Many States Fall Short of White House Reopening Criteria

This story has been updated to correct the number of states that have not met White House Coronavirus Task Force guidelines. A previous version of the story counted states as not meeting the guidelines if they did not show fewer cases and a declining percentage of positive tests. The guidelines only require states to meet one of those criteria, not both. Around the U.S., states are debating whether and how to reopen their economies and lift social-distancing measures. But are they ready? Whether they are or not, many are moving ahead. President Donald Trump insisted on Tuesday that the country had to reopen its economy, even at the risk of more infections. “Will some people be affected? Yes. Will some people be affected badly? Yes. But we have to get our country open and we have to get it open soon,” Trump said. Last month, the White House Coronavirus Task Force laid out a series of “gating criteria” meant to guide states on lifting restrictions and getting back to normal. They include a decline in symptoms of the virus as monitored by local health networks, fewer cases or a declining percentage of positive tests, and hospitals systems that can handle the strain of the outbreak. Bloomberg News’s analysis found that 10 states that have lifted restrictions don’t meet the White House guidelines for reopening. Many are moving ahead anyway. For weeks, states have faced pressure to lift restrictions and get their economies running again, even at the risk of more illnesses. “The cure can’t be worse than the disease,” Trump tweeted on March 22, in apparent reference to the measures states have taken. In the weeks since, Trump has alternated between urging states to lift restrictions, chiding some who have moved to do so, and backing away from taking charge of the reopening. By mid-April, the president said 29 states would be able to reopen “relatively soon.” According to a Bloomberg

News analysis of state data, at least 19 states still fail to meet the White House’s criteria. In some 22 states, rates of infection are still rising. Testing is one of the core criteria for reopening agreed upon by the Trump administration and health experts, though some health experts have said the White House guidelines are too loose. The task force says that states should either have a 14-day downward trajectory of documented cases, or a 14-day downward trajectory of positive tests, as a percentage of total tests, so long as the volume of tests is flat or increasing. “You can have a downward slope and it’s meaningless,” George Rutherford, the head of infectious disease and global epidemiology at the University of California San Francisco, told Bloomberg News in April. With the “or” criteria, 19 states fail to meet the White House’s guidelines. If states had to meet both criteria, 39 would fail. The nation’s governors are effectively in charge of reopening efforts, and New York, California and other Democrat-governed states have been cautious about moving ahead. In Iowa, which is in the first phase of reopening, influenza-like illness symptoms and case counts grew. Like many other states, Iowa is seeing workers return to their jobs, even if they are worried about their health during an ongoing pandemic. South Dakota, which never implemented the harsh measures some other states did, has had a significant outbreak at a meat processing plant in Sioux Falls. In Texas, protesters called for reopening the state’s economy by mid-April, despite increasing case counts. Some Republican-run states have moved ahead quickly, including GOP strongholds like Texas, Alabama and Georgia. Texas’ reopening is focused on reducing occupancy to only 25% in non-essential businesses like retail stores, restaurants, movie theaters, malls, museums and libraries. The first phase of the state’s reopening, which includes statewide testing and contact tracing, will last until May 18. As states begin opening back up, local health authorities are watching for a potential surge in new infections. Some experts have warned that, because there are more cases “seeded” in the community, a second wave could be far worse than the first. “We have to have something in place that is efficient and that we can rely on, and we’re not there yet,” Fauci said in an interview with The Associated Press in mid-April. “I’ll guarantee you, once you start pulling back there will be infections.”

WHAT IS CORONAVIRUS? Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is an infectious disease caused by a newly discovered coronavirus. Most people infected with the COVID-19 virus will experience mild to moderate respiratory illness and recover without requiring special treatment. Older people, and those with underlying medical problems like cardiovascular disease, diabetes, chronic respiratory disease, and cancer are more likely to develop serious illness. The best way to prevent and slow down transmission is be well informed about the COVID-19 virus, the disease it causes and how it spreads. Protect yourself and others from infection by washing your hands or using an alcohol based rub frequently and not touching your face. The COVID-19 virus spreads primarily through droplets of saliva or discharge from the nose when an infected person coughs or sneezes, so it’s important that you also practice respiratory etiquette (for example, by coughing into a flexed elbow). At this time, there are no specific vaccines or treatments for COVID-19. However, there are many ongoing clinical trials evaluating potential treatments. WHO will continue to provide updated information as soon as clinical findings become available. Stay informed:

