PUBLISHER’S POV

LIVING BEAUTIFULLY L

eave it to an amazing architect to understand and help define how to Live Beautifully, our mantra and something I care deeply about. Further, how impressive that one day a magazine editor led the charge on one of the most noted architectural projects of the 20th Century, the Case Study Houses, which fascinates me today and inspired our cover. Back in 1945, John Entenza, editor of Arts & Architecture magazine, was interested in the concept of designing and building affordable, easy-to-build homes for the housing boom that was coming at the end of WW II with the homecoming of millions of soldiers. He launched a program to create 36 protypes for modern homes and brought the star-chitects of that era—Richard Neutra, Charles & Ray Eames, Pierre Koenig and Eero Saarinen, among others—to Los Angeles to design Case Study Homes that pioneered new construction materials and methods, contemplating the new ways that people would live in a contemporary home, like listening to music, entertaining and relaxing.

Renee M. Dee Publisher @reneeldee @youriconiclife

From this study, we saw the introduction of open floor plans and living spaces that connected the inside to the outside with big windows that maximized natural light, sliding doors that created air flow and plants that helped cool the home. Using materials like cement blocks, plywood and industrial glass dramatically reduced costs, and raw metal was used because it could support structure. Now you know where that came from. As I planned a celebratory party at the newly opened and architecturally stunning Christopher’s at the Wrigley Mansion (read story on page 56), I felt a Mid-Century modern LA vibe. When Chef Christopher Gross said his new restaurant felt like an iconic photograph, “A Shot in the Dark” by Julius Shulman, of an iconic home in LA designed by Pierre Koenig as part of the Case Study Homes, our ICONIC interest was piqued—that iconic shot is one of my all-time favorite photographs. So inspired by that image, I simply couldn’t resist today’s newest iconic location for our cover and fall fashion shoot, because that inspiration truly calls to mind what it means to Live Beautifully.

opportunity to provide high-quality, affordable and beautiful modern outdoor furniture that was good for the environment, too.

The three met while working at start-up mattress brand Tuft & Needle. The entrepreneurial atmosphere created there contributed to Arambula, Fretto and Lee always thinking about the “next big thing” for their industry.

The company’s first collection, The Haven Collection, is based on a modular format. Lee explains, “This allows the set to grow with the consumer. There’s an opportunity to add additional modules and continue to build out the arrangement as needed. We don’t want somebody to throw away our furniture because their life circumstances change.” A shared-leg design adds sturdiness and links pieces together with a simple design.

When Tuft & Needle was acquired, the guys got together and decided it was the right time to venture into the outdoor living space. They used sustainable, high-quality materials; creating simple, elegant designs; and offered a reasonable price point. They saw an

Sunbrella prides itself on sending no waste to landfills and offers fabric lines made with 50 percent to 90 percent post-consumer recycled yarns. Neighbor also ships its furniture in flatpack boxes, saving space and minimizing fuel usage. What’s next for these entrepreneurial friends? Beyond expanding their products’ color selections, they’re also working on creating new items, including rugs, upholstered ottomans and accent tables. They even envision Neighbor sling chairs and poolside lounge chairs. “We’re expanding into the focal point of the indoor of the home: the dining room and kitchen,” Lee says. “We recently added dining tables created from solid teak, which will include some woven chairs.” For Arambula, Fretto and Lee, the possibilities are endless. They intend to carry their mission of quality and sustainability with them no matter what market they enter.

Interiors, which offers residential, retail, commercial and hospitality design. “Eighty percent of my work is in Europe, London, Italy and Moscow,” she says. “It’s allowed me to work in different parts of the world as a result of not having a particular style and being curious and adventurous in design and not wanting really to be pigeonholed.” Recently, the designer launched a small tabletop line, Joy Moyler Atelier. Inspired by New York City, the black-and-white collection, adorned with a touch of platinum, features nine pieces, with 50 units available of each design. “We sold out except for four little pieces, and I have some new items coming soon,” Moyler says. “That’s got a lot of my time and attention because I just love tabletops.” For the full story on Moyler, go to iconiclife.com and hear from her on ICONIC HOUR with Renee Dee podcast.

The glamorous Gatsby-esque 20s followed a time of turmoil, and the country entered a time of celebration and parties. Once again, it’s out with the old, in with the bold—the age of excess is back, and it’s time to celebrate like it’s the 1920s.

