or an individual “marriage” and “housing” are ideally one time decisions hence there is a tendency to explore any body of knowledge that govern these events. The idea is to ensure that the human lives involved in the process are blessed with happiness, and have a long and illustrious life. Since marriage is not exactly the expertise of our publication, we will stick to housing and elucidate on the significance of Vaastu in architecture. To put it simply Vaastu Shastra is an elaborate set of principles since millennia. It lays great emphasis on ratios and proportions which are universal and timeless. It’s akin to the concept of the Vitruvian man which will continue to maintain its relevance. Moreover, it is
fundamentally based on the earth’s magnetic field and its influence on physical masses. The significance of Vaastu continues to charm the young generation who wish to be global yet rooted in the tenets of this science. “A lot of clients we work with,” says Ar. Sandeep Khosla, Principal Architect, Khosla Associates, “request us to design their abode as per the tenets of Vaastu.” He points out to a project designed in Bangalore “In keeping with the clients desire for a strictly Vaastu compliant house, the placement of spaces in the house are in sync with the plan of the Vaastu Purusha Mandala . Thus apart from positioning the main areas of the house according to the elements

– Master bedroom in the Earth zone (SW), kitchen in the Fire zone (SE), and the pool and entrance in the Water zone and Air zones (N and NE), - even positions of doors, the direction of the stairs, location of beds, wardrobes and desks and the positions of the wc’s in the bathrooms had to be in accordance with the correct energy flows. Vaastu in contemporary times is being explored in renowned academic institutions. Earlier in the year the IIT – Khg introduced Vaastu in the curriculum, for many intellectuals this was akin to saffronisation of education since Vaastu is inextricably related to the Hindu way of living. However experts opine it as an unfortunate event. “Vaastu has its foundation in the earth’s magnetic directions and the effects of earth’s magnetic field on any built mass, as also that between

multiple built masses. It has simple physics at work which has simply not been researched enough,” says Ar. Tapan Maharishi, a fourth generation student of Vaastu and whose father Dharnidhar Sharma has successfully utilized the principles of Vaastu for 35 years across a range of residential, commercial and industrial projects. Relying on the scientific tenets of Vaastu Mr Dharnidhar Sharma has arrived at the same inference each time he addressed an issue pertaining to a defined alignment. “A simple example.” says Tapan, “is that Vaastu, thousands of years ago prescribed that the human body while inhabiting a space should be aligned parallel to the magnetic directions. In recent years, there has been scientific research and it is now acknowledged as Building Biology. Any religious linkage is unfortunate.” Dr Joy Sen who heads The Ranbir and Chitra Gupta School of Infrastructure Design and Management as well as the Department of Architecture and Regional Planning at IIT Kharagpur too believes even though the scriptures have been written in ancient linguistics, the treatise is scientific in nature. Adding to the ongoing studies being carried out in this regard he says “In

a recent and current initiative of what is known as SandHI, i.e., acronym of The Science and Heritage Initiative, a team of researchers are looking at deep Indian traditions through the lens of science. There are many areas from iconography to music; from geo-exploration to India’s longstanding creative economic traditions and so on.” One area of focus in this initiative is Sthapatya Vaastu Vidya the science of deep Indian architectural traditions. In this regards IIT Kharagpur is doing a pinpointed scientific exploration, totally divorced from either dry secular traditions of the agnostic or the conservative orthodox religious manipulations by many pundits. SandHI IIT Kharagpur is dispassionately and neutrally looking at the heart of the ancient science that combines the patterns of shades of cosmic energy principles; diverse constructs of healthy built environment; and the deep principles of the anthropic (human based) and ecological (nature based) sciences. “As an architect,” says Sandeep Khosla “the premise of logic in Vaastu in undeniable, usually in a country like India, when sun traverses from the east to 32