Protecting yourself and others from the spread COVID-19 You can reduce your chances of being infected or spreading COVID-19 by taking some simple precautions: Regularly and thoroughly clean your hands with an alcohol-based hand rub or wash them with soap and water. Why? Washing your hands with soap and water or using alcohol-based hand rub kills viruses that may be on your hands. Maintain at least 1 metre (3 feet) distance between yourself and others. Why? When someone coughs, sneezes, or speaks they spray small liquid droplets from their nose or mouth which may contain virus. If you are too close, you can breathe in the droplets, including the COVID-19 virus if the person has the disease. Avoid going to crowded places. Why? Where people come together in crowds, you are more likely to come into close contact with someone that has COIVD-19 and it is more difficult to maintain physical distance of 1 metre (3 feet). Avoid touching eyes, nose and mouth. Why? Hands touch many surfaces and can pick up viruses. Once contaminated, hands can transfer the virus to your eyes, nose or mouth. From there, the virus can enter your body and infect you. Make sure you, and the people around you, follow good respiratory hygiene. This means covering your mouth and nose with your bent elbow or tissue when you cough or sneeze. Then dispose of the used tissue immediately and wash your hands. Why? Droplets spread virus. By following good respiratory hygiene, you protect the people around you from viruses such as cold, flu and COVID-19. Stay home and self-isolate even with minor symptoms such as cough, head-

ache, mild fever, until you recover. Have someone bring you supplies. If you need to leave your house, wear a mask to avoid infecting others. Why? Avoiding contact with others will protect them from possible COVID-19 and other viruses. If you have a fever, cough and difficulty breathing, seek medical attention, but call by telephone in advance if possible and follow the directions of your local health authority. Why? National and local authorities will have the most up to date information on the situation in your area. Calling in advance will allow your health care provider to quickly direct you to the right health facility. This will also protect you and help prevent spread of viruses and other infections. Keep up to date on the latest information from trusted sources, such as WHO or your local and national health authorities. Why? Local and national authorities are best placed to advise on what people in your area should be doing to protect themselves.

Advice on the safe use of alcohol-based hand sanitizers To protect yourself and others against COVID-19, clean your hands frequently and thoroughly. Use alcohol-based hand sanitizer or wash your hands with soap and water. If you use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer, make sure you use and store it carefully. Keep alcohol-based hand sanitizers out of children’s reach. Teach them how to apply the sanitizer and monitor its use. Apply a coin-sized amount on your hands. There is no need to use a large amount of the product. Avoid touching your eyes, mouth and nose immediately after using an alcohol-based hand sanitizer, as it can cause irritation.

Hand sanitizers recommended to protect against COVID-19 are alcohol-based and therefore can be flammable. Do not use before handling fire or cooking. Under no circumstance, drink or let children swallow an alcohol-based hand sanitizer. It can be poisonous. Remember that washing your hands with soap and water is also effective against COVID-19.

Protect yourself and others from getting sick

Spring 1978 in West Baltimore, 10 year old me started walking back home after watching the baseball game over in the Ellamont Road Alley. I didn’t play, I cheered from the sidelines, this is not my sport at all! Give me football!! The neighborhood was up with the usual Saturday afternoon sounds, buzzing vacuum cleaners, pots and pans clinking, parents fussing at their kids to get their chores done or, “no outside” for them, and the staple, the constant, the go-to for keeping us moving while getting the chores done, Music. Music pouring through windows; funk, gospel, old standards. There goes Chrissy singing to A Star is Born, again. She had me practicing with her most of last week. A DJ spoke his intro to this new artist, “Prince, with Soft and Wet”. What the hell is soft and wet but bread when you’re making French toast, yuck. I heard a sigh, a faint breath exhaled?; did he say “Hi”?! This was a whole different sound coming from the instruments and that voice, high and cute, 10 year old girl cute. All of it drew me in and held me. Hold up, I slowed down to listen for the houses that were playing the new song by Prince. Man it was coming from almost every direction. The only prince I knew of was Prince Valiant. “Hey, lover, sugar don’t you see? There’s so many things that you do to me,” Hey, Okay he kept my attention. I didn’t see but I was intrigued; I bent the corner to my block and Prince was still singing and I started dancing, see, this was tight, and round at times in just the right places and his sighs, gasp and swoon, clutching my pearls! This was right up my alley, pun intended! I am strutting up the first two flights of steps outside my building, stop and dance on the landing, which is also my stage, where my friends and I make up dances and have singing contests, all those things. I glanced up and over to my right to see if Greg was on his balcony, nope, not there; he’s cute like this song. I dance up the next flight, through the 2 doors and up the last two mini flights of stairs to our apartment. I had not heard anything like this before. Now, know this too, I was into the bands playing funk, northern soul crooners, TSOP, disco, soft rock, so this was fun, refreshing, just like the breeze blowing outside, pollen filled and all, like the birds singing and it was funky-quirky too! Prince. Soft and Wet, huh? I liked what he’s saying, ooooooo, I shouldn’t have, should I? I got my recorder and my cassette tapes out, camped them in front of my radio and waited to hear it again. It didn’t matter if it took the rest of the day and night! I had to listen to it some more. My 14#PRN first eargasm...Rest In Melodies and Rhythms -Lisa Brooks

