America is slowly but unstoppably turning into a bilingual society. As a matter of fact, in some states daily life is already bilingual. The latest surveys on this topic show that by 2044 the US is expected to be the largest Spanishspeaking country with about 130 million of Hispanics, surpassing Mexico. Considering that English and Spanish are the two most important languages in today’s world, we can conclude that, thanks to this growing bilingualism, the US is in an ideal position for international trade as well as the labor market. Hispanics are transforming and adding to the definition of what it means to be an average American. So learning Spanish and becoming a part of this bilingual mainstream might be a good investment in your future too!
At Instituto Cervantes we aim to help you with a wide range of Spanish courses, an amazing library and a broad offer of cultural events that will increase the understanding between English- and Spanish-speakers. I hope you will enjoy this program; we are open to your input and appreciate any suggestions to improve our offer! ¡Bienvenido al Instituo Cervantes!
Ignacio Olmos, Executive Director

Opening! Thursday, April 23, 7pm Thru May 14 Free Admission
The coexistence of improvised writing and labor-intensive drawing are the trademarks of artist Anne Gilman. This coexistence becomes the means of processing information from both a verbal and non verbal perspective. The use of English and Spanish, side - by - side with the work of writers in the Spanish language, are frequent sources of inspiration in her artistic evolution. These writings also take on an artistic and plastic function of prime importance, parallel to her drawings. This will be confirmed by twenty works, some of them in large format. ROUND TABLE: Descifrar/to decipher, decode, figure out Tuesday, April 28, 7 pm Free Admission While the exhibition is o view, join Brett Littman, the Executive Director of The Drawing Center, as well as Alex Zafiris, freelance writer and Senior Art Editor of Guernica Magazine, as they discuss the work of artist Anne Gilman connection with her current show in the gallery. This show features a selection of the costumes, posters and furniture that Agatha Ruiz de la Prada created during more than thirty years of work. The newness and optimism that define her creations appears in all her designs, especially in her graphic productions, where spontaneous and dynamic lines are used in both the typography and the contours of shapes, and relate to her characteristic live colors, the extreme stylization of motifs and the omnipresence of her symbols: hearts, flowers and stars. CASTILE-LA MANCHA AND NEW YORK PHOTO EXHIBITION BIENNIUM CERVANTES
Opening! Monday, April 13, 7pm Thru Sunday, April 19 Free Admission This photographic exhibition poses a very ample game of visual comparisons of both shapes and volumes, between two places: the mythical land of Don Quixote, Castilla-La Mancha, and the most iconic city in the world, New York. Two places, apparently so distant and dissimilar, but with many similarities. An exhibition by José Talavera and Víctor Prieto.

DESERT ECHOES PABLO M LURE AND SOLEDAD LEONICIO C
Opening! Thursday, July 9, 7pm Thru July 25 Free Admission Painting and sculpture come hand in hand to offer a unique experience. The work of Pablo McClure, one of the most solid productions among Chilean painting, delves into the space, the pictorial subject matter, and especially into the movement through which opposing elements come to light and give rise to new forms. The sculptures of Soledad Leonicio share similar topics of inquiry, using discarded materials that she transforms into works of art, with shapes inspired by the light and the silence of one of the most arid and enigmatic deserts in the planet: the Atacama.

A micro-play from a story by Jean Cocteau Adapted and performed by Alfredo Tauste Directed by Rafael Abolafia A micro-theater performance inspired by The Human Voice by Cocteau. One actor. One small audience. One condensed space. Intimate theater. A victim of love waits for the call that will both give him life and take it away from him. The wait and hope filled with desperation. (In)communication, the solitude of big cities, the option of living a lie and the addictions that create emotional dependency. One everyday phone call in which what isn’t said is as important as what you hear. A tribute to everyone who is alone in NYC. The Smiths, The Martins, Mary and the Fire Chief represent the absurdity of daily life. What Ionesco called ‘The Tragedy of Language’ more than half a century ago is still relevant today.

Cartas de amor a Stalin (Love Letters to Stalin) imagines the devastating effects of that phone call on the writer, as it explores the complex relationship between power and art. Imagine a ballet where NAO robots and humans dance to Maywa Denki’s mechanical musical orchestra, whose instruments double as witty art installations. “Robot” is a 90-minute upside down trip through a magical, topsy-turvy world in which everything becomes its other.

Free admission
Fetén Fetén is much more than the musical project of Jorge Arribas and Diego Galaz; it is the language of the soul turned into harmony. The music of this singular duo is a road through the memory of our roots and traditions. Their compositions guide us through dance rhythms, through fox-trot, vals, chotis, seguidillas or habaneras, making us sway with their chords across the Iberian Peninsula and making us fly from Italy to Japan, or Argentina to Portugal. Their live performances are a once-in-a-lifetime experience, where a perfect fusion with the public is achieved.

General Admission: $20 | ICNY Members: $10
Latin Grammy Winner in 2007 for the album "I love Tango" Is the Bandoneon a living creature? It may seem so.…In the hands of a skilled musician it starts to grumble and whine, to breathe and to sing its heart out. Few people can play it like Raúl Jaurena - he literally embraces it and elicits from it the whole range of emotions that this unique instrument is able to evoke. When New York Times reporter Mireya Navarro married the man of her dreams, she inherited the whole package: not just two strong-willed adolescents but Eddie, a manipulative mutt with his own agenda. In her unflinchingly honest, astringently funny, and ultimately heartfelt memoir, Stepdog, Navarro shares her singular story of trying to become the “alpha dog” in her own house.

Free Admission In Spanish
A portrait of Kloaka, the group that started a poetic revolution in 1982 in Peru under the motto “We have to break with everything.” A unique group that followed in the wake of the European avant-garde movements, Colombian “nadaísmo” or Mexican “infrarealismo,” as well as English literary modernism, the Beat movement, and the libertarian ideas connected to rock (Lennon's Legend), hippie culture and punk anarchy. Participants: the cofounders of Kloaka, poets Roger Santiváñez and Mariela Dreyfus; visual artist Ulla Berg, scholar Olga Rodríguez, Zachary Payne, editor of the most recent anthology about this movement, and Freddy Roncalla, who will sing songs from the period in Quechua and Spanish.
