T
he Red Dot Award, one of the largest design competitions worldwide, yet again proved to be a trendsetting platform for high quality design and innovation. Organised by the Design Zentrum Nordrhein Westfalen; the award ceremony of the Red Dot Award: Product Design 2017, was held in Essen, Germany. Since 1955, the competition has been awarding prizes to excellent product design every year. In order to assess the diversity in the field of design in a thorough and professional manner, the award breaks down into three disciplines: the Red Dot Award: Product Design, Red Dot Award: Communication Design and Red Dot Award: Design Concept. NOVEMBER 2017
Is the interior of the CC Moment restaurant based on a specific design approach? Candle is the theme of this design, symbolizing life, warmth, and celebration. Candle-like lights are placed randomly around the restaurant. Some are installed vertically on the ground to act as screens between tables for privacy, some are hung upside down from the ceiling, some are installed horizontally from the wall. Diners can enjoy a warm and romantic dining experience surround by candles.
Just as how candlelight can’t shine without darkness, black colour has made yellow more prominent, as well as highlighting the candles in the design. Apart from the yellow candles, most of the other furniture and decorations are in black or grey. We want to create a calm and relaxing atmosphere where customers can chat and dine casually under the gentle candlelight. The floor pattern of the entire restaurant is constructed by stone patchworks, a combination of marble and tile.
What are the factors that influenced your choice of materials, colour scheme?
What were some challenges you faced while designing this project?
Inspired by candlelight in the darkness, the main colour tones of this design are black and yellow.
It was hard to present the theme of candles without merely using any real candles. It was also challenging

to install the candle-like lights, as the candles are 1.5m tall, they must be firmly installed to avoid accidents. Specially designed yellow elongated shaped “candles” were placed around the restaurant. To firmly plant them to the ground, we designed sets of L-shaped structures as a base for the candles, strengthening and fixing the position of installation. Besides, it was difficult to achieve the desired candlelight effect, the light had to be dim enough to imitate candlelight, but bright enough to illuminate the restaurant. A lot of mock ups were created before achieving the best lighting, after testing different types of glass, the designers chose frosted glass LED,
which created a romantic and highclass lighting effect.
What does it mean to you to be awarded a Red Dot for your design? We were really happy that CC Moment has been selected as a laureate of the Red Dot Award: Product Design. We have created a lot of cinema designs that have received very positive feedbacks, which led to many people’s misconception that One Plus only works on cinema projects. We are glad that our restaurant designs are recognized by quality competitions like Red Dot Design Award. It encourages us to continue exploring design projects in different industries.

Is the interior of the City Inn Chengdu project based on a specific design approach? We just wanted to meet the client’s requirement of renovating this hotel in a limited budget. So, no, there was no such specific design approach applied to this project.
What are the factors that influenced your choice of materials, colour scheme? We wanted to make people see the history of this area, and hence we decide to decorate the rooms of this project in monotone.
What were some challenges you faced while designing this project? In this project, budget was a major factor whereas location was also
COVER STORY another factor that we valued. This hotel is located right next to a famous historical sightseeing area- Kuanzhai Alley. And hence we have created the design of the hotel as a modern art gallery, which conveys the story of local history.
What are the highlights of this project? The room is in monotone, pictures on the wall are street views in blackand-white colour, furniture in black, white or grey are in retro style. The room looks like a pop-up photo. If a guest clicks picture in this room,
they will find out they are the only colourful object in a black-and-white photo.
What does it mean to you to be awarded a Red Dot for your design? First of all, I am really thankful to the Red Dot for honouring me with this valuable distinction. Well, I think it approves the strategy that we worked out for this project and even the judges too agreed to the fact that the project was designed in an interesting manner.
The highly original design approach that invokes the past gives the City Inn hotel a distinctive as well as unusual appearance — Statement by the Jury

