HAUS CALL
Renee M. Dee Publisher @reneeldee @youriconiclife
There’s no place like home, and this year has taught us that our homes are more important than ever—a personal sanctuary, retreat and even an escape. Collectively our new guilty pleasure has been renovating and updating like crazy given all the time we’ve had at home and all the new ways we are using our homes today. We’re cooking, gardening, schooling, working, exercising and watching movies from home. My builder friends have shared that almost instantly, clients starting building home gyms, theatre rooms and expanded kitchens in homes already in progress; square footage is on the rise again! Indeed, home is where the heart is and where all the living is…beautiful living if you will. Homes, design and architecture have always been a passion for me and publishing great work has been a privilege. That’s why I so love presenting ICONIC HAUS to all of you—showcasing stunning design, luxury brands and innovation in technology. In this issue, we debut ICONIC HAUS presented by ICONIC LIFE magazine partnered with Temac Development, Candelaria Design and the Joffe Group, sponsored by some of my most favorite luxe home and design brands—launching virtually on iconiclife.com November 27 through December 14, with DESIGN LAB coverage for two months to follow. Don’t miss it! I am so grateful for the 20 talented design teams under one roof, working with design manager Lucia Burns and Tracy McCormac, who gave their time, talent and treasures to create a magnificent luxury designer showhouse, designed by architect Mark Candelaria and Vivian Ayala. Builder Tim McCormac so skillfully executed this 10,000-squarefeet-under-roof estate and has arrived on the scene as a master builder.

Egg-Cellence Curating Culinary-Grade Caviar By Renee Dee
Photo by Natalia Lisovskaya / Shutterstock
C
aviar represents true luxury to fivestar chefs worldwide and passionate foodies who love its distinctive, salty flavor and the elegant experience of enjoying it. Wondering what you need to know about caviar tasting? First, make sure you’ve acquired authentic caviar. Caviar is salted fish roe, but not all salted fish roe is caviar. Caviar refers to the salt-cured fish eggs from different species of sturgeon harvested from the Caspian Sea, including Osetra, Sevruga and Beluga. If it comes from another fish, it’s not true caviar. Then there’s the decision on what to drink: Should caviar be served with a crisp, bubbly Brut Champagne or ice-cold ussian vodka
28
ICONICLIFE.COM
eally, it’s your choice, as both have the acidity to cut through this deliciously salty, oily palate pleaser. The finest caviar should taste neither fishy nor overly salty. Connoisseurs look for shiny, fine-grained translucent spheres, and they should burst or pop sharply in your mouth when the caviar is at optimum freshness. The larger, shinier and more perfect the spheres are, the higher they are in quality. Caviar is best served very cold and raw. A proper caviar tasting is all about the Mother of Pearl spoon, and true caviar aficionados own and use a caviar server, usually a small, beautiful silver dish with an inner glass dish that nests on flaked ice to hold the caviar.

hat do swaying palm trees, sugared donuts and Tupac Shakur all have in common? They are all inspiration for the modern-day Mr. Wonka, whose chocolate empire has taken over the world. Jonathan Grahm began his career at age 15 working in the shipping department of Compartés Chocolate, an artisanal chocolate shop founded in Los Angeles in 0. He quickly worked his way into the kitchen to experiment with recipes like strawberry cheesecake marbled fudge and saffron pistachio. This innate connection to chocolate became the language of his life. So, at just 24, Grahm bought the company and was later recognized on one of orbes 0 Under 0 lists. It’s a reflection of everything I love to put together translated through chocolate,” Graham said.

“
I feel such a strong connection to Compartés: Compartés is me, and I am Compartés.”
His hand-designed packaging features abstract collages and iconic landmarks, making chocolate bars that look trendy enough to carry around in a designer handbag. Unwrapping the desserts reveal a range of vibrant flavors, from Coney Island-inspired waffle cone pieces to home-made peanut butter, rosé wine and smoked sea salt. With seven permanent stores in Tokyo and 200 pop-up shops across Japan, Grahm is a household name both stateside and abroad. But LA, where elly Wearstler designed his flagship boutique, will forever be his muse and his home.
Decoding Her Own Legacy Malene Barnett Explores Her Legacy Through Intuitive Pattern-Making By Livia Hooson