One of The Largest Black-Owned Airlines Is Being Run By A Savvy 29 Year-Old BLACK Woman

You may not have known that there are black-owned airlines, but guess again. Sherrexcia ‘Rexy’ Rolle is the Vice President of Operations and General Counsel for Western Air, a Bahamas-based black-owned aviation business. Although the company was founded by her parents Rex and Shandrice Rolle, Rexy has led the charge in expanding her family’s privately-owned business which has been in existence for approximately two decades. With a net worth of $90+ million, Western Airlines has been steadily increasing its routes across the Caribbean, including direct flights to Haiti, Cuba, Jamaica and soon Florida. In this interview, Rexy describes how Western Air came to be and shares advice on how to make it in the aviation industry as a person of color. Let’s get into the history of Western Air. What prompted your family to delve into the business of aviation? Rexy: My parents were very young and just started out their lives when they had me. My mom was 17 and my Dad was 18, just beginning his career as a pilot. We are from a small town called Mastic Point, Andros in the Bahamas. My father started his career in the aviation industry as a private pilot by trade, however, owning his own airlines and developing it in the Bahamas was a lifelong dream of his. My parents worked tirelessly and persevered in developing this business by saving their money and doing their research with various

aircraft brokers. My parents were eventually fortunate enough through faith, their persistence and dedication in their business plan to [receive offers] from two aviation investors from the U.S. From that moment moving forward, Western Air Limited was a dream that is now a reality.

Developing an airline is a lucrative but very competitive industry. What were the market gaps that your family wanted to bridge when developing Western Air Ltd.? Rexy: With any business, it is all about knowing your industry and what particular problem you are solving for the consumer. In the Bahamas, there are over 700 islands and many Bahamians usually take small charter ferries as transportation to the other islands. Even though we have a very efficient government airline in the Bahamas, there were certain islands that were not being targeted for our consumers to have a convenient way to travel. This is where our airline comes in and once we recognized those gaps in the market, we were able to convince our investors why our airline is needed. I understand in the business of aviation there are little to no minorities who are either owners or have senior level positions. What are some of the challenges that you and your family face in this industry and how do you all overcome those challenges in maintaining the brand and taking Western Air Ltd. to the next level? Rexy: Every day we have our challenges, just like any other company. Being the largest privately-owned airline company in the Bahamas, as a family, we have an understanding that we must maintain our focus on our mission. We understand we have to work 10 times harder and we don’t shy away from the challenge. Moreover, as the Vice President of Operations and General Counsel, the number one thing I stressed for our company is consistency.

In the beginning, we had our issues in time management and delays. However, in this industry where timing is very crucial, we began to focus on the reasons why these things were happening and “sweating the small stuff ” in ensuring that our customers arrive at their destinations in a safe and timely fashion. Once my team and I began fine-tuning arrival and departure times, our performance began to improve. Our ticket sales increased also. From that first initial step, we are continuing a hands-on approach on our customer service by making sure people get there safely, on time and most importantly with their luggage intact. Presently, as we are speaking, I am sitting in my office looking at schedules and flights that are departing and arriving. Just like the old saying goes, “Timing is everything.” Western Air Ltd. is continuing to grow every year. What are some ideas for expansion that you have in mind? Rexy: As an urban millennial woman, I know that it is important for us to increase our online and social media presence. My parents did a great job with grassroots marketing through word of mouth in the Bahamas but now it is time to increase our awareness and promote our services internationally. Presently, there are various women specifically Black woman that hold senior-level positions in Top 500 companies, however, since the #metoo campaign, many women have come forward with sexual harassment claims from men in the workplace. Have you ever been in a position in which you were either discriminated against based on your age, race and gender? If so, how do you handle those challenges in an industry where men dominate the aviation industry? Rexy: In these cases, like most women, we have our intuition and what I learned is that we must follow it. The minute I sense a meeting has turned beyond the level of business, I shut it down immediately. I learned that if you want people to take you seriously, especially in this industry where I have to constantly negotiate claims and deal with serious regulations, you must be confident in what you know and only do business with people who are focused on the mission in sealing the deal. Anyone that has approached me in any other manner allowed me to know that I would not be doing business with them. I had to know within myself I will be successful without them and there is always alternatives. As

