Panama City Beach is twenty-seven miles of stunning white sand, emerald green waters, and surefire enjoyment. But just how did our little slice of heaven come to be? Read on for the exciting history of Panama City Beach! The copious amounts of fish in the Gulf of Mexico attracted many to settle in the St. Andrews Bay area in the 1800s. Before that, Native Americans made the area their home and, later, pirates found the abundant waters of the bay to be a prime spot to troll. Here, they would wait for the opportunity to capture and plunder the richly laden ships en route to Mexico or Spain. An old Spanish galleon and a 700-pound cannon were recovered from a motel site in the early ’60s, proving the presence of such pirates. Legend has it that pirates hoarded treasure at Spanish Shanty Point on Shell Island, just off the Panama City Beach shore. With a reputation for being the Wreck Capital of the World, many a diver is attracted to search for lost treasure beneath the waves. Who knows what treasures lie in the emerald waters of the bay!

Unfortunately, the Hang Out was destroyed by Hurricane Eloise in 1975—a sad moment in Florida history, but not one to set back Panama City Beach! Today, vacationers travel from all over the world to experience the fun-loving culture of Panama City Beach. It is a place where families vacation year after year, newlyweds honeymoon, and friends gather for reunions. Formerly a military reservation, the park has over one and a half miles of beaches on the Gulf of Mexico and Grand Lagoon. But to add some action to your trip, Frank Brown Park is a one-stop destination for fun on the run. This 200-acre recreational area caters to most active interests—with amenities too numerous to list. Play tennis with your sweetie on one of four courts, take the dog for a walk at the dedicated dog park, or treat the family to some splash time at the $4.1 million aquatic center.

And that’s just for starters. You can also take advantage of the kids’ fishing pond, two outdoor basketball courts, the indoor gym, half a dozen picnic pavilions, the stateof-the-art playground, four batting cages, nine baseball fields, three full-size soccer fields, and the 1.25-mile paved walking trail. Beautiful walking paths are also for use at Frank Brown Park as part of Gayle’s Trails. In the future, these paths will create an unbroken trail from the Walton County line to St. Andrews State Park. With so much to do, visitors can easily spend a full day at the park and not experience everything it has to offer. And it just keeps growing. Miracle Strip at pier park iS a Step back to a tiMe when faMilieS and friendS gathered for fun. The original Miracle Strip Amusement Park, a much-loved part of Panama City Beach for many years, closed in 2004. In 2010, the original painted pony carousel was discovered in storage, taken to Pier Park, and given a new life. The park soon added the Balloon Race and the Red Baron Ride, and, after much searching, the same make and model Big Eli Ferris wheel was found in California. All rides were refurbished and brought back to their original vintage gloryâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;Miracle Strip at Pier Park was born.

iracle Strip at Pier Park has something for everyone, from exciting rides to a quaint parklike atmosphere. You will find yourself enjoying the gorgeous flowers spilling down from hanging baskets and flower boxes as you wander through the park and create new memories with your family. There are more than four hundred butterflies, though the number can rise to six hundred, and all are native to Florida. Because these are not “exotic” butterflies from a foreign country, they are allowed to mate and reproduce. Garden inhabitants include monarchs, zebra longwings (the state butterfly), buckeyes, julias, great southern whites, giant swallowtails, spicebush swallowtails, and zebra swallowtails. Plants in the pavilion include lip-smacking varieties butterfly caterpillars love to eat after they emerge from eggs, like passion vines and milk vines. Multicolored flowers dot the interior space, giving the butterflies plenty of sweet nectar once they emerge from their cocoons, or chrysalides. Learning the butterfly’s life cycle, from egg to chrysalis, is made easy and fun for kids as they see for themselves nature’s wonder. Observing the butterflies sipping from flowers, basking in the sunshine, and flying freely in their natural habitat is truly a magical experience. If you sit quietly in the Pavilion, one may land on your shoulder to greet you.

After its decommission in 1967, this Navy minesweeper was sunk and refloated several times for training by the Navy’s salvage diver school before being sunk in its final resting place in 1987 by the Naval Diving and Salvage Training Center at Panama City. The ship is about 184 feet in length, has a 33-foot beam, and the profile rises to within 45 feet of the surface.

Accokeek is a fully intact 143-foot Navy tug boat in 110 feet of water—the wheelhouse is at 65 feet. A large goliath grouper has been known to loiter at the bow and wheelhouse.

Built in 1887, the Tarpon sank in 1937 and is one of Panama City Beach’s natural shipwrecks. The 130foot steamer lies in 95 feet of water approximately nine miles southwest of the St. Andrews jetties and has been popular for fishing since the 1950s. In 1997, the Tarpon was named Florida’s sixth underwater archaeological preserve, which makes removal of artifacts from the site unlawful. Divers are likely to spot amberjack, angelfish, flounder, grouper, moray eels, remoras, spadefish, and spiny and slipper lobster.