“I want people to be drawn to the work, to ask questions, and to question not only themselves, but to be curious about the Black experience.”
D
iving into the creative world of painter, sculptor, ceramicist and textile-maker Malene Barnett takes you on the plight of a woman decoding her own legacy. Whether it’s the brushing of paint or the shaping of clay, the Brooklyn-based artist is translating her history through craft while addressing themes of social injustice as an act of resilience. Born in the Bronx as a first-generation American, much of her work is informed by her Jamaican and St. Vincent roots as well as her African legacy. She has designed bespoke carpets, custom wallpaper and tilework for renowned hotel chains and corporations, and launched her own eponymous rug-making company, Malene B, in 200 . Her bold textiles include carpets resembling aerial photographs of saffron-colored river beds and 34

splashy montages of muted ink spots that add something unexpected to a space. And her multilayered clay sculptures she hand builds reference the same techniques used in the Yorubaland region of south-western Nigeria. “This is a way to engage in conversation, whether they are comfortable or not,” says Barnett. “My work is just a tool to bring those conversations to the forefront.” It is within this intuitive approach to patternmaking that guides Barnett, and the viewer, to peer past the beauty of the object and deeper into the symbology of where these designs originated. And it is her ability to design artwork that can fit virtually anywhere that makes this artist one to watch.

Exposed to winemakers and great wine from Tuscany to Burgundy and beyond, Jesse Katz gained an appreciation and passion for many wines. FRANCESCO How do you teach a former chef a new trick You give him a camera. And that’s how high-end food photographer Francesco Tonelli got his start. After many years of working in kitchens and hotels across Europe, Tonelli became a professor of culinary arts at The Culinary Institute of America and prominent D chef and food stylist for La Cucina Italiana in Milan. This delicious career consists of developing and styling hundreds of dishes. He en oys having control of the whole process from conception, to shopping, preparing, cooking, styling, lighting, photographing and post-processing, as well as the opportunity to meet incredibly talented designers and creative people from many agencies and clients who devoted their lives to developing food products. According to Tonelli, it’s important to connect
with the client to understand their food and their goals. Think, test, try and try again. Shoot the food as quickly as possible to capture its freshness and fragrance and avoid it sitting on set any longer than necessary. It’s not much different from a good carpenter (measure twice, cut once), he explained. Tonelli loves developing long-lasting relationships with his clients and feels rewarded when they trust that he will deliver what they need on time, without cutting corners or making excuses. This makes the collaborative process more relaxed, pleasant and creative. Upon entering the arena of shooting commercial high-end food photography, he made sure everyone was greeted with a varied, healthy and indulgent breakfast, different every day and featuring the best ingredients. “And for my

ISABEL CANDELARIA EARTH AND IMAGES earthandimages.com
Grand Entry, Gallery & Butler’s Pantry We were honored to design two spaces in ICONIC HAUS. We wanted to create “galleries,” where one can enjoy a stroll to each room. The word gallery inspired us to source fine art. We can display artistry of so many trades and crafts, where the gallery can weave other rooms through the house together, exploiting European tones with accompanying modern touches inspired by the Mod-iterranean architecture. Materials mimic the textures of the antique pots at the front door. The floors feature hand-woven textile rugs, passed down the ages with new modernized patterns. Iron lighting itself combines old world technique with modern style. The inspiration of the space is much like the Earth and Images motto: comfort of the past and thrill of the future. Our inspiration for the butler’s pantry was to complement the main kitchen while mixing Old-World sensibility and a modern twist. Herringbone violet and gold tile, unique to this space, adds a modern flair yet is keenly parallel with Mediterranean colors of royalty. White clay pots from local artists pay homage to silhouettes that have carried on through eras of European history while orschach-like paintings are a nod to modern-day use of abstract art.

Great Room This Modern Mediterranean Great oom is an eclectic mix of classic Old-World details with a clean modern twist. Mod-iterranean style has an emphasis on earthy warmth with natural materials, blending the indoor-outdoor living we cherish in Arizona. Playing off the feel of the vintage Bourbon Bar, modern furnishings are deftly mixed with antique treasures to create a uniquely collected interior. Leathers, boucl , linens, mix of metals, antique pottery and washed woods create texture and depth. A vintage Oushak rug grounds the space. A stately camel colored leather sofa with hair on hide upholstery is mixed with two uniquely detailed neutral lounge chairs. The coffee table is artfully adorned with a mix of books, vintage collectables and earthy ob ects. Two antique Senufo African stools lead into a welcoming spot by the fireplace flanked by low modern metal frame leather chairs and a soft boucle covered ottoman. A Karen Bezuidenhout painting takes center stage above the modern black concrete fireplace surround. Stunning Antique Spanish pots bring the corner a little warmth of the Mediterranean. The harmony of the colors, textures and unique treasures creates a sophisticated welcoming space and a true center of the home.