the west the effect of heat is most prominent in the southern and the western directions, likewise it is good to note that one is ideally advised to have narrow windows and a double wall in these directions. But let me add it is quite a challenge to build such projects. The biggest challenge we faced while designing the Vaastu House in Bangalore was to arrive at a visually appealing piece of architecture from a rigid program that dictated the specific locations of various spaces. Our approach was to respond to the traditional science, extract its essence yet arrive at a fresh and innovative interpretation of the same. The house, built on gentle splitlevels ascends lazily from north east (the lowest point) to the southwest (highest point) and envelopes an open to sky courtyard. Its linear horizontal
lines and vast cantilevered roof forms weave around the resident trees, and large expanses of glass blur the spatial boundaries between the garden and the house. There is a mix of luxe and natural elements in the Vaastu house – rough-hewn stone steps and walls, pebbled courts, exposed concrete ceilings and polished cement floors contrast well with polished Italian marble, fine teak furniture, velvets and silks. Directional affinities occupy a good deal of importance in Vaastu, apart from individual properties these rules are applicable to high-rises too in a precise way. “For example,” says Ar. Tapan, “a skyscraper consists of many flats aligned in a specific direction; the direction of the room, the flat, the building, the city is all the same. Everyone’s North is always the SEPTEMBER 2017

same. However the directional zones when being calculated are always for any plinth as a whole and never for individual units (flats) on a given plinth.” Apart from buildings the concept of Vaastu also touches upon factors aiding organization and domestication and division of a landscape. In Hinduism, the sacred mountain Kailash has four sides, from which flow four rivers to the four quarters of the world the Ganges, Indus, Oxus(Amu Darya) and Sita(Tarim) diving the world into four quadrants. It is but needless to say that every civilization that has existed on earth or continues to exist is connected to this science of alignment and proportions. The Chahar Bagh – is a Persian quadrilateral garden layout based on the four gardens of paradise mentioned in the ancient Persian texts.
In Chahar Bagh the main building is put at the centre of a quadrilateral garden, divided by walkways or flowing water into four smaller parts. Subsequent Islamic invasions led to the insertion of this school of thought in Islam and it became a prominent feature of the Mughal regime in India. Humayun’s Tomb and Ram Baugh are some of the best examples of this layout. “Indian Stapathya Veda – The Science of Vaastu,” points out Dr Sen “focusses on solar, ecological and terrestrial principles – on which everything else is based – even our nerve functions are guided by these principles – owing to the sun and the moon there are high tides in the ocean and the rivers. or nerves, that creates the play of the emotion. Hence we try to engage with the physical environment in Vaastu in order to create an initial balance and align our abodes with the harmonious forces which exists.” The science of alignment also finds its way into Europe especially Gothic Architecture and Grecko Roman Basilicas. Dr Sen points out that “Even Gothic Architecture and
Grecko Roman Basilicas are oriented towards the sun. The orientation of the gothic chapels in the direction of light comes very close to the tenets followed in Vaastu. The large chapels called cathedrals almost follow the same principals but in the European longitudinal and latitudinal context.” In the contemporary context one of the examples which can be cited at this point is Tadao Ando’s Church of

In a subject like Vaastu these coordinates are natural, so irrespective of where the knowledge originated the results are same globally. To some extent it is perhaps like yoga, irrespective of the religion in question the asana has the same effect on the mind, body and soul. It can be argued that the sound and intonation of the related hymns are linguistically inclined but then these are metaphors of the facts which govern the end result.

It also rests on the shoulders of the professionals and experts, to disseminate the precise knowledge of this science
”
Likewise in Vaastu a great deal of written text may be in Sanskrit, Prakrit or even Pali but the results are universal. The continual research which is carried out by architects globally has elevated individual consciousness to comprehend this fact, that knowledge is free of barriers unless acted upon by external and unbalanced dogma of pseudo intellectuals and religious orthodoxy of different denominations. Having said that the professionals and experts involved in the science of Vaastu also have to ensure that the knowledge does not become a ‘captive of limited availability’ and is made available to the masses in a format which is both inexpensive and lucid. Firstly, Congratulations to you and your team on successful completion of two years and thank you very much for featuring CMC in your prestigious issues. I am looking forward for a long term association and awaiting to read many such informative and valuable stories in forthcoming issues too. The magazine’s layout is brilliant. pulent royal palaces, ancient ruins, ornate temples and tropical beaches; with its “weapons of mass attraction” Thailand is perhaps one of the most preferred honeymoon destinations. It is here that our team found an office space which is draped in a modern yet esoteric avatar. timeline of 20 long years the growth patterns surged and it was time to connect the dots in the narrative. Apostrophy, a multi-disciplinary studio based in Bangkok was roped in to do the task. “The client,” say the architects “wanted the office space to herald an aura of the 80’s, when the business was incepted, at the same time the idea was to espouse a contemporary look using local materials. The attempt was clearly to retain the originality of brand in true light whilst adding to it a dash of present day modernity” SEPTEMBER 2017

