Xavier Rudd

Australian legend Xavier Rudd is making just two stops in the UK this summer – one in London and the other at Southsea’s Wedgewood Rooms on Thursday June 25. The multiinstrumentalist made his name by taking his oneman band act (surrounded by an array of instruments) around festivals in his native Australia, as well as America and Europe. A long-time political campaigner, particularly on environmentalism and the rights of the Aboriginal people, he has included both Australian and Canadian Aboriginal vocals in his recordings. Now, he has recruited eight musicians from around the world (from Australia, South Africa, Samoa, Germany and Papua New Guinea) to join him on stage as he tours as Xavier Rudd and the United Nations to plug his latest album, Nanna. Barry Rutter caught up with him for a chat before he arrived in the UK.
Hi Xavier, tell us about your didgeridoos… Didgeridoo is the name given to it by Dutch settlers. I’ve been playing yidaki for about 25 years. I think I was about 10 when I started circular breathing. I just taught myself. It’s part of my culture…it’s the oldest instrument on the planet! You’re known for your one-man band act - with so many instruments on stage, do you ever get confused or go wrong? No, not really. It takes a lot of concentration sometimes but I seem to pull it off.
Knowing that he mixed all those classic Bob Marley tracks that I love was such a huge honour, I spun out every time I spoke to him, even though I couldn’t understand a word he said, his accent was so thick. You have championed the rights of Aboriginal people. Do you have a lot of fans among Aborigines or do they think ‘Who’s this white guy playing our instruments?’ I am part Aboriginal, I don’t think judgement should be made on the colour of people’s skin.
Now you’re touring with the United Nations – how did the band come together? It was something that I’ve wanted to put together for a long time. I was patient with the concept, and this year I put it out to the universe and it all came together very organically. The right people presented and away we went!
We haven’t seen too much of you in the UK – is that about to change? There’s lots of places to get to in the world and so little time, but hopefully, yes! You’ve never shied away from being political – do you think more bands/ singers should speak out? Yes it could be helpful if they felt that way inclined, but ultimately it’s up to them.
Everyone on this record is amazing musically but also carry a huge story of spirit with them. The band are symbolic of the message that all people of the world can come together and return to spirit, respect the ancient ways, and protect the Earth and the very essence of creation.
Do you think there are lessons to be learned in Europe for dealing with/helping the refugees crossing the Mediterranean from the way Australia deals with seaborne migrants? I’m not sure, I’d have to look into that one.
Do you prefer playing with a band after years of solo work? I’m enjoying playing with the band at the moment because it’s a new project - but I like everything I do. I’m having a ball – there are great musicians laying it down all around me and I’m so stoked to be a part of it. Tell us about Nanna – how does it differ from previous albums? It’s a nine-piece band, so that’s the main difference. It’s also a dedicatedreggae project, which is something I’ve always wanted to do.
You were once shortlisted for PETA’s World’s Sexiest Vegetarian Award – were you upset you didn’t win? Ha ha, not at all. I heard about it through word of mouth only after the fact, not sure they got it right in the nomination! Our very own Morrissey insists that all venues on his tour are meat-free and has been known to storm off stage if it doesn’t happen – would you go that far? I don’t judge people for eating meat, it’s a natural thing to do, a natural part of the human diet. But I don’t agree with mass production of meat. I think you’ve also been involved with the Sea Shepherd organisation – what appeals to you about their work? It’s the greatest front line ocean action team that our world’s ever seen.
How did the recently deceased Errol Brown come to be your producer? He didn’t produce the record actually, he mixed it! It came from initially meeting with Steven Marley, Bob Marley’s son, who suggested I work with Errol on the mixing because he had worked with his father.