Bourbon Bar More than ever, homeowners are setting up personal environments for entertaining in the comfort of their own homes. So enters the newest “wish list item, the indoor/ outdoor bar. A popular spot at many of the local restaurants including our personal favorite, the bar at El Chorro Lodge, renovated and redesigned by Vallone Design and Candelaria Design in 200 /20 0. A retractable window system to open the space and serve from the interior bar accommodates everything from an elegant evening cocktail party to a casual afternoon BBQ. To bring in a vintage vibe to a modern-day concept, the black cabinetry and Neolith top are complimented with antique mirror, iron shelving and leather wrapped handles. The raised white oak bar gives warmth to the space. A bar with this aesthetic calls for a mix of vintage and modern styling. A little whimsy off the masculine vibe, we used two Icelandic Sheepskin Acrylic Bar Stools and the elly Wearstler Affinity Lamp. The exterior bar showcases modern woven barstools from Kettal. Spirits to make the perfect Old Fashioned are displayed alongside beautiful cut crystal decanters and glasses. The Painting by Michael Carson plays into the vibe, and the wall sculpture by Holly Wilson was too amazing to not feature.

Amidst a global pandemic and economic crisis, the restorative properties of biophilia are more important than ever. Naturally, we gravitated towards the outdoor entertaining space. Oftentimes, we hear the term “bringing the outdoors in” to enhance an interior. Our goal for the space was to bridge the gap between inside and outside by creating a transitional space that integrates the living room with the pool area. We sourced natural elements, including the wood coffee and side tables, natural fiber area rug, plants and an organic glass sculpture—all while maintaining the interior aesthetic of the home with various pops of gold throughout. We envision this space to be the ideal spot for quiet coffee time, a glass of wine after a long day or an intimate gathering around the fireplace on a chilly winter night.

Culinary Kitchen & Morning Room A graceful Mediterranean style home takes on a Mod/Boho vibe…and the kitchen is no exception It started out with boutique Viking appliances in matte black with rose gold accents, setting the stage for the color black to be a major theme in this home and our kitchen/breakfast area. Black cabinets are brought to the lighter side with countertops and backsplash of Calcutta marble. The addition of natural rift cut oak cabinets adds natural warmth and contrast and compliments the warm terra cotta tones of the tile floor in the breakfast area. With a nod to the texture and pattern of the eye-catching floor tile, we added a lot more texture, with baskets, woven rattan dining chairs, pottery pieces, woven black metal pendant light and a concrete tabletop—all enhancing the playful lightheartedness that the “Mod” element of the home’s design aesthetic suggests.

Pool Oasis & Bistro Patio Inspired by the stunning modern Mediterranean architecture and a vision of a timeless black and white portrait, Dana Dray from luxury outdoor furniture manufacture Brown Jordan was moved to create luxurious outdoor spaces that elegantly wove new designs with the unbothered aesthetic of Mediterranean life. The home’s private courtyard fuses together the legacy of Walter Lamb Aluminum collection, a design from the 0’s reimagined with new life and innovation, with a fresh new take on woven design from the moody Oscar collection. The resulting space provides comfort and intrigue within the monotone aesthetic of the two mix materials collections. Playing off the bold mosaic accents, the pool deck follows suite by paring chaise lounge chairs from the modern Still collection with sophisticated Fire Tables and Brown Jordan’s newest collection H. Named for the first letter of the word “hoy”—“today,” in Spanish—the H collection takes a classic mix of materials for a new spin with its -inch diameter rope creating a dramatic sculptural effect against the collection’s streamlined aluminum frames. The combination of these outdoor spaces and enduring design creates the perfect gathering areas to make timeless memories in luxury and comfort.

