DEPUTY CHIEF EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR’S ADDRESS The International Council of Malaysian Scholars (ICMS) has long been a successful aid modality that allows aspiring Malaysian youths from all over the globe to engage actively and regularly in a beneficial personal development process. By fostering personalised connections with professionals as well as within the Council, it also promises a journey that won’t be easily forgotten. That is why, within the first few months of our inauguration, we feel that we are off to a good head start. So here’s a short recap of what went on over the past few months. By stepping up and into our new roles, we relieved our predecessors of all the hustle they have been through in the past year. The Annual General Meeting (AGM) in all 5 Chapters was held in February in order to officiate the procedures. It was a monumental day for all Associates as we thanked the 8th Council for their contributions and ushered in the leaders of tomorrow. The AGM kick-started all of our operations world-wide. The UK Chapter had their Graduan week which focused on providing university students with an opportunity to make valuable connections which will benefit them in the near future. The North American Chapter on the other hand started their Online Speaker Series, a virtual talk that invites prominent figures to provide insight to Malaysian youths regarding the industry. Meanwhile, the MY Chapter had their hands full in organizing the ICAEW Regional Business Challenge (RBC) 2019. These various events exhibit an eventful start to a new era. It reviews some of the fundamental leadership skills that a student should possess and outlines a set of practical skills involving planning, execution and collaboration. Most importantly, it induces the experience and growth of Malaysian youths, allowing them to shape their future with their own hands. Every single event and person involved have contributed to this learning journey. We are pleased to share with you a tremendous start to a new Council and look forward to the continued journey together. There is no doubt that right now, working so hard for the development of Malaysian youths was a labour of passion. ICMS 8TH AGM UK CHAPTER The 8th Annual General Meeting of ICMS United Kingdom (UK) Chapter was held at Imperial College London on the 24th of February (Sunday), from 12.45pm to 5.30pm. A total of 67 current ICMS Associates and past Alumni attended the AGM. The AGM started off with an opening address by the Outgoing Chief Executive Director, Darrell Lee, followed by a recap on the visions they set to achieve during their tenure throughout the past year. There were three main visions for the 8th Council Innovation, iversity and Empowering Associates. The fulfilment of these visions is evident through events that ICMS has held over the past year which includes Second Impressions 2018, Maybank Mayday 2018 and UK ViCaF 2019. Next, the 8th Council Directors conducted “year-in-review” presentations on their specific divisional goals and achievements. EO irectors Michelle Tham and ianca hor presented their achievements through five categories marketing, outreach, humanising ICMS, designs and publications and social media publicity. Successes included the large increase in sign-ups and engagement in UK ViCaF, the initiation of the London and Warwick roadshows and people-centric advertising to humanise ICMS. C S was up ne t and irectors Chris Chua and Shereen Tan emphasised the scope of the constitution, policy and governance framework. Throughout their term, they have successfully implemented several policies by working closely with other divisions. For instance, they created a non-disclosure policy to ensure sensitive info is circulated responsibly in collaboration with the Secretarial Division. As well as with the Corporate Relations ivision, they created the S policy and reporting procedure. Nur Sabrina, the I irector, presented the achievements of I and highlighted their visions of family, innovation and execution. These were achieved through organising more informal social gatherings, the creation and implementation of events such as Maybank Mayday and ‘Space’ (an internal initiative), and by increasing the frequency of dry runs to ensure that events ran smoothly.

