history and religions.
Amethyst is considered to be the most popular variety of Quartz crystals and the most powerful and protective stone, often used in jewellery for its healing purposes.
In Britain, the colour purple was often associated with power, wealth and royalty. In fact, the British adorned the crowns of the Royal Family member with radiant Amethyst jewellery. It is believed that Amethyst can cleanse the body’s organs and circulatory system, being labelled as a blood cleanser whilst lowering high blood pressure and eliminating blockages.
Rose Quartz is known for its great healing properties and is one of the most valuable and prized stones amongst jewellery owners. The crystal meaning in legends suggests that Aphrodite’s blood-stained on White Quartz when she cut herself on a thorny bush trying to save her loved one Adonis from Are’s War.
Rose Quartz is said to create a sense of calmness for the inner peace and self-healing, allowing you to love yourself and express your desire without self-doubt. This should be your go-to crystal if you struggle with low self-esteem or self-worth.
Turquoise has been popular for thousands of years dating back to Egyptian times and was believed to boost and bring good energy to the bearer. This stone has many healing attributes, mostly helping remove negative energy and bringing a positive sense of feeling.
Turquoise is said to smooth communication between the spiritual and physical realms, increasing inactive psychic abilities and boosting intuition as well as brings wisdom and insights. It is a very efficient healer promoting inner peace and positive energy, establishing a mood that helps control anxiety and prevent people from having panic attacks.

Looking Forward To Christmas This Year?
So many people get swept along with the idealised image of Christmas and feel the pressure to conform; to spend money, decorate their homes, party through the holidays, just like they see in glossy magazines and on TV advertisements.
But this puts an unfair, unrealistic view of Christmas onto those who are alone, have to work or who don’t want or who aren’t in a position to adhere to that image.
For those in professions like hospitality, health care and farming, Christmas is just another day, and often a busy one. Shifts need to be covered, livestock need attending to, and for many others, family might be unavailable and it may be that Christmas is a time to be spent alone.
Let’s look at ways to have a positive Christmas this year;
Even if you’re not feeling especially festive, why not put up a pre-decorated tiny tree, a festive wreath on your front door or display your cards on the dresser? It will help you stop feeling so ‘humbug’ about it all.
Send cards. Lots of people are moving away from sending greetings cards but for many people on their own, especially older people, having something friendly arrive through their letter box makes a pleasant change from bills, spam mail and charity bags.
Plan ahead. When you’re doing your Christmas shopping, why not add a few treats for yourself? Buy some of your favourite food, sort out your holiday viewing, pre-arrange a call to friends or family members.
LOOKING FORWARD TO... Issue 116 2022 Twitter: @icenimagazine Instagram: icenimagazine Facebook: www.facebook.com/icenimagazine PAGE 34 www.icenimagazine.co.uk
Accept invitations. Say ‘yes’ to the neighbour who invites you round for an early ‘glass of sherry’ and a mince pie. Or instead invite them round to yours for half-an-hour.
Manage your alcohol intake. There’s no merit in drowning your sorrows and spending the ensuing few days feeling miserable and hung-over. Determine in advance to include some positive, more proactive activities over the holidays, like going for a walk or run.
If you’re divorced and missing your children, relax and be flexible about arrangements. Many people agree to an alternative Christmas Day lunch, where the parents entertain their children on separate days. Children often don’t mind having two Christmas meals, with all the trimmings!
Check out in advance free activities. Money could well be tight this year, so find out times of carol services, access to parks, concerts and gallery openings. Some events may need to be booked in advance. Not everything has to be paid for and it can even be fun to visit a shopping mall and enjoy the lights and decorations over a relaxed coffee as you watch the rushing crowds push by.
If you’re entertaining at some point why not plan ahead? Prepare some tasty comfort food, like casseroles, stews, pies and soups, things that can be prepared and frozen in advance. It’s often a relief for guests when they’re offered
something wholesome and warming to eat, rather than rich over-indulgent Christmas fare, especially if you combine that with a pleasant walk first.