Elegant Dining & Wining Experience With the overarching theme of the home being “Mod-iterranean, my personal philosophy of blending classicism with modernity aligned well with this fusion of styles. In true DMID style, we wanted to add edginess but in a subtle way that allows the perfect backdrop for a desert setting. Channeling the softer side of Mediterranean design, we started with a neutral color palette. When working with neutrals, the textures become critical elements in creating drama. The gritty surface of the cork wall covering is balanced with subtle hints of gilded gold. Natural fibers of alpaca boucle and virgin wool are enhanced with passementerie an Italian couturier would be proud of. The dining room allowed the perfect forum to debut a new piece for our EnVie rench for desire) collection; a graceful dining chair. This beauty is dressed in shimmery velvet. Her leather corseted derri re grabs your attention as you enter. The chandelier, with its fluidity of glass mimicking ripples of sand, adds the decadence we are known for. Carefully curated accessories enhance the space while dramatic artwork from Parisienne artist Gregoire Devin adds the edginess we strive for. Entertaining Courtyard With the beautiful architecture of ICONIC HAUS as our backdrop, our goal was to bring in aspects of Modernity in a way that beckons guests to gather and stay. A central element of fire is surrounded by clean-lined furniture in durable fabrics that mimic natural fibers. We are proud to introduce our new collaboration with world-class architectural stone purveyors Materials Marketing. Our inspiration for the collection derived from modern totem poles, blended geometric shapes and contrasts in the elements themselves, all the while embodying the classical modernity we are known for. Nero Marquina and Charcoal Limestone play off each other, offering sophistication and grit that creates beautiful tension. Work from Home Experience With so many more people working from home this year as their new normal, a home office is more essential than ever. In this office, we created a light and airy environment with classic details and modern touches. In lieu of a traditional desk, a worktable is a great way to open up the space and allows the main office space to feel light, airy and uncluttered. A closet houses all the storage needed for file cabinets, supplies and equipment. The beautiful glass desk top showcases ends of wine bottles cast into the glass on a simple metal base, while hand-blown glass crystal rondelles in the console table are reminiscent of beautiful stained glass windows. Hand-made wallcovering is a subtle yet impactful statement to anchor the space and speaks to the overall tone on tone color palette. This helps to keep the room calm and restful to inspire creativity and productivity. Cozy guest chairs allow for family or clients to rest comfortably for any meeting. With this home office, you might even be more inspired to sit down and tackle that to-do-list We are excited to debut technology that makes communicating from home better. With onetouch on a Crestron remote or mobile app, the Crestron HomeTime video conference system enables you to oin and host Zoom meetings without a laptop, using the TV in the ICONIC HAUS home office. The Crestron HomeTime video conferencing system is, quite simply, the most natural, easy and en oyable Zoom conferencing experience for the home.

ANITA LANG IMI DESIGN

Master Retreat Intentional design was the impetus of this evocative master bedroom design. Tapping into the unseen energetic forces of the universe, the room manages to combine natural elements with celestial patterns including sacred geometry. Sacred geometry is based upon the energy patterns that make up our universe. A custom laser-cut wooden trim draws the large-scale pattern of intersecting lines circling the room. Its intricately carved pattern is composed of shapes and lines commonly found in nature that are reflective of energy in the world. Underscoring the celestial motif, black Phillip Jeffries wallcovering creates a backdrop reminiscent of the night sky. An aptly named “Astro” mobile light fixture by Andrew Neyers provides an oversized focal point that is a functional work of art. Furnishings are kept low to the ground for a more intimate feeling, including a custom platform bed with pebble tables. Continuing the conversation around intention, Anita Lang’s custom line, Design 528, debuts a bedding collection. These sustainably sourced bed linens are ethically crafted from hemp, the world’s oldest textile fiber, and are embroidered with the sound frequency patterns of the words “love,” “joy” and “beauty.” Sleep with intentions. The Mod-iterranean architecture lent itself to statement black shutters by Hunter Douglas, as well as the fireplace clad in black marble slab, flanked by two sculptures. Sleek, marble Kelly Wearstler lamps and lightweight linen drapery by Hunter Douglas complete the space.