advice to other women who are working in corporate or not, you should not tolerate anything that will degrade you of your womanhood and character. Everything will work out and you should never adhere to sexual harassment or misconduct in the workspace. Those that do that are threatened by your confidence and intelligence.

What is some advice that you would give women that are interested in the aviation industry? Rexy: Be confident in what you know and I say that over again. One of our downfalls as women is that we leave it at the door, — we must stay CONFIDENT in what we know and the work we produce. We as women were groomed from schooling and professionally to always second guess our decisions and feel as if we are “under-qualified.” I learned from experience to know your industry very well because the odds are immediately against you due to gender and race. In the aviation industry, you should know its a highly regulated industry as it should be, but it’s also incredibly broad with various work opportunities that are not commonly known. In my role, I have to ensure operations comply with not only our company policies and standards but to all relevant laws and regulations. Understanding your market and clientele — the customers ALWAYS come first! What we take pride in at Western Air Ltd. is our customer service. This is exactly what sets us apart from our competition. Our customers are family and we treat family members with pride and the utmost respect. In building your capital, be sure you do your research to ensure your aviation and finance partners or investors understand your vision and what it will require. Trust your staff, partners, and most importantly YOURSELF. - baucemag.com

BABYFACE AND TEDDY RILEY’S BOTCHED INSTAGRAM LIVE BATTLE PROVES LESS IS MORE Despite the technical issues, the fun of the night was in all the jokes that eased the tension. Last night (April 18th), the battle of all Verzuz battles between legendary music writers/producers, Teddy Riley and Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds, hit a major digital pothole and couldn’t recover for the over 400k viewers in attendance on Instagram Live. Mega producers Swizz Beatz and Timbaland — who are the founders of the battle platform and have showcased many of these events since the quarantine started — hyped this long-awaited match up for weeks. Their disappointment in the face-off being barraged with sound issues was felt through their IG Live post-talk. “Teddy Riley was doing too much, “ Swizz lamented and to what Timbaland agreed. What those two are referring to is the frontman for ‘80s and ‘90s R&B groups Guy and Blackstreet (respectively) Teddy Riley who showed up on his own IG Live with a full stage set up. He had a keyboard, a DJ, what looked like a drummer in the cut and a hypeman dancing a la Flavor Flav style. It was a lot to witness as he warmed up the sound, which was fine before Babyface finally showed up on the split-screen. Just moments 34

