Twin County Fair

Do any of our loyal readers remember the old Twin County Fair?

The fair was held on the grounds of Lappawinzo Fish and Game Protective Association in Allen Township. Mr. Greg Peters gave a rare copy of a 1939 fair audit to Larry Oberly, of Northampton Area Historical Society. The audit lets us look back at costs in 1939, a Depression year.

Northampton Borough Council Agrees to remove sign blocking Historic Roxy Theatre marquee

Richard Wolfe, owner of the historic Roxy Theatre for over 50 years, appeared before the Northampton Borough Council during their meeting on Thursday, July 6 to express concerns over a large crosswalk warning signal erected in front of the theatre’s famous marquee.

The flashing sign alerts pedestrians to a crosswalk at 20th and Main streets. However, it blocks what Wolfe said is the most photographed theatre marquee in the

country and a source of pride to the borough.

“[The sign is] distracting to the historical nature of the Roxy Theatre,” he told council in a statement. “Do not take...away from something that is so important here to so many people.”

Wolfe passed out photographs showing the sign blocking the marquee. Councilman Anthony Lopsonzski, Sr. said he was “flabbergasted” upon seeing the photos.

“It is obtrusive,” he said. “This

theatre is world-known. It puts Northampton on the map.”

Borough Manager LeRoy Brobst explained that all crosswalks must be legal and have appropriate signage; otherwise, the borough can be liable if a pedestrian is injured. The crosswalk was put there as a courtesy several decades ago but never made “official.” Public Works installed signage to make it legal.

However, Brobst, Wolfe and

The fair was incorporated as the Twin County Agricultural Association in 1935. The Lappawinzo was the sponsor. At the time, it was the largest one-day fair in the state and drew large crowds.

A fair poster states, “Fair Thursday, Sept. 16, 1939. N.H.S. Band concert afternoon and evening. Roving cowboys, evening. Horseshoe pitching contest. Continental Dance Orchestra, evening, sponsored by Lehigh Furniture Factory. Log sawing contest. Agricultural displays.”

When this writer was a student at Northampton High School in the 1950s, the fair was very popular. School was dismissed at noon, so we could attend the fair. We walked to the fair and had a fun day.

The audit will shock our younger readers- a contrast from current fairs!

Dis-ease

Continued

know that each of us in some small or large way have accepted the disease each of us are afflicted with. As an example, maybe ten, 20 years ago you were told you had high blood pressure. Perhaps in this scenario instead of fixing the real issue you decided to take a drug to mask the symptom. You accepted your disease rather than attempting to face it headfirst. (Kicking the can down the road is never a good strategy.) Another example could be the elevated glucose or triglyceride levels we see so frequently. Here again, rather than changing course, many have kept doing the same thing that got them in trouble, essentially accepting dis-ease and are taking a pill to again mask and manage.

Tell me the truth, how many of those afflicted with diabetes are right now having soda, chips or ice cream? The answer is many if not most. We have accepted our disease and surrendered our health in return.

Don’t be upset with me for the

course of action you decided to take, or should I say, didn’t take. We are all adults, each choosing their own life path. To the point, your health is your responsibility alone. The responsibility is not your doctor’s or pharmacist’s. Yours.

If you think I am holding myself out as one sitting outside looking in, then think again. I have those areas of my life that could have and should have been properly addressed long ago and because I did not, here I am dealing with the pain of my own foolish management.

Perhaps I find myself leaning into this topic with a stern tone as recently I got a call from a childhood friend I care deeply about. He related that he is lucky to be alive after almost having a widow maker type of cardiac experience. I listened intently as he shared his surprise, his shock, as if this all came from nowhere. He told me that his blood pressure medication that he has been on for years kept everything good. Same with his cholesterol medications. On paper he was the picture of managed health. CT scan showed he was blocked every which way and

stent implants ensued. Does this scenario sound familiar? It should, as it's common.

Imagine if I stopped my dear friend in his tracks and told him point blank that he did this all to himself and he has nobody else to blame. He probably would have hung up on me. If roles were reversed I would for sure. At this time, our conversation needed to remain one where he talked, and I listened. Maybe in the future we can broaden the conversation a bit.

