ICMS - PROSPECTUS 2020
FOUNDER’S FOREWORD LOUIS CHUO
FOUNDER OF ICMS As ICMS steps into its 10th Anniversary since its founding, we continue to be defined by the same, simple yet powerful, philosophy when we first started: to bring together ambitious, motivated and aspirational youths who are keen on professional development. I am proud to say that our descendants have successfully kept the show going on for years, delivering returns that exceed the expectations of our stakeholders. Our motivation for continuous improvement takes heed from the generous support, trust and faith we have received from the long-term partnerships we forged the past decade. 2019 has been another successful year with the 9th Council as we constantly build upon the three founding pillars of ICMS – building networks, empowering leaders and realising ideas. Our global presence continues to grow and expand across international borders in our six bases, and we can proudly say that we are the only Malaysian student-led organisation that has the ability to organise events and create platforms with such a global scale. By venturing over new horizons and constant manifestations of our vision and missions, we strive to build upon our position as the leading international Malaysian-based student organisation. Our commitment to excellence and performance has been showcased in our solid brand value and sterling brand record. Our ongoing relationships with our corporate partners have grown strength to strength and this is reflected in their generous financial and strategic support: Strategic Partner: ICAEW Partner: Maybank, EY, Sunway Group, Jeffrey Cheah Foundation Platinum Sponsor: Axiata Bronze Sponsor: PwC As part of staying relevant to the goals of our stakeholders and partners, we remain committed to maintaining, refining and reaffirming our values while also re-inventing strategies to drive greater growth within the Council. By diversifying the Associate and MNC experience, expanding our network, and truly utilising the source of talents we have, the 10th Council will continue to elevate platforms for the benefit of our fellow Malaysians. I am confident that the 10th Council will remain dedicated to the partnerships and projects we have cultivated over years of success. I hope that this prospectus sheds light on what we do and what we can do with you, with ICMS as well as interests you in forging a network with ICMS – an organisation where the people are our greatest asset. My message for you today are words of faith and gratitude. It is your presence that helped us create the success that contributed to one of the largest, international Malaysian student-based organisations and to continue to serve our fellow Malaysians home and away. With your support, we will continue to provide professional and meaningful networking opportunities to the global Malaysian student community. We, at ICMS want to rise to greater heights and we appeal to you to continue pledging that very support that got us to where we are today. As we enter a new chapter in the history of ICMS, we invite you to join us in continuing to make a meaningful impact on Malaysian youths worldwide.

ICMS - PROSPECTUS 2020
CHIEF EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR’S ADDRESS SOH JING WEN CED OF 10TH COUNCIL Perhaps the greatest contribution one can offer to this world is making a real and positive impact. To be where I am today was not a one-man show. I owe my learning and growth tremendously to the people who have supported me thus far. I am grateful for their contribution, many of which are nameless, faceless, and selfless. Their spirit of unconditional giving is my many motivations to strive to be the best version of myself. The warmth of their kindness sheds light on the lives of others, like shining stars. The past Councils and the Alumni Network Committee are fitting examples of shining stars that have worked tirelessly, through sleepless nights and busy days, to bring the Council to its present state. I sincerely thank all of you for the hard work and efforts, providing the 10th Council with substantial support and advice. To our Partners and Sponsors, who have been our unwavering pillars of support that provides the capacity to bring benefit to our fellow Malaysian youths, thank you for believing and trusting ICMS. There is so much that has been done, and even more that has yet to be done, and the 10th Council shall embark on a journey to fulfil the undone. This is a start to the end of a decade. Ten years is not a long time, but it is significant enough to have left an impact on the Malaysian youths. It has been a remarkable journey, and ICMS will continue to blossom in the coming decade. The 10th Council pledges to bring ICMS to greater heights, through “Building Networks, Empowering Leaders and Realising Ideas”. We aspire to execute a diversified range of initiatives to match the widening interests of the student population, increase outreach and societal penetration by expanding our presence into previously untapped student populations, and amplifying the value of associateship through the tailored initiatives under ICMS Academy. I am a firm believer that an open mind is the most receptive to learning and constant improvement. Along with a team of dedicated Directors and capable Associates, we will work hand-in-hand to propel the Council forward and upward. Leveraging our strengths and through learning from each other, we aim to contribute back to society as a team, and collectively become shining stars to the people around us. More than just stars, we should be candles, whose light signifies continuity and ignites the spark in others. May the baton of impact be passed on by ICMS to the many we come in contact with, creating a legacy of lasting and sustainable impact. To 2020, a year of impact, of touching hearts and transforming lives.