The historic Arizona Biltmore is reimagined for the 21st Century. By Dena Roché

S

ince 1929, the Frank Lloyd Wright-inspired Arizona Biltmore has dazzled travelers with its unique style and playful sense of glamour. Recently, the hotel underwent the largest renovation in its history. Recently, it emerged with a look that is sexy, bold and modern but still pays homage to its history. “Working on a historic property, you’re not trying to create something that looks like it was possibly original,” said Erik Peterson, lead architect for PHX Architecture and a former intern at Wright’s Taliesin Architects. (continued on p. 40)

The bones of the Biltmore weren’t altered, and the property still retains the geometric designs and “Biltmore Block” that are instantly recognizable. The reimagination involved adding several new amenities, including the outdoor Spire Bar, which features a 30-foottall spire that was inspired by Wright’s design for the Arizona State Capitol. Nearby, a new adults-only pool centers around a 140-yearold Saguaro. Foodies will revel in the new signature restaurant, Renata’s Hearth. Chef Jesus Figueroa Ortega’s menu pays homage to his Hispanic heritage and centers on smoke and Latin flavors. Adjacent to Renata’s and the birthplace of the Tequila Sunrise cocktail, the

40

Wright Bar is the epitome of art deco sexy with its new black-anddeep green color palette, mirrored ceiling and peacock tiles. The remodeled Tierra Luna Spa is poised to stand out. Featuring 12 treatment rooms, including one with its own patio and a $17,000 outdoor slate soaking tub, the spa celebrates the earth, moon and astrology. Twenty-eight stand-alone cottages were transformed by the teams at PHX Architecture and interior design firm Virserius Studio into couple’s sanctuaries. The interiors feature a warm, contemporary aesthetic, and many sport rooftop decks, providing romantic places to watch Arizona’s gorgeous sunsets. According to Wright, “Every great architect is, necessarily, a great poet. He must be a great original interpreter of his time, his day, his age.” It’s clear that the architects and designers charged with reimagining the Biltmore have done just that and built upon an icon that continues to delight travelers today and into the future.

Instead, the goal was to seamlessly blend new with old in a style that is complementary and cohesive. One imagines that the look is something Albert Chase McArthur, Wright’s student and the original architect of record, and Wright, the consulting architect, would have created if they were designing today.

Innovative Chicago designer brings his elevated POV to the Valley

s the architectural aesthetic in Arizona becomes yet even more global and sophisticated, designers well-versed in a modernistic approach are inspired to make an impact.

By Jillian Vaughn

Nicholas Moriarty Interiors is a multi-disciplinary, full-service interior design firm, focused on full-scale interior renovation and design projects.

Nicholas Moriarty, with his namesake award-winning firm in Chicago, is working with clients here more than ever, as so many of his current clients are underway with second homes in Arizona. “I am loving the desert and all the talent here, and I plan to establish a studio in the Valley to be closer to my clients and escape the Chicago winters,” he says.

“Our work is differentiated by our forward-thinking and client-focused approach to design. Whether we 42

partner on space planning, kitchen design or furniture selection, our process is efficient and meticulous. We pride ourselves on leading with transparency to deliver a white-glove experience and a beautifully luxurious result,” he says. Moriarty, who has partnered with celebrities, Fortune 500 executives, doctors, lawyers and artists, believes that a clients’ space should look like their space. His firm is a partner in helping to elevate it with his signature eclectic, contemporary and modern style. Plus, he serves as ambassador for four important brands—Brizo, Monogram, Robern and Baldwin—giving his clients early access to new designs. Moriarty says he is a modernist at heart with his earliest aesthetic memories revolving around Le Corbusier, the Bahaus Movement, and artists like Andy Warhol, Anselm Kiefer, Gerhard Richter and Jasper Johns. It is through Nicholas’ fundamental understanding of Modernism that he is able to interpret and actualize a variety of design styles. Le Corbusier once said, “good design is intelligence made visible.” “Those words stand firm in the roots of my firm,” he says.

ccording to Kevin Buckler, wine and racing are actually very similar businesses.

“You know the joke that the way you get a small fortune in the wine business is to start with a large one,” he remarks. “It’s the same in the racing business. “Growing up, my friends and I went to a lot of car rallies. My childhood was a bit like 44

ICONICLIFE.COM

‘American Graffiti,’” the 62-year-old adds. “I always had sports cars and eventually a track car. I loved it.”

In 1993, Buckler founded The Racers Group, which provided service, parts, arriveand-drive events and training to the industry. Two years later, a friend who owned sandwich chain Togo’s gave Buckler the chance to race for him at the California Grand Prix. Driving a rebuilt 1970 Porsche 911, Buckler stunned the racing world by winning. The Racers Group holds the record for the most wins and podiums of any independent grand touring (GT) team in North American racing history. Buckler’s accomplishments include four wins at the Rolex 24 in Daytona and, on his first attempt, a win at the prestigious 24 Hours of Le Mans. Buckler went on to launch Adobe Road Winery with his wife, Debra, in 2002. They named the business in honor of the Petaluma, California, road on which they first purchased fruit. Today, the winery produces a number of varietals and blends, many of which have been awarded

90 points or more by The Wine Advocate’s rating system.