The office space consists of four dedicated areas beginning with the reception which is an absolute stunner. Designed using glass, veneer and directional spotlights, the reception area acts as a creative summary of what awaits inside. A retro neon signage and a wooden sofaset add an element of magnificence to the design scheme. The working area which lies beyond, separates itself from meeting area using a clear glass sliding panel. But as and when necessary these separated zones can be unified as one. The artificial sky light above the working area is one of the USP’s of the office space. It makes overall space look akin to a glass house café. It also adds an element of visual allegory making the ceiling seem higher. Located in a corner, the director’s room espouses privacy with the required dose of comfort. The clever use of clear glass

here enables the director to observe everything in the office space. Two aspects which clearly dominate the interiors are the use of the colour green and veneer; together they concoct a tale which is visually appealing and symbolic at the same time. Glass is another element which adds light and opulence in this well designed office space “The benevolent use of glass illuminates the space with sunlight in the meeting room we replaced an existing wall with a full height clear glass window to achieve this effect. At the same time we also created a garden and pocket garden which offers the requisite amount of shade to even out the brightness and heat generated.” The space also makes use of aroma therapy. Herbal plants placed inside the office disseminate the typical aroma associated with the herbs; it lingers in the entire space clearly reminding the visitor of Wangproms affiliation with nature. Most of the materials utilised in the interiors were sourced locally including the dark wood veneer which adorns the existing columns and beams; the design idea the architects point out was inspired from local palaces built in and around the 80’s. The other end of the office space features a dark green 54

Considering the fact that the firm deals with herbs and herbal products, the use of green aligns the brand space with the roots of the brand. The symbolic tenets of its alignment are not restricted to the colour scheme alone, even the customized wallpaper features herbs; the major ingredient of Wangprom products. This wallpaper makes its presence felt in numerous spaces including the pantry and the restroom. The office space showcases opulence but it is quite surprising to know that all of it was achieved on a defined budget. The interior accessories which include furniture pieces like the chairs, sofas, cushions – then there are these carpets and even dishes; all of it was designed locally. “Because of the defined budget,” says the architects “we preserved the existing material and structure as much as possible. The flooring of the original office which features a light grey granite floor was retained. The walls were painted and some part of it was covered with custom made wallpaper. And then there’s the dark wood veneer which covers the existing columns and beams for creating a warm and welcoming space similar to what is ideally found in a tropical resort lobby.”

Grammatically speaking Bangkok and Wrangler are two nouns. One, among other things, is a favourite destination for bachelor parties while the other is known for its denims and cowboys.

ith increasing globalisation brands are moving much beyond their geographical borders. The hope of finding access to larger markets and increasing profits has seen major brands execute this exercise and brand Wrangler is one such brand. Since its inception Wrangler was associated with the cowboys who would wear the denims in a rodeo and with time its popularity soared beyond the USA. After having found success in the American markets Wrangler decided to open up to the Asian- Pacific region and

which required for an adaptation of the Wrangler brand heritage. Leveraging a unique consumer insight that in Asia a motorbike rider is the modern day cowboy, the Wrangler Roadhouse was designed as per the re-defined inputs, it captures the spirit of biker hangouts where riders share their stories, passions and get new gear. Going beyond a retail store, it is the destination for new generation of denim lovers to connect, explore and discover the latest denim culture.” “For the Asia-Pacific market, ”adds George “we designed a new Wrangler icon to ensure clear recognisability across different regions. We were given access to Wrangler’s design and advertising archives, and after some thorough research we identified key forms we could reference and refine. Based on these sketches, we fine tuned our selection and tested the designs with the key market groups. Once we had a final direction chosen by the client, we explored ways to bring the new icon to life within the retail environment.” All through the store the neutrality of the palate was important keeping in mind the merchandise receives the necessary attention. The selected palette included authentic materials such as brown oak, black mild steel, concrete and recycled denim. These materials were applied to the store design using refined and contemporary principles to evoke a contemporary roadhouse. The lighting scheme too was strategized to ensure it offers the requisite amount of brand leverage “The collection of

