The aim of this prospectus is to introduce you to the College and provide you with information regarding the opportunities and learning that take place here and to assist you in understanding why we are very proud of our College, its history and its place at the heart of the community. Bodmin College provides an ‘outstanding’ (Ofsted 2010) educational experience, in which we maintain high standards of achievement and traditional values, within a disciplined and caring environment. Students are encouraged to enjoy their education, to practice respect for others and develop as mature individuals, ready to take an active role in adult life. Ofsted’s 2010 judgment placed the College in the top 8% of secondary schools across the country and confirmed our place at the forefront of high performing schools.

are looking for a high quality Sixth Form experience with personalised learning and individual staff support, then Bodmin College may well become your first choice for Further Eductation.

‘… the consistently good teaching and … an extremely broad academic and vocational curriculum is personalised to such an extent that it meets the needs of vulnerable students as well as Oxbridge candidates.’

We are open to any student who wishes to work hard and add to, or improve, their qualifications in order to better their future. We have a very diverse and flexible student-centred curriculum, designed around both individual and cohort requirements.

In 2014, Ofsted viewed the College very favourably with a superb report outlining the leadership, the quality and range of our provision and our links with Higher Education as strengths of our Sixth Form. Ofsted have more recently also praised the College’s leadership, the quality and range of our provision of subjects, and our links with Higher Education as strengths of our Sixth Form. Following our fantastic success as a Specialist Science College, we received acknowledgment as a High Performing Specialist School, because of the exceptional progress being made by our students. Consequently, we were afforded the opportunity to pursue a second specialism as a Centre of Excellence for Leadership. With notable success, we were the first college in the county to be awarded the Specialism Quality Mark, used by the National College to assess educational performance across a range of criteria. This prospectus is a guide to the Sixth Form at Bodmin College, which caters for around 400 students. If you

Our proven tradition of very strong and successful Sixth Form teaching, together with excellent guidance systems and significant extra-curricular opportunities, has enabled our reputation to be amongst the very best in the county. This reputation has drawn increasing numbers of students from a wider area to us, who gain success and progress into higher education, employment and/or training. Whether you are arriving from Bodmin or outside of the area, we know how important it is to find out as much as you can about the College, our objectives, aims and values. We are hopeful that this prospectus is of assistance in helping you to make the important decision regarding your future studies, but we also encourage anyone interested to attend our information evenings or contact us personally to ascertain what we can offer. You will be made most welcome and we guarantee that we will do our very best to support and care for every young person making the commitment to join our Sixth Form. Yours sincerely, Brett Elliott, Principal

AS| A 2

T

EXPLAINED he A level qualification comprises two parts, AS and A2. The AS level is a one year course made up of three topics/units of work.

It can be a stand alone qualification or lead on to a second year of study to complete the full A level qualification i.e. AS + A2 = A level. Some AS levels are Vocational which means that 2 of the 3 units will be examined via course work and marked by your teachers. The other unit will be externally examined. Vocational A levels involve more visits to places and people involved in the subject area and will expect a more independent style of study. Two Vocational A levels (Health & Social Care and Art & Design) are classed as Double Awards, equivalent to two A level grade passes from A-E. Non-Vocational A levels are assessed less by course work and more by examined units. Both Vocational and non-Vocational A levels are marked on an A-E grading system and therefore carry the same weight in terms of points for entry into Higher Education.

VRQ|NVQ|BTEC

N

EXPLAINED

ational Vocational Qualifications and Business and Technology Council qualifications are work-related and competence-based. They reflect the skills and knowledge needed to do a job effectively, and show that a candidate is competent in the area of work the NVQ, VRQ or BTEC represents. They cover all the main aspects of an occupation, including current best practice, the ability to adapt to future requirements and the knowledge and understanding that underpin competent performance. Vocational Qualifications can be taken by College students with a work placement or part-time job that enables them to develop the appropriate skills. Vocational Qualifications are achieved through assessment and training. Assessment is normally through on-the-job observation and questioning. Candidates produce evidence to prove they have met the standards. Assessors ‘sign-off’ units when the candidates are ready - the assessor tests candidates’ knowledge, understanding and work-based performance to make sure they can demonstrate competence in the workplace.

ENT RY

REQUIREMENTS

I

n order to enrol on an AS or A2 course, you will need to have achieved a minimum requirement of five grade C passes at GCSE. However, if you wish to study Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics, Biology or a language, you will be better equipped to cope with the demands of these courses if you have achieved at least grade B.

Students will have to resit English and Mathematics whilst studying A level or Vocational Subjects if you achieve below C grade at GCSE. In order to enrol on any of the Vocational courses at Level 2, you may have a lower grade entry profile, but the decision will be based more significantly on your commitment to the course, any experience you may have had in this area and the results of an interview. Any students not meeting entry requirements will be considered through a personal interview for an alternative programme that is appropriate to their ability and aspirations. 7.

odmin College has a number of professionally designed programmes in place to support your success and to help

The William Clift Academy is the umbrella under which our students have the chance to engage with a range of opportunities, the Academy Professions Programme and/or our Widening Participation Programmes.

William Clift Clift was born in 1775 into extreme poverty, one of seven children whose father died when he was very young. He attended Bodmin School and as a result of his drawing ability, combined with support from a local philanthropist, he went on to dissect, draw and finally curate at the Hunterian Museum at the Royal Society of Surgeons. Clift was made a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1823. Clift represents the desire to achieve in spite of problems. He had a passion for drawing combined with scientific curiosity and, in his quest to succeed, combined two subjects that traditionally are seen as separate. At Bodmin College we share this thirst for success - for all our students, whatever their interests. Coming full circle, Bodmin College’s Head of Science, speaking at the House of Lords to launch the Royal Society’s Vision for Education in 2014, epitomises our influence in the world of education. Being a Royal Society Associate School offers a myriad of opportunities for educational enhancement.

EXTENSION ACTIVITIES There are opportunities for you to gain an Extended Project Award in a related field. Through supported independent study, you can gain additional UCAS points by undertaking research in an area of personal interest.

ENHANCEMENT GROUP The popular Enhancement Group is designed to both prepare you for interview and give you experience of academic debate and the consideration of topical global issues.

As a self-governing body elected by the students for the students, we meet monthly with the Principal of the College, the Director of the Sixth Form and the Assistant Head of Sixth Form in order to enable the effective communication of student ideas for events and improvement. Our role also involves organising events such as the Leavers’ Ball, Freshers’ Parties and the numerous fundraising activities that occur on a regular basis throughout the year, as well as playing a prominent role as Ambassadors at Open Evenings and mentors for the international students who enrol at the College. Our Sixth Form College and experience is what we make it, so we aim to make it the very best we can through encouraging you all to participate as a Council Member or, if that is not for you, then through providing us with ideas and inspiration.
