The Rag Trade by Jonathan Crouch
You don’t get a full-blown folding roof, but then neither do you get the usual compromises in rear seat and luggage space - and there are no speed restrictions on soft top use. If you thought you could neither justify or afford a cabriolet, then this car aims to make you think again. Enginewise, there’s the petrol choice of a 3 cylinder 1.2 VTi unit, plus a 120bhp 1.6 VTi which also comes in 156bhp THP turbo form. There’s also a 1.6 HDi diesel. On paper, you might be tempted to view this car’s kind of folding soft top as little more than a giant sunroof, but in practice, it’s much more than that. True, you never get the full ‘wind in the hair’ feeling that you would in a classic conventional cabriolet lacking this Citroen’s fixed side panels but there’s quite enough exposure to the elements in the fully open position to give you that real cabrio feeling, though buffeting is reduced because you’re better hidden from the blustery conditions. My favourite feature though relates to the way - unique in my experience with
convertible cars - that this roof allows you to instantly react to the conditions you’re driving in. Press a little button on the overhead console and you can open or close the roof in just 16s at any speed up to 75mph. With the roof closed, refinement is near-on as good as it is in the fixed top DS3. You’d be forgiven for not realising this to be a Cabrio at first glance. After all, the profile of this model is identical to that of its fixed-top counterpart, which means you get the same cool ‘shark fin’ B-pillar, the same ‘floating’ two-tone roof and the same sculpted front end with its distinctive LED light signature. The soft top is electrically operated by a button on the overhead console that works to three main settings - ‘intermediate’, ‘horizontal’ and ‘total’ - all of which, impressively, are accessible at any speed up to 75mph. Prodding the button once will slide the canvas back so that it concertinas like a busker’s accordion above a rear screen which, if you continue to press the button, will hinge forward to lie on the parcel shelf, before the folded canvas sandwich motors back to take its place. The roof acrobatics take only 16s from start to finish and when the whole thing’s open, there’s a
pop-up wind deflector that springs out of the top roof rail to quell the worst of the turbulence. Of course, when you do have the roof down, you don’t want it to take up so much space at the back that there’s no room for people or packages. In this DS3 it doesn’t. Take rear cargo space - 245-litres in all, just 40-litres less than you’d get in the ordinary hatch version. Plus you can extend it by folding down the same 60/40 split-folding rear bench you’ll find on the DS3 hatch, revealing up to 980-litres.
Citroen DS3 Cabrio - NEW CAR REVIEW
Citroen’s DS3 Cabrio is anything but a conventional convertible - but then, that’s exactly why you might buy one.

Tour Guide by Andy Enright
Big companies often spend millions on research but are strangely deficient at actually listening to customers. Toyota is different. It recognised that the Auris needed a shot of personality and an injection of dynamic excellence and has sharpened up the way this car drives quite markedly. Therefore, you’d probably be surprised to hear that this car features softer suspension, but that’s only because the chassis is now so much stiffer and the suspension components so much lighter that you’ll now get a better ride whilst improving handling as well. Improvements have been made to the electric power steering: a more rigid steering column attachment ensures a linear steering feel; a new control unit suppresses changes in steering force to further improve the
linear performance; and a high gear ratio gives greater responsiveness. The result is steering that is more direct with better feedback and quicker turning, making the Auris a good deal more agile. Extensive advances in refinement measures mean that the new model is not only more comfortable, but also noticeably quieter. Extensive soundproofing in the engine bay, front wheel arches and dashboard has reduced engine and road noise intrusion in the cabin. The engine range comprises 98bhp 1.33-litre and 130bhp 1.6 petrol engines, an 89bhp 1.4 diesel and a 134bhp 1.8-litre petrol electric hybrid, the first such engine fitted to a compact estate. The 1.6 petrol is available with a Multidrive CVT gearbox as an option. Compact estates aren’t always the happiest of conversions from a styling perspective. The requirement to add length and glass to a car without changing its wheelbase usually makes the cars look lumpen and awkward but the Auris Touring Sports is a slick piece of penmanship. The rising beltline and sleek glasshouse make it look anything but a hatchback that’s being squired by a uPVC conservatory. In profile, it shares the hatchback’s steeply raked
windscreen, which flows into an extended roofline with aluminium roof rails and an integral rear spoiler. These days Toyota works to a philosophy called ‘Genchi Genbutsu’ which, roughly translated from Japanese, means ‘go see for yourself’. In other words, go and speak to owners in order to see how they use the car in real life. This has paid off in spades with the development of the latest Auris and this Touring Sports model in particular. It’s a car with a stronger focus on desirability and real-world utility. These two criteria have, in recent Toyota history, often been mutually exclusive insofar that in its quest to provide practical, reliable cars, Toyota had become a manufacturer of crushingly dull product. That looks like changing and fast. On the face of it, an Auris estate should seem a guaranteed cure for insomnia, but this car has something about it. Okay, so it’s not going to have the enthusiast press getting all excited, but here is a car many people would be delighted to have on their drive. Nothing about it suggests you’ve settled for a life of suburban mediocrity. Sometimes practical is good. And sometimes Toyota Aurises are good. Welcome to the happy part of that particular Venn diagram.
