Our Outlook
As the colours of autumn creep into the countryside, Cornwall takes on a golden glow, easing itself out of summer to take on a more sedate pace. If we’re lucky - and most years we are - summer will linger just a little longer. Its southerly location means September can be a knockout month, with sunshine warming the shores and countryside. With our refurbished restaurant, private pontoons and the newly opened Working Boat pub spicing up our quay, there has never been a better time to unwind and escape to The Greenbank.
Introducing our new Water’s Edge Restaurant and Bar 2015 started with a bang as the renovation of the hotel’s restaurant and bar got underway. We are proud to announce that it has now been completely refurbished. Our new Water’s Edge Restaurant and Bar offers guests a refreshing dining experience. General Manager Ben Young says: “There’s been quite a departure from our previous styling, but we’ve made sure everything’s remained characteristically Greenbank.” The restaurant now enjoys contemporary styling while still embracing the building’s history. Relaxed and informal, you’ll discover modern art on the walls from Cornish artists as you unwind over supper. A fresh new look by Dynargh Design blends booth seating and parquet flooring with a combination of nautical elements and art deco glamour to create an elegant yet relaxed and comfortable dining space. Features such as bespoke chandeliers made from decanter bottles and striking abstract art from local gallery North 55 add to the atmosphere and make the dining experience a feast for the eyes as well as the palate.

Nick continues, “The atmosphere of the Greenbank is part of the town. I remember this from my childhood, jumping off the quay and eating at the old Working Boat pub. Now it’s my children jumping off the quay and I aim to bring back those good old fashioned family values.”
Head Chef Nick Hodges Award-winning chef Nick Hodges grew up in Falmouth and trained under chef legends Keith Floyd and Jean Christophe Novelli. He returned to Cornwall to run restaurants at the Headland Hotel and the Rosevine, as well as to teach at Jamie Oliver’s Fifteen Foundation. Now he’s bringing 25 years of cooking experience, and serious passion for local Cornish produce, to the Greenbank. “I’m from Falmouth and the Greenbank is special to me. It’s always been the dream to cook here and I wouldn’t work for any other hotel at this point in my career,” said Nick. The new menu has been designed to perfectly fit the Greenbank ethos, focused on what Nick calls ‘Rustic Fine Dining’; “All the quality and flavours you’d expect from a fine dining experience, but more relaxed and rustic, not pretentious or fussy,” explains Nick. As you’d expect, the new menu has been designed around top notch ingredients from local suppliers. The classics will stay, but in celebration of the produce available right on the Greenbank’s doorstep, the menu will also be championing local fresh fish.
“The food will have an emphasis on classic flavours, slower cooking and succulence. I want to bring the quality and taste of the produce front and centre, and encourage our diners to take their time, savour the dishes and enjoy the Greenbank’s surroundings.” Nick’s arrival is perfectly timed to coincide with a complete overhaul of the restaurant interior. The new restaurant will have all-day dining and food can be served throughout the hotel, so diners can eat what they want, when they want, where they want.
Menu Highlight Falmouth Bay Mackerel Pickled, mousse, grilled, fennel potato salad. Accompany with a glass of: Gavi Briccotondo, Fontanafredda, Italy 2013 - 12.5% abv. Lemons and minerals on the nose followed by a fresh palate, medium body and no oak.

Introducing our Head of Treatments Hannah Darling
How long have you been a treatment practitioner? I graduated with my ITEC Anatomy & Physiology and Massage from Truro College in July 2004, and then each year I have continued to learn a new discipline to enhance my range of treatments with Reflexology, Pregnancy Massage, Manicures and Pedicures, Oriental Face Massage and Eyebrow and Lash Tint and Shape. What is your favourite treatment? I love doing Oriental Face Massage. It is a thoroughly relaxing treatment for the client, stimulates the skin and muscles of the face, and leaves you feeling refreshed and calm. What products do you use? I use a range of products but favour organic products with no synthetic fragrences or parabens for skin and body to keep the treatments as natural as possible for you. For Manis and Pedis I use Jessica Nail Polish and CND Shellac with a range of colours and finishes to choose from. When you are not pampering other people what do you like to do? I am often found on the coastal paths with my dog Archie, or on windy days down at the beach doing a spot of kitesurfing. I love cycling and swimming too, but to totally relax I can be found in my garden pottering about with the dog.