2. Black Bart Named in memory of Captain Charles Bartholomew, the Navy’s Supervisor of Salvage in Panama City for years and an avid local sport diver, the former 185foot oil field supply ship is the most popular dive site in Panama City Beach. Intentionally sunk in the early 1990s, the ship rests in about 75 feet of water with its cargo holds open for exploration. The fully intact ship’s bridge can be reached at a depth of 45 feet; the main deck is at 70 feet. The site is teeming with marine life.

3. Red Sea Intentionally sunk in 2009, the 120-foot freighter sits upright in 75 feet of water but reaches to just 40 feet below the surface. Though the Red Sea is Panama City Beach’s newest artificial dive spot, it is already home to many reef fish. With several decks and numerous swim-throughs, she is both fun and safe to explore.

5. USS Chippewa An outstanding dive spot, the former Navy tug sits upright and in excellent condition with most of its deck equipment intact. The cabin is at 50 feet and the main deck at 70 feet. The Chippewa is one of the largest ships ever used by the Bay County Artificial Reef Program.

6. SS Benjamin H. Grierson The Benjamin H. Grierson is a World War II Liberty ship built in 1943 and, following the war, was mothballed to the Mobile Reserve Fleet near Mobile, Alabama. It was then acquired by the Florida Department of Natural Resources in 1977 to be deployed as an artificial reef. At 441 feet in length with a 57-foot beam, the Grierson lies at a depth of 77 feet and rises 20 feet off the sea bottom.

7. Stage I A former Navy platform, Stage I covers more than an acre with supports that stand in 60 feet of water and continue to the sand at 110 feet. The amount of marine life at this site is impressive. Because of its massive size, divers should be careful of line and gas supplies—and not to lose orientation.

Grey Ghost Twenty miles from the St. Andrews jetties, Grey Ghost is a 105-foot Navy tug boat sunk as an artificial reef in 1978 and remains mostly intact in 108 feet of water where the visibility is 20–50 feet. Diving with extreme caution and a knife is a must since monofilament fishing line is prevalent due to this location’s popularity with line fishing. Because the wreck sits alongside a natural limestone reef, marine life is abundant and is favored by underwater photographers.

Heat oil in a pan and fry lobster for one minute on each side. Place on paper towel to drain. Toast sourdough bread and assemble the sandwich with remaining ingredients. Enjoy!

Bacon-Wrapped Shrimp 1 cup grits 1 quart cream

6–7 large shrimp per person

6 oz. grated cheddar cheese

Bacon slices (cut in half) to wrap around each shrimp

Salt and pepper to taste 1/2 cup cider vinegar 1 cup pepper jelly 1/2 cup brown sugar 1 cup chicken stock

Wrap shrimp with bacon, but DO NOT OVERLAP. Place on skewer. (If using bamboo skewers, soak beforehand.) Shrimp may be broiled in the oven or cooked on the grill until the bacon is crisp. Cook grits according to package directions, substituting cream for the water. Stir in cheese. For the sauce, heat chicken stock. Whisk in brown sugar and vinegar; reduce by half. Add pepper jelly and stir. Place sauce in a bowl. Next, add grits and top with cooked shrimp. Garnish with chives. Dig in!

From the sandy marshes and tidal flats of St. Andrew Bay to the rocky depths where the continental shelf plunges to the ocean floor, the waters off Panama City Beach teem with marine life. For hundreds of years, long before Spanish explorers and pirates roamed the seas, Native Americans flourished from the Gulf of Mexico’s bounty. Today, pros and amateurs alike continue to catch an array of species, including amberjack, bluefish, cobia, flounder, grouper, king and Spanish mackerel, mahi mahi, marlin, pompano, redfish (or red drum), red snapper, trout, wahoo, sailfish, and yellowfin tuna. Many locals say that the spring and fall are their luckiest seasons, but a knowledgeable angler will be rewarded any day of the year. The cooling fall temperatures, for instance, stimulate fish to feed. That’s when redfish and trout aggressively go after bait near the top of the water. With pompano and others schooling along the beach, fishing near the shore also improves. As winter arrives, trout and redfish occupy the deep holes in the bay, or seek refuge in creeks and rivers. Flounder, pompano, and cobia, however, swim toward the shoreline for food. The warmer shores, in fact, lure larger fish throughout the cold weather. At the onset of spring, Spanish mackerel, bluefish, and cobia can be caught off the piers and in the bay, while trout and redfish populate the grass flats to feed. By summer, deepwater fishing rebounds with wahoo, yellowfin tuna, sailfish, and marlin. The season for red snapper, abundant and prized in the Gulf, begins at the first of June. Redfish and trout are more likely to bite in the bay during the early mornings or evenings of summer.

“Red drum are available year-round from the jetties and piers, as well as in the bay,” says Pam Anderson, operations manager for Capt. Anderson’s Marina in Panama City Beach. “They are great fun; just ask Governor Scott!”

For trolling and bottom fishing offshore, deep-sea excursions range from private crew charters on luxury yachts to large group experiences on party boats. Small boat rentals are also available.