before Face appeared, the followers for the event quickly climbed to 300k in less than 8 minutes. Babyface’s lag time in showing up prompted some of the commenters, which was super star-studded, to say things like, “He’s still picking out his wardrobe,” to “I think ‘Face is scared, he’s not gonna show.” All of which was nonsense, as the flow of followers made it hard for Riley’s team to catch Face’s request to join. So for about 15 minutes, there was the anxiety of weeks of talk by the promoters and days of posting by T.R. and Face falling on this moment. The pressure to deliver was on. Black Twitter was seasoning the session as a true date night and hangout spot all day. Even going so far as to shower, shave, do hair and get “a good outfit” and some drinks on deck for the festivities. Once the pleasantries were out of the way, there was Face, solo in a studio with a black blazer (what was that, velvet?) a white button-up and a smooth setting with a mixing board behind him. Riley, on the other hand, had what is now known as a full production team (and like his live performance a few weeks ago from his home studio, there was no social distancing being practiced) and once he kicked off his tunes (Face made him go first, which no one wants to do in these battles, “Seniority wins,” said Face) it was doomed from the start. Riley’s multiple mics and crowded space made for garbled and more so echoed tunes and took the punch away from his valued opener, “The Show” by Doug E. Fresh and the Get Fresh Crew. He literally performed the ‘80s classic summer hip-hop hit like he was at the Apollo Theater in Harlem. His hype man was amped, but the viewing audience wasn’t feeling it. Face was polite and even tipped his respect to the track, but then followed like the casanova crooner he is and toasted his champagne flute to the ladies in attendance and pressed play on his crisp sounding system and let the wailing intro of “Two Occasions,” by his group with his producing partner/iconic music executive L.A. Reid, wash over the crowd. Just from resetting the tone from uptempo hip-hop to a classic slow-jam, let us know we were in for a long night of Face controlling the mood. Most felt that the echo issue that Riley was having would sort its self out or would be handled by one of his many staffers on set, but it only got worse as Riley responded in the second round with the all-world dance theme, “Groove Me,” by Guy. The deep synth groove is a surefire party starter, but the echo and his live-action performance were lost in a sea of comments that scrolled up the screen like, “What are you doing... Why do you have a hypeman...Stop and fix the sound, Teddy...What in the hell...” And that was the nice stuff. With an emphatic James Brown-like arm drop to stop the band, Riley finished the jam and knew he just sent Face a hard shot to the body. Face, ever the chilly willy, kind of chuckled and commented about how he first heard the song and liked it. He mentioned going into his list of artists to choose from for his next selection and talked about how they both worked with him to great success, then dropped the hammer with Bobby Brown’s “Don’t Be Cruel.” Ouch. It was clean, pumping and felt like an early dagger that would only plunge deeper if he was using it this early in the match. A little light banter was kicked as they both gave anecdotes about the times surrounding those songs and it almost seemed like a stalling tactic for Riley as his team knew something was wrong, but seemed to not be checking the stream of “FIX THE SOUND...you are echoing,” chants in the comments. They toyed a bit but went on into a good mid-range gem by Riley in “I Like The Way (The Kissing Game),” by Texas quintet HiFive. Still beset with echo issues, right after the tune ends (a bit prematurely at that, as Face was playing his songs for two minutes or more) the talk about tech issues starts to get more robust. Face is cool with giving Riley time to figure it out, yet goes into another strong single with Bobby Brown and “Every Little Step.” Again, it felt like another crystal clear banger that Riley wouldn’t be able to match sound or energy-wise. And that’s saying a lot as Riley has his own huge Bobby Brown hit to launch, but with the echo, it probably wouldn’t work. VIBE.COM

THE ANSWER TO ENDING SCHOOL VIOLENCE THE ANSWER TO ENDING SCHOOL SHOOTINGS With the increasing school shootings coupled with fatalities, there has been increasing talk of the need for gun control. At the time of this article, the United States has reached a count of 23 reported school shootings for 2018 with the last one reported for May 25, 2018 in Noblesville, Indiana at Noblesville West Middle School. As our society searches for an answer to ending these tragedies (and whether gun control is the answer), it’s important to look at when these occurrences began. The infamous Columbine shootings of 1999 have been credited with influencing subsequent school shootings. However, the massacre that inspired the making of movies as well as songs about one of the victims, Cassie Bernall, was not the first school shooting or school massacre. The New York Times probably reported the first campus massacre that took place on August 1, 1966 in AUSTIN, Texas. A 25-year-old engineering student, Charles Whitman, carried an arsenal of weapons to the top of the 27-story tower on the University of Texas campus and shot 12 people to death and wounded approximately 33 others before the police killed him. He was stated to be an ex-Marine. It might be of some significance to know that he left notes after he murdered his mother and wife (one with each of their bodies). These murders preceded his massacre on the college campus. These notes indicated he had questions about his mental state. A quote of interest from those letters is, “I imagine it appears that I brutally killed both of my loved ones. I was only trying to do a quick thorough job...If my life insurance policy is valid please pay off my debts...donate the rest anonymously to a mental health foundation. Maybe research can prevent further tragedies of this type...” He requested that an autopsy be performed on his body after his death for any abnormalities. Findings also show that there was a report of a massacre that took place in 1976. The California State University, Fullerton massacre resulted in seven deaths and two injuries. Most people may not realize that the United States has a long history of reported school shootings dating back to the 1800s and the occurrences weren’t so infrequent as some might think. Some incidents resulted in deaths, while some only resulted in injuries. In other cases, there were no tragedies. It’s interesting to note that with recent discussions regarding arming teachers or other school officials, some of the murders in early history were committed by school personnel. One such example took place on February 6, 1864. The Ashland Times reported that George W. Longfelt, the school teacher of the Pyfer’s School House, near Ashland County in Ohio, shot and killed a student, Alfred Desem, at the school house and escaped. At the time of the report there was no information given for the cause of the murder. There have been reported cases of self-defense claims by school officials. The Los Angeles Herald reported an account that took place on September 11, 1909 in Gravette, Arkansas, at the edge of McDonald County, Missouri. A. T. Kelly reportedly killed his student, John Bufram, at Bear Hollow School. Claims were made that Butram announced that school would not be in session that day to other students, but Kelly insisted that school would continue as usual. During the discussion Butram pulled a knife and reportedly injured two teachers; Kelly shot him. Kelly surrendered to authorities. Another self-defense incident took place in 1918 at a dormitory in Jefferson City, MO. However, this tragedy took place between two school officials who were arguing over which dishes to use for a social (see The Kansas City Sun, Volume 10, Number 32).