I wonder if my friend will try and chart a different course given his new lease on life or simply accept his dis-ease. I hope he chooses the former, but it won’t be easy. It never is…but it’s worth it. Maybe his lifestyle will change accordingly. Perhaps his diet will make the flip it needs to. Who knows. So many life lessons here. It is a challenge to put it all on paper. My best to you.

Moore Township Supervisors approve hire of full-time police officer

The Moore Township Board of Supervisors met Monday, July 10 to discuss reports, the resignation of a police officer and a full-time hire, Recreation Commission ex-

ercise equipment, Playground in the Park funding, schoolhouse renovations, ordinance codification, and the Parks, Recreation and Open Space plan update.

First, supervisors approved the

Wayne Cacciola minor subdivision sewage planning module based on the recommendation of the Planning Commission and township engineer.

Police Chief Gary West reported that during the month of June, the police department had 379 total incidents including one written warning issued, 44 traffic citations issued, one arrest for a DUI, two non-traffic citations issued for confinement of dogs and harassment, six reportable accidents and three non-reportable accidents.

Chief West also presented the board with a resignation from Officer Emmanuel Varkanis effective July 30, which they unanimously approved. Officer Varkanis will be pursuing a detective position in Monroe County and the board expressed gratitude for his 13 years of service to the township.

en motor vehicle accidents, three automatic fire alarms, 11 ambulance assists, one standby, two carbon monoxide alarms, three smoke investigations, four trees down, one flooding, one wire down, one mutual aid call with Plainfield Township for a fire, four mutual aid calls with Lehigh Township for fires, one mutual aid call with Bushkill Township for a fire, and four mutual aid calls with Bath for one fire, two motor vehicle accidents, one wire down, and two fire police.

In other business, Recreation Commission Chairperson Jodi Hartzell announced that the exercise equipment has been fully installed by the Public Works Department and is ready to be used. Supervisors approved her request for age recommendation and equipment instruction signage, which will accompany the equipment.

Trinity Lutheran Church (Hecktown)

Additionally, Chief West suggested the hire of Matthew Hyman as a full-time officer effective August 7 and waiving of an article in the Collective Bargaining Agreement, which would allow him to start at 100% pay rather than 80%. Officer Hyman has been a part-time patrolman with the township for 16 years, and the board unanimously approved his hire and full pay.

July 24 to July 28 from 9 a.m. to noon daily

Next, Fire Police Captain Jason Harhart reported that the Klecknersville Rangers Vol. Fire Co. responded to 60 ambulance calls during the month of June and 48 fire calls, which accounted for three fires, sev-

Supervisors also approved the Recreation Commission’s request for up to $2,000 in reimbursements for the Playground in the Park program pending receipts submitted.

Township Engineer Kevin Horvath provided updates on the Edelman Schoolhouse renovations and the board decided to potentially go with Fedio Construction’s quote for renovations at a cost of $21,650 for the project. Horvath will be seeking a potential start date and timeline for the project for the board to consider at the next meeting.

Township Solicitor David M. Backenstoe stated that the township’s ordinance codification has been completed and will be available online pending advertisement and approval at the September meeting.

Solicitor Backenstoe also requested the board’s approval to prepare a quit claim deed for the township to release ownership of the land that the now vacated Trach Road occupied to show ownership now belongs to the

contiguous property owners. Supervisors granted the approval to move forward with the deed and to allow Backenstoe to represent one of the contiguous property owners in preparation of a consolidation deed.

Following, supervisors unanimously granted approval for Township Manager Nicholas C. Steiner to form a steering committee made up of one stakeholder from each of the township’s boards and committees, and to allow the steering committee to develop an RFP, gather proposals, and make a recommendation to the board as part of the Parks, Recreation, and Open Space update plan that will utilize funds from the Livable Landscapes Grant.

Supervisors also unanimously accepted the completed 2022 audit and the Walker agricultural security area resolution for a property on Valley View Drive.