Moving on, FD Director Janice Goh emphasised the division’s main goal to manage e penses more efficiently and provide a stable foundation for the incoming 9th Council. Achievements that were depicted included less reliance on sponsorship money, increased spending on initiatives, decreased project expenses and an increased reserve of 22.71% in the 4th Quarter. Jia Ming Ng, the Director of SD presented the three sub-divisions of SD which were publications, virtual workspace and web property. The main purpose of this Division was to compile and manage information transfer and storage within the council. The ivision accomplished their goal, through successfully delivering of our publications, increased transparency implemented through Slack (the virtual workspace for ICMS), improvements on the website and so on. During their presentation, IAP Directors (Sabrina Voon and Lee Zong Hao) emphasised their focus on four aspects during their tenure – recruitment, performance, JADP and the Summer eadership Camp. Throughout the year, there was more widespread recruitment outside of London as well as that, A was revamped by e tending the shadowing period and changing its structure to increase ownership and engagement. Furthermore, the continuation of the leadership camp provided an opportunity for all Associates and Alumni across the globe to foster relationships and build strong networks. Finally, for the CR ivision, ulian Chuo and Tasnim abar underscored their visions of transparency inclusion and diversity reinforcement.
The revamped content for A allowed Associates to contact external companies, therefore increasing the involvement of Junior Associates as well as allow for a more realistic experience of what the work of this ivision. Additionally, all contracts have been successfully renewed. This was then followed by a A session which proceeded professionally and with effective responses towards any concerns. Afterwards, the 8th Council NED of the UK Chapter Gary Tan played a heartfelt video, reminiscing the treasured times of their tenure and thanked his fellow Directors including the DNED of the UK Chapter Katherine Chong. This was then followed by the appointment of the new 9th Council Directors. Incoming CED Dai Wei Lee gave his incoming address, underlining his goal of enhancing the Associate experience, providing the MNC experience and to expand the network of ICMS. He also wishes to implement a oint uarterly Meeting and to create a master timeline to ensure that the Council progresses effectively and efficiently. Incoming NE and NE Ti Ern Sum and earlyn Tan emphasised the talent, resources and perseverance that ICMS processes, and projected their desire for the 9th Council to progress forward together. The Associates were then allocated to their respective Divisions to discuss divisional agendas for the 9th Council. The incoming Directors then proceeded with divisional presentations regarding these visions and goals which was then followed by a rigorous A session. To conclude, the AGM adjourned with a photo session and several Associates and Alumni ended the day with a celebratory dinner.

ICMS 8TH AGM HONG KONG CHAPTER The 8th Annual General Meeting (AGM) of ICMS Hong Kong Chapter was held on the 24th of February 2019 at De Hub, San Po Kong, Hong Kong. After registration concluded, an ice-breaking session was conducted to acquaint the Chapter. Following the ice-breaking session, a welcome speech was delivered by Darrell Lee Ket Wui, the 8th Council Executive Director (CED), where he expressed his gratitude to all ICMS members of past and present Councils for believing in the youth of Malaysia and stepping into the role of teachers to invest in our generation. The subsequent speech by Ang Sea Yen, a representative of ICMS Alumni, concurred with Darrell’s sentiments but emphasised the necessity for tight bonds within the Council with Directors and Associates cooperating and working together towards a common goal. The event then commenced with an opening speech by Chow Joo Yan, the 8th Council National Executive Director (NED), who thanked her colleagues for their services and the Associates for supporting ICMS. She hoped that the 9th Council will remain passionate in their duties, no matter how tough it gets during difficult times. The AGM then proceeded with divisional presentations by the outgoing Directors, who outlined the 8th Council’s most notable achievements. Subsequently, Lee Khang Sek, the 8th Council Deputy National Executive Director (DNED) delivered the handover address during which he listed out his expectations for the incoming Council to always uphold the ICMS spirit as well as to empower and help Malaysian students across the globe and to contribute in nation-building. As a representative of the 8th Council, he gave the succeeding Council his blessings before signing off. Following this, he facilitated the presentation of certificates of appreciation to the previous Council, as well as certificates of appointment to the incoming Directors and Associates of the 9th Council. To commemorate the beginning of the 9th Council, an inaugural speech was given by Lee Dai Wei, the CED of the 9th Council. Besides expressing his gratitude to the previous Councils for their efforts over the years in laying the foundation for which the future Councils will grow and learn on, he also asserted his desire to develop the ICMS Academy into a mainstay for Associates during their term in ICMS.