ASHLI SHIELDS DESIGN OUTSIDE THE LINES designoutsidethelines.com
Master Closet Through bold reflective surfaces, curvilinear and rectilinear lines mixed with a variation of textured materials, our closet design portrays elegance inspired by the ripples of a water droplet. The reflective elements emulate flickers of liquid’s opulence with glints of the contemporary. Subtle curvilinear lines parallel the graceful shape of a droplet falling into a cool pool. The soft undulating lines paired with sharp vertical and horizontal edges mimic those found in the surroundings of water found in nature. The variation of materiality was selected to echo the light and shadow found between the water’s folds. By selecting mirrored surfaces, designing moments of gentle interactions between curving versus linear moments and a fluctuation of distinctive finishes, we created a sophisticated design that parallels the quality of a droplet cascading into a basin of clear water.

Powder Room The powder room should be a show-stopping moment in every home. You want guests to think “WOW ” when they enter. Materials and finishes need to be unusual. Ideally, they should be things that visitors haven’t seen before or are used in an unexpected way. eeping that in mind, we chose fish-tail tile in black, gray and white hues, using an ombre installation. It’s very dramatic, rising from the dark floor and creeping up the wall. The ceilings are high, so we had a custom mirror made for above the super-cool cement floating vanity. It reflects a lot of light back into the space since there is no natural source. The wall-mounted faucet is an unexpected style and finish. The fabulous sconces are another attention-getting moment-very architectural. The Llama framed canvas is intentionally oversized and makes you smile. The powder room design should make your guests comment when they rejoin the party. You want them to be inspired to go home and re-do their own powder rooms

EDDY DOUMAS WORTH INTERIORS FOR TOWN townstudio.com
Game Room & Billiard’s Patio Worth and TOWN’s design concept for the Game oom was to rethink how such a room should be used. Too often, we fall trap to installing as many high tech, advanced electronics and shiny things in a room like this. The goal for us was to translate those two words differently...Game oom. We wanted whomever arrived into the space to feel a sense of peaceful energy. No TV will be found in this room. Mobile devices should be turned off. This is a space to take a step back from technology and enjoy precious moments with loved ones. A good conversation, a game of a backgammon or pool. A contemporary interpretation of an Etruscan drawing room is where we drew our inspiration. With a moody wall color, luxurious textiles and finishes incorporated into multiple inviting seating areas, the intention was to create a sanctuary for friends and family. This is a room where technology is set aside in exchange for human interaction...something we have all missed in recent months.

Guest Lounge & Gallery We wanted to infuse the “Mod-iterranean” feel of the home into our space with neutral elements, refinement, warmth and texture. or the gallery hallway, we accentuated the arch ceiling detail by finishing it in a beautiful greyish green hue to bring a moodier edge of class, sophistication and uniqueness. The wall sconces have a classic, modern feel to them, as they frame the gorgeous paint stroke artwork on either side of the hallway. We grounded the hallway with a vintage-inspired rug that brings the textures and tones together beautifully. For the guest lounge, we thought it would be unique to carry the arch character detail that is highlighted throughout the home into the space by creating a focal wall statement that frames the glass sideboard and television. This helps drive cohesion and a special unanticipated twist into the space. The cane detailing on the side chairs and the arching detail on the arms were subtle but intentional design decisions. We love how the furniture selections are refined yet inviting. The open black shelves bring airiness to the space with the incorporation of warm terracotta finishes from our Design Team’s Home D cor Shop Homes to Treasure.

Old World spaces are morphed to host our current culture, an electric and eclectic one. The Med Sea is beyond vast and encompasses many cultures. Luckily for us, Laurent sails off the southern coast of France, and the Pride in his home made us partial Our deepest desire for our space was to celebrate art, new and ancient—collaborating with artists who have rose-tinted our personal travels throughout the area. Victoria and Laurent discovered the radiance of Atlelier Martin Berger’s custom Marquety Wallpaper on a buying trip and got to experience the studio where he creates striated perfection. LA Artist Victor Wilde designed the Victor Vaserelly-inspired Optic Art bolster pillow on the bed, topping off the coziness of layered linens, reminiscent of bleached sheets strung above paved stone passages Coté Sud. He also enlivened our appreciation of the distinct vivid blue of the sea. The sale of his pop of childhood wonder will benefit Phoenix Children’s Hospital. Teddy is available on our website. Laundry Haven & Mud Room We wanted this laundry room and mud room to be functional yet fabulous! All laundry rooms deserve design love, no matter their size. Instead of treating this hardworking space as an afterthought, unique and vibrant materials were utilized to create a lively atmosphere. A bold color palette, an attention-grabbing textural wall surface and whimsical accents were the motivation behind the design of this space. This dog wash inspired our decor, as this laundry room doubles as a dog space with the beautifully tiled dog wash with luxe fixtures. Outside the laundry room, we did an artistic wall treatment with a stenciled message that reminds us to find oy and happiness in life. Our mud room was designed to have a place for everything as this family comes home from work, activities and shopping. Our decor expresses the comfort of home and family. Longevity is in the Water in These Communities in the World’s Blue Zones
By Dena Roché What do Ilkaria, Greece; Sardinia, Italy; Loma Linda, California; Okinawa, Japan and Nicoya, Costa Rica have in common? They are the five areas of the planet where a high portion of the population lives to 100 or more.