Toyota Auris Touring Sports - NEW CAR REVIEW
The Toyota Auris Touring Sports is a small estate that is a cut or two above the class norm. With a range of petrol, diesel and hybrid engines, a decent 530-litre boot that extends to 1,658-litres and an increased focus on styling and driving dynamics, here’s one car that deserves a place on your shortlist. The Auris has been rehabilitated.

Nissan LEAF range - NEW CAR REVIEW
6
NEWREG63
Take it or LEAF it by Andy Enright
The Nissan LEAF is a car that divides opinion. Some love this fully electric vehicle for its bold engineering and surprisingly enjoyable driving dynamics while most potential buyers just can’t make a case for it. The second generation model offers more real world range but it’ll remain a minority interest. Nissan’s engineers have finessed the damper settings to reduce float and deliver a more agile and dynamic drive without adversely affecting ride comfort. The steering system has been given a
touch more weight to provide steering feel more in tune with European tastes, while the performance of the brakes has been improved to make them more progressive in use, while also increasing the amount of energy recovered. Changes have also been made to the Eco driving mode. A ‘B’ setting on the transmission increases regenerative braking during deceleration, while a separate ‘Eco’ button on the steering wheel extends driving range by altering the throttle mapping to discourage rapid acceleration. The two systems can be operated independently of one another, unlike in the original LEAF. Although the Nissan LEAF doesn’t look too different from the outside, with a revised front grille being the main external differentiator, under the skin there’s been some quite fundamental improvements. The biggest technical change is a fully integrated powertrain that brings the charger assembly, inverter and the motor together for the first time. Now assembled together as a single stack, the powertrain is again based around a high-response 80kW AC synchronous motor powered by Nissan-designed 48-module compact lithium-ion batteries, mounted underneath
the cabin area to lower the centre of gravity for optimum handling. Nissan has worked hard to improve the LEAF and has clearly listened to customer feedback. Range has been improved, equipment levels bumped up, driving manners have been sharpened still further and practicality is transformed. The two issues that prevent mass take up haven’t been addressed though. The car is still too expensive and the range is still too small for most buyers, many of whom are unwilling to put up with the prospect of being stuck somewhere for hours should they be able to find a charging point. Cars are supposed to be an enabler. Few see the LEAF in this way. I’d like to be in a position where a Nissan LEAF could work for me because they are just lovely things. They’re good to drive, would save me a fortune in petrol station pasties and there’s the fact that Nissan put its money where its mouth was in developing the car. All the good will in the world isn’t going to help though. Nissan needs hard orders and as worthy as these changes to the LEAF are, they’re not going to swing its fortunes about, in this country at least. More’s the pity.

NOTE Perfect? by Andy Enright
Nissan is a company renowned for its engineering innovation but sometimes that high-tech approach fails to filter down to its more everyday models. Not this time. Take the petrol engines in this Note. The entrylevel is a three-cylinder 1.2-litre 80PS unit. So far so unexciting. But you can also buy a version of this engine, the 1.2-litre DIG-S, with a supercharger that boosts power to 98PS. Ah, but aren’t superchargers notoriously fuel-hungry things, running all the time whether you need them or not? Most are but not this one which uses a clutch pack to disengage the supercharger when running at low speeds. This engine also uses the Miller Cycle, a system which keeps the inlet valves open longer to help efficiency, as is also offered with CVT automatic transmission. Should you prefer, you can also get a 90PS 1.5-litre diesel engine.