TIM BIRKBECK tells us what gigs are a must-see this June. Bryan Ferry Former Roxy Music frontman Bryan Ferry has been touring his solo act around the globe for many years. This latest tour will see Ferry display a range of different songs spanning across his illustrious 40 plus year career on the stage. The announcement of this tour was due to high demand after the release of the rockers newest album ‘Avonmore’ which has been met with huge critical acclaim. For a night full of nostalgia go see Bryan Ferry at the Portsmouth Guildhall on June 5. Tickets range from £38.50 - £71.50 from portsmouthguildhall.org.uk or call 0844 847 2362. Madness Ska legends Madness are set to be the first band ever to perform at Fratton Park as part of their record breaking ‘Grandslam Tour’. Suggs and the gang are undertaking the largest open air rock tour of the summer, with more than 4,000 people expected to witness the band play their extensive back catalogue. From previous visits to the city Madness has always been one of
the must supported bands in Portsmouth and this historic moment is one not to be missed. Madness will be stepping out onto the Fratton Park pitch on June 6. Tickets cost £120 from portsmouthfc.co.uk or call (023) 9277 8559.

Piney Gir The American turned Londoner Piney Gir has seen her journey go down the path of almost every genre of music before deciding she was a bit of ‘everything’. Piney Gir believes that her brand of music doesn’t need to be categorised and maybe that not being pinned down to one genre could be her niche. The artist herself said: ‘If you appreciate many types of music, why only limit yourself to one thing all the time? So much inspires me.’ So how would you describe Piney Gir to someone who has never heard her? She definitely has a sound blending together indie-pop riffs with Piney’s calming rhythmic voice. After playing the prestigious South By South West festival on her first
ever solo US tour, Piney has built up a hardened, loyal fan base and it appears the sky is the limit. Catch Piney Gir show off her unique sound at the Eastney Cellars on June 12. Tickets cost £7 advance from thecellars.co.uk or call (023) 9282 6249. Gaz Brookfield Acoustic musician from Bristol, Gaz Brookfield has broken records wherever he has gone since winning the Acoustic magazine singer songwriter of the year back in 2010. with the Levellers he collected a record number of sales for a supporting act on any O2 tour. He has been compared to the likes of Billy Bragg and Frank Turner and his sometimes tongue and cheek style of song writing comes across as very endearing and relatable. See for yourself when Gaz Brookfiled plays at the Eastney Cellars on June 16. Tickets cost £7 advance from thecellars.co.uk or call (023) 9282 6249. Xavier Rudd and the United Nations Following the release of his latest album ‘Nanna’, Australian multiinstrumentalist Xavier Rudd has said he is just as excited as any of his fans to bring the new album to shores of the UK. Tagging along is his army of musicians from all four corners of the globe, proving that music can span across any language. Rudd’s music is a creative way of sharing a message that all people of the world can come together and be involved in a spiritual experience. Rudd’s message is to respect the ancient ways, protect the Earth and the very essence of creation. To add a new dimension to his unique, spiritual blend of music, Rudd has managed to get the smooth Jamaican tones of Errol Brown enlisted on the new album and has certainly opened up his music to whole new audience. You can see Xavier Rudd and The United Nations perform tracks from the album Nanna at the Wedgewood rooms on June 25. Tickets cost £15 from wedgewood-rooms.co.uk or call (023) 9286 3911. Los Pacaminos Fronted by one of the UK’s most loved vocalists, Paul Young, Los Pacaminos
brings together seven like minded men who just wanted to share in their love of Tex-Mex Americana music. Paul is not the only well known face in the group as it brings together some of the most successful UK musicians in a variety of roles. But the factor that ties them all together is that they have all played in a band with Paul throughout the 80s and 90s. Los Pacaminos bring together a mix of Mariachi styles blended in with Rock ‘n’ Roll Blues. The seven piece may have a wealth of experience behind them but they still know how to enjoy themselves on stage, even inviting members of the audience on stage to throw back some tequila. Get down to the Eastney Cellars and join in the party on June 20. Tickets cost £16.50 in advance from thecellars.co.uk or call (023) 9282 6249.