Our History 2011
Empowering Beginnings
The 28th of November 2010 saw the seeds of the International Council of Malaysian Scholars and Associates (ICMS) planted at St Hilda’s College, Oxford. The seeds were planted, as a group of zealous Malaysian students set out to create a global network of like-minded and aspirational Malaysian students. The founding Council organised ICMS’s first flagship event – the Malaysian Public Policy Competition (MPPC) 2011 – which allowed participants to understand policy conception and implementation. This event has since been a part of our culture to this day.
2013
Designing the ICMS Presence
Bearing the mission to bring together a strong network of dynamic Malaysian students, the 3rd Council channelled their energies into creating a distinguishable and authentic presence for ICMS. These rebranding efforts presented ICMS as the network for students to excel in the fields of career, intellectual and leadership development. In 2013, we saw our second flagship event, Industry Insights (I2) come to life. Participants had an experiential opportunity to dive into leading industries while contributing their ideas.
2015
Strength in Joined Forces
The 5th Council increased outreach by connecting with more driven Malaysians to fortify the presence of ICMS in all six countries. Additionally, ICMS collaborated with 11 other Malaysian student councils to form the Malaysian Students’ Global Alliance (MSGA). This partnership launched the Global Policy Symposium (GPS), an event bringing together Malaysian students of various backgrounds in the name of intellectual discourse.
2017
Suitainable Leadership
Reaping success after success, ICMS exceeded expectations proliferating to its widespread and talented student body in over six countries. With the key goals of Refinement, Engagement and Diversity in mind, the 7th Council worked tirelessly to bring the brand name of ICMS to new places and to upkeep the successful efforts of their predecessors.
2019
Initiating Action
The 9th Council took the baton to where the influence of the organisation had yet to reach while deepening its influence where it had taken root, continuing projects initiated by the 8th Council. Through thorough discussion and planning, the Council restructured the framework and organisation of ICMS Academy, which is left to be executed by their successors.
Growing Trust
2012
With its favourable reception and successful groundwork, the fore-bearers of ICMS successfully passed on the torch to the 2nd Council, who undertook the rolling ambition of making ICMS into a recognised student organisation. ICMS was established as a registered NGO, solidifying its presence and trust with our corporate Partners and Sponsors. The Prime Minister recognised the impact of MPPC 2012 and the winners’ policies were taken into serious consideration for national implementation.
Traversing Borders
2014
ICMS continued to grow at an astounding pace as we laid our foundation in five other countries – Hong Kong, Singapore, Canada, Malaysia and the United States of America. The 4th Council devised an internal restructuring masterplan to seamlessly facilitate the Council’s growth and utilise all human capital. The National Executive Committees and the International Executive Committee were formed then for increased effectiveness.
Unity in Diversity
2016
Entering the 5-year mark, the 6th Council prioritised diversification in our Associate base while striving to stabilise ICMS as a credible and excellent international organisation. Recruitment and core initiatives were consolidated and refined along with strong relationships with our Sponsors. The ICMS Academy was conceived as an umbrella initiative encompassing the Industry Sectors Hub (ISH) and catering to the technical and soft-skill development of our Associates.
Quantifiable Excellence
2018
ICMS aimed to tackle new challenges and to sustain its best professional practices and measures of effectiveness both internally and externally. The 8th Council directed detailed attention into quantifying and monitoring the progress and performance of Associates through a professional framework and ICMS Academy to continuously leverage on our strengths to deliver excellence, empower leaders, and complement diversity.
A Small Step Towards a Big Change
2020
Today, ICMS stands at a total of 926 Associates and Alumni spanning across six countries. The 10th Council aims to diversify the current initiatives and create profound and lasting impact. As we redesign our internal policies and strategies, we aspire to increase efficiency and enhance the value of an associateship. We will hold the ICMS missions close to heart as we strive to ‘Build Networks, Empower Leaders, and Realise Ideas’.