The Note has been extensively developed in Europe to offer a driving experience that’s right for our road conditions. With a distinct set-up from that of the Japanese and US market, the European version has unique steering, suspension and chassis settings. The 1.2-litre DIG-S model has further dynamic tweaks for an even more engaging driving experience. The old Note was a neatly styled if somewhat anonymous-looking thing. The latest car has a good deal more styling going on and a more expensive look and feel, both in and out. You’ll spot the chrome grille that seems to take a bite out of each headlight, the nicely chamfered wheel arches and the detail lines in the flanks that help avoid a slab-sided look. The Note marks an intriguing change of direction from Nissan. Back in the days when every major car manufacturer followed the rigid guidelines of passenger car sizing, Nissan was the first to rebel. It ditched cars like the Almera and the Primera in favour of a range that majored on sports utility vehicles and people carriers, later developing the crossover theme. Now with this latest Note, it finds itself regressing back to the mainstream with a straightforward
supermini design. Is that a bad thing? Probably not. The convergent development of small MPVs and family hatchbacks has blurred the boundaries and the result is that these categories become increasingly ill-defined. The second generation Note instead concentrates on the things that really matter to the end customer. That means better fuel economy, an interior that feels better built, more space, increased efficiency and classier exterior styling. Nissan has taken a small gamble here, but one that looks worthwhile.
Nissan Note - NEW CAR REVIEW
The Nissan Note moves towards the conventional supermini in second generation guise but it’s still set to be a family favourite. Better quality, sharper styling, interesting safety gear and a fascinating three-cylinder engine with a decoupling supercharger are the order of the day here.

It’s All About YOU at Hendy
The group has kept up with a constantly changing marketplace and demands, and in offering the best service and attention to its customers, the Group ensures they’ll be back again in the future. All of that means you can buy from Hendy with confidence. But what’s on offer? With five manufacturer franchises to choose from (Ford, Kia, Mazda, Honda and Iveco) there are plenty of options. One that stands out is the latest Ford Fiesta Zetec. Month after month and year after year, the Ford Fiesta remains Britain’s bestselling car. But the Fiesta’s success is no mystery. After years of refinement and development, Ford has produced a hatchback of unequalled ability, making the Fiesta as good as possible in every area instead of focusing on one or two. The result is a car that is always impressive. First, the handling. Like most modern Fords, it’s sharp, with fun and feeling that most drivers will love in the town and country alike. And though there’s plenty of feedback, the Fiesta is always comfortable, soaking up unpleasant roads without transmitting too much to the cabin. And speaking of the cabin, there’s another thing Ford did right. The modern design is never dull, with an eye-catching centre console, deep gauges and LCD display screen. In
keeping with the Fiesta’s spirited drive, the driving position and seats are well placed, and the steering wheel offers rake and tilt adjustments for perfect comfort. While nothing is as fun as a Fiesta, entertainment can’t always determine our choices. There are other cars out there from manufacturers with a strong history of entertaining hatchbacks, Honda being the first to come to mind. Their latest effort, the second-generation Jazz, also has a history as a bestseller, taking the crown in Honda’s native Japan for many years and has sold over 250,000 in the UK to date. The Honda Jazz was designed to be the most spacious and versatile car in its class, and Honda have succeeded. The Jazz is as practical as a much larger car. With just one button press, the rear seats fold flat in one movement. Even with them up, the 399-litre boot rivals larger cars and comes with a boot organisation system in two layers, one for odds and ends to stay secure and not roll around and the other for larger items. The high roof also helps with outsize loads. Cost of ownership is another Jazz strength. The 1.2 S is the least expensive model in the range, and with low fuel consumption of 53.3mpg and emissions of 123g/km, it remains inexpensive to run. Honda’s excellent reliability put the Jazz at the top of its class, and 23rd out of the top 100 cars ranked in the 2013 Driver Power survey. However, there remains another challenger, this time from Korea. The all-new Kia Cee’d from Kia has made leaps and bounds in quality, design and performance over the last decade. The latest Cee’d is a world-class hatchback, wearing styling that
betters many of its rivals. The Kia Cee’d sets its sights on being the best-value car in its class. In practice, this means a roomy cabin with plenty of space and generous equipment, high quality and affordable running costs. The smart looks are just a preview of the quality on display, with a stylish cabin fitted with soft-touch plastics and trademark Kia confidence in its build, backed by a seven-year 100,000mile warranty. The 1.4-litre CRDi engine is a strong mix of performance and economy, offering a stellar 68.9mpg and just 109g/km of CO2, slipping the Cee’d into a low tax band. Standard ‘1’ trim includes air conditioning, Bluetooth, fog lights, USB and AUX inputs, front electric windows, heated electric door mirrors, Electronic Stability Control and Vehicle Stability Management, 5-star Euro NCAP ratings and more. There’s nothing that offers more for the price. Fortunately, you don’t have to choose right now. The complete range of Honda, Kia and Ford cars are available to test drive at Hendy every day of the week.