Share the catering if you’re spending time with others. If everyone contributes a bottle or a dish it spreads both the cost and the pressure around. A safari supper can be fun, where people travel from house to house, enjoying a course at each other’s homes.
If you’re entertaining at home, get other people involved. Share the load. Ask children to set the table, peel a few potatoes and praise them for their contributions. Flatter the ‘the mother-in-law’ into bringing her signature dish. There’s usually a trifle or some such that she’s super-proud of. Then you’re sharing a meal that everyone feels they’ve added value to.
Don’t get caught up in a last-minute spending frenzy; ‘just one more’, ‘can’t live without’, ‘just in case’ panic buying can result in spending money on things that aren’t wanted or needed. That applies to sales too! Something’s only a bargain if you actually want it!
And, if you’re on your own, remember that Christmas is just one day. It means you don’t have to eat too much rich food, watch Granny fall asleep or listen to Uncle Pete’s dreadful jokes. You can please yourself, something that many others would be envious of!

It’s Chrrrriiissstmmaaaaassss!
OK, with my best Noddy Holder impression done for another year we shall begin our festive column!
In the past, we’ve talked about our Christmas traditions and how they’ve evolved from both childhoods to form one set of new traditions for our own little family and we’ve reflected back on a very different build up to Christmas 2020 when in lockdown.
This year, I’m struggling. Struggling to realise how close Christmas is, and to embrace the festive spirit.
Now, if Becca had her way, she would jump straight from the end of Summer to Christmas. I on the other hand enjoy Halloween, fireworks and the beginnings of cosy evenings.
I have enjoyed these this year too, although cosy evenings are a lot nicer when you can afford to put the heating on!
When do you start feeling Christmassy?
I’m not sure there’s any definitive moment for me usually, but rather that I just naturally get into the spirit.
However, this year, every time I hear a Christmas song on the radio I think how early it is. Even panicking about the last few presents to buy seems a way off from bothering me.
I worked at a Christmas Fair a few weeks back and I did very briefly feel like the festive season had begun. But the feeling soon passed.
SEE WHAT MUMMY SAYS Issue 116 2022 Twitter: @icenimagazine Instagram: icenimagazine Facebook: www.facebook.com/icenimagazine PAGE 38 www.icenimagazine.co.uk
We usually watch a lot of Christmas movies in our house, and this year we’ve gone big early! Home Alone, Miracle on 34th Street and Four Christmas’s have already been enjoyed and they are three that are watched every year without fail. But still, I can’t get into it!
There’s been Christmas craft, lots of people in Christmas themed jumpers at work, get togethers being organised, shops being decorated, cards beginning to arrive. The list goes on. Unfortunately, all with the same level of current enthusiasm from myself: Little to none.
We have so many things to look forward to in the coming weeks, time with friends and family, winter wonderland and a trip on the Mid Norfolk Railways Polar Express to mention just a few.
I wonder whether part of this lack of enthusiasm comes from the decorations not being up. Usually, we decorate mid to late November which is early for some but otherwise (like this year!) if things come up at the weekends it’s delayed until into December!
Have you ever felt stuck in a pre-Christmas rut?
What tips have you got to help an unintentional Scrooge?
Is there a Norfolk event you’d recommend? Let us know!
For now, let me just assure you that I’m sure I will step out of my festive funk soon and we all wish you a very Merry Christmas and a happy and healthy New Year!
Thank you for reading!

Reducing Your Stress Levels On Christmas Day
If you’re anything like me, you will strive for the perfect Christmas dinner, scene around the Christmas tree and even entertainment.
As I’ve got older, I’ve come to the realisation that letting things take care of themselves a little bit will help to reduce my stress levels on Christmas Day and overall, we will all enjoy ourselves more.
Here are 4 ways in which you can help yourself this Christmas.
Advance Preparation
I used to have amazing intentions about waking up before the kids, having a shower, getting
dressed and made up then heading straight to the kitchen to prepare the veggies ready for the mammoth meal later in the day. Actually, nine times out of ten, I failed miserably at this because I value sleep too much.