Some children have always managed to have access to a gun. There are repeated cases in early history where students were playing with a gun and it accidently fired or another student purposely brought a gun to school and murdered another because they were arguing over a girl. Bullying has also been the cause for school shootings. The Richmond, Virginia Daily Dispatch reported that on January 21, 1860, a son of Colonel Elijah Sebree, of Todd County, Kentucky, was killed by another student at a school house in Trenton, TN. Some boys made another student believe that son Sebree was threatening him and intended to kill him; it was a joke. However, the other student didn’t know it was a joke. This day the assumed victimized student took possession of a gun, walked up to Sebree in the schoolhouse and shot him. It’s been stated that the Columbine shootings redefined the actions that took place April 20, 1999 as more than a statement of revenge. It was stated to be a means of protest for bullying, intimidation, social isolation, and public rituals of humiliation. Perhaps perpetrators in subsequent school shootings romanticized the 1999 mission. Findings show that the school shootings that occur today due to tempers, accidents, mental illness, revenge, and other reasons known and unknown, are a repeat of what has occurred for centuries. Perhaps Columbine has just brought all 21st century school shootings to the forefront regardless of the weight of their tragedies because of our increase in knowledge—more media, internet, and smart phones. With all this knowledge we are still divided on the answer to ending the school tragedies. Researched and written by: Charlotte R. Beard Writing Services by Char

ANGELA DAVIS

she studied philosophy with Herbert Marcuse. As a graduate student at the University of California, San Diego, in the late 1960s, she joined several groups, including the Black Panthers. But she spent most of her time working with the Che-Lumumba Club, which was all-black branch of the Communist Party. Hired to teach at the University of California, Los Angeles, Angela Davis ran into trouble with the school’s administration because of her association with communism. They fired her, but she fought them in court and got her job back. Davis still ended up leaving when her contract expired in 1970.

Educator and activist Angela Davis (1944-) became known for her involvement in a politically charged murder case in the early 1970s. Influenced by her segregated upbringing in Birmingham, Alabama, Davis joined the Black Panthers and an all-black branch of the Communist Party as a young woman. She became a professor at UCLA, but fell out of favor with the administration due to her ties. Davis was charged with aiding the botched escape attempt of imprisoned black radical George Jackson, and served roughly 18 months in jail before her acquittal in 1972. After spending time traveling and lecturing, Davis returned to the classroom as a professor and authored several books. ANGELA DAVIS: EARLY LIFE AND EDUCATION Angela Yvonne Davis is best known as a radical African American educator and activist for civil rights and other social issues. She was born on January 26, 1944, in Birmingham, Alabama to Sallye and Frank Davis, an elementary school teacher and the owner of a service station, respectively. Davis knew about racial prejudice from a young age; her neighborhood in Birmingham was nicknamed “Dynamite Hill” for the number of homes targeted by the Ku Klux Klan. As a teenager, Davis organized interracial study groups, which were broken up by the police. She also knew several of the young African American girls killed in the Birmingham church bombing of 1963. Angela Davis later moved north and went to Brandeis University in Massachusetts where