Get on UP! by Andy Enright it’s not trying to trick you into liking it with gimmickry. You’ll respect the way it works. How German. How very Volkswagen.
the height is dropped by 13mm to 1,454mm all this proving that the Polo’s more dynamic stance isn’t merely a stylist’s illusion.
Volkswagen Polo
look promising. In short it’s a Golf. A more polished, smarter Golf, but still a Golf. Reassuringly so.
Vauxhall Golf
At just 3.54 metres in length, 1.64 metres in width and 1.48 metres in height, the Up is one of the smallest four-seater cars citycars, measuring a full 11cm shorter than a rival Fiat Panda. Clever packaging means that
interior space is maximised. The wheels are teased out to each corner, with the wheelbase of 2.42m being one of the biggest in class, combined with that compact engine and lateral radiator allowing the front bulkhead and crash structures to shift forward too. There’s decent room at the back too, with a 251-litre boot being a tad bigger than is typical in this class. It feels like a properly grown up and rather serious little car. It also feels extremely well-judged. It’s clear that money has been spent on the bits that matter. The seats are comfortable, the control weights are just so and the cabin ergonomics just work. Other cars might go a little further in the styling department, but the Up’s appeal is that
Volkswagen Up!
I’ll go out on a limb here and say that Volkswagen will break its run of city car duds with the Up. It’s well-priced, offers plenty of space, a decent enough drive and looks the part. Super-low running costs and a decent breadth of customer choice also score in its favour. It won’t have things all its own way in this sector as the competition just gets more intense with each passing year, but it’s a very impressive turn.
Capturing POLO position by Steve Walker The fifth generation Polo is here but what can we expect from the latest iteration of Volkswagen’s flagship small car product? The answer will surprise nobody that has followed the fortunes of VW over recent years and it’s unlikely to please those who like their superminis with a bit of passion, flair and charisma. The fifth Polo is a lot like the four that went before it: solid, stylish, excellently engineered and looking a lot like a little Golf. It also sets lofty standards that only the cream of the current supermini crop can hope to beat. Three and five-door Polo models follow on with the styling theme debuted on the Scirocco coupe and subsequently adapted
Seven Up
for the MkVI Golf. The thin grille serves to visually widen and lower the car, giving it a more planted and sporty appearance. The lines are typical Volkswagen, clean and unfussy, the design team led by Walter De Silva playing upon VW’s classless image and steering well clear of the gimmicky styling devices we see elsewhere in the market. There’s certainly nothing to offend traditional Polo customers but compared to some of the sector’s more adventurous styling efforts, the overall look might be too reserved for some tastes. The car certainly looks compact and nuggety but it’s also substantially larger than it predecessor. The track has been widened front and rear, the overall width is up by 32mm to 1,682mm and

The Volkswagen Golf Mk 7 is an interesting vehicle and it’s not always quite as up-front as you expect. The lower specification torsion-beam suspension that’s fitted to less powerful models is certainly a step backwards but it’s one that many buyers shopping through the lower order trim levels won’t care very much about. In most other areas, the Golf forges inexorably onwards. Less weight and more space is always a good combination and a number of efficiency measures have brought the petrol engines, especially the excellent 1.4 TSI with Active Cylinder Technology, back into sharp relevance.