GUIDE 2 COMEDY
Sharp observation, dry wit and a gentle and confident rapport are just a few things John Mann has been praised for during his time as a stand up comedian. DANIELLE BUTLER spoke to him about his plans for the summer. It is clear that John has a kind of relatability and ease that makes him a delight to talk to, which translates seamlessly on to the stage. Whether he is discussing the senile antics of senior citizens or giving handy hints to aid successful shoplifting, John’s gentle and honest delivery makes him one of the most enjoyable comedians on the circuit today. John, who now lives between Essex and Hertfordshire, knows Portsmouth well, from his time spent as the resident compere at The Wedgewood Rooms 18 years ago. He says: ‘It’s a brilliant venue. One of my top five in the country for comedy and music. It’s just completely there for the local music industry.’ Before making the move in to comedy, John was a sound engineer, with his first comedy gig coming about completely by chance. John was working as a sound engineer at independent live music venue The Square in Harlow when two of the booked comedy acts failed to appear. At the last minute, John stood in and offered to appear. He says: ‘ I did my first gig with 15 minutes notice. It was fun to do and I thought, actually, this is quite good. Once you get in to it you can’t let go.’ John appears regularly at most of the UK’s top comedy clubs and has performed extensively in clubs and at festivals around the world. He is a popular compere on the UK comedy circuit and appears regularly at Jongleurs clubs nationwide. He has toured with Phill Jupitus and Lenny Henry and has appeared on numerous TV comedy shows. He was the first stand-up comedian to act as warm-up
for music show The White Room. With all this under his belt, it’s difficult for him to choose a career highlight. He says: ‘I’ve done so many really, really good gigs. One good one was when I compered the Reading festival, which I’ve done a couple of times. I had to get 2,500 people to sit down before Eddie Izzard would come on.’ Inevitably there are big differences between gigs, and playing Jongleurs Comedy Club in Portsmouth is a world away from standing in front of thousands of people at Reading.

write a book for a while, so maybe this summer will be the summer.’ John Mann will be performing at Jongleurs Comedy Club, Portsmouth on Saturday, June 13, doors 5pm, show starts at 8pm. Tickets cost £15. Go to jongleurs.com or call 08700 111 960.
John says: ‘The biggest difference is that at a big gig the people nearest to you are still a long way away. Comedy does belong up close, if you can’t see the face of the person you’re supposed to be watching without a big screen then something is missing.’ So, what makes such a successful comic laugh? John cites his dog Ted as number one on the list: ‘I spend a lot of time with him, he’s a labradoodle and an idiot. Alan Davies also makes me laugh, even back when he was in Jonathon Creek. Also, watching people fall over. It’s beautfiful.’ John has an impressive background in writing for television, having written for Harry Enfield, Paul O’Grady, Gina Yashere and Jasper Carrott, and was a writer for both The 11 O’Clock Show and The Big Breakfast. He says: ‘I like writing with a pen and paper, so I used to go outside in the sunshine with a cup of tea, write it like that and then go and type it up.’ As for the future, John looks forward to more gigging. He says: ‘There’s nothing big in the pipeline at the moment, just gigging. I write a newspaper column for the Bishop’s Stortford Observer and I might put those together for publication as a book. I’ve been meaning to

Spy
Box office bonanza Want to know what to watch at the cinema? STEVEN GALLOWAY reveals the biggest movies for the month ahead. Spy (15) They say to make hay while the sun shines, and since her breakthrough role in 2011’s Bridesmaids, actress Melissa McCarthy has been hard at work on a string of comic outings, of which this espionage-based romp is just the latest. Directed by Paul Feig, the man behind the clapperboard on Bridesmaids, Spy sees McCarthy taking the role of CIA analyst Susan, who is quite happy to remain the unsung heroine behind a desk, until Jude Law’s top agent goes AWOL and fellow spook Jason Statham finds his cover blown. In a not-atall predictable twist Susan winds up going undercover herself; infiltrating the shady world of dastardly arms dealer Rayna Boyanov (Rose Byrne) and working to prevent a worldwide catastrophe, of course. Despite its fairly standard plot, this caper has had some pretty good reviews from the states so