were important,” says George “communication wall, dressing room and dressing area, the cash point were designed to garner the requisite attention, and they serve as spaces where you could engage the prospective customer. Rest of it was laid out in a way such that it incorporated a degree of flexibility so that the client is in a position to display the franchise in a way they desired. Even the furniture and fixture system with a strong modular aspect is highly flexible allowing for multiple configurations. Each system can be modified to the space and transformed with each season.” Creating a new concept and roll out manual for a brand in a different geography is quite challenging, add to that consistent and adaptable execution. Classifying the office space that Mr. Sinha has has made simply as ‘interior decor’ would be to reduce what he has visualised on the same lines as his other installation art work

“M
aking art involves an emotional journey”, Calcutta based artist Narayan Sinha tells me. He is describing to me the rather fascinating process of designing the office of renowned production house SVF Entertainment Pvt. Ltd. As an artist who self identifies as a sculptor, he hesitates to classify what he has made simply as ‘interior decor’. This would be to reduce what he has visualised on the same lines as his other installation art work. “An immersive installation, then”, I offer, “exactly”, he quips. Mr. Sinha, the man who conceptualised a whole 25,000 sq ft office space as an immersive installation, has traversed a trajectory of creativity that simply cannot be contained under nominal categories and disciplines. Although he
established himself as a sculptor, he quickly realised that this only served to limit his framework, making his art exclusive pieces that could only be displayed in the context of the art gallery, to a specific, elite audience. He moved intuitively into jewelry making, seeing there an output for his skills of carving, shaping and molding things. The SVF office project is another such stop in his extraordinary journey. “The pair of door handles that greet you as you enter the office is a tribute to the spotlight. They are made of repurposed light stands.” A film lover, Sinha wanted to consciously introduce a reverence for the reel, which would serve as the thematic groundwork for the design. He developed his vision to the client over more than fifteen candid dinners and chats, and was awarded full freedom to unleash his aesthetic intuitions upon the space.

Although he was first approached to create an installation that would be part of the renovated office space, it became clear that his astute vision was expansive enough to fill the whole office space. Delightfully eloquent, he breaks down every little bit of the meticulously designed space for me. The reception area features a stunning chandelier made of trumpets with a shiny brass finish. “I have generously used musical instruments because SVF is also an ace music production company”. The idea was a create a space that inspired creativity with these persistent and aesthetically placed references. “You know, offices in Calcutta tend to be very casual. People come and go, and not much might be
done in between. I wanted to create a place that resonates with energy and glamour and motivates everyone in the space”. There is room, too, for the casual, loungy element that is so essentially a part of Calcutta, in the industrial style cafeteria. This unique response to the context of Calcutta and Bengaliyana unsurprisingly serves as a thematic basis. Tinted orange filament light bulbs on a C Stand fall on a picturesque cityscape of Kolkata, the city of joy. The main office area has a unique light installation with 213 taxi headlights, rekindling nostalgic memories of people traveling together in quaint yellow ambassadors early in the morning. Elsewhere, the monochrome is playfully offset by the generous use of glass, for colour, reflecting the vividness of modern cinema. umbai based architectural firm, Edifice Consultants is better known for its sustainable designs and voluminous projects. Founded by architect duo Ravi Sarangan and Sanjay Srinivasan, the firm specialises in a number of architectural and urban design services that have won them recognition in India and abroad. The architectural projects developed by the firm aims at improving the immediate environs of the project and contribute to the wellbeing of its occupants and its social environs. In the following interview, Ar. Ravi Sarangan talks about his firm’s design journey, philosophy and other interests.
Tell us something about your design journey and the various experiences you went through? Right after graduating from Sir JJ College of Architecture in 1987, Sanjay Srinivasan and I decided to set up our own practice, as it was quite fashionable in those days, especially in the early 90’s to start your own enterprise. This profession actually demands for self-practice. Post our mandatory 16 week, professional training, we took that plunge and started our practice from our homes. Being a young firm, nobody trusted us with our architectural skills and hence we received a few interior assignments. I remember very well, our first project which we had undertaken was a small kitchen unit which was executed for Rs.6, 000. Subsequently, we received our first major interior design project from the Indo American Chamber of Commerce (IACC) which led to a few more, from their members. The post liberalization era in the early 90s also turned many 86