An eye to the past HMS Warspite
HMS SHIP IMAGE
Dubbed ‘one of the greatest warships ever built’, in a career spanning 30 years the Warspite became the most battle-honoured warship in British Naval history, after fighting to protect the nation in both World Wars. More than 30,000 people, including Winston Churchill, came to see her launch from Devonport in Plymouth. She was one of the most technically advanced ships of her time, with oil-fired boilers (most ships still used coal) and the largest guns ever mounted on a warship of her kind.
HMS SHIP IMAGE
She was the first allied warship to open fire on D-Day and received 15 battle honours during her naval history. To show their respect to ‘the most honoured battleship ever built’ the South West’s maritime and naval elite assembled at the Greenbank Hotel to mark the 100-year anniversary of HMS Warspite’s commissioning. Although the battleship sank off the coast of Cornwall in 1948, parts of her quarterdeck now form the dance floor in the hotel’s Water’s Edge bar. Commodore Jamie Miller, CBE, naval Regional Commander for Wales and Western England, said: “Falmouth has got a long legacy of being a Royal Navy safe haven, from the 1942 St Nazaire raid to the recent arrival of the Royal Fleet Auxiliary Argus, which returned from West Africa after 172 days [in the fight against Ebola] and is based at Falmouth Docks.”
“It was Falmouth tugs that tried to salvage the Warspite after she ran aground in a storm off Prussia Cove all those years ago. It was thanks to those heroic actions that we brought her in. Today is about the memory of that and the link with Falmouth in this historic location of the Greenbank Hotel.” Commodore Miller presented the hotel manager Ben Young with the original bronze crest from the Warspite, along with two ceremonial plaques, to reunite them with the original timber from the ship. The hotel also received a painting of the Warspite in her heyday, which will take pride of place in the bar, commemorating the historic link with the ship.

Real Weddings at the Greenbank Following their incredible wedding at the Greenbank, Rachael and Daniel had an amazing honeymoon: travelling to Hawaii and mainland America; visiting Kauai and Maui; spending time in Las Vegas and the Grand Canyon; and visiting friends in Boston and Vermont. We asked Rachael for her top tip for any bride planning her wedding at the Greenbank: We loved the wedding of Rachael and Daniel who tied the knot at the Greenbank! They initially met having been set up on a blind date by close friends. They went out for dinner with their friends in Falmouth and the rest is history!
“Take time to stand back and take it all in, especially the beautiful views in the early evening! Also, get to know the staff, as they make your day even more special. Finally, make sure you enjoy a cocktail or two!
Daniel proposed on holiday in oh-so-romantic Venice at the Campanile di San Marco looking out over the views of the city.
To find out more about weddings at the Greenbank contact our wedding & events team on 01326 312440.
The couple knew instantly they wanted to get married at the Greenbank because of the beautiful setting and stunning views towards and beyond Flushing. Having enjoyed many a cocktail in the bar on a Friday evening and wanting somewhere they could rely on for superb cuisine, Greenbank was almost a dead-cert, but what made it the leading choice were the hotel team and how friendly and welcoming they are. Rachael and Daniel scored us top notch for customer service! Rachael wore a stunning Fargo by Enzoani dress from Lavender Rose in Penryn. It had intricate lace detailing and flowers down the train. It was sensational and she looked a million dollars! The food on the day was a selection of fine dining favourites such as smoked salmon, rillette of Cornish duck, slow roast shoulder of lamb and sticky toffee pudding. A pianist played Debussy Claire de Lune during the ceremony and an instrumental version of Happy by Pharrell Williams. They also hired a local guitarist to play during the wedding breakfast.

The Working Boat Summer 2015 has seen the reopening of our Working Boat pub on the Greenbank Quay. Traditionally the first port of call for those on the Working Boat after a hard day out at sea, the pub will be opening for everyone to enjoy. Serving food and real ales to everyone, whether you arrive by road, foot or boat. Simply tie up and sink a few with us!
History of the Working Boats Living relics from a bygone age, the Falmouth Working Boats make an impressive sight, and few people are underwhelmed by the beauty of these powerful gaff-rigged cutters under sail. Outwardly, little has changed in nearly 200 years, their existence being a direct result of the local harbour byelaws prohibiting the dredging of oysters by any mechanical means. Working under sail and oar during the winter months from October to March, these unique boats have survived to become the last of their kind in Europe.

What our guests had to say... Don’t just take our word for it, here are some guests thoughts on how the Greenbank Hotel exceeded expectations.
“Memorable stay”
“Best Hotel in Cornwall”
This excellent hotel in a fantastic location way exceeded our expectations. From the friendly but professional response to my e mails when booking, to the warm welcome on arrival and the first class service in the bar and restaurant everything about our stay will long be remembered. Our room as requested had an amazing view and was spacious, comfortable and spotlessly clean. For the staff nothing was too much trouble and our every request was met with charm and warmth. Definitely a place to recommend and we will be back!
I have stayed in many hotels throughout the world - for work and holidays. I have to say that the Greenbank is one of the nicest hotels I’ve ever stayed in - in Cornwall, UK, Europe, Africa and Asia. All the rooms I have stayed in are beautifully furnished and most of them have spectacular views. My latest stay - my room was particularly stunning - amazing sea views from the huge bay window and a very spacious room. The staff are always friendly and helpful.