Last, Supervisor Michael A. Tirrell Jr. presented the board with a project to put LED lights on McCandless Field at the Recreation Center to illuminate the field at night, which would be funded through a donation with funds matched from MTAA.

Tirrell expressed that the Recreation Commission found a contractor to install the lights and that the only thing the township would pay for are the actual lights, which will cost approximately $27,446.

However, Vice Chairman David Shaffer stated that he would prefer to lump adding new football field lights in with this project and secure a grant for both.

Chairman Daniel Piorkowski said that he would prefer to hold off on this project until the Parks, Recreation, and Open Space update plan is completed, so the board agreed to table the discussion until that time.

The Planning Commission announced that their July meeting has been canceled, so their next meeting will be Monday, August 28.

The next Moore Township Board of Supervisors meeting will be held Tuesday, August 1 at 6 p.m. in the municipal building, located at 2491 Community Dr.

Police Chief Bryan Kadingo said they have never been aware of a single pedestrian accident at

this spot. In addition, there are already two legal crosswalks at 19th and Main streets and 21st and Main streets. Brobst said he discussed the issue with Public Works and had them remove the signage and block out the crosswalk paint, eliminating the crosswalk and restoring visibility

to the theatre’s marquee. Council could motion to have the crosswalk reinstated legally, but no councilmembers made that motion.

“I’m glad to know that the visual experience of the Roxy marquee will not be diminished now,” said Mayor Tony Pristash.

“We have, truly, a diamond.”

In other news, council approved the resignation of Christopher Frey from the wastewater treatment plant and road crew due to medical reasons. The borough will be looking for a candidate to fill his spot and complete training to be a certified operator at the plant.

Council also appointed Jason Donohue as a council representative for the Fourth Ward. He was sworn in by Mayor Pristash.

Council also approved a 15-minute parking spot at 1830 Main St. in front of J’s Steaks & Subs. A parking meter will be eliminated to allow patrons to pick up their food without issue.

Finally, new netting was added to the Canal Park baseball fields in the hopes of addressing concerns about home run balls from adult baseball leagues hitting homes and cars. A representative from the league said the netting may not be enough to block the home runs, but the teams are limited to two home runs per game to prevent these conflicts. Council will look for other options to alleviate these concerns for next season before new permits are issued.

The next borough council meeting will be Thursday, July 20 at 7 p.m.

Nazareth Borough Council grants permission for Eagle Scout project

The Nazareth Borough Council met Wednesday, July 5 to discuss various requests and borough reports.

During public comment, resident Becky Butz provided council with a statement regarding her representation of the Helping Hands beautification committee in the borough. Butz expressed that in previous years, Helping Hands has planted the flowers in the urns around the borough and at Borough Hall, while the Pub-

lic Works Department keeps up with their watering maintenance.

However, when Butz stopped by Borough Hall on Friday, June 30 to add flags to the flowers for the parade, she noticed that the Helping Hands signs were hidden out of sight behind the shrubbery, which she said has also happened in the past. Therefore, Butz announced that the committee will only be taking care of the flowers in the 24 urns around the borough moving forward.

In other business, under public

property, council unanimously approved the following motions: use of the Essroc Fields Soccer Complex by Nazareth Youth Soccer for the fall season; use of the amphitheater on various Monday and Friday evenings through November by the Nazareth Soccer Club for conditioning and training; “all day” free meter parking in the downtown area on Friday, July 14 and Saturday, July 15 for Sidewalk Sales, the Nazareth Block Party and Nazareth Day events; to provide a letter of ac-

knowledgement to Vigilance Hose Fire Co. No. 1 recognizing their selling of beer and alcoholic beverages at the Borough Block Party downtown on Friday, July 14; the request of Carol Eisenhart for use of the bandstand in the park for a concert by “The Really Terrible Orchestra” on Saturday, August 12 from 7 to 8 p.m.; and the request of the Nazareth Moravian Church for use of the small pavilion on Sunday, August 27 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. for their Rally Day Worship Service and Picnic.