Future Direction MPPC has always taken pride in gathering driven Malaysians who wish to change the future of the nation through policymaking. Policymaking can be a tedious process, but MPPC has always streamlined it by creating a conducive space for participants to be unconventional problem solvers and use creative solutions to problems facing the nation. In MPPC 2020, we place emphasis on the diversity of the pool of candidates, as we believe youths from different walks of life can generate varying perspectives that would ultimately enrich the discourse. With a richer discussion, MPPC hopes to create substantial impact for the nation. Furthermore, we would want to ensure that ideas that are voiced out would have a certain degree of implementability. MPPC 2020 believes that ideas that are impactful should not fall on deaf ears but rather gain traction under the current political climate, so it can transform some aspects of the political system.
Testimonials “MPPC 2019 was really a whole new experience to me. MPPC was a mind-expanding experience to me as a person, as an informed Malaysian and as a passionate youth. One of the specialties of MPPC is its competition for a better well being and generation in Malaysia. It was so inspiring to see many passionate and talented Malaysian youth give their best just to serve a better Malaysia’s well being. It is a ripple effect that we should spread out among the youth and society to create an informed and harmonious community.” -Jared Chiew Jin Hong

INDUSTRY INSIGHTS I
Introduction Industry Insights (I²) is a two-day event that connects aspiring Malaysian students and industry leaders through engaging workshops, intensive debates and professional case studies. It also serves as a platform for students to showcase their critical thinking and presentation skills. I² aims to help participants understand how each industry functions and take ownership of their professional development.
Objectives Industry Insights provides participants with opportunities to network with leading firms in diverse industries in Malaysia as well as serve as a platform for them to enhance their professional skills such as communication and leadership. I² also seeks to equip participants with key skills, qualities and attributes highly desired by today’s globalised industries. In doing so, I² is able to offer participants valuable insights on career opportunities available in various industries, and educate participants on the new strategies required by firms and individuals alike to thrive in the modern world.
Past Achievements Industry Insights 2019, themed “Advocates of Society 5.0”, was held at Sunway Resort Hotel & Spa on July 27th and 28th, attracting 80 participants in total. I² 2019 saw collaborations with Sunway Group, Maybank Bhd, Ernst & Young (EY), Axiata, and the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW), as well as new event sponsor Samsung.

Future Direction Connecting the theme of the previous I² (Society 5.0), which focused on how innovation fuels economic growth, we are looking into the direction of “Open Innovation”. Within this theme, we have three tentative focus areas, including the Analytics Era (the IT sector), Sustainability and Workplace Culture. Open innovation is a collaborative process that aims to bring in external knowledge into the company through innovative activities, while unused ideas could be shared to a public library to be viewed and improved upon by other organisations and improved upon. This collaborative process will then trigger the flow of ideas. We believe that “Open Innovation” will allow us to leverage the challenges of fastpaced innovation as opportunities to equip participants with skills and knowledge that will enable them to stay ahead in this competitive society. Participants will be able to gain valuable insights on different industries through engaging sessions with our Partners and Sponsors. Moreover, through different workshops, participants are able to develop a variety of skills, including soft skills such as teamwork and presentation skills.
Testimonials
Chia Wei Shin (Participant) It was an awesome experience for me because I was given the opportunity to enhance my knowledge regarding the respective industries through case studies. Furthermore, the company engagement session was meaningful as participants had the chance to interact with the companies' representatives. Moreover, the sharing from the Alumni was fantastic and encouraging for undergraduates to join ICMS. Their experiences were eye-openers to how much more I can achieve as a student. Last but not least, I also managed to expand my network through forging friendships with other participants.
Ng Sin D (10th Council Associate) Industry Insights is one of the most professional and grand events that I have participated in, as it did not merely give exposure to different fields and industries but also realised the strength of networking between participants and the leaders of the respective industries. What amazed me the most throughout Industry Insights was the people. In particular, this successful event was not actually organised by any of the corporations involved, but by a group of talented university students who sacrificed their time for the betterment of others. Their proactiveness to be part of the organising team to lead this event is really inspiring and made me realise that like-minded people could lead to a transformative effect when it comes to working together and accomplishing similar goals. In short, although Industry Insights was merely a two-days event, somehow its impact was really huge and I really enjoyed these two days very much. The experience gained could not be described in sentences but could be felt by the heart.