For example, its Racing Series showcases four premium reds that celebrate different moments on the track: Apex, a 91-point cabernet sauvignon blend; The 24, a 92-point Rhone-style blend; Redline, a 91-point red blend and Shift, a 93-point blend. Next year, Adobe Road will unveil a $15 million tasting room and entertainment complex along the riverfront in downtown Petaluma, becoming the city’s first working winery. The almost 14,000-square-foot facility will include a hospitality suite, outdoor event spaces and a motorsports museum. Buckler also wants to take his wine country show on the road, and this year decked out a 40-foot trailer, creating the first pop-up winery that will provide beverages at everything from private VIP parties to large events. Whether behind the wheel of a car or behind the scenes creating a cabernet blend, Buckler continues to push boundaries and win with Adobe Road Winery.

Racing Legend Kevin Buckler crosses the finish line with his Racing Series of fine wines at Adobe Road Winery.

Expanding upon the expertise offered by longtime Executive Chef Beau MacMillan, the resort added two culinary powerhouses to his team—Chef de Cuisine at Elements Samantha Sanz and Bar Chef at Jade Bar Christiaan Röllich. A two-time James Beard nominee, Sanz was most recently chef de cuisine of Talavera, at Four Seasons Resort Scottsdale at Troon North, where she became one of the youngest chefs in the Four Seasons brand. Nogales, Mexico-born Sanz got her start at Elements, so this marks her return. Author of BAR CHEF: Handcrafted Cocktails, Röllich hails from A.O.C. and Lucques, both notable in Los Angeles. Forbes has called him “one of LA’s most innovative mixologists.” Röllich got his start in the bar trade at Les Deux Café, where he worked for extra income while pursuing an acting and modeling career, which included standing in for Brad Pitt in Ocean’s Eleven. Röllich says there’s a lot of talk about mixology these days, but what distinguishes him in the bar scene is his love of working in the kitchen to make his own bitters, syrups, liquers, juices and vermouths. He invents new, innovative craft cocktails, and most likes to be known as a bar chef., bridging the collaboration between the kitchen and bar; he is the only bar chef in the U.S. This makes Sanz and Röllich the perfect pairing to share some dinner inspo.

Place all the ingredients in a blender except the ice and pulse quickly once until the ingredients start combining. Once the ingredients are half-way blended, add the ice. The ice will prevent the mix from getting hot and turning into an unpleasant color. Taste the mix and season with sea salt accordingly. Once the mix tastes good and is balanced, strain through the fine mesh strainer. Place in the refrigerator so it gets really cold. 48

ICONICLIFE.COM

In a mixing bowl, place the masa and slowly incorporate the sparkling water with a whisk. Once you have no lumps, season with salt. Heat the oil to 340 to 360 degrees to fry. When the pan reaches the correct temperature, use a spoon to drizzle the mixture over the pan. Let the mix crisp for about 3 to 5 minutes. Carefully remove the masa crunch from the oil and place on a plate with a paper towel to remove excess oil. Immediately season with salt.

Plate the Dish

Place the thinly sliced tuna on a plate shallow enough to hold the sauce. Then drizzle evoo over the tuna and flakey sea salt and lime zest. Garnish with a generous portion of the aguachile, picked mint leaves, the avocado slices, the blue corn crunch and edible flowers.

DRINK

THE VILLAIN Ingredients 1 ½ ounce mezcal, preferably an espadin 1 ounce grilled pineapple, pureed ¾ ounce crafted maple vanilla syrup 1 ounce fresh squeezed lemon juice Rosemary garnish Good quality ice

Method

Overfill a rocks glass with good, clear square ice cubes. Add all ingredients to a steel cocktail shaker with ice. Shake, shake, shake until the shaker is super cold. Using a hawthorn strainer, pour the craft cocktail over the ice and garnish with fresh rosemary sprigs. Cheers! While enjoying your craft cocktail, remember to drink responsibly.

T

he designer, who has dressed celebrities like Elizabeth Taylor, Eva Longoria, Farrah Fawcett, Melinda Gates and even royalty, this year celebrates 32 years of his brand.