things in our favour, as during this time the Information Technology sector witnessed a major boom. Since one of our initial clients were a couple of IT firms, I wrote a letter to Mr. Narayana Murthy at Infosys and he responded to my email within 48 hours and asked us to meet him in Bangalore. Mr. Murthy was very impressed with the body of our work and he assured us that he would come and meet us at our Mumbai office. In the meantime we had already set up a small office space which was a 16ft x 9ft garage in Chembur, Mumbai. Due to work commitments Mr. Murthy couldn’t make it to our office, but he visited a couple of our projects in Mumbai and gave us our first project in Manipal Centre, Bangalore. This proved to be a major breakthrough for us. We delivered that project in record time and later we did their second project in Chennai followed by their third project in Mangalore

In 1999-2000, TCS and Cognizant approached us to execute their end to end campus that included the building + interiors. We did a project for CTS at Kolkata and for TCS at Thane. The project for TCS dealt with converting an old factory into an office space. Similarly for the Vodafone Headquarters, we had converted an old factory into an office space. Likewise, Tata Teleservices also approached us to convert an old factory into an office space. So suddenly out of nowhere we started bagging these really large architectural projects and as a result our organization’s strength grew from 16 in 1996 to 100 in the year 2000. under a ‘starchitect’ title. Moreover, we believe in investing in our people. Today we have got employees who have spent 15 and 20 years in Edifice. We have eight branches in the country which gives us a more holistic view. For us, our people come first and then the clients. So we have built a great family which is very rare in today’s times. We are 27 years young firm with deep rooted values and we are very proud of this fact. Another important aspect is the two important attributes that each Edifician has imbibed over the years, namely humility and mutual respect. This has helped us forge a deep relationship with our clients, consultants and vendors. In a way we have developed a whole ecosystem and we share a symbiotic relationship with them.
Edifice- Version 2. During this period, some really talented people joined our workforce and our primary focus was to excel on design, while still handling large projects. Last year, we completed the Tata Realty-Ramanujan IT Park at Chennai which was a 6 million sq.ft structure and was completed in a span of four years. We had also delivered three campuses for Tata Consultancy Services at Gachibowli and Adibatla at Hyderabad and Hinjewadi, Pune totalling to around 6 million sq.ft. We also did the JSW Corporate office at BKC and the Corporate Office for Reliance ADAG at Santacruz.

Tell us about your firm’s major achievements? There are two distinct periods of growth. The first one was between 1999 till 2007 which saw some frenetic growth in the country due to economic liberalisation and the I.T boom. We learnt to handle some large projects. We delivered large complicated projects for clients such as Infosys, Cognizant, HCL etc. in record time. The second period was from 2007 to the present, which was post the Sub Prime crisis - we call this as

A notable change you would like to bring in the architectural education system? The quality of education has deteriorated in the recent past and it needs some drastic revamping. There are too many colleges emerging today but serious efforts should be laid to uplift the quality of teaching imparted in these colleges.
What interests you outside of work? Cricket. We have our own cricket team and I am one of the players in the team. During cricketing season we play every week. In fact we help host a tournament for architects; it’s called the Architectural Premiere League (APL) and has been successfully held over the last five years. It’s basically a T-20 format game, in which 12 to 16 teams from eminent architectural firms (from Mumbai and Pune) participate. This is held between October and February.
What advice would you give to design aspirants? Travel a lot !; learn about contemporary and early architecture including temples, mosques and other institutional projects which came up in pre and post-independence era. One needs to experience places, places, study cultures, read more books on design.