EVENTS AROUND THE GLOBE
HONG KONG
In the light of empowering Malaysian youths, regardless of educational or racial backgrounds, ICMS hosted a series of roundtables and workshops with our Partners and Sponsors.
ICMS HK x MayCham Roundtable Held in late October of 2019, the Hong Kong Chapter’s Roundtable event was fittingly centered around the theme “The Future of Hong Kong”. Through interactive discussions by Associates and panellists alike, participants gained insight on Hong Kong’s current situation and the opportunities despite the city’s seemingly unstable future. The panelists, Mr. Andy Statham (CEO, Rapid 36), Mr. Thilagarajan (Director, CCAT) and Mr. Eddie Hui (CEO, IT emaos), shared their observations on the city’s entrepreneurship culture, political affairs, and opportunities in areas such as finance, IT and engineering. The reverse Q&A session featured questions posed by the panellists to help participants consider their own thoughts in these sectors.
Through the Roundtable event, participants gained a better understanding of the city they chose to complete their tertiary studies in. As summed up by one of the attendees, “Overall, it is a great event with a very good ambience and some fantastic, experienced speakers sharing insights on Hong Kong.”
PwC Roundtable: EnGendering Diversity
MALAYSIA
Participants were able to gain insights through interactive activities such as ‘Am I Bias?’, ‘Embracing my Identity’ and ‘Focus Group Session’. The panel session with YB Maria Chin Abdullah was a key highlight, focusing on working together in harnessing diverse talents’. Also, in collaboration with LeanIn youth, participants gained more insight on gender equality in the modern working environment, with YB Lim Yi Wei as the keynote speaker. Both ladies and gentlemen were given chances to try activities that emphasised engendering diversity. Event day ended with a heartwarming sharing session.

NA Chapter Event : ICMS Venture Challenge (IVEC) 2020
NORTH AMERICA
Back for its fourth installment, ICMS North America’s (NA) physical flagship event was held at Iowa State University (ISU) on February 8 and 9, 2020. A collaboration with the National Assembly of Malaysian Students in America (NAMSA), and the Ames Student Association for Malaysians (ASAM), the case study competition engaged Malaysian students through learning about the challenges faced to attain education equity in Malaysia and the potential of social ventures. Centered around the theme “Education Inequities in Malaysia,” the case study provided by ICMS’ knowledge advisor, Teach for Malaysia (TFM), shifted the business-centric nature of IVEC to a social entrepreneurial focus. Participants developed critical-thinking, leadership, and presentation skills as they formulated their solutions to the case. Judges at IVEC 2020 included Nurul Ezzaty Hasbullah, a 2020 Rhodes Scholar, and Jonathan Lee, the Co-founder of Izbasarworld with a sagacious background in Malaysian education. Their feedback as experts in the field highlighted the social aspect introduced to IVEC. The event was met with positive response, high engagements, as well as numerous creative solutions of which the North America Chapter had the pleasure of engaging with in judging participants’ work. IVEC’s success in gaining traction for its novel change was also enhanced for its great opportunity to network with Malaysian students and working professionals in North America.