Today, Zang’s 2021 collection is inspired by his love for his favorite city, Paris, and features soft and romantic pastel colors like Paris Pink, French Lavender, Marie Antoinette Yellow and a rosy floral print called “Paris My Love.” Having visited Paris more than 30 times in his life, Zang was guided by his many memories of his trips there while designing the collection during lockdown. 54

ICONICLIFE.COM

It all started on the other side of the globe. Toi was born and raised in a small village in Malaysia, the youngest of seven children. Zang moved to New York City 40 years ago to study fashion design at Parsons School of Design. Highly motivated, he finished the rigorous four-year program in just three years. During his second year at Parsons, Zang began working full-time for fashion designer Mary Jane Marcasiano, with whom he worked for five years. In August 1989, Zang started his own collection. He credits his readiness and success to hard work. “There is no substitute for hard work. There are a lot of talented designers, but if you just work the extra hours, it can put you a step ahead of everyone else,” he says.

His first collection was just 13 pieces—his lucky number. Then he sent his sketches on one-page color copies, sending them out to the New York fashion editors. He immediately received a call from Vogue, saying that Anna Wintour received his sketch and loved what she saw. “I was in business for three months and a dress from my very first collection made it into Vogue,” he says. “I was the first Asian American designer championed by Anna. Then my spring 1990 collection caught her attention, and she named me one of the four most promising new American designers of the 90s,” says Zang. Anna and Vogue put me on the fashion map The rest has been fashion history and today, 32 years later, at the age of 60, Toi is filled with gratitude for his beautiful ladies who he loves to make beautiful and his signature hard-working nature. The much-anticipated Christopher’s at the Wrigley Mansion redefines fine dining in America’s fifth-largest city. By Dena Roché Photography by Paul Moore Studio

J

ames Beard Award-winning chef Christopher Gross is leading a new chapter at the ICONIC Wrigley Mansion in Phoenix. He’s reimagined this classic venue as the new home for fine French dining with the unveiling of his latest venture: Christopher’s, a restaurant Gross has dreamed about opening for years. It’s clear that he isn’t simply the executive chef but also the maestro in charge of a 12-course tasting extravaganza that delights no more than 30 diners a night, as well as the visionary who crafted a feast for all the senses. From a unique egg-inspired dish to the table lamps to artist-made plates that feature Gross’ hand-drawn cartoon designs, every element features the chef ’s indelible mark. Tucked on a corner wall near the staging bar is a framed sketch on which the building’s architect, Wendell Burnette, first detailed his vision for the space. If a restaurant can be sexy, this one is the epitome of alluring. The contemporary space is rooted in clean lines, dark colors and floor-to-ceiling windows that, along with a retractable roof, can turn the restaurant into an al fresco experience with the touch of a few buttons. Add in the 180-degree views of the Phoenix cityscape, Camelback Mountain, the traditional Spanish colonial architecture of Wrigley Mansion and the nearby historic Frank Lloyd Wright-influenced Arizona Biltmore, and Christopher’s pours on the romantic ambiance. Art lovers will notice Yves Klein’s famous “Leap into the Void” photograph on one wall. Gross was given permission by Klein’s foundation to produce a single official reproduction of the blackand-white image. Klein’s widow, Rotraut Klein-Moquay, who lives in nearby Paradise Valley, created the striking cobalt blue painting that greets guests when they first walk into Christopher’s.

HAVING A MOMENT

A classic French welcome beverage made tableside sets the stage for the culinary extravaganza to come. Christopher’s uses a special vacuum distilling process to create its own bitters and fruit essences that are infuse into the craft cocktails. From a seat at the chef ’s counter, guests can watch chefs cook over fire in the open-flame kitchen and meticulously plate every dish, which is then presented the same chef who prepared it. The three-hour seasonally focused gourmand feast showcases a selection of standout dishes. The Egg in Egg in Egg is presented in an egg-like dome that Gross designed. Inside is a small egg cup filled with a decadent creamy egg mixture topped with Osetra caviar and gold leaf. The Wood Smoked Cepe Agnolotti is bathed in Meunière sauce and finished with a ridiculous amount of early summer truffle, while a sliced diver scallop served in a béarnaise sauce comes with a quail egg that is to be mixed in.

For the Sounds of Arcosanti Bells and the World’s Best Bleu cheese course, Gross brought the famous bells of Arizona’s Arcosanti to the dining experience. The bells serve as cloches that when lifted unveil Oregon-based Rogue Creamery’s bleu cheese on a black pepper tuile. Diners can opt for wine pairings with each course or select a bottle from a wine list that is the largest in Arizona. Wrigley CEO and wine director, Paola Embry, curated the extensive wine book. During the pandemic when many restaurants were closed and not wanting their allocations of wine, Embry was able to snap up some bottles that are rarely seen in Arizona. While the tasting menu is the heart of Christopher’s, for those who seek something on the lighter side, the restaurant offers Gross’ signature dishes several days of the week on his classics menu. The three-course prix fixe menu includes such favorites as ABC Foie Gras Terrine and Smoked Truffle Infused Filet, which he wowed Julia Child with on her PBS TV show in the 1990s.