Council also unanimously granted permission for Adam Wyatt to proceed with his Eagle Scout project, which will allow the placement of a memorial station near the flagpole at Council Chambers. The memorial station will provide an internet link to recorded interviews conducted with war veterans from Nazareth with interviews logged and accessible through a link to the Library of Congress. Wyatt’s project will begin after planned upgrades to Council Chambers are completed and council provides final approval for the scope of the work, the precise location on the grounds of Council Chambers and the actual type of memorial station to be used.

Under law, council unanimously approved a motion to advertise for an ordinance change that will reduce parameters for long-term parking on borough streets. Currently, vehicles may park for five days without moving and the ordinance change will reduce the time for parking without moving to 72 hours or three days.

Under environmental steering and lighting, council unanimously approved the hiring of Rapid Tree Service to trim 46 trees in the business district for a total cost of $4,600 and to take down three trees on Hickory Street for

a total cost of $5,950.

Council also unanimously approved direction for the engineer to prepare the bid specifications and to properly advertise for Borough Refuse Removal. Bids will be returnable by August 31 and will be opened during the September workshop meeting. Bids will be for three years of refuse removal services with options for an additional one- or two-year contract extension.

Next, Councilwoman Laureen Pellegrino presented the fire chief reports for the months of April and May. In April, Vigilance Hose responded to 21 calls in the borough for nine fire alarms, three gas leaks, two tree problems, two wire problems, one motor vehicle accident, one burn complaint, one odor investigation, one high occupancy structure fire and one traffic control, as well as seven mutual aid calls for two motor vehicle accidents, one dwelling fire, one structure fire, one commercial structure fire, one move up assignment and one fire alarm. For April, Vigilance Hose spent 223 hours on calls, 211 hours on training, 130 hours on administrative duties and eight hours on fundraising for a total of 744 volunteer hours.

In May, Vigilance Hose responded to 19 calls in the borough for seven fire alarms, three motor vehicle accidents, two dwelling fires, two gas leaks, two wire problems, one odor investigation, one brush fire and one tree down, as well as six mutual aid calls for two motor vehicle accidents, two fire alarms, one dwelling fire and one move up assignment. For the month of May, Vigilance Hose spent 146 hours on calls, 175 hours on training, 109 hours on community service and 62 hours on administrative duties for a combined total of 492 volunteer hours.

Last, Mayor Lance Colondo provided the monthly police report for June and the fees collected for May since June’s fee collection totals were not yet available. During the month of June, the police department had 345 total police activity/calls for service with 26 crimes reported and investigated, 18 criminal arrests, six drug-related crimes, two Part 1 offenses, 136 traffic citations issued, 69 warnings issued, four reportable traffic accidents and 10 non-reportable traffic accidents. Parking Enforcement had 248 parking enforcement officer violations, 68 officer issued violations and 316 total parking tickets issued for the month. For the month of May, the borough collected $16,469.17 for fees, fines, permits, rentals, tickets and receipts.

Nazareth Borough Council will have a workshop meeting on Thursday, August 3 at 6 p.m. and the next regular monthly meeting will be held on Monday, August 7 at 6 p.m. in Council Chambers.

Nazareth Area Garden Club Announces July meeting Program

Submitted by SANDEE RINEHART

The Nazareth Area Garden Club will hold its monthly meeting on Tuesday, July 18 at 7 p.m. at Dryland UCC, 4415 Newburg Rd., Nazareth.

Last month’s speaker was Gerard Touhey, who took the club for a picture tour of his water gardens. The club was also lucky enough to visit his home in Easton on Saturday, June 24 for an inperson tour.

The program this month will be presented by one of the club’s advanced designers, Phoebe Cubberly, who will speak about how to dry plant material and tips on using them in a variety of ways. The club will be doing dried flower entries at

its annual show on September 8 and 9.

At the upcoming July meeting, club members will display many plant specimens including marigolds, zinnias and petunias. Native plants, blooming shrubs and a succulent garden will also be featured. This month’s floral arrangements are a modern arrangement called “Boom” and stretch arrangement called “Snack Attack.” As always, an arrangement of the designer’s choice will be displayed but not judged.

Refreshments will be served.

Visitors are always welcome to attend club meetings.

For more information, please call Sandee Rinehart at 610-360-8370.