The 9th Council Directors and Associates then had a divisional goal setting discussion in order to get feedback on visions and goals for the forthcoming term, which were presented to the rest of the Chapter after a short refreshment break. Sean Tan, the Secretarial Division (SD) Director, suggested increasing engagement through task rotation between the three subdivisions of SD. Besides that, he also discussed how to improve publication materials by being more open to discussion on new segments or contents. Following that, the Internal Affairs and Performance (IAP) Director, Rachel Hoh highlighted her plans of enforcing effective communications, enriching Associates’ experience, and enhancing Associate welfare. She proposed the Senior Associate – Junior Associate mentorship programme to help Junior Associates familiarise themselves with ICMS as well as Hong Kong. Up next, the External Outreach and Publicity (EOP) Director, Chua Qian Yi discussed her plans to improve the recruitment of potential Associates and tackle possible disengagement issues. Then, the Project Development and Initiatives (PDI) Director, Kong Xian Cheng elaborated on his objective of meeting participant expectations, improving turnout rate and diversifying events held by not neglecting non-business fields.
Shum Jin Mey, the newly appointed Deputy Council Executive Director (DCED) and NED, then outlined the strategic direction of the 9th Council Hong Kong Chapter which is to continue the efforts of the 8th Council, whilst venturing into new areas and solving problems encountered in the past. She then discussed the Council timeline and her expectations for the 9th Council which is to work together as a team and Council. After a brief photo session facilitated by Chua Qian Yi and Lim Zhi Xin, the EOP Directors of the 8th and 9th Council, a toast was conducted to mark the start of the new Council.

ICMS 8TH AGM NORTH AMERICA CHAPTER
Following ICMS’s theme of always transcending geographical boundaries, this year, our North American (NA) Chapter held their Annual General Meeting (AGM) virtually through the Zoom platform. A total of 21 associates from all over the North American region attended the AGM. The AGM began with an opening remark by the outgoing 8th Council Deputy Chief Executive Director (DCED), Jean Anne Heng. She provided an overview of the agenda for the day and introduced the council to the incoming National Executive Director (NED), Komukill Loganathan and Deputy National Executive Director (DNED), Evan Ng. Next, there was an ice-breaking session, followed by a group photo
session which allowed the Associates that attended the meeting to familiarise themselves with the virtual platform and to spark the interaction between them. After the ice-breaking session, the 8th Council Chief Executive Director (CED), Darrell Lee presented his outgoing address by expressing his gratitude for the experience he gained throughout his term at ICMS, and also thanked Partners, Sponsors, and Alumni for their support. He was also grateful for all the ICMS Associates and each Chapter for their respective contribution over the past year and wished the best for the new Council. Following that, Ruixi Seet, the 8th Council National Executive Director (NED) of the NA Chapter provided her outgoing address. She highlighted