far; in fact, I’m unable to spy a bad one… Released June 5 Jurassic World (TBC) Rather fittingly for a film series which featured the resurrection of giant, lumbering beasts, 1993 dino-hit Jurassic Park has been deemed ripe for a resurrection itself, with this fourth instalment arriving 14 years after the third. If you’re familiar with the series you’ll know the plots can usually be summarised as ‘dinosaurs get loose, carnage ensues,’ and Jurassic World doesn’t deviate far from this formula. In fact, it doesn’t deviate at all, with prehistoric-theme park boss Bryce Dallas Howard welcoming her two young nephews to stay at just the time a new hybrid beast decides go rogue. Chris Pratt co-stars as Owen Grady, the Velociraptor trainer (good job title) who is tasked with tracking down the rampaging creature, while B.D Wong is the only actor to reprise his role from the original series, reappearing as geneticist Henry Wu, and Colin Trevorrow directs. Released June 12 Queen and Country (TBC) 82-year-old director John Boorman,
perhaps best known for his classic 1970s hillbilly horror Deliverance, continues to work despite being at an age where most of us would opt for a comfy sofa over the director’s chair. His latest offering is a belated sequel to his 1987 WW2 comedy-drama Hope and Glory, which was nominated for numerous Oscars, and follows that film’s protagonist Billy Rohan who is now a young army recruit in training for the Korean War. Billy (played by movie newcomer Callum Turner) and fellow trainee Percy (Caleb Landry Jones) find themselves in a battle of wits with their superiors, including David Thewlis and Richard E. Grant. Reviews have been mostly kind towards this BBC-produced, autobiographical slice of post-war nostalgia which also stars Vanessa Kirby and Tamsin Egerton. Released June 12 Entourage (TBC) The long-running HBO TV show Entourage has gained plenty of fans over its eight-seasons, enough to warrant this big-screen outing which picks up where the series left off; with Adrian Grenier reprising his role as movie star Vincent Chase and Jeremy Piven again present as his loudmouth agent Ari Gold, who has just been
GUIDE 2 CINEMA promoted to studio boss. Chase’s boyhood New York pals Eric, Turtle and Johnny (Kevin Connolly, Jerry Ferrara and Kevin Dillon respectively) are also on hand, making up his loyal ‘entourage’ as he deals with the dog-eatdog world of Hollywood while financing his directorial debut with backing from Billy Bob Thornton’s Texan billionaire. Based on the early career of producer Mark Wahlberg, this comedy is sure to be hotly anticipated by fans of the small-screen version. Released June 19 Mr Holmes (TBC) Apparently Sherlock Holmes is the most portrayed character in movie history, with over 70 different actors playing the celebrated sleuth in 200-plus films. The latest member of this not-so-exclusive club is Sir Ian ‘you shall not pass’ McKellen, who stars here as a 93-yearold Holmes in rural retirement with only his housekeeper (Laura Linney), her son Roger and his bees for company. Told partly in flashbacks to his Baker Street glory days, Mr Holmes follows its nonagenarian namesake as he enlists the help of young Roger (Milo Parker) to grapple with the one unsolved mystery that forced him into retirement. Based on Mitch Cullin’s novel A Slight Trick of the Mind, this detective drama has had some pretty glowing reviews from across the pond. Do all signs point towards a summer box-office hit? I think it’s customary to say elementary at this point… Released June 19 Minions
Minions (TBC) Stars of the Despicable Me films – and now staples of arcade crane-machines and fast-food kids’ meals– the titular minions are small, yellow creatures whose sole purpose throughout history has been to do the bidding of a series of evil overlords including Genghis Khan and Napoleon. Set in the 1960s, this animated prequel to the Despicable Me romps sees the custard-hued hordes exiled in Antarctica having survived the demise of all of their leaders. Three of their number; Kevin, Stuart and Bob, hatch a plan to find potential new boss Scarlett Overkill (Sandra Bullock), embarking on a journey which takes them through 1960s New York to swinging London and soon turns into a mission to save minionkind from extinction. Director Pierre Coffin also voices the three minions while Michael Keaton and Steve Coogan make up the supporting cast in a family-friendly outing which will probably make as much from merchandising as movie tickets. Released June 26