Either that or my children would have awoken much earlier! I have since realised that you can prep the roast potatoes weeks in advance. I tend to parboil any potatoes that are coming to the end of their lives in the weeks leading up to Christmas and then freeze.
First, put them on a baking tray and about 12 hours later, transfer them into a freezer bag or other suitable container. You can then cook these straight from frozen and they’re just as deliciously crispy. The night before Christmas,
REDUCING YOUR STRESS... Issue 116 2022 Twitter: @icenimagazine Instagram: icenimagazine Facebook: www.facebook.com/icenimagazine PAGE 40 www.icenimagazine.co.uk
peel your carrots and put them into a pan of water, too. You may even wish to shred your sprouts (my recipe is to die for, and no one rejects these sprouts!) ready to add to the magic ingredients the following day. You could prepare the starters and desserts (or elements of them), too.
Enlist Help
Hands up if you’re usually a bit of a martyr on Christmas Day! Well, I confess that I used to be. People invading my domain (i.e., the kitchen) would drive me mad and my stress levels would rise because of it.
However, I quickly realised that although I wanted things my way, I would save way more time and energy if I just accepted some help and let people cross the kitchen threshold. If you give decent instructions, stress levels can remain fairly low, if you allow them to.
Be Notepad/Phone Ready
I love snapping my children’s amazed faces on Christmas morning, but this is not the only reason to have your phone ready. If you prefer, you could just grab a notepad and pen (but I’m notoriously bad for losing these things!).
Rather than seeing your stress levels rise visibly when you forget which gift was given by Great Auntie Myra or teachers at school, for example, make a note of each present as it is being unwrapped. Then you’ll know that your kids can write personalised thank you notes rather than generic.
Perfection isn’t Everything
Finally, coming to the realisation that perfection exists mainly in festive films when it comes to Christmas Day wonders will help lower your stress levels considerably.
Things will naturally go wrong on any given day of the year. However, being together with loved ones and remembering all the amazing things we have to be grateful for in life can really help to ramp Christmas up a notch or two.
If all else fails, no one will object to pizza and a heated game of Monopoly!

Preventing Christmas Weight Gain
It is not uncommon for people to overindulge over the Christmas period and in the new year finding themselves several pounds heavier and way more sluggish.
It is possible to enjoy the festivities but avoid the weight gain and associated side effects. Here are some suggestions for you.
Keep Exercising
It is all too easy to use the Christmas period as a
reason for not heading to the gym or partaking in exercise. Of course, you may find that your favourite fitness class has been cancelled, but that shouldn’t stop you. Remember lockdown?
Online classes and YouTube tutorials were lifesavers for so many people.
If you are a runner, you may find that your local parkrun is offering a Christmas Day 5k.
Alternatively, just heading out for a brisk walk will raise your heart rate and have a positive impact on your mental wellbeing, too.
PREVENTING CHRISTMAS... Issue 116 2022 Twitter: @icenimagazine Instagram: icenimagazine Facebook: www.facebook.com/icenimagazine PAGE 42 www.icenimagazine.co.uk
Reduce Snacks
With Christmas meals being far more calorific than your usual feasts, adding snacks into the mix could mean that you are double (or more) the recommended calories and fat intake for someone of your gender and age.
No one is saying to do without snacks altogether but reducing the number you enjoy will have a positive impact.
Watch Portion Sizes
There is so much indulgent food on offer at home, at loved ones’ houses and when eating out in restaurants or pubs. However, that does not mean that you need to gorge yourself. When you are piling your own plate with food, it is much easier to make a sensible decision and have three roast potatoes rather than five or one scoop of cauliflower cheese instead of two, for example. Having what you fancy but just smaller amounts can make an enormous difference to any weight gain you are trying to avoid.
Think Drink
Creamy liqueurs, calorific cocktails and heavy beers might all have a place in your usual
Christmas routine, but none of them will be doing you any favours. Like we said before, no one is telling you a definitive no.