sn’t it fun to dine at a space which has an art gallery like ambience along with India inspired art installations as the main design elements? Then redirect yourself to the newly launched +91 India Calling restaurant at Juhu, Mumbai. Nestled in the cosy lane of Gulmohar road, the casual and artsy décor of the restaurant makes you nostalgic with its in-depth detailing and aesthetics which has been creatively put together by Interior Designer, Minnie Bhatt. The client brief was to design atypical casual dining space, for their Indian cuisine restaurant which specialises in serving food from various states of India. Keeping in mind the brief, designer Bhatt has effectively created
an eclectic and contemporary décor which steer clears from the stereotypical Indian design elements.

At the main entrance door, the designer has efficiently used brightly painted pigeon sculptures, in different postures to visually engage guests and to also lend a bit of quirk to the front. Continuing the art gallery theme to the interiors, the designer has effectively adorned the space with art installation which is housed in the

Each installation has been created by an artist, with a descriptor explaining the artwork, and the thought behind it. This apart, one large wall has an artwork created with vintage Indian matchbox label art which makes one nostalgic and gives a direct depiction of the era in which it was created. In terms of the flooring, the restaurant has been done in beige IPS whereas the ceiling has been created in geodesic pattern with cement sheets. While the flooring has been kept simple, the ceiling has been created with a geometric pattern which adds to the art gallery vibe of the space. The live kitchen area which houses the Tandoor has a backdrop of burnt yellow handmade tiles, and the front is created with vintage wooden louvered window shutters. The central space of the restaurant is a long table with lights created out of bicycle wheels suspended over it. had specifically sourced the vintage TV sets and repurposed them as shelves to display liquor bottles. The bar apron and the live kitchen apron are created with cast cement lattice blocks. As one moves ahead, there is a small mezzanine and basement seating area, where due to the height constraints, the space had to be kept minimal. The walls in the mezzanine has been given a bright teal blue as a background colour whereas the space has been adorned with couches customised with tall backs and are upholstered with a chevron pattern complemented with contrasting piping and buttons. The service stations have bright coloured insides and have been designed to look like fun crockery cabinets. The furniture used in the restaurant have been customised to complement the look of the space. The table tops are done in white Indian marble and carved wooden bases whereas the chairs are designed with cane backs in a contemporary style. The flooring of the bar section and the mezzanine is done in wood. In terms of lighting, the restaurant has been illuminated by warm LED lights throughout. “G
ood design is rooted in our underlying philosophy – Better Design Better Living – making design more approachable, livable and necessary in our lives.” say Brad Satterwhite and Jonathon Kemnitzer, Principle Architects at KEM Studio. “We don’t prescribe to a “style” of design – design is a direct reflection of our client’s brand, work style or lifestyle. We have a modern approach in the sense that we strive to express the most essential aspects of a project through clear planning, honesty of materials and methods, and a sense of simplicity.” KEM Studio recently designed a modern lodge for Austin and Leslie Walsh. The abode was designed as a space where the couple could unwind and at the same time throw parties for near and dear ones. “We want a modern lodge on the lake” said the client when they approached KEM Studio to design their project. Both the clients worked within the urban core of Kansas City, MO and were keen to leave the city lifestyle behind them at the end of the day. Post the briefing, the architects deemed it was necessary to interact at a personal level to have a proper understanding of what was desired. Successive rounds of discussions followed leading to the genesis of Modern Lodge located on a private lake in Weatherby

Missouri. The lodge is spread across 3,200 square feet with basement, common area that includes kitchen, dining room and living room, 3 bedrooms, dressing room, 3.5 bathrooms, TV room, office and a play area. The lodge was designed in a way to offer wonderful views of the lake across all three levels. This was made possible by orienting the glazing wall of the home towards the southwest; in addition to offering the best views, it also welcomes the summer wind which blows from the southwest across the lake. This ensures that the house gets the required deal of natural air flow, which in turn keeps it cool. With this glazing wall facing the direction of the most solar gain, a wood slat screen was integrated into the facade to block the sun. Building this space had its fair share of challenges . The site is very steep, narrow and rocky, limiting on what and where the home could be positioned. Besides with a moderate budget, we had to consider how to make the regular materials look beautiful. For example, all the hardwood floors in the home are constructed from “utility grade” white oak. This is typically, a material used in areas to serve a utilitarian purpose, yet, this flooring created a modern approach to a rustic “lodge” floor. SEPTEMBER 2017