who becomes comically entangled with Owen Wilson’s director and Aniston’s therapist amongst others. Kathryn Hahn, Rhys Ifans and Will Forte also appear in Bogdanovich’s first big-screen outing for a while, which takes its inspiration from the 1930s ‘screwball’ comedies produced by the likes of Ernst Lubitsch and Frank Capra. Early reviews suggest this one has enough laughs to live up to such lofty comparisons. Released June 26
Spotlight on: Sandra Bullock
She’s Funny That Way (TBC) For anyone making a rom-com, there are always two things at the top of the to-do list: book a studio and phone Jennifer Aniston – and not necessarily in that order. True to form the reliable ex-friend is present in this ensemble affair from veteran director Peter Bogdanovich (The Last Picture Show, Paper Moon), in which Imogen Poots stars as a hooker turned Broadway star Born in suburban Washington, D.C to an American father and German mother, Sandra followed her military family to Nuremberg where she spent 12 years of her youth, growing up speaking German, before moving back to the states and launching an acting career which began at university. A breakthrough leading role in 1994 public-transport thriller Speed brought her big-time fame, which was consolidated with successes in While You Were Sleeping and Miss Congeniality. Critical acclaim arrived with 2004’s Crash and 2009’s The Blind Side, with an Oscar for Best Actress greeting her leading role in the latter, although the nautical follow-up to Speed is best forgotten. Known by the stateside media as ‘America’s Sweetheart’ thanks to her unpretentious image, Bullock divorced TV host Jesse James in 2010 and has an adopted son, Louis.

For ten days at the end of June, the Portsmouth Festivities aims to capture your imaginations, celebrate diversity and explore Portsmouth’s amazing heritage – CRAIG TILLEY finds out more. Now running for the sixteenth year, the Portsmouth Festivities features a diverse range of artists and activities housed in a variety of distinctive venues around the city. Now in its sixteenth year, the festival has built a reputation around the country. This year, Portsmouth Festivities general manager Erica Smith hopes they can continue to reach out to people to get involved in the festivities. She says: ‘What we try to do is have a mix of different events for people who wouldn’t normally come to festivals. A good example of that would be our Peatbog Faeries night on the HMS Warrior, a big Celtic folk night. ‘There are lots of other festivals in Portsmouth, such as Victorious. But what makes us different is that we’re a festival that covers all the art forms. We’re not just about having big bands play, we’re about free events, things for families and things for children. ‘It’s about something that’s a bit different, it’s bringing culture into Portsmouth and getting people engaged in events that they wouldn’t normally do over ten days.’ The festivities include a variety of amazing performances and cultural activities that range from music,

theatre and dance, literature and film. Standout acts include dance group The Seafarers, internationally renowned a cappella superstars The Swingle Singers and author Andy Mulligan. Erica says: ‘Our vision is to provide high quality cultural activities and performance events to capture the imagination and reflect on the heritage and the value of Portsmouth. ‘There is so much for everyone as we’ve got things happening everyday with a total of 94 events across the ten days.
Not all of us like specific genres. People like different art forms, so there is something for everybody. Not everybody is into music and we forget that. Some people like going to spoken word talks and seeing famous authors, for example, so we’re all about providing quality events that aren’t currently happening in Portsmouth that reflect its cultural value as a city.’ The Portsmouth Festivities runs from June 19-28. Staying In For the perfect night in trust Guide 2 to give you the latest on games, books, DVDs and music.
planning to murder his only friend. He invites her round to the flat he shares with his aunt, strangles her, stabs her 37 times, stuffs her head-first into the washing machine, and goes on the run. Easily outsmarting the authorities and evading capture, his lust for danger soon takes hold again. He tips off the police as to his whereabouts, and a game of cat and mouse begins. The police still can’t catch him, so he gives himself up. As the remorseless student’s trial begins, we slowly learn his psychological back story. Run, Ride, Sink Or Swim: A Year In The Exhilarating World Of Women’s Triathlon by Lucy Fry is published in paperback by Faber & Faber, priced £14.99 (ebook £8.54). In her first ever book, freelance journalist Fry recounts her adventures (and occasional tears and frustrations) as a rookie tri-athlete. She stars - like many fitness fans before her - as a curious newbie tempted by the buzz of a challenge and keen to explore what it is about the sport that gets people so hooked, but is quickly plunging into a whole new world of increasingly complex training and nutrition plans and emotions, as triathlon’s powerful hold intensifies. Of course, triathlon is the core theme, but this is a story about so much more than swimming, running, cycling and personal bests - it’s about that very human thing of being drawn to a challenge, the joy and pressures of rising to it and lessons learned along the way.