However, choosing an alternative drink, such as a gin or vodka with slimline tonic can prove wise. Alternatively, opt for your regular tipple but have a glass of water in between alcoholic beverages instead. In other words, pace yourself.
Be Active
Ok, so we have already mentioned exercise, but being active doesn’t have to mean building up a sweat and feeling like you are preparing for a marathon.
There is an overwhelming temptation over the festive period to indulge, not only in food but also in film and TV.
However, sitting on the sofa, only moving to reach for the tin of Quality Street will not really help. Of course, watch whatever you would like to, but move around as well.
If your child was given a bike for Christmas, head out with them and walk alongside as they practise. Likewise, a new football kit is a common present, so saunter to the park with them to test it out.

Announce December 2022
‘Together At Christmas’ Tour Dates
Coming to NORWICH - Waterfront on Sunday 18th December 2022!
SLADE - Without doubt one of the most exciting bands to come out of Great Britain in the past 50 years. With their unique blend of perfect pop rock‘n’roll, outrageous flamboyance and pure fun, and no less than 23 Top-20 singles of which 6 were No-1 smash hits... plus 6 smash albums, Slade have become a firm favourite in the hearts of pop fans all over the world.
SLADE’S chart career has spanned 6 decades and their enduring songs “Far Far Away”, “Cum On Feel The Noize” and “Coz I Luv You” are still featured today in TV commercials for some of the World’s biggest companies.
SLADE first hit the road in 1966, touring throughout Great Britain and Europe and
becoming a regular concert attraction. Joining forces with the former Animals bass guitarist and Jimi Hendrix Experience manager, Chas Chandler, Slade achieved their first chart hit in May 1971 with the Bobby Marchan song “Get Down and Get With It” then, released in October of the same year “Coz I Luv You” was the bands first No-1 and a huge hit across Europe.
Throughout the seventies, Slade became one of Europe’s biggest bands, touring and recording continually and making regular trips to America, Japan and other parts of the world. Slade’s catalogue of hits are synonymous with the era:“Take Me Bak 'Ome”, “Mama We’er All Crazee Now”, “Cum On Feel The Noize”, “Gudbye T’ Jane”, along with the many others provided a

soundtrack to the Glam Generation and are still today, heavily featured on any retrospective of the time.
At the beginning of the eighties, Slade were invited to appear at the Reading Rock Festival, a massive annual event which attracted over 100,000 people. They literally stole the show, giving some of the world’s biggest rock bands a serious run for their money whilst kindling new interest from a whole new audience. As a result, the band signed a new record deal and unleashed the anthem “We’ll Bring The House Down”, which reached the Top-10 in the UK in January 1981. Slade were back!
Not content to rest on their Glam laurels, Slade began forging a new path through the hugely influential British heavy rock scene. After a successful appearance at Castle Donnington in 1981, before a crowd of over 60,000 people, consolidated the bands position and paved the way for the single “Lock Up Your Daughters”, and the album “Til Deaf Do Us Part”.
While Slade were busy in the UK releasing the massive hit “My Oh My” to huge acclaim, LA metal band Quiet Riot were spreading the word Stateside with their version of “Cum On Feel The Noize”, which proved so successful that they followed it up with “Mama Weer All Crazee Now”. Throughout the start of the eighties Slade toured and recorded due to them once again being a major force in British pop‘n’rock.
The early nineties saw the bands “Radio Wall Of Sound” hit the UK Top-30 and thereby give Slade a solid 30 year chart run!
In 1991, due to the continual demand from around the world, founder Slade member Dave Hill returned to touring by playing a few select dates in Europe prior to embarking on what turned out to be a very successful two-month tour of Australia.
SLADE have continued to tour the world. They are firm favourites on the lucrative German festival scene and undertake an annual UK “Merry Christmas Everybody” tour in December. They have a huge following of fans and regularly play concert dates in Germany, Poland, Belgium, Holland, Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Finland, Czech Republic, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Ukraine, Bulgaria, Spain & France. Having just returned from a festival in Gibraltar, next stop is Greenland and Faroe Islands.