Zang Toi

In 1983, this designer to the stars founded Kevan Hall Couture, selling to luxury retailers including Bergdorf Goodman. In 1997, Hall was asked to reinvigorate Halston— the label famous for dressing Jacqueline Kennedy, Lauren Bacall, Elizabeth Taylor, among other notables—as the Design and Creative Director from Fall 1998 to Spring 2000. In 2002, he launched his own signature ready-to-wear line, Kevan Hall Collection, worn by Salma Hayek, Charlize Theron, Katherine Heigl and Michelle Obama. His fall collection is inspired by the stars and galaxy around us.

Trailblazer and trendsetter, Silvia Tcherassi has been awarded one of France’s highest honors–the Officier de L’Ordre Arts et Lettres, a distinction bestowed on leaders of the international arts community. The Columbia-born pioneer of the Latin flair— according to WWD—began her career as an interior designer, but the search for new artistic expressions led her into fashion. Her creations have been presented during Paris and Milano fashion weeks, invited as a special guest by the organizers. Her collections are available worldwide through her 15 namesake stores.

From humble beginnings to renowned international fashion designer, Zang Toi has dressed celebrities like Elizabeth Taylor, Eva Longoria, Farrah Fawcett, Melinda Gates and even royalty, and this year celebrates 32 years of his brand. Zang’s 2021 collection is inspired by his love for his favorite city, Paris. MAROON LAKE Aspen, Colorado

Named after the thick stands of trees that punctuate the rolling hillsides and kiss the steep slopes around Maroon Lake, Aspen reminds us why fall in Colorado is one of the most magical places to be. Consider hopping on a road bike and challenging yourself to a trek up Independence Pass, where you can take in the yellow and burnt-orange leaves along with sweeping views of the region’s snow-capped mountains. If an adrenaline-pumping quest is more your style, then grab a mountain bike and head for one of the many trails, like the new Dust Bunny trail, which takes you into the heart of the woods.

HISTORIC JAMESTOWN Williamsburg, Virginia

Colonial Williamsburg reveals the history-laden landscape of eastern Virginia. But we suggest packing a picnic and journeying to the nature-centric and educational Yorktown Battlefield Colonial National Historical Park, another of the region’s family-focused destinations that does not disappoint. After learning about the country’s battle for independence, hit the Colonial Parkway, a 23-mile roadway that connects Yorktown and Historic Jamestown, site of the first permanent settlement in North America, where colorful forests will delight all ages. Take a break at a local cafe to savor some hot apple cider and experience the cozy feelings for which the season is known. ICONICLIFE.COM

ERIE CANAL

SANDY RIDGE TRAIL

The Erie Canal stretches 360 miles from Buffalo to Albany. Winding stone dust and gravel trails take you along the famous man-made waterway and through charming villages.

The Mt. Hood Scenic Loop traverses the state’s highest peak. Flanked by 12 glaciers and alpine peaks with ever-expansive views, it offers nearly 100 miles of roads that unfold before eager leaf peepers.

Make this a family affair by getting the whole crew on bikes. Consider renting electric bikes so you can hit the trails with ease. Green space abounds with lush grasslands, ravines and forests showcasing a range of trees that seem to stretch forever into the skies above.

Photographers and wildlife enthusiasts can take in the vibrant colors of the local trees changing their leaves from waxy green to sangria-red. Mountain bikers will thrill to the Sandy Ridge Trail System, which includes a growing network of singletrack trails that travel from dense forest to impressive lookout points.

Great Field POSITION A dream team of design talents creates an elegant retreat for NFL star Larry Fitzgerald. By Nora Burba Trulsson

I

n the shadow of Camelback Mountain in Paradise Valley, Arizona, sits a piece of the French countryside. A winding gravel driveway through clipped hedges, stretches of velvety lawn and beds filled with white roses leads to a cobblestone motor court, where you are embraced by the gracious entrance of a home with stone-clad walls, brick detailing and a slate roof. One might feel as though you have arrived at un petit chateau.

Although located thousands of miles from France, the home is replete with the defining characteristics one would expect of a French manor home. To start, the owner is considered nobility in his field. The French-inspired residence was designed for NFL wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald, who has spent 17 seasons with the Arizona Cardinals. Fitzgerald’s career receptions of 1,432 holds the record for the most by any player with a single team, and he is second, alltime in receptions and yardage in NFL history.

