WELCOME

BIENVENIDOS

One of the many reasons to learn Spanish these days is that NYC is undeniably turning into a bilingual city. Don’t stay behind: by learning Spanish at Instituto Cervantes you too can become a part of New York’s bilingual community. In this edition of our Cervantes magazine you will find language courses that fit your needs, as well as an ambitious cultural program that brings the best of the culture of the entire Spanish-speaking world to New York: great writers like Antonio Muñoz Molina, Javier Cercas, César Aira, Carmen Boullosa and Guadalupe Nettel as well as works of splendid artists like Goya, Dalí, Garcia-Alix and Ruven Afanador. We will present debates on fundamental global topics of the 21st century, like the influence of new technologies, the achievements of our scientists and the Hispanic immigration in America (with Rebeca Grynspan). There will also be a lot to listen to this winter: jazz, classical music and a flamenco festival. Last but not least, a new series: Cervantes Comedy, a different and humorous way to look at a variety of themes as another way of thinking culture. The ICNY Library, one of the largest specialized libraries in the Hispanic world, will help you to become familiar with a world that already is a part of the US.

We invite you to take part in these exciting experiences and to give us your feed back and help us to improve our work day after day.

Ignacio Olmos, Executive Director

Great Voices from Mexico & USA Live to Write

Series

Great Voices from Mexico & USA Carmen Boullosa Phillip Lopate Guadalupe Nettel Nick Flynn Boom! A word that can be used to describe the Mexican narrative, given the great number of fiction writers of great complexity and quality, a literary explosion for which the United States is a soundboard for shared topics and concerns within the fiction genre. Through this phenomenal series, New Yorkers will now have the opportunity to hear from key protagonists representative of this movement including Guadalupe Nettel, Carmen Boullosa, Nick Flynn & Phillip Lopate.

CARMEN BOULLOSA & PHILLIP LOPATE CONFESSIONS For someone to write about what no one else dares to say regarding him or herself, and to do it through the particular freedom offered by essays and poetry, is an act of courage only attained by a select group of writers. It is an act that never ceases to be a reflection about the problems that concern them and to which they constantly return. Boullosa and Lopate, two Manhattan spirits, a pair as unintentional as it is exquisite, will delight the audience by sharing their desires, obsessions and reflections. Moderated by critic and writer Daniel Shapiro.

GUADALUPE NETTEL & NICK FLYNN FACE TO FACE  General Admission: $10 | ICNY Members: $5  in Spanish & English with simultaneous translation

According to Pliny the Elder, all animals know what they want except man. Guadalupe Nettel, winner of the Premio Herralde 2014, takes it one step further, claiming that human beings also lack a sense of self. The seven stories comprising the Mexican author’s recently published English edition, Natural Histories, center on these two notions and are closely tied to the work of Nick Flynn, in which preoccupation with memory becomes a concern with the nature of being.

Ignoring verisimilitude is one of the ways to tear down the division between fiction and reality. César Aira tells stories, sometimes with many realist overtones, but he always upsets the plausible and avoids incidental elements to set his story. The Argentine author will discuss his most recent English publication, The Musical Brain and Other Stories, with Sergio Chejfec, inviting us to that peculiar universe which proves that in life there are events that cannot be explained by Western Rationalism.

REBECA GRYNSPAN HISPANIC IMMIGRATION IN AMERICA  

General Admission: $10 ICNY Members: $5 In English with simultaneous translation

The Hispanic population in the United States is growing. It is the largest minority in the country in both cultural and demographic impact. Its cultural influence is so prevalent that entire communities and cultural networks have been formed, and have become an active and sizeable part of American society. In spite of this, it is estimated that there are around eleven million undocumented immigrants. The ability of the United States to efficiently manage and make the most out of this wealth is a task that remains unfinished in the US of the 21st century, so as to establish the conditions for a population influx that is legal, organized, safe, and that respects human rights. What should be the guidelines to follow in order to attain this goal? Which tools and strategies are needed?

Wine program

AT INSTITUTO CERVANTES Thursdays, 6pm-9pm (Winter 2015) Single tasting $95 / Three tastings $275* / Six tastings $540* In English Beyond Cabernet and Chardonnay we can find a plethora of wines that are waiting for you to be discovered. If you want to be ahead of the wine curve, we invite you to become part of the Spanish wine tastings at Instituto Cervantes. The WINE PROGRAM at INSTITUTO CERVANTES offers an exciting and enlightening series of TASTING SEMINARS to venture beyond obvious wine landscapes and discover the rich and diverse world of THE WINES OF SPAIN. Started in 1999 by wine writer and educator Helio San Miguel, our popular WINE PROGRAM offers tasting seminars ranging from introductory to advanced levels that cover all of Spain’s major wines areas, grape varieties, winemakers, wine styles and hot topics in the wine world. 12 different wines will be tasted in each individual seminar. The program includes monthly introductory seminars and weekly in-depth tastings. Each individual seminar is an independent unit that focuses on a single theme such as a region, wine style, vintage, wine topic, or sometimes even on specific wineries or winemakers. At the same time, some seminars are related to others –they are about different regions, or focus on specific vintages or grape varieties — allowing participants to explore more in-depth what fits their interest the most. 50