Now in 2022, Led by founder member Dave Hill on Lead Guitar with John Berry who joined in 2003 on Lead Vocals, Bass, Acoustic Guitar and Violin. John has also played Bass with Mud, The Sweet, Screaming Lord Sutch, The Tremeloes, Bay City Rollers & The Rubettes. Joining John on Lead Vocals and Keys is Russell Keefe, having played in many original bands in his early years, he has also recorded albums for Polygram & United Artists, Russell has toured with The Pretty Things and Les McKeown’s Bay City Rollers. Alex Bines now joins on Drums, Alex has toured with Wilko Johnson, The Rubettes and is also a Drum teacher.
Slade today is still one of the most exciting bands on the road, and their stage performance is a dynamic, powerful and exhilarating rollercoaster ride of pure unadulterated rock‘n’roll.

Giving Back
This may seem a bizarre concept in these difficult economic times, but it doesn’t necessarily mean handing over your over hard-earned cash.
It could be giving up your time for a community project, or just popping in to check on a neighbour. It’s times like these when we genuinely need to look after our communities, and they in turn will look after us. Helping others can benefit ourselves, our confidence improves (who knew we had something to offer others), a volunteer or friend is always welcome. It isn’t always just about the £££s though they always come in useful.
As I’ve often said in these articles before, our actions and purchasing power can be very effective ways of supporting others and the environment.
This point was brought home to my husband recently. If I head into a charity shop on our forays out, I get the rolling eyes, deep sigh and ‘why don’t they ever have decent clothes for us chaps?’ comment.
On a recent trip away, I wanted to try out the charity offerings on an ‘up-market’ high street so set off and dragged him in. Whilst I floated around the ladies rails he headed off to find the books, but suddenly stopped by a rail of mens clothing.
There were shirts and trousers by one of his favourite brands and in his size too. As he put it no one had died recently as they didn’t smell of moth balls and were brand new.
The shop manager told us that they had over 20 parcels of clothing in from this one manufacturer alone in the past few days and
GIVING BACK Issue 116 2022 Twitter: @icenimagazine Instagram: icenimagazine Facebook: www.facebook.com/icenimagazine PAGE 46 www.icenimagazine.co.uk
they were selling like hot cakes. Too true said my husband, leaving with a pair of trousers and two shirts and paying a fraction of the new full retail price.
Many charity shops now receive end of lines and overstocks from brands, it is a way of the companies doing their bit for others.
This has resulted in my husband having a different mindset to such matters. He hates waste and as a businessman does not like giving things away for nowt (note Yorkshire Grandmother and Scottish Grandfather).
However, now instead of spending a lot of time selling items he does not want on eBay or Facebook marketplace, he takes them to charity shops instead.
His reasoning is threefold:
1. He is giving something back
2. He is saving a precious commodity, his own time
3. He might pick up another bargain whilst in the shop
As we near the festive season, my husband always asks for lists from myself and our children as to what we might like at Christmas.
He calls these lists from aspirational to you have got to be kidding!
But I have no doubt he will be visiting all the charity shops this Christmas, often with a bag of something he has decluttered from home.
It is upon his return from these shops with another bargain shirt, that I will know that he has purchased my Christmas present. And do you know what? I couldn’t be happier.
Have a great Christmas and here is to a better year for all in 2023.

A Very Silly Christmas Show Returns To Wells Maltings
Last Christmas, Wells Maltings played host to a brother and sister, an evil stepmother, a talking tree - yes, you read that right - and a house made of sweets.
It was all going so well (apart from the whole getting lost in the forest thing), until COVID struck the cast after only the third show.
But fear not, for this year, HANSEL AND GRETEL is back with a bang!
With the same two-person cast, produced by fEAST Theatre and Wells Maltings, this
promises to be the funniest Christmas show you’ll see, at the north Norfolk landmark arts venue that refused to be beaten by the pandemic.