ANGELA DAVIS AND THE SOLEDAD BROTHERS Outside of academia, Angela Davis had become a strong supporter of three prison inmates of Soledad Prison known as the Soledad brothers (they were not related). These three men—John W. Cluchette, Fleeta Drumgo, and George Lester Jackson—were accused of killing a prison guard after several African American inmates had been killed in a fight by another guard. Some thought these prisoners were being used as scapegoats because of the political work within the prison. During Jackson’s trial in August 1970, an escape attempt was made when Jackson’s brother Jonathan entered the courtroom to claim hostages he could exchange for his brother. Jonathan Jackson, Superior Court Judge Harold Haley, and two inmates were killed in the ensuing shoot-out. Angela Davis was brought up on several charges for her alleged part in the event, including murder. She went into hiding and was one of the FBI’s “Most Wanted” before being caught two months later. There were two main pieces of evidence used at trial: the guns used were registered to her, and she was reportedly in love with Jackson. Her case drew the attention of the international press and after spending roughly 18 months in jail, Davis was acquitted in June 1972. Angela Davis Books After spending time traveling and lecturing, Angela Davis returned to teaching. Today, she is a professor at the University of California, Santa Cruz, where she teaches courses on the history of consciousness. Davis is the author of several books, including Women, Race, and Class (1980), Blues Legacies and Black Feminism: Gertrude Ma Rainey, Bessie Smith, and Billie Holiday (1999), Are Prisons Obsolete? (2003), Abolition Democracy: Beyond Empire, Prisons, and Torture (2005), The Meaning of Freedom: And Other Difficult Dialogues (2012) and Freedom Is a Constant Struggle: Ferguson, Palestine, and the Foundations of a Movement (2016).

SWIMSUIT SEASON IS HERE!

Swimsuit season is here and I’m just a little bit excited about it. I have NEVER been excited about swimsuits as much as I am this season……. WHY??? Because there is SO MUCH out there right now that I LOVE! I have a lot coming your way that COVER and are CUTE and that YOU should be EXCITED about too! THIS one and here, are from JCrew. I spotted it a couple of weeks ago and LOVED the covered top, and of course the colorful stripes! The bottoms come to my waist, but remember I’m very short waisted. These will not come up quite as high for a more normal sized girl. STILL CUTE though! The back scoops out so there is some skin, but it’s in the back and not the front, which I like that! It comes with a top, but I would never wear it so I didn’t get. The top I’m wearing here, doesn’t have a bra in it, so you’re best bet I think is to wear something like this with it! JCrew has some ADORABLE stuff right now. I have this one coming but am going to send the top back because it just doesn’t cover as much as I want. It would look great on a flatter chested girl!

Swimsuit shopping can be SO STRESSFUL! EVERY girl I think feels the same! My favorite coverup for swim attire are cut-off denim shorts! I just think they are easy, not fussy, and great for a boat! I love this suit and the punchy floral with the cut-off denim! Below are some cute denim options.

LimeRicki is another brand that I’ve worn a lot of. Their line this season IS SO DANG CUTE too! They have a lot of that new rusty brown color I’ve been loving recently! Take a LOOK! I’ve got a whole collection of this brand that I’ll be posting in the coming weeks! And it’s extremely modest! Coverups are just as important too!! THIS ONE is so playful and fun! I’ve linked some super cute ones below. I hardly ever just wear my suit around…. I must be covered up, so I pay a lot of attention in this department! Are you confident enough to wear your swimsuit just around and about??? Eeeeeeek….. not me! CHICOVER50.COM

Forget Blue Whale Challenge, cyber bullying is more common danger for your kid Tanya grew up in a Mumbai suburb, like any normal teenager. Unknown to her, a classmate from a previous school had started collecting information and pictures of her since they were 12. The information was then used to make a fake Facebook page, and was shown as if Tanya had posted them herself. Tanya had read about cyber bullying, but had never expected herself to be a victim. She found out about the fake page only through her friends. Even though the bullying seemed benign in the beginning, soon schoolmates started sending her crude messages and she became isolated from her friends circle. She withdrew to herself, rarely going out, and became depressed. The bullying then got so bad that she had to go for counseling and change schools to start afresh. Having grown up around gadgets, children rely heavily on them to carry out everyday tasks. They also form their social persona around social media and depend on thes .. In an Ipsos survey in 2014, India topped the list of 254 countries for cyber bullying. 32% of parents surveyed in India said their children experienced cyber bullying, followed by Brazil (20%), Saudi Arabia (18%), Canada (18%) and the United States (15%). Parents in India also reported the greatest intensity of cyber bullying. 13% said a child in their home experiences cyber bullying on a regular basis, followed by 10% in Brazil, 5% in the United States and 5% in Argentina. The frequency of cyber bullying in India was found to be higher than in the U.S. (15% of children), U.K. (11% of children) and France (5% of children). According to a Microsoft study of online bullying among youth 8-17 years old, children in India reported the third highest online bullying rate among the 25 countries surveyed. Presidential candidate Joe Biden has demanded justice over the killing of an unarmed black man in the US state of Georgia. Mr Biden said his heart went out to the family of Ahmaud Arbery. Mr Arbery, 25, was jogging in February when confronted by an ex-policeman and his son. Video purported to show the shooting emerged online on Tuesday. A district attorney in Georgia has now ruled that a grand jury should decide whether charges should be brought. An earlier decision by a prosecutor in the Brunswick jurisdiction argued there was no probable cause to arrest Gregory McMichael, 64, and his son Travis, 34. More than 100 people took part in a protest in Brunswick on Tuesday night, demanding justice for Mr Arbery.