GUIDE 2 STAYING IN
MUSIC Chastity Belt Time To Go Home Look elsewhere for your conformity. This Seattle band, four women in their mid-twenties who met at college and started up Chastity Belt as a campus joke, are wonderfully wayward, sharp-tongued and prepared to fight for the right to party on their modern feminist terms. The stand-out track on the quartet’s second album is titled Cool Slut, a woozy sub-three minute hymn to the pleasures of promiscuity, where singer Julia Shapiro preaches: “To all
the girls in the world, trying to take off their shirts/ Ladies it’s ok - it’s ok to be slutty.” Guitarist Lydia Lund drips postpunk, reverb-heavy clanging guitar into an intoxicating potion; Shapiro bemoans “just another man trying to teach me something” on Drone. Time To Go Home is both arresting and invigorating from start to finish. Be in no doubt, Chastity Belt are making a strong case for being the most important band to emerge from Washington state’s Emerald City since Nirvana. Snoop Dogg Bush Having changed his name to Snoop Lion for his last album 2013’s Reincarnated, the Gin And Juice rapper is back in his Snoop Dogg moniker for his 13th album. Bush, with Pharrell Williams on production duties, has a funkier and lighter feel to his previous albums, opening with the chilled-out and mellow California Roll featuring Stevie Wonder, one of the album’s best tracks. Awake has a catchy chorus and melody that’s sure to get the listener singing along, while Peaches N Cream features Charlie Wilson and the punchy Run Away, with its deep funky beats, features Gwen Stefani. But Snoop saves the best for last with closing track I’m Ya Dogg, with man of the moment Kendrick Lamar and Rick Ross.

Foxcatcher Cert 15, 134 mins, Entertainment One, DVD £19.99/Blu-ray £24.99 Philanthropist and wrestling enthusiast John Eleuthere du Pont (Steve Carell) is desperate to win the love and respect of his elderly mother, Jean (Vanessa Redgrave), a successful horse trainer. So he establishes a world class wrestling facility at his sprawling Foxcatcher Farm on the outskirts of Philadelphia and recruits Olympic champion Mark Schultz (Channing Tatum) to spearhead his stable of talented athletes. At first, the relationship between du Pont and Schultz is strong, like a surrogate father and son, but fissures eventually appear. “You ungrateful ape!” barks du Pont to his brooding protege. The millionaire hires Schultz’s brother, fellow Olympic champion Dave (Mark Ruffalo), to restore the lustre of the Foxcatcher brand. Dave moves onto the estate with his wife Nancy (Sienna Miller) and family. Jealousy, paranoia and sibling rivalry poison personal ties, culminating in a senseless act of violence.

Many musicians say that it has always been their dream to play music, and will do whatever it takes to make this goal become a reality. TIM BIRKBECK talks to S1mple. So it is refreshing to hear when an artist just stumbles across a passion for music and rides the wave to see where it takes them. This is exactly what happened for Southsea based urban poet, S1mple, which stands for Some 1 making peoples lives easier. After spending seven summers at a voluntary camp in America called Camp Nor’wester, 28 year-old Mark Ruddock discovered he had the confidence to get up in front of people and perform. It was one fateful night at the camp back in 2010 when S1mple was born. ‘They did this performance every Sunday night, where they encouraged staff and children to get up and perform for a minute,’ said S1mple. ‘I will always remember there was one girl who had a chipmunk laugh, who would get on stage do her laugh for 10 seconds then walk off. ‘I began experimenting with rapping at the camp and this was the very first time I performed in front of people. ‘When I got back to the UK I thought I’d give it a shot and I started piggy backing off bands in the city, doing the odd verse in their sets.’ After discovering that he had an ear for creating a rap, the 28 year-old set about putting himself out and about, creating the S1mple music brand. It could have been a different story
for the rapper, whose dream it was to join the Royal Marines. After failing to get in due to an eye condition he suffers from, he began to travel the world. The rapper discovered he had a love for helping other people and found solace at Camp Nor’wester. Fast forward to the end of 2014 and S1mple has been performing as a solo artist for only five months and is already at his make or break moment. He entered a brand new artist competition, which sees the winner walk away with a £100,000 recording contract with Negart Records. ‘It’s not to say I am going to give up on music,’ added the 28 year-old. ‘But you hit a stage in life where you need to be able to live. ‘As much as I love what I do and I get to talk to people, I can’t live. I’m 28, still living at home and couldn’t afford to move out even if I wanted to. This competition is the deciding factor for me, if I am still chasing merch sales and booking shows at the end of the year with no real progressive nature to what I am doing, then I might have to look at doing something else.’ In the space of five short months since becoming a solo act S1mple has hit the open mic scene hard to build a name for himself, performing at 23 open mic nights in 23 days. He has also been all around Hampshire trying to collect votes to help him in the competition, which he is currently standing in third. But he has admitted if he does not succeed in winning this competition there may be no other choice but to leave rap. One option which the Southsea born rapper has considered is going into troubled schools and doing workshops. S1mple said: ‘I got to do a workshop environment with this school in Kent