The choice of materials was done cautiously keeping in mind the site of the project and the function it was expected to perform. “Honest materials were used,” say the architects, “No materials were altered or manipulated to appear as anything other than what they are. Wherever concrete was used for the foundation, it was left exposed as a primary finish. Natural woods were used on the exterior and interior with a natural oil sealing system to enhance the natural beauty of the product.” All of the walls in the house are painted white and the flooring utilises a natural material. When the house is draped in natural light, the colour from the floors and the furniture in the space reflect onto the walls, creating a warm ambient light. The façade is a unique synthesis of panels and glass; together with the screen it creates quite an impression. “The concept draws from the owner’s passion as a commercial photographer and the process of capturing an experience with a still photo,” say the architects“The house is two simple platonic forms, one resting on the other, pulled apart to create an aperture for the lake. leaving the city behind and immersing yourself in lake living. The main public space is a wood clad, two-story volume filled with light and the lake view. This is contrasted by a crisp, white stucco volume housing the private functions. The house is physically connected to the lake with large stones extracted from the site.” Most of the interior accessories utilised in the project are a collection of pieces that the clients have collected over the years. It also features customised accessories designed by Kansas City designer Joe Munson. The dining table is a custom fabricated piece by Studio Build. The site was home to an oak tree which had to be razed, a local craftsman was hired create some furniture elements out of the derived oak pieces. The project utilises general lighting, softly illuminating the interior throughout the day and allows natural light to be at the forefront. A custom designed pendant light in the living space garners apt attention. In designing the Modern Lodge the architects fostered a personal approach towards the client. It revealed opportunities which enhanced and supported the lakeside living lifestyle they wanted to embrace. The subsequent conversations helped the architects focus on the finer aspects of the design. Pair that with the precise choice of materials and timely execution; and it can be said without doubt that the Modern Lodge serves as an epitome of a unique and tailored made solution. ver since my wife Madhvi and I met in the classrooms of St. Xavier’s College in 2003while pursuing our Economics degrees,” says Revant “we harboured hopes of starting our own venture someday. We were always very passionate about design & architecture; one of our favorite things to do in those days was to take walks around the streets lining Oval Maidan and admire the contrasting yet complimentary styles of Art Deco & Gothic architecture staring down at each other.” A very picturesque love story indeed! And even sweeter is the fact that the realisation of this dream led to the origin of Bark & Groove (B&G). The furniture brand was incepted after the duo Madhvi and Revant spent 5 years in the corporate sector. But given the changing face of Indian architecture and design; with international brands coming in how feasible is the idea of a niche and customised entity? “With the average age of the Indian homeowner dropping at a rapid pace and the widespread use of mediums like Pinterest ensuring exposure to all the latest global design trends, a bespoke furniture service like ours is more relevant now than ever,” believes Revant. “These well-travelled millennial homeowners,” continues Revant,
“have a clear vision of what they want to come home to every evening and are no longer willing to retrofit massproduced, one-size-fits-all furniture designs to their interior spaces. This is where Bark & Groove hopes to step in – more as the facilitators of their imagination.” A look at the merchandise B&G offers sums up this fact, even the nomenclature of these products are out of the ordinary like Rasputin, Starry Night, Super Shaq, Baby Shaq and Melisandre. After some prodding Revant decided to spill the on the unusual nomenclature and said “We’re just pop-culture buffs to be honest and we believe every piece of furniture churned out of Bark & Groove’s workshop has a very distinct personality. Hence we end up naming our products - usually after references to pop culture or stuff that we are fans of. For example I’ve always found Russia’s history quite fascinating so we’ve named one of our pieces ‘The Rasputin’, similarly Madhvi is a big fan of Vincent Van Gogh’s impressionist art, so we’ve named one of our blue