There are a number of engines to choose from, the petrol units comprising a fourcylinder 1.2-litre TSI unit producing 85 PS, a 1.2-litre TSI with 105 PS, a 1.4-litre TSI 122 PS motor and the very clever 1.4-litre TSI 140 PS engine with Active Cylinder Technology. This powerplant can deactivate the central two cylinders under modest throttle loads in order to improve economy. This car’s clever MQB modular chassis helps to pare weight right back. In fact it’s not significantly weightier than a Mk 4, despite boasting massively improved safety features and more interior equipment. The styling is evolutionary but includes a number of interesting details, cabin quality is well up to par and residual values

Vauxhall Slings the setquare by Andy Enright fun to drive, economical and smartly styled. It’s not the most fashionable urban scoot out there - but it could very well be the best.
this case at least, the British public know a good thing when they see one. The old ‘V-grille’ has been replaced by a signature chrome bar that stretches across the entire front grille, carrying the Griffin badge, while a re-styled front bumper gives the Corsa a friendlier look. A new set of exterior colours is offered and the wheels have also come in for a redesign. With solid build quality, sharpened driving manners, a fresher face and some of the most economical engines on offer anywhere, the Corsa more than stacks up. Factor in prices which usually undercut far less sturdy opposition and it’s a small car that needs no excuses. Some will baulk at buying a car that’s quite so ubiquitous
but, on occasion, it’s best to shelve the badge snobbery and just reward a very good product.
Vauxhall Corsa
Although Vauxhall are once again sharing technology with Suzuki, this time round things are being worked on a rather different basis. This is no outdated handme-down, the latest Agila sporting a bang up to date chassis and three engines that
are certainly class competitive at the very least. The line up opens with a 64bhp 1.0-litre three-cylinder petrol unit and continues with a punchier 85bhp 1.2-litre powerplant. This engine is also offered with the option of an automatic gearbox which would certainly take the strain out of nose-to-tail city traffic. The interior design definitely feels more Suzuki than Vauxhall and this is no bad thing with the Japanese manufacturer having built a strong reputation for the simplicity and strength of its cabins. There’s plenty of storage space and the pod rev-counter on top of the dash is a nice touch. In summary, as long as you get the right variant at the right price, this is everything an urban runabout should be. Cheap to run,
Vauxhall Agila
The demands placed on city cars grow ever more exacting with each passing generation. Time was when a city car needed only to be small, economical and cheap to insure. No longer. The latest Vauxhall Agila must also satisfy those demanding better safety, higher quality, lower emissions and classier styling. First impressions look good. On paper, it looks equipped to tick all those boxes.
Tour de CORSA The Vauxhall Corsa offers a feeling of quality and solidity that’s unparalleled in the supermini class at any price. Couple that with refreshed styling, a range of economical engines and a much improved ride and handling setup and you have a very convincing proposition. Small wonder sales remain strong. Since its introduction, Vauxhall has continuously fettled and polished the Corsa, turning it from a good car into an outstanding one. Those not acquainted with its talents may well not recognise quite how far Vauxhall has come in developing it and unwittingly choose something inferior instead, but the sales figures suggest that, in
Smarter, sleeker but very much ASTRA
The Astra Energy is available as a 5-door hatchback with space and comfort for five and excellent interior ergonomics. And with a choice of multi-valve petrol or diesel engines it drives as dynamically as it looks. Here we concentrate on the Astra Energy which is priced from £17,555. Specify a Volkswagen Golf up to this Astra’s trim
level and you’d be looking at a vastly more expensive car. We’re not just talking about niceties either. Add air conditioning and alloy wheels to a Golf and it’ll tack more than £1,500 onto the price of the Volkswagen. Even when residual factors are taken into account, it’s not difficult to see where the smart money goes. Kit like curtain airbags, body coloured addenda and audio controls on the steering wheel isn’t universally common at this price point. The Astra 1.4-litre Energy, is a car all but the badge snobs should put on their very short list. Excellent build quality, neat design, a refined and well mannered powerplant, keen pricing and excellent vehicle dynamics all come to the fore. Some may write the car
off due to its perceived proximity in price to some premium rivals but the Astra offers a lot more equipment and is built to last.
Vauxhall Astra Energy
Sleek, stylish and dynamic the Astra Energy gives you fantastic features including stunning new alloy wheels, Logic cloth trim, Bluetooth mobile phone facility and USB connection with iPod control, cruise control and air conditioning as standard. It invites you to discover how much more a car can offer.