the achievements of the 8th Council NA Chapter which includes ViCaF: an online career event in collaboration with EPiC and InnovaSeeds, IVEC and an annual flagship event that harnessed the virtual operations and relationships with EPiC and Malaysian Student Association of Oklahoma University, and Online Speaker Series (OSS): the start of creating webinars using virtual platform to share insights by inspiring individuals. She also shared that although the 8th Council faced similar challenges as the 7th Council did, they still managed to operate efficiently while making full use of resources in the face of these hardships. Overall, she was proud of their achievements and officially handed the NA Chapter to the 9th Council. The next session consisted of the NA Chapter review by the 8th Council Directors. They shared their respective accomplishments, challenges and solutions over the term in hopes to inspire the new council in their journey. This is then followed by the incoming CED address by Lee Dai Wei. He shared his hopes and goals for the new council and highlighted that the Council should be positioned in direction of growth. Immediately after that, the 9th Council Associates who were present at the meeting were placed into their respective Divisions to discuss and set the respective goals and vision for each Division. Moving on, after the announcements, the incoming National Executive Director (NED) and Deputy National Executive Director (DNED) of the NA
Chapter, Komukill Loganathan and Evan Ng delivered their incoming NED and DNED Address. They focused on the four main pillars of overarching goals for this Council which were Engagement, Enrichment, Expansion, Transparency. The 9th Council started their term on a good note as they defined goals that include increasing the relevance of each Associate in the Chapter, producing internal events for professional skill development, focusing on expansion and improving upon outreach, initiatives, and relevance of chapter and providing periodic updates on Chapter events. It is then followed with the presentations by the newly elected Directors on their respective divisional goals and strategies for the new term. Finally, the meeting ended with the presentation by the Malaysian Public Policy Competition (MPPC) Deputy Project Director, Joanne Nie and Industry Insight (I2) Project Director, John Woo Jia Jun. Both presentations highlighted the achievements made by the past Councils and their plans for the upcoming event during their tenure. They hope to recruit more people and build relationships as these events open up the opportunity to build networks and be part of the nation-building process. To conclude, the AGM was a success and it was an event that strengthened the relationships among the newly appointed Associates across North America with the use of the virtual platform.

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING OF ICMS SINGAPORE CHAPTER The 8th Annual General Meeting (AGM) for ICMS Singapore (SG) Chapter was held at Yale-NUS College on 23rd February 2019. The AGM was attended by members of the 8th Council and 9th Council as well as Alumni from the 7th Council. The first agenda of the AGM was a review delivered by the Directors of the 8th Council. In an opening address by the outgoing National Executive Director (NED) and Corporate Relations (CR) Director Wong Zi Shuen, he commented on the event “Speak Up, 2018!” which was a huge success and had active participation from participants. As well as that, Darren Tay (former world champion of Toastmasters Championship) attended the event. According to Zi Shuen, 12 Junior Associates were successfully recruited by the 8th Council in 2018. He then shared some leadership tips with the Associates and emphasised that the ability to convey visions and missions effectively through one's actions was one of the key traits of a good leader. He advised the Associates to structure the vision of the Council by collating opinions from every member of the Council and forming a collective idea. In order to achieve the Council’s vision, Zi Shuen stressed the importance of knowing the most effective and appropriate actions to take. He also encouraged Associates to express gratitude for every teammate’s effort regardless of failure or success. Moving on, in the second address by the outgoing Deputy National Executive Director (DNED) and Council Policy and Strategy (CPS) Director Sylvia Soh, she expressed her hopes in continuing to participate in the 9th Council’s future activities and events such as peer learning sessions and Induction Day. Outgoing Internal Affairs and Performance (IAP) Director May advised the 9th Council to ensure active participation of everyone in ICMS. The outgoing Secretarial Division Director (SD) and Finance Division Director (FD) Loong Che Xing hopes that the incoming SD will maintain strong connections with SD from other chapters and highlighted the need for active teamwork and collaboration. Furthermore, Outgoing External Outreach and Publicity (EOP) Director Goh Jia Lin stressed the importance of being comfortable with unknown circumstances and willingness to learn from everyone. Lastly, Zi Shuen concluded the review in a closing address by expressing his hopes for the 9th Council Associates to cherish like-minded and driven friends that we make in ICMS and to drive ICMS towards greater heights.