and I am not ashamed to say it was the hardest thing I have done in my life. ‘Trying to get them to interact was hard and there were two kids who just wouldn’t listen. ‘But then when I performed they were silent and I had their full attention. ‘I don’t know if music is what I want to do, what I would love to do is help people and survive doing it.’ Living above his parents restaurant, Peter’s Tapas Restaurant, in Southsea, S1mple makes one thing very clear. He is not doing this for the fame – he is doing this to give back people who have supported him in the past. He sings the praises of companies like Mellow 9 Productions, Music I and The Flash on Air radio station, who have all helped him get to where he is today. And to show how charitable this honest man is a, percentage of every CD he sells goes to the Portsmouth Association for the Blind. S1mple said: ‘My parents have been a massive support and they can really see the drive I have, they have even been asking customers in the restaurant to vote for me. ‘I work on honesty and belief and I put my everything into what I want to do, and if people show me support then I will give it straight back.’

David is one of Britain’s most respected actors on stage and television. He was awarded the CBE in 2010. David is best known for his role as the Belgian detective Hercule Poirot in Agatha Christie’s Poirot and he has recently completed all 74 Poirot TV films which is the whole canon of Agatha Christie’s Poirot stories. He says: ‘I’m not making Lady Bracknell a pantomime dame with a falsetto voice. I’ll also be wearing a boned corset which means that you can’t slouch and that you have to sit on the edge of your seat with your back straight.’ Directed by Adrian Noble, be the first to experience this major new production before it opens in the West End this Summer. The National Theatre’s multi awardwinning production of The Curious Incident of the Dog in the NightTime, adapted by Simon Stephens from Mark Haddon’s best-selling book, is making its Southampton debut at Mayflower Theatre on June 23 where it will run for two weeks. Play, Best Director, Best Lighting Design and Best Sound Design and is simultaneously running at the Gielgud Theatre in London and on Broadway as well as touring the UK and Ireland. Playwright Simon Stephens said about adapting Haddon’s novel for the stage: ‘The adaptation was a really joyful experience. I knew that the key to it was the relationship between Christopher and his teacher. Although it’s not that central in the novel, what struck me was that everybody in life has a favourite teacher. Even people who hated school, even people who found school a miserable experience, had one teacher who they loved more than others and got them in a way that other teachers didn’t. I knew that if I could get that relationship right, then we could create an evening in the theatre that people could recognize themselves in. GUIDE 2 FASHION
GUIDE 2 FASHION
Feminine frocks and sherberty shades topped with pops of neon usher in the season’s sweetest trend. Katie Wright presents spring’s dolly delights
a boxy crop top and a smattering of chunky costume jewels.
While the sexy Seventies and hauteboho looks ruled on many a spring/ summer catwalk, elsewhere, an altogether softer trend was gathering pace.
With a prom dress, you’ll want a sharp cropped jacket whose hem falls no lower than your waist, but a longer frock coat works well with a fitted shift.
Giambattista Valli’s couture offering was awash with pretty pastel tones and tulle, at Fendi there was a flourish of feathery frocks, and the typically tongue-in-cheek Moschino show saw a parade of twirling Barbie girls. So it’s really up to you how far you want to go with the kook-factor. Keep it neat with candy coloured daywear separates, or doll yourself up with cutesy shoes and a dinky bag too. However you want to play it, take your pick and mix from these sweet pieces... Frosty Frocks The perfect no-fuss foundation for the dollhouse look is a pastel-hued, vintage inspired dress - think of it like a flawlessly frosted cake waiting to be decorated. If the shade is edible - mint, lemon, pistachio, peach - you know you’re on the right track. As for silhouette, mid-century shapes are best. A Sixties shift is great for day, but be wary of high-necked styles if you’re larger on top, while a Fifties prom style will accentuate (or fake) hourglass curves. Saccharine Skirts For a two-piece alternative, a full or circle skirt is your best bet, but steer clear of light, swishy fabrics. Look for brocade or scuba skirts that hold their structure and pair well with silk tees or fitted blouses in equally icy shades. Approach print with caution too - florals should be bold not chintzy, or the overall effect can look cluttered. To elevate the look for evening, a highwaisted tulle skirt looks exquisite with
Sugar Coats Top your retro dress or skirt with a jacket in a tonal or contrasting colour, but keep it on the pastel spectrum powder pink and lemon yellow are ideal.
If that sounds like something the Queen would wear, well, it is, but the key to bringing this look up to date is all in the accessories... Bijoux Bags Mini bags are big news this season, the trend for taking much-loved designer handbags and shrinking them to miniature proportions having filtered down to the high street. These dainty darlings may not be practical, but they’re an excellent accompaniment to the baby-doll trend, particularly the acid bright grab bags with shiny metallic detailing. Think juicy hues like lime, tangerine or fuchsia to add a modern edge your icy ensemble. Poppy Socks Socks and sandals may be a no-no for summer, but socks and court shoes are another matter. Update the Fifties bobby sock look by pairing pointed-toe courts with lace, crochet or gingham trims, but don’t go higher than ankle height, or you’re into Lolita territory. As for the courts, don’t be afraid to clash prints. Add interest with scallop edging, spots, stripes, or even dark or neon florals to break up the expanse of pastel on your top half.

Adam Carroll-Smith, marketing manager at Aspex Gallery, gives us his run-down on a few of the best visual arts events taking place across the city in June
Winter might be coming across the seven kingdoms of Westeros and whatever the other six places in Game of Thrones are called (Compton, Long Beach and Inglewood are three of them, I think) but here on the south coast, summer is on the way. And so too is a whole heap of great visual arts stuff.

Here at Aspex Gallery, Gunwharf — we’re behind Loch Fyne, FYI — June means the launch of the aforementioned season of cycle-themed works, which we’ve rather cleverly named ‘In The Frame’.
Our own café space and the walls of Aspex Guildhall will also feature an exhibition of bicycle and cyclinginspired artwork, created by artists who live within a 90-minute journey of Portsmouth, and curated in conjunction with Miles Hutchings of cyclemiles. co.uk.
As part of the season, which lasts from June 12-July 26, we’ll be transforming our main space into a showcase of some of the most famous bikes ever

Everything from Victorian-era Penny Farthings to contemporary custom-built racing bikes and even Connell’s own first bike, a Raleigh Winner, will be hanging from the walls of the gallery. “By taking the bikes out of their usual context, the incredible craftsmanship and design of each one will be showcased,” says Tim. “Cycling is hugely popular in the city now, so we’re really excited for it to open in June.”
Finally, the gallery’s craft space will also host an exhibition, curated by Oana

Elsewhere in the city, all you budding photographers have the opportunity in June to hone your snapping skills on one a Summer Photography Walkshop, run by Southsea’s own media collective, Strong Island. Priced at £10, these photography workshops are scheduled to take place at different locations around the city, and each involves a leisurely two-hour walk, packed with fun and creative photo activities designed to help you get more from your camera. Each walkshop will look at composition, perspectives, textures, leading lines, creating narratives as well as more technical aspects of operating your camera, whether you’re using a digital compact or SLR.