Trump contradicts nurse in testy Oval Office exchange over coronavirus protective gear

A nurse found out Wednesday what happens when you contradict President Donald Trump on how well coronavirus response efforts are going while standing near him in the Oval Office. Trump clapped back at that nurse, Sophia Thomas, who said that access to sufficient supplies of personal protective equipment “has been sporadic.” Her comments came during a National Nurses Day event at the White House meant to honor those first responders. Trump upon hearing a less-than-glowing description of the front lines, quickly shot back, “Sporadic for you, but not sporadic for a lot of other people.” The exchange underscored how sensitive Trump has been to suggestions that the United States has lagged in preparedness for the coronavirus outbreak under his watch. Thomas, who is president of the American Association of Nurse Practitioners, had told reporters in the Oval Office that there are “certainly pockets of areas where PPE is not ideal but this is an unprecedented time.” “I’ve been reusing my N95 masks for a few weeks now,” she said. “PPE has been sporadic but it’s been manageable, and we do what we have to do, we’re nurses,” said Thomas, who works at the Daughters of Charity Health System in New Orleans. “And we learn to adapt and do whatever the best thing we can do for our patients to get the job done and get the care provided, and that’s what we’re going to continue to do as Covid-19 continues.” After Trump’s testy response, Thomas said, “Oh, no, I agree Mr. President.” But Trump continued, folding his arms, “Because I’ve heard the opposite.” “I’ve heard that they are loaded up with gowns now.” “And initially we had nothing, we had empty cupboards, we had empty shelves, we had nothing, because it wasn’t put there by the last administration,” he said, referring to former President Barack Obama. Trump then noted that he had traveled to a Honeywell factory in Phoenix a day earlier, to tour a production line that is making “millions of masks a month.” “We have other factories being built now for masks, and for the most part I mean, that was fine,” Trump said, referring to the nurse. ’“But I’ve heard that we have tremendous supply to almost all places,” he said. “Tremendous supply.”

Restore and look good: What to pack for your winter getaway

(BPT) - It’s officially that time of year when everyone is stressed out, exhausted and overall in desperate need of some R&R. Whether your idea of restoration involves tearing up the ski slopes or drinking wine by a roaring fireplace, now is the time to prep and plan your exciting winter getaway! Where you go is ultimately up to you, but we’re here to help with your packing list. Preparation is key, because packing is stressful - especially during the chaotic holiday season. Packing in advance and consolidating your luggage will make for a more enjoyable (and relaxing) travel experience. Follow these simple packing tips to help you feel organized and prepared as you venture off to find rest and relaxation! Choose the right luggage The less baggage you have, the less stressful your travel will be. Carefully select what is necessary and try to fit it into a carry-on if you’re flying, because baggage claim during the holidays isn’t the most relaxing place to be. A great hack is to roll up your clothing, instead of folding it, to maximize luggage space. The key to great packing is remembering to utilize all the space. Remember your skin Skin is especially dry in the cold weather, so moisturization and protection are key. Don’t let dark winter days fool you into thinking you don’t need SPF. The sun’s harmful rays go through clouds and can damage skin (especially the face), even when it’s overcast. Save room in your toiletry bag by packing a two-in-one moisturizer and sunscreen that is not only travel-friendly but moisturizes and protects. With the help of Neoglucosamine, Neutrogena Bright Boost Moisturizer with SPF 30 will rejuvenate dull winter skin by nourishing it with powerful antioxidants, Moringa Seed Oil and Vitamins C & E. Lightweight and sheer, this moisturizer protects skin against dry winter weather and the sun with broad spectrum SPF 30, while visibly improving tone, texture and brightness. Pack light and layer up! It’s cold, and probably snowing, so it’s tempting to reach for your heavy-duty gear when planning a cold-weather wardrobe. But bringing lots of lighter items is usually the smarter choice. Not only can you still create that cozy feeling by layering up, but you’ll have more options to mix and match outfits so you can stay fashionable and style your look based on your mood. Our tip: limit your color palette and it will make styling simple!