ICONICLIFE.COM

75

Pulling from his success on the field, Fitzgerald put together an allstar team to create the home, including architects Mark Candelaria and Meredith Thomson of Candelaria Design, landscape architect Jeff Berghoff of Berghoff Design and interior designer and homeowner’s representative Sara Doto of Longcross Partners. Candelaria recalls that “Mr. Fitzgerald wanted a classic Frenchinspired house using authentic materials. He was clear that he wanted a warm, inviting house for family and friends, as well as a place that was private, where he could escape and relax from his public life.” “We understood that Mr. Fitzgerald wanted a house that was well tailored with clean lines filled with light and connected to the outdoors.” The main house was positioned to maximize the vistas from each room. “We staked out the house and determined proper window heights to capture the views,” says Candelaria. While maintaining the views. The floor plan evolved with a natural uninterrupted flow as you move through the house anchored by a great room with access to shaded patios for outdoor living, privacy for a master suite wing, library and guest quarters.

Pear Blossom Photography

Fitzgerald also asked that the dining room not be an afterthought, but rather a celebratory space. The architects responded with a pavilion-like setting off the great room, featuring walls of steels framed doors on three sides and a ceiling detailed with brick barrel vaults, reclaimed beams, and stone walls matching the exterior façade to create a feeling of indoor-outdoor living.

The materials used on the home accentuate the classic forms of the architecture. Thomson explained that this was accomplished by “hand-chiseled reclaimed Dalle de Bourgogne from France for the stone on the exterior walls with limestone detail and columns.” Thomson goes on to say, “herringbone-patterned brick on the chimney masses and outbuildings, copper chimney pots, gutters and downspouts, and steel-framed windows and doors add to the homes authenticity.”

Pear Blossom Photography

Inside, Candeleria, Thompson and Doto sourced French limestone flooring using a centuries-old finish and fireplace mantles from hand-selected blocks of limestone from a quarry in Bourgogne. They also choose Parquet and chevron wood flooring, all hand-made with white French oak and hand finished in the way of the Old-World masters. Reclaimed beam ceilings create a serene backdrop for the airy interior. As a centerpiece of the great room, a kitchen, pantry and butler’s pantry designed by Christopher Peacock melds warm quarter-sawn white oak and a cool white cabinetry finish with marble countertops. Peacock’s extraordinary work continues through to the master closet and bathroom.

ICONICLIFE.COM

79

The interior furniture and details were integrated into the overall design plan. As Doto explains “Mr. Fitzgerald requested a palette of blue, grey and whites for his home, using custom-made furniture that would fit his frame but remain comfortable for family and friends. His wish was to create a soothing and comfortable setting, with transitional to modern pieces with clean lines that create inviting areas for conversation and lingering.” Contemporary art and simple accessories add finishing touches without fuss or clutter. Doto strongly emphasizes “Mark, Meredith and I shared and collaborated on the exteriors and interiors down to the last door handle to stay cohesive. That’s the secret to success for the client.” Outdoors, landscape architect Berghoff took inspiration from Fitzgerald’s childhood in Minnesota, using wide sweeps of lawn to frame the home, as well as trees and shrubs at the property’s perimeter to provide privacy and underscore the mountain vistas. Fountains, French pots abundant with seasonal flowers, climbing bougainvillea, lavender and a knot garden are strategically placed and perfectly aligned with the overall vision Fitzgerald wanted to achieve. As a final touch, the architects and designer abandoned the idea of a traditional poolside ramada, instead creating a fanciful steel structure with dormers, cupola and lacy pillars that provides post-swim shade and a spot to gather around a brick fireplace during the cooler months.

Pear Blossom Photography

“From the moment you arrive on this property, you feel like you’re in Europe,” says Candelaria. “It’s very much a peaceful retreat, a sanctuary.”

MAKING Martin Riese, the world’s most famous water sommelier, is on a mission to change the way we think about H2O. By Kristen Shirley

F

rom a young age, Martin Riese was fascinated by water. He recalls going on vacation with his family when he was around five years old, and the first thing he did wherever they went was drink tap water and see how it tasted. He recognized that water tasted different in each place, and he wanted to try it all. In 2005, Reise was running a Michelin-starred restaurant in Berlin, when a guest asked why they only had one brand of water but more than a thousand different wines. This guest didn’t like the taste of the particular brand of water, and he wanted to know what Riese could offer him. “I looked at him, and it was almost like in Hollywood movies when you’re surprised, then suddenly you have an idea and there’s a light behind you, like in a cartoon,” Riese says. He began to source different waters, tasted them, and created a water menu for the restaurant. He quickly became a noted water expert in Germany, and in 2010, he was certified as a Mineral Water Sommelier by the German Mineral Water Trade Association. After moving to the U.S., his star quickly rose.

