INTRODUCTION Welcome to our third Festival of Chichester. It’s going to be our best yet – the most wonderful expression of all the rich and varied talents which flourish in this beautiful city we are so proud to call home. Once again, we extend the warmest of welcomes to plenty of visiting artists and performers, but as always, it’s the home-grown talents which are central to our programme, and we are delighted at the way they have stepped forward for our 2015 line-up. You simply couldn’t wish for a more sparkling festival than the one we offer you this June and July, a thrilling classical programme matched by world, roots and folk music of every kind, alongside an exciting line-up of speakers plus a full range of theatre. The Festival also offers a dazzling variety of artists showing their skills, plus a full programme of community events including walks, fetes and, of course, our Festival Eucharist service. From the start, we have been delighted to work hand in hand with Chichester City Council who have offered us every support imaginable. In 2014 they made a substantial contribution to our Festival funds, and they have done so again for 2015. This year, we are delighted to welcome Chichester District Council on board, with generous grant support for our efforts to publicise ourselves. As ever, we also owe an immense debt of gratitude to the Chichester Observer. Without the Observer, there simply wouldn’t be a Festival of Chichester. And it is to all these friends and supporters that we dedicate this year’s line-up. There’s endless imagination in our programme. There’s endless invention. Make sure you’re part of it! Come and join the fun! Phil Hewitt, Festival chairman and Barry Smith, Festival co-ordinator

Translated by Jeremy Sams. Director: Jeremy Sams. May 8-June 6, Minerva Theatre. The Count is planning another spectacular party, including an evening of amateur dramatics, but it soon becomes clear there will be as much passion and intrigue off stage as on. Jeremy Sams returns to Chichester to direct this sumptuous comedy, having also provided the celebrated translation. A DAMSEL IN DISTRESS. Music and Lyrics by George Gershwin and Ira Gershwin. Book by Jeremy Sams and Robert Hudson. Based on the novel by P G Wodehouse and the play by P G Wodehouse and Ian Hay. Director: Rob Ashford. May 30-June 27, Festival Theatre. Rob Ashford directs and choreographs this charming new stage musical that brings together
a world-weary American composer, a beautiful and irrepressible English socialite, her fierce aunt and a host of other delightfully-eccentric characters. EDUCATING RITA by Willy Russell. Director: Michael Buffong. June 18July 25, Minerva Theatre. With Lenny Henry and Lashana Lynch. Lenny Henry makes his Chichester debut as world-weary lecturer Frank in Willy Russell’s touching and enduring comedy. Lashana Lynch also makes her Chichester debut as Rita. MACK & MABEL. Music and lyrics by Jerry Herman; book by Michael Stewart. Director: Jonathan Church. July 13-September 5, Festival Theatre. Cast features Michael Ball. Michael Ball returns to Chichester as Mack in this musical comedy that is both a poignant love story and tribute to the silent movie era. Jonathan Church directs this riveting story based on the true romance between Hollywood legends Mack Sennett and Mabel Normand. FOR SERVICES RENDERED by W Somerset Maugham. Director: Howard Davies July 31-September 5, Minerva Theatre. Written in 1932, this engrossing drama, directed by Howard Davies, confronts the damaging consequences of war, loss and trauma for one ordinary English family. RUNNING WILD by Michael Morpurgo in a new adaptation by Samuel Adamson August 2-16, Cass Sculpture Foundation. Director: Dale Rooks.
Chichester Festival Youth Theatre stage a brand-new adaptation of Michael Morpurgo’s thrilling story about the devastating Boxing Day tsunami and a young boy’s remarkable jungle adventure afterwards. September 10-October 10, Minerva Theatre. David Haig returns to Chichester in this drama based on the experiences of those taken hostage in Lebanon in the 1980s. A major season of three early plays by Anton Chekhov, staged together for the first time ever in adaptations by David Hare, directed by Jonathan Kent.