The highlight of the AGM was the handover ceremony which was conducted by the 8th Council followed by a presentation by the newly appointed Directors of the 9th Council. The missions and vision of the 9th Council include expanding the outreach of ICMS in Singapore, empowering and cultivating professionalism among Malaysian undergraduates in Singapore and understanding ICMS as a platform to develop holistically. The CPS Division aims to introduce a buddy system to tackle the issue of disengagement of Associates who recently joined ICMS. Increasing publicity and recruitment is also one of the main focuses of the CPS Division. SD plans to adopt more systematic and easy data access with Google Drive. FD would focus on financial sustainability by preparing an annual budget, event budgets, a simple flowchart for reimbursement procedures and finding a regional sponsor. CR will identify and build long-term corporate relationships with regional Partners & Sponsors while tapping into our connections with Alumni to find a potential sponsor. Additionally, IAP plans to enhance the value of associateship by organising relevant events and activities such as Peer Learning Sessions. PDI aims to plan and organize 9th Council’s flagship event and work with IAP in organising Peer Learning Sessions. Lastly, EOP will focus on reaching out to more Malaysian organisations and societies from different universities in Singapore.
The last agenda was the Q&A session by the 8th Council and the 7th Council. Some concerns that were raised focused on the aim for an increase in recruitment, the feasibility of the 9th Council’s work plan and the issue of the lack of interest of Singapore companies in Malaysian organisations. Incoming NED, Daphne Ng officially ended the AGM by expressing her best wishes and regards to the 9th Council.

MAYBANK: BEYOND THE BANK
Shedding our blazers and business casual gear for active-wear - the UK Chapter hit the sunny outdoors (and indoors) for our Maybank collaborative event centered around the ins and outs of digital banking. In conjunction with GRADUAN during the Malaysian Career & Education Fair and Maybank, the UK chapter organised a day of educational and eye-opening fun with the event; Maybank: Beyond the Bank. Held on the 1st of April 2017 at University College London, participants had to go through a series of challenges, amazing-race style, while utilizing their pitching abilities and problem-solving skills. Think escape room, but make it corporate. The tasks assigned to them throughout the race were all aimed to provide insights into investment banking and the commercial world. The event was kicked off by an introductory speech made by our very own Aliyyah Ausrin, Co-Director of Project Development and Initiatives and our emcee for the day. Following that, Maybank also presented an introductory speech and shared about the ongoing partnership of seven years they have had with ICMS and introduced their representatives f rom both Malaysian and UK branches. After a unique icebreaker session involving missing shoes to kickstart the day, the main event commenced.

31 participants were split into two groups and five teams that corresponded with the two pillars of Maybank digital banking that were chosen to be the central themes of the event; Maybank’s Chatbot server and Rebate strategies. The race comprised of four stations, and the teams were equipped with “bank cards” that were given at the start and throughout the game. These cards contained points but could be cashed in for clues to give the team a headstart in the race. At each station, teams had to pitch to representatives f rom Maybank in order to progress to the next station. Those who impress the representatives then scored more bank cards (which also contained points). So this was not only a race against time; it was a race where the quality of every pitch and action was taken into account and evaluated by the judging representatives. From hacked servers to legal issues, cracking codes and solving spontaneous crises while coming up with table-shaking pitches, participants were on their toes as they whizzed through the challenges in the day, with a quick lunch break in between. The final task saw the teams utilizing all their clues to unlock the last luggage and to have one last big pitch. Participants also had an opportunity to receive feedback f rom the representatives present, further providing them with quality advice that will assist them in the near future. The day ended with the announcement of the winning team, of which earned a fast track placement to Maybank’s Assessment centre and feedback provided by the representatives f rom Maybank as well as a closing remark.

ICAEW-ICMS SECOND IMPRESSIONS
On Friday 5th April 2019, ICMS hosted its “Seconds Impressions 2019” event in a successful collaboration with ICAEW, our long-standing strategic partner. The event took place in the grand building of Chartered Accountants Hall in Moorgate Place, London and garnered the support of the 10 participating companies including ICAEW, EY, Maybank, PwC, KPMG, CIMB, RHB, UOB, Samsung and Maxis.

This networking event adopted the concept of ‘speed-dating’ in which participants were given five minutes with each of the ten participating companies to make a lasting impression. This provided a valuable opportunity for graduating students to potentially secure a job before returning to Malaysia to kick-start their career. The two representatives sent by each company were responsible for assessing participants who might be considered for a proper interview for their graduate programmes.