xinhua bookstore,

Did you follow a particular theme for the restaurant? What are the factors that influenced your choice of materials and colour scheme? The restaurant--”Blue lake House” that we designed also won “Red Dot: Best of the Best” in 2016. Xinhua bookstore did follow the same design philosophy as this one- Simplicity, nature and humanity. In order to match the design, we have used a lot of solid wood and natural colour in the décor.
What was your source of inspiration behind the Xinhua Bookstore project? Our primary inspiration and design principle was derived from our observation and retrospection on the status quo of the society as a whole.
What sets your design apart from other projects? The biggest difference is in the expression of the human touch. How to design a habitat that invites the audience’s soul and spirit to take a rest? This lies at the core of our design. We have used the simplest and most natural design to connect people and books in various space scenarios, realize co-existence and harmony through a simple, tranquil, humble and low46

profile design language and space expression, and thereby transforming the space into an ecosystem with its unique atmosphere.
What were some challenges you faced while designing this project Xinhua Bookstore, the most wellknown book store in China, was established in 1937. As a most decent and old-fashioned book store, it leaves a stereotyped impression on the public that it belongs to the 70s to 80s of the last century with strong political tint. How to breaking down its old and conservative image
and reconstructing the brand and to make it align with the pace of the society we now live in is our challenge. We make the biggest difference is in the expression of the human touch.
How does it feel to be awarded a Red Dot: Best of the Best We are very excited, because in 2016 we got “Red Dot: Best of the Best” for another project--”Blue Lake House”. This year, we have won a “Red Dot: Best of the Best” award for two consecutive years. So winning “Red Dot: Best of the Best” is truly a great incentive to us.
The Xinhua Bookstore impresses with a highly consistent design concept. Based on a sophisticated metric system, the design encompasses all elements of the interior, with wood impressively serving as the main material to create a comprehensively harmonious appearance. The applied “shop-inshop” principle creates various spatial scenarios that place the shop visitors centre stage. All areas of the shop exude the same, almost subdued atmosphere of comfort and tranquillity — Statement by the Jury

taiwan
What inspired you to come up with such a spectacular design for Omni Nightclub Taipei? I always wanted to do something very special for my city. Through this night club project, I wanted to create a sensorial design experience which matches international design standards. The idea was to sync the spatial design with the lighting effect which lets one enjoy the out of the world design experience and lets people experience the beauty of nightlife which is very unique, dynamic and mystical.
The lighting of the club creates a unique experience for the club. How did you manage to merge it with the architecture of the club? The light streams through the space in linear guidance via a perfectly integrated transitional plane. This evokes attentiongrabbing images that condense 48

into an appealing scenario of circles, triangle and rectangles. Organic curves and arcs create the impression of action and mobility. The architecture of this club follows a distinctive symmetrical outline. Curved stairs on both sides guide visitors up to the second floor, inviting them to look down from the seat areas placed on the left and right. The light alternates between light and dark, showcasing different exciting shapes as the colours change. In combination with the spatial design, the performance of the spotlights evokes an intensive sensory experience.
How does it feel to be awarded a Red Dot: Best of the Best? Well, it feels extremely good to receive such a world renowned accolade, but to be very honest I have a long way to go and this recognition will only add to my

Skynet Exhibition Hall,
Shanghai, China
What was your source of the inspiration for SKYNET project? The project is located in the north of the Bund in Shanghai, the first row of the riverside, with excellent geographical position. Initially a fishing village, Shanghai was established as a commercial port in the Qing Dynasty and later it became a major trade port. After the Shanghai port was forced to open, the imperialists invaded Shanghai and set concessions here, building a large number of buildings and facilities. For more than a century, Shanghai was the paradise of foreign adventurers and invaders. After hundreds of years of development, it has now become a world famous metropolitan city. Inspired by the history of Shanghai, we encapsulated the fishing net as the core design element for the project. We used it in the decoration of ceiling, 50

forming a huge Skynet and that’s how we derived the theme of the project.
Tell us about the unique design technique used for SKYNET project? ‘Tenon joint process’ is a commonly used technique of Chinese traditional architecture, which is the crystallization of the ancients’ wisdom. It refers to the way of inserting Tenon into mortise, which is the basic combination of classical and modern furniture in China and it is also used as a main jointing method for modern framework furniture. Likewise, we have used this technique for creating the Skynet structure which is primarily inspired by fishing net concept. Raschel warp knitting machine with 4- 8 bar combs were used to connect a network with warp winding, which is called as warp knitted knotless