Join a boy called Hansel and his slightly bossy but much smarter sister Gretel as they journey through the forest on a daredevil adventure that’s a sweet treat for children and their grown-ups. You’ll laugh. You’ll cry. You’ll never look at Gummy Bears the same way again.
Teaming up once again with resident professional theatre company fEAST Theatre, this is the seventh collaboration between fEAST and Wells Maltings since 2018, and
CHRISTMAS SHOW Issue 116 2022 Twitter: @icenimagazine Instagram: icenimagazine Facebook: www.facebook.com/icenimagazine PAGE 52 www.icenimagazine.co.uk
reflects a desire not to let adversity get you down.
Featuring fun songs and puppetry with a distinctive Norfolk twist on the classic tale, Nick Lane’s funny, festive show is a treat for all the family.
It’s directed by fEAST’s artistic director Dawn Finnerty, who also brought you ‘TWAS THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS in 2019 and SIGNAL FIRES in 2020 and 2021, the first live theatre at Wells Maltings after the pandemic.
Wells Maltings opened in 2018, and has secured a position as a much loved venue for arts, theatre, art exhibitions, music and screen events, plus a whole range of activities aimed at the local north Norfolk community, such as workshops for young people, talks, quizzes and a regular slightly raucous bingo night.
The centre receives no public funding, and operates a range of commercial activities to support the provision of arts and entertainment for everyone.
Wells Maltings director Simon Daykin says, “The show that even COVID couldn’t beat is back - and we are all excited and delighted.
A bit of silliness and adventure as part of your Christmas feast - who could ask for more? And all made and presented on your doorstep.”
HANSEL AND GRETEL opens on Friday 16th December 2022, and runs till Tuesday 28th December at Wells Maltings in the heart of Wells-next-the-Sea.
Tickets are £12.50 for adults and £10 for children, with generous family discounts available.
Tickets from the Maltings box office 01328 710885 10am -4pm daily; or online at wellsmaltings.org.uk

Horoscopes For December
Aries 21 March - 20 April
You’ll be ready for fresh adventures and new experiences, which could include a short break or vacation. This month sparkles with promise. Yet you may feel uncertain at the time of the Full Moon on the 7th, so avoid making any important decisions. Jupiter re-enters your sign on the 20th just in time for the holiday week, so your energy and confidence will return. Your goals for 2023 will be on your mind too, and the New Moon on the 23rd can help you set your intentions. Mind, Mercury’s retro phase from the 29th might be a cause of delays, so go easy!
Taurus 21 April - 21 May
Eager for dynamic change? This month, you’ll be happy to tackle issues that have been a thorn in your side. And while you may feel temporarily out of sorts around the Full Moon in week one, your energy and enthusiasm will soon return. You’ll manage to sort out muddles, especially around business and finance. Your mind may be on new opportunities, as key planets including Venus and the Sun, ease into Capricorn. And with a New Moon on the 23rd this is a great time to launch projects, get started on a challenge or to travel to sunnier climes to unwind, Taurus.
Gemini 22 May - 21 June
You’ll find it easier to flow with your ideas, as ethereal Neptune turns direct on the 3rd. Harness your imagination, so that it works for you rather than against you. You’ll also get a lot of support from others, and your social life and love life will boost your spirits no end. Don’t let someone’s criticisms of you get you down on the Full Moon in week one. Let it wash over you and move on. Have urgent matters to sort out? The Sun’s move into Capricorn in week three, can help you be very efficient. Mercury will rewind on December 29th, so don’t take anything for granted.
Cancer 22 June - 23 July
This December, it’s time to get organised, and to make your day-to-day routines work better for you. If there are activities that get in the way of accomplishing your goals, be strong and jettison them. The Full Moon on December 7th can highlight one habit that is best got rid of. Once you do, your productivity will soar. And with jubilant Jupiter entering a highflying zone from the 20th, your career and business may soon be back on track. Better times lie ahead! Ready to reinvent your love life? The New Moon on December 23rd is perfect for rekindling the passion.