At 9 am, the event began with dividing the participants into two groups in order to ensure efficient use of time and smooth management of event flow. Following a quick briefing on “Seconds Impressions” and the structure and content of the event, the first group of participants proceeded to the Great Hall where the networking session would proceed. As the day progressed, participants rotated from one company to the next, confidently presenting themselves during their pitches in hopes of making a lasting impression and securing a placement opportunity at their desired company. As they raced against time, participants had to maintain the high standard of their pitches and to express their knowledge and interest in the particular field. While the first round of speed interviews progressed, the second group attended a ‘Ready-to-work’ session conducted by ICAEW. As the first session concluded, the two groups would exchange roles as the second group head to the Great Hall for the second round of speed interviews. The conclusive events that followed were closing remarks and networking amongst the participants and the company representatives. The support of ICAEW, as well as the ten participating companies, have contributed greatly to the success of the event.

ICAEW MALAYSIA BUSINESS CHALLENGE 2019 On the 26th of April 2019, the long-anticipated annual ICAEW Malaysia Business Challenge 2019 was brought back once again in a strategic partnership between ICAEW and ICMS. The event was held in Sofitel Damansara Kuala Lumpur in search of the brightest minds and skilled future business leaders. A total of 21 shortlisted teams gathered from all over Malaysia to stand their chance at claiming their title as Malaysia’s representative. The event took off with a warm welcome by Loh Wei Yuan, Head of ICAEW Malaysia. The participants were then introduced to the format, rules and regulations of the competition, as well as the judges for the competition. The esteemed panel consisted of a remarkable line up of Partners and Heads from EY, Sunway TES, Maybank, PwC, Samsung, UOB, KPMG, BDO and Grant-Thorton. The 21 teams were given the task to solve a case study based on a real-life business scenario centred around the theme of the 4th Industrial Revolution. Based on the business scenario and questions, the teams were required to understand, plan and propose solutions in the form of a slide deck presentation as a team.

Entering the final round, a winning team was selected by the judges from each breakout room to move onto the next stage. The 3 successful teams; Team AnswerBank, Team End Game and Team Diversification were required to propose a solution to the given ad-hoc business problem in addition to the existing business scenario. In evaluating the Individual Award category for Best Speaker, 3 selected candidates were given 2 minutes to answer a final question from the panel of judges. As the agenda of the competition approached its finale, 3 special team awards were conferred based on the observations and scores given by the judges in terms of agility, collaboration and innovation. The ‘Most Agile Team’ was awarded to Team AnswerBank of Sunway College, the ‘Most Collaborative Team’ went to Team UTManiacs from UTM while The Captivators of TARUC bagged the ‘Most Innovative Team’ award. Hailing from Monash University, Daniel Tan Jun Liang was awarded the Best Speaker of the challenge. Finally, the two Grand Prize winners for the ICAEW Business Challenge were crowned - Team Diversification from University of Nottingham Malaysia and Team End Game from Sunway University. Taking home the grand prize of RM3,000 each, the top 2 winning teams will go head to head with six other national champions at the South-East Asia Business Challenge in Singapore. Additionally, a highlight of the ICAEW Malaysia Business Challenge was the concurrent ICAEW Career Fair held at the venue from 12:00 pm to 2:30 pm. The career fair showcased outstanding employers and companies such as EY, Maybank, Sunway TES, PwC, BDO Malaysia Genting Malaysia, Grant Thornton, KPMG, Samsung and UOB. Open to the participants of the Business Challenge and members of the public, the career fair was well received and provided insight for students on potential career pathways while addressing questions and concerns regarding the available employers. Tying up the exhilarating event for the day, an exclusive forum titled “What Does it Take to be Hired?” was hosted to shed light on employment and hiring, posed and prepared by the participating teams of the business challenge prior to the forum. The forum panellists consisted of Human Resources Department leaders of the participating employers in the ICAEW Career Fair from PwC, UOB, KPMG and UOB. The collaborative efforts of ICAEW along with the regional sponsors, the panel of judges and participating employer companies attribute greatly to the overall success of the event.