Riese created a water menu at a restaurant in Los Angeles, then began sharing his knowledge on TV and in countless publications. Educating the public about water became his calling. When it comes to bottled water, in the U.S. we drink mostly spring water and filtered tap water. In Europe, mineral water, which comes from a naturally occurring source, is much more common. When selecting bottled water, Riese recommends opting for spring or mineral waters that are sustainably sourced. If you don’t like the taste of a certain water, it’s likely due to the mineral content, so try others until you find one that suits your taste. It’s also important to consider the type of food you are eating. More flavorful dishes can stand up to water with higher mineral content. For Riese, his career is not just about how water tastes. He is using his platform as a call to action. “The bigger picture is for me to bring awareness to water because 780 million people on the planet do not have access to clean and safe drinking water,” he says. “We need to connect together, learn from other cultures, and make sure we’re protecting Mother Nature. That’s the most important thing for me.” ICONICLIFE.COM

aitlyn Wolfe was introduced to design and architecture at a young age after her family moved to Elham, England. The experience of living abroad left her inspired by the character and history of European architecture, leading her to incorporate elements of classic style into her contemporary designs.

Eric Cassée, Kevin Brost

Prior to launching Iconic Design + Build, Kaitlyn gained experience as a project manager and interior designer at a Phoenix-based

residential construction company. During her time in construction, Kaitlyn saw an opportunity to elevate design within the industry. Iconic Design + Build was created to fill that void—to perfectly blend stunning aesthetics with feasibility and functionality. As a licensed general contractor, Kaitlyn provides full-service design services while keeping both the functionality and structural integrity of your space in mind. Her firm has grown dramatically this year.

“Living Beautifully to me means coming home and feeling calm. It means that every detail has been carefully designed with an intention to match one’s lifestyle, functionally and visually.” ICONICLIFE.COM

VERTICAL

GOING 102

Flying cars are finally having their moment.

T

here’s a transportation revolution waiting in the wings, but the concept behind it has been a part of our society’s collective imagination for nearly a century. In fact, it wasn’t too long after the invention of the airplane that Henry Ford embarked on an ill-fated attempt in the 1920s to create an inexpensive personal aircraft for everyone. Although that project stalled, Ford believed flying cars were inevitable, even into his later years, stating in 1940, “Mark my word. A combination airplane and motor car is coming.” Over the past decade or so, there has been a serious push by independent startups as well as established players in the aeronautical industry to make vertical takeoff and landing vehicles (VTOLs) possible. Many of the models being developed are powered by electric motors (eVTOLs) or hybrid electric systems, reducing their carbon footprints while also making them much quieter than traditional helicopters. eVTOLs are also benefiting from the recent rapid improvements in battery efficiency spurred by the development of electric cars and our ever-expanding need for tech on the go. The final piece of the puzzle is the infrastructure needed to support a network of flying cars. The most prominent initiative right now is being led by ridesharing corporation Uber, which is working with a number of third-party companies to develop multivehicle landing facilities, recharge stations and air-traffic software. The best part? Many of the companies developing these vehicles are predicting that production versions will be available in just a few years. So, to stoke your anticipation, here are six of the most promising VTOL designs around.

This six-seater completed its first test flights in mid-2021 in northern California. Though it was a 65-percent scale model, the prototype’s success means that XTI can continue forward with its ambitious plan, which predicts full-scale testing by the end of the year and production within five years. The hybrid electric TriFan 600 boasts a top speed of 345 mph and a range of 1,400 mile—making it something of a VTOL meets light private jet. 104

PEGASUS VERTICAL BUSINESS JET If you’re accustomed to the capacious interiors of private jets, the Pegasus Vertical Business Jet (VBJ) could be the VTOL you’ve been looking for. The aircraft seats eight passengers in large leather massage chairs arranged in four pairs that face one another to facilitate conversation. The VBJ can travel up to 497 mph and as far as 1,320 miles when used as a VTOL. (It can also take off from a normal runway like a conventional jet, which increases its total range to 2,734 miles.) It made its first public showing— in 1:8 scale model form—in late May.

BELL NEXUS Helicopter manufacturer Bell surprised attendees at this year’s Consumer Electronics Show by presenting a full-size mockup of the hybrid-electric Nexus VTOL. Bedecked in carbon fiber and a black paint job that make it look like something Batman might cruise around in, the aircraft’s striking exterior is matched by the plush leather executive seating in the cockpit. A team of six enclosed rotors create lift to get the craft airborne and then rotate to a forward position to provide thrust. Initial versions of the vehicle will rely on a human pilot in some capacity, although the ultimate goal is complete autonomy. ICONICLIFE.COM

AIRBUS A3 VAHANA

German startup Lilium conducted its first successful flight of its new five-seat concept aircraft in June, which follows testing of a two-seat prototype in 2017. The latest model puts a premium on safety by employing 36 independent rotor engines distributed along it wings to power the craft, meaning even in the unlikely case of multiple engine failures, it will stay aloft. The eVTOL also offers an impressive range of 164 miles. The company expects the Lilium Jet to be operating as an air taxi in major cities by 2025.