net or warp knitting method. The warp knitted knotless net is smooth, wear-resistant, light in weight, stable in structure and high in knot strength. The fishing net flows with wind, falls down to water and floats in the wave, drawing a dynamic outline. Applying the dynamic feeling of net casting process in our design, the building presents a feeling that the entire space is wrapped in a huge Skynet fell with the wind, if you look up from the bottom. During the construction, we have used the
tenoned skills of Chinese traditional architecture for connecting Skynet, so as to build a space which is rich in visual art effect.
What does it mean to you to be awarded the Red Dot Design award for your design? The Red Dot Design award is a great reward for my hard work, a dynamic power which only encourages me to better my work. It is a great honour to our company and also it strengthens our partner’s confidence on us.

In terms of materials used in the décor of the store, the architect duo said, “We followed our conviction, that it is the product and the brand that need full attention and not the architecture. The role of architecture is to support the presentation of the product and the world of the brand in the best possible way. Hence we zeroed down the use of sober colours that would not outbalance the products and the brand.” In terms of segmentation, the store has been effectively demarcated in three levels, which boasts brand and sub brands for Men, Women and Kids. The ground floor houses cosmetic and women´s accessories like handbags and fashion apparels. The level one displays Men’s apparel
and accessories, whereas the podium level features women shoes, lingerie, evening wear and a kid’s corner. The display of the above mentioned levels of the store has been adorned with world renowned brands such as Tom Ford, Dior, Armani, Sandro, Karl Lagerfeld, Jil Sande, Zadig & Voltaire, the Kooples, Zapa and Ralph Lauren. The best example of the modern interpretation of the French-Parisian style is the archaic “Coupole”. It is an artistic interpretation of the famous cupola at the retailers’ headquarters at Boulevard Haussmann in Paris. The highlight of the design concept is the atrium and – situated above – the cupola, made of polished steel prisms, that had been pressed with a pressure of 80 tons. The Coupole has been patterned with a new laser-cut technique and appears as a pendant lighting installation that serves as retail lighting as well as an artistic installation. The result: an exceptional installation, connecting high tech and beauty. Text Courtesy: Nisha Shukla

AMAZING ABODE
Inspired by nature, perfected by design Using timber as a primary source of inspiration, this amazing residential space, designed and owned by Aarti Aggarwal of Knock On Wood, is a perfect blend of traditional and modern aesthetics.
I
magine a stunning abode, on the purlieus of a luscious green neighbourhood and a serene lake, blending all the way into the cordial hands of mother-nature, designed and crafted on the basis of SouthEast Asian style of architecture and contemporary design accord. Tantalizing, you could argue. But that’s exactly what Aarti Aggarwal, founder of Knock-On-Wood (KNW) and the key designer of this residence had in her mind while penning down the design notes for this masterpiece. In fact, Knock on Wood, the bespoke furniture brand that Aarti runs, is the perfect example of an exquisite combination of Indian art with minimalistic contemporary design.
Styling and Sizing “Designed and built on the concept of Southeast Asian styling, the house for a multi-generational family is built on the premises of the surrounding green environs that necessitated a design which would allow for a direct connection to the built volume and indoor spaces with the nature” says Aarti. The house brings out a profound

rustic reminiscence of the golden age, where the architectural innovations were a prominent process of perfection and secretive innovations. Aarti, who studied domestic design from the University of Arts, London, has had her ways with the minimalistic contemporary designs that usually take a nominal millennial breath away. “The abundant greenery around makes one feel set within a forest, rather than being amidst the hustlebustle and chaos of a city.” Located in one of the prominent northern sectors of Chandigarh, the house is built on a plot size of 5-canal with beautiful gardens on either side of the plot, with a lake gushing through the silhouettes of the plot.