ubbed “The Blue Zones” by National Geographic researcher Dan Buettner, these places may hold the secret to longevity for the rest of us. Buettner, an adventure junkie who holds three Guinness World Records, stumbled upon the concept of Blue Zones when he owned a company that solved ancient mysteries. Fresh off exploring why the Mayan civilization collapsed, he decided to tackle finding the Fountain of Youth. The trail led to Okinawa, which held the longest life expectancy in the world. Intrigued by what he discovered, Buettner dispatched a team of researchers to parse population data to see if similar areas existed. They found four, and Buettner went off to investigate Blue Zones. One of his biggest discoveries was that satisfaction and happiness, which influence longevity, had nothing to do with money, status or possessions—it was all about simple things like a conversation with a friend, doing work by hand and enjoying simple food. “Being in a good, happy partnership lowers mortality by 50 percent,” Buettner said.
“
By far the most powerful thing you can do to live longer is to find the right partner and then pour your efforts into that relationship instead of fad diets and Crossfit.”
Another key factor to longevity is rooted in relationships with our community and friends. All Blue Zones have populations that have strong ties to a faith-based or spiritual community and a focus on socialization. Additionally, the minute the standard American diet becomes prevalent in a population, longevity

decreases. According to Buettner, our typical way of eating knocks six to eight years off our lives. Instead, Blue Zones use nutrition for longevity. Regardless of what plant-based food floats your fancy, the perfect nutrition pairing for longevity is with one or two glasses of wine. Most Blue Zone populations consume a moderate amount of wine daily. The culture within Blue Zones also has built-in stress busters. Okinawans take a few moments each day to remember their ancestors, Adventists pray, Ikarians take a nap and Sardinians do happy hour. Find what relaxes you, whether it’s yoga, meditation or a bubble bath. Now do more of it. “According to a Gallup survey, 70 percent of us don’t find our purpose in our jobs,” Buettner explained. “But now, many of us have a chance to reassess what we were doing if we lost a job. The economy will recover. Now is the time to determine what job does speak to your heart and could help you live your purpose.” Another epiphany Buettner had while studying the Blue Zones was that the people in these areas don’t have a better understanding of aging or more discipline than the rest of us—their culture and lifestyle simply promote wellness. A lifestyle that encourages longevity is one where we aren’t sitting in front of a computer eight hours a day, nor is it one where the only exercise we get is running on a treadmill at a gym. What people in the Blue Zones had in common was that their lives encouraged movement naturally, not with burning calories the primary goal. The more you can naturally add movement into your day, the better. Walk to your coffee shop, play with your kids, or go on a hike with a friend. While there is no literal Fountain of Youth, it just might exist after all if you embrace the Blue Zone lifestyle.

oderick Wyllie and his award-winning practice Surfacedesign create private gardens that cultivate a sense of connection to the built and natural world and push people to engage with the landscape in new ways. A strong connection to the natural environment enhances emotional well-being and alleviates feelings of social isolation, in addition to increasing cognitive performance and well-being. “People are really wanting to make sure that the garden is totally integrated with their living environment because they’re at home, and I don’t see that going away. It feels like the work environment might morph a little bit to allow people to be at home more, 128

which then means that things really need to be maximized,” Wyllie said. “Let’s say people are working two or three days a week at home. Well, those two or three days, being able to get out or have a phone conversation outside during that day is pretty important.” We strongly believe that people should look outside in order to reap the internal benefits. There are plenty of sources of inspiration for taking a leap into the realm of garden design. Why not start now?