With the might of Europe’s biggest aeronautical firm providing a tailwind, it’s no surprise that the Airbus A3 Vahana has taken a prominent position in the race for a viable flying car platform. The eVTOL had its maiden flight last year and has conducted more than 50 test flights to date. The completely autonomous single-seat aircraft is powered by eight electric rotors that allow the craft to fly up to 31 miles on a single charge while cruising at 118 mph.

Earlier this year, Boeing and its subsidiary Aurora Flight Sciences completed the maiden test flight of its Passenger Air Vehicle (PAV) eVTOL. This particular model utilizes eight vertical rotors provide lift and a separate fan behind the cockpit to propel the craft forward. Boeing is also working on cargo VTOLs to revolutionize shipping and an A.I.-enabled computer system named SkyGrid, that will facilitate air traffic in this new transportation paradigm.

We challenge you to reimagine your menu beyond pumpkin and squash. We worked with the Omni Montelucia Resort in Paradise Valley for our culinary experience. A charcuterie board is a great way to start. Build your board with an array of flavors and aesthetics in mind.

Tapas gets the conversation going. They also double as decor; you can tray-pass them, serve them at a cocktail table for guests to graze on as they arrive, or take them to the dinner table. Our tapas include Albondigas, Roasted Cauliflower and Lollipop Lamb Chop with Mint Pesto. Preparing tapas items on an open grill with white oak really play into fresh, new flavors. Paella is simple to prepare yet elegant for display, not to mention full of flavor with lobster tail, shrimp, scallops, langoustine and chorizo over forbidden black rice. Paella’s shareability brings about a communal spirit and really brings the table together.

A glass of Champagne upon arrival sets the mood for the evening. A charcuterie board is the perfect starter with rich flavors of meats, cheeses, nuts, olives and roasted vegetables. Refreshing Red Sangria or red wine from Spain pair nicely with traditional Spanish paella. Cloth napkins always.

Long candlesticks set in glass bottles create a dreamy ambience and add lighting.

Place cards always show your guests they are important. Curate your music for the evening to enhance your theme.

Mini bite-sized desserts on a tray can be served after guests leave the table. Pair them with a dessert wine or a nice scotch.

Upon arrival, we love tray-passed bubbles for each guest as they enter. A table with place cards welcomes guests and lets them know you’ve thought of every detail by arranging seating.

KEEP IT LIGHT AND BRIGHT

Although fall celebrations traditionally feature fall colors, we’re craving something light, bright, golden and modern this season.

We styled our table with white and gold tones, punctuating the design with white florals and white pumpkins hand painted with gold. We love decorative plates for every course.

GET OUTSIDE

Weather permitting, consider hosting your get-together outside. A table strewn with candles sets the scene for a dreamy and intimate affair. Gather some lanterns and string lights for additional lighting. Once the sun sets, have some blankets available for guests to cozy up, if needed.

ICONIC

CHERISHING CHIHULY By Rebecca Rhoades

Throughout his 50-plus-year career, Chihuly revolutionized glassblowing, elevating it from a craft into fine art. Glass does not look like glass when under his control. Distorted shapes and bursts of color define his creations, which stretch the limits of the molten medium, both in scale and form. Colossal clusters of iridescent skewers, shimmering like candy-colored icicles, descend from lofty ceilings. Oceans of twisting tendrils in a kaleidoscope of seductive shades appear to sway in the breeze. 128

ICONICLIFE.COM

Chihuly’s otherworldly and ethereal installations, displayed in casinos, botanical gardens, museums and hotels around the world, celebrate the beauty of glass and create a wondrous, even surreal, visual experience. See Chihuly's work at two ICONIC locations—Desert Botanical Garden and Taliesin West—December 3, 2021 through June 19, 2022. Tickets are available at chihulyinthedesert.org. Still active at 79 years old and overseeing production at his eponymous studio in Seattle, Chihuly has received numerous awards and honorary degrees, and his ongoing impact can be seen in the joy and wonder his art brings to those who view it.

Laura Novak

F

antastical. Magical. Luminescent. These are just some of the sentiments used to describe the ICONIC works of perhaps the world’s greatest master of glass, Dale Chihuly.