The house has been designed to optimize natural lighting and ventilation, optimizing a unique blend of tradition and modernity. The central courtyard are reminiscent of the traditional Indian style of architecture, where four halls are joined together with a central, opento-sky courtyard. Personalizing it, the courtyard is augmented with a decorative wooden fretwork panel and a grandeur chandelier. The wooden fretwork panels can be spotted almost everywhere, including the ventilation

panel above all doors, except one. That one door is an exception, mind you. We’ll loom to that in a while. “The overall design intent was to achieve simple, clean styling and open spaces that carry forward the visual aesthetic as well” The teak panelled walls with brick and wooden flooring break away from the monotony of typical bathrooms, manifesting them as spaces of delight. A large, open space on the first floor has a feature wall that has been painted on by a ‘Madhubani’ artist with a door that is about a century old. A door is said to be the gateway of light and darkness, day and night, or say, a perfect beginning and a catastrophic ending. So if you ask me the significance of a door, I’d say, it’s

substantial. The light passing through this fretwork creates an interesting pattern on the white Thassos flooring, creating a play that is theatrical, yet subtle in nature. “Each piece has been chosen with care, instead of conforming to a particular style. The artworks and carpets have been picked up over the years. Grounded and rooted with a touch of modern is what defines the furniture setting inside “, Says Aarti. An eclectic palette of colours has been used all the way from seating pillows to the curtain design. Aesthetically speaking, lay your eyes on a spot of choice and all you see is a knot of rejoice, dancing all the way through the chimes of colours. Very few curtains are used throughout the house, just the ones that are utterly mandatory. Other spaces are decked with wooden
fretwork panels and glass. Even while standing in the front, one can see through the house, right up to the tree in the back garden. Therefore, there is a deceptive sense of transparency along with the right amount of privacy that is required. “My favourite space is the room with the Madhubani painting. The way in which the space represents itself is like a doorway to another world, where one could find his zone of repose and introspection”, says Aarti when asked about her favourite space in the house. The ultimate grandeur of this residential project is, of course, the use of timber, ventilation and natural lighting techniques inspired by traditional design and perfected by modern aesthetics. The firm believes in creating spaces which are functional, aesthetic and visually appealing. In the following interview, Pritesh Meisheri talks about his journey and other interests.
Explain your journey to the design world and what compelled you to enter this field? Creativity runs in my family. Ever since I was a child I was fascinated by my dad’s creative business. That itself was my inspiration. Other than that I have always had a serious interest in reading, model making as well as observing buildings when I travelled. So, all these things led me into the field
of design and as a result, Prit Designers was established in the year of 2004 with a mission to create spaces that are functional, aesthetic and visually appealing.
How has your design philosophy evolved over time? ‘Design inspired by visions’ is what we believe in. We are passionate about the creative process and how it impacts the human experience. We believe that extraordinary interior designing is born when a collaborative experience is created by our clients and associates, focusing on clear communication, shared vision, practical design and experienced leadership.
Where do you draw inspiration from? My inspiration has been “Nature”. A deep look into nature unlocks imagination and instils creativity in me. Nature paints the most wonderful pictures that can take your breath

Your takeaway or lesson learnt from Architectural discourse CC: The power of long-lasting man-made transformations of the landscapes. MAS: Architecture is a discipline which embraces freedom, as a contradiction and a matter of responsibility. There is art in it but it is not art. It has to do with codes and laws but needs to translate them empathically into forms. It is strictly functional but needs to serve the delight of people.
A notable change you want to bring in this profession CC: Bridging between creativity and technical, freedom and boundaries, the discipline could become a tool to be taught in schools to very young generations. MAS: The profession needs a shift from being the servant of an only GDP driven approach. Recognizing and embracing the contradictions and the complexities of the contemporary, it needs to reacquire the role of

The design of Montblanc Haus is formed by a 100-metre-long volume reminiscent of a pen case that conceals a sophisticated sequence of spaces in three levels, articulated around a central illuminated atrium. A signature element of the project is the graphic facade.
OMA to expand the existing building of a contemporary art museum OMA has been selected to expand the existing building of the new museum- — Manhattan’s only dedicated contemporary art museum on the bowery, completed by SANAA in 2007. The project will involve the design of a new building on the adjacent property at 231 bowery that the museum purchased in 2008. Doubling the museum’s footprint, the expansion will provide an additional 50,000 square feet for galleries, improved public circulation, and flexible space. Marking OMA’s first public building in New York City, the design will be developed by Shohei Shigemitsu, who leads OMA New York, alongside Rem Koolhaas.