Leo 24 July - 23 August
Opportunities for new adventures, sizzling romance, for travel and showcasing your talents, open up for you. You may be busy, but the cosmos encourages you to get out and enjoy yourself when possible. If you have the chance of a romantic getaway, then do take it. Mind, the Full Moon on the 7th could reveal the truth about someone. You’ll need to decide how to respond to any revelations. Plus, as buoyant Jupiter heads back into Aries, it’s time to think big and aim for those golden opportunities. You’ll be very active at work, but try to make health a priority too, Leo.
Virgo 24 August - 23 September
You’ll be busy with family affairs, festive events and entertaining, as December gets underway. Your place could be a hive of activity, with everyone chipping in to make this month extra special. As the emphasis shifts to your pleasure zone, this is your chance to indulge. There are opportunities to mingle and connect with friends, groups and clubs, or to get involved in a new romance. There may be news about finances, as generous Jupiter moves back into Aries. If you need funds for something or are expecting a bonus, it could show up from the 20th, Virgo.
Libra 24 September - 23 October
It’s time to get in touch with old friends and new, and to connect with kindred spirits either by attending events or using social media. As well as hanging out with your tribe, you’ll be keen to market your business, start a blog or website or get moving with an online enterprise. Home and family affairs will be important too, and you’ll be delighted to lend a hand with any festive preparations. A relationship could go from strength to strength, as Jupiter returns to Aries from week three. Eager to start a home-based project? The New Moon on the 23rd is the perfect time.
Scorpio 24 October - 22 November
Money will flow into your life, but could flow out just as easily this month. The emphasis on your financial zone encourages you to budget for this festive season so you don’t get caught out. There are opportunities to enhance your income, especially with a clever side hustle. Consider putting some money aside, as there may be an unexpected expense around the 7th. And you’ll be busy with your social scene and popular too. Plus, a fabulous New Moon in Capricorn on the 23rd, is excellent for initiating a project or starting anything that can help you get ahead in life.
Sagittarius 23 November - 21 December
As December gets underway, you’ll be in your element and ready to make the most of the weeks ahead. The Sun in your sign will enhance vitality and confidence, making it easier to project your personality out into the world and impress the right people. And you’ll be in an enterprising mood and eager to make the most of opportunities. And as Jupiter re-enters Aries from the 20th, a sizzling holiday week awaits you, along with travel and romance. Mercury rewinds from the 29th, so money matters may need careful handling. It’s wise to keep receipts and paperwork.
Capricorn 22 December - 20 January
You’ll be keen to tie up loose ends as December gets underway. The weeks until the 21st are excellent for finding closure on lingering issues and taking the opportunity to relax and recharge. The Full Moon on the 7th can make you aware of how little chance you’ve had to enjoy a break, so make this a top priority. As the focus shifts to your sign with the Sun moving in on the 21st you’ll soon be back on form. This is your time to focus on activities that you’re enthusiastic about. Make use of the New Moon in Capricorn on the 23rd to set your intentions for 2023.
Aquarius 21 January - 19 February
It’s party time, as December reveals a sparkling focus on your social zone. You’ll have opportunities to spend time with old friends and make new connections. And attending any events could bring opportunities that open doors for you. The exception is the 7th, when the Full Moon can leave you feeling out of sorts. Selfcare and pampering are the order of the day. Jubilant Jupiter back in Aries from the 20th, hints at an offer that’s too good to miss. From the 21st take time out to recharge, Aquarius. Make refilling your creative well a top priority.
Pisces 20 February - 20 March
You’ll be in top spot, with a focus on a highflying zone encouraging you to promote your skills and talents. While everyone else is out enjoying themselves, you’ll be busy taking advantage of opportunities to further your career and business success. Socializing will be a big part of this month too. Plus, dreamy Neptune your guide planet turns direct, helping you to channel your imagination so that you’ll more easily accomplish your goals. Mind, with Mercury rewinding from the 29th, it pays to be careful when buying or signing. Keep receipts and paperwork, Pisces.
