Happy Mother’s Day!

By John Hall, Blue Mountain Town & Country Gazette

It’s time for Mother’s Day 2021 and it’s almost time to go camping. Those are the two key things we are going to focus on in this issue. To start, we want to wish all moms a wonderful Mother’s Day. We also want to give you some creative thoughts on how to celebrate Mother’s Day in 2021, when things are not quite yet back

to normal. In addition to tips on what you can do this year for mom, including taking virtual tours of some of the world’s greatest gardens, you’ll also find some interesting fun-facts about Mother’s Day. Explore all of that in “How To: Celebrating Mother’s Day 2021.” We are also going to take a look at camping and how it can make you and your kids, if you have kids, happier and healthier in “Six Healthy Reasons to Go Camping.” In “Camping: Did You Know?” we will tell you some things that you may not know about camping – for instance, did you know Millennials go camping more than any other group? We’ll tell you why and also tell you about the most expensive camp you can travel to anywhere in the world. It might surprise you to learn that that camp just happens to be to our north and west in Vancouver, Canada. Also on the camping front, we’re going to give you a glimpse into “camping like the rich and famous.” In addition to that most expensive camp up in Canada, there are other campgrounds around the world, including here in the U.S., that are quite different from the ones you and I visit during our annual camping adventures. Find out more – and be sure to check out the pictures – in “Camping Like the Rich and Famous.” Although camping is a tremendously popular activity for millions of Americans, if you’re someone who still steers clear of it, you might find some comforting, and maybe perspective-changing information in “Camping Facts and Myths” later in the issue. So please enjoy this issue of the Blue Mountain Town & Country Gazette, which you may also access at www.townandcountrygazette.com. And of course, if you find yourself celebrating Mother’s Day as a mom or otherwise, we hope you have a great, great day!

How To: Celebrating Mother’s Day 2021 SOURCE: Various

Even though there are parts of life that are somewhat back to normal, your typical Mother's Day celebration – Mother’s Day breakfast or brunch, a spa day, or that long-awaited in-person visit – still may not be a real option this year. So what’s the “how to” for celebrating Mother’s Day in 2021? If you want to go beyond a simple and expected Mother’s Day card or Mother’s Day gift, there are tons of creative ways you can connect with Mom or Grandma at home. A phone call is sure to brighten her day; a video call is even better. Or how about a virtual happy hour where you and your siblings all toast Mom with “mom”-osas? If Mom loves to garden, some of the world's best garden tours are available to enjoy with everyone sitting on their sofas. You can find links to them online, but for instance, you can make a visit to Claude Monet’s garden at Giverny, France via this link: h t t p s : / / w w w. y o u t u b e . c o m / watch?v=rjWx2WNXFF4. In the last decades of

his life, Monet’s garden was his primary “subject” for painting. Other Options Another option is to take a virtual painting class. Even the little ones – from toddlers and preschoolers to elementary aged kids – can get in on the action with their own masterpieces. No matter what you do, you can take heart in the fact that your Mom will find joy in feeling appreciated and loved. Here are some other things you can do with your Mom on Mother's Day to make her special day the best and most memorable it can be. Cook a Family Recipe / Every family has a recipe that gets passed down from generation to generation. Celebrate Mother's Day by teaching the little ones in the family the secrets to making Aunt Sissy's famous lemon cake or Grandma's prize-winning chocolate pie. It’s a fun exercise and of course, then everyone gets a piece of cake or pie. Make a Mom Playlist / Songwriters have long been writing touching lyrics about mothers. Make her a playlist of the best Mother’s Day songs to remind her just how much you appreciate her. Just do an online search for “songs about mothers” to

get some great ideas. Mother’s Day Facts • More calls are made on Mother's Day than any other day of the year – approximately 122 million calls! • The most popular gift for Mother's Day is the greeting card; every Mother's Day there are approximately 152 million Mother's Day cards sent. • Mother's Day is the third highest-selling day for flowers and plants after Christmas and Hanukkah; almost one quarter of all flowers purchased throughout the year are bought for Mother's Day. • One of the earliest Mother's Day celebrations was in Ancient Greece. The Greek would have spring celebrations in honor of Rhea, the goddess of fertility, motherhood, and generation. • Some countries still observe ancient festivals honoring mothers. In India, people celebrate Durga-puja, a festival that pays homage to the mother goddess, Durga. The festival is a ten-day event that takes place around September or October. From Thailand to Germany, Mother's Day is celebrated all over the world.

There is one caveat however, direct sun exposure should be taken in moderation and adequate protection should be used to minimize the risk of skin cancer. 5. Camping can lead to increased exercise / If your daily routine involves long periods of sitting down, chances are your opportunities to exercise are limited. One solution? Go camping.

While camping, you will likely explore new surroundings walking, cycling or kayaking. This increased exercise has been well-documented as having a range of physical and mental benefits including combatting health problems and disease and improving mood and energy levels. 6. Camping makes you happier / Camping goes a long way to improving your mood. It all has to do with serotonin, that wonderful chemical our body produces that helps to make us happy. We’ve already touched on some factors that help the body create serotonin: more sunlight, more oxygen, and increased physical activity. And when you’re camping, you’re likely to tick all these boxes.

Camping Facts and Myths SOURCE: puretravel.com

When the winter season ends, the days get longer and soon it’s the start of summer. We’re not quite there yet, but we are getting close. At this time of year the weather becomes more inviting and the smells of campfires, earth and trees begin drawing people to outdoor camping. There is really nothing better than sitting around a campfire, roasting marshmallows and enjoying quality time with friends and family and yet, some people steer clear of it. If you steer clear of camping, here are a few myths and facts about camping you might find interesting. Fact – You Get Closer to Nature Camping is one of the best ways to get closer to nature. It helps us get in touch with our primitive instincts and teaches us to survive with less. Because we spend so much time indoors, camping helps us reconnect with the natural world around us. Camping Facts Continued from page 14

Myth – Camping Is Expensive You can always plan your camping trips according to your budget, from the gear to your destination. Instead of going to a private or exotic campground, head to a nearby state or national park, where you can find campsites, some with cabins. Some of the parks are so close to home you can easily visit over a weekend. In terms of the gear, you can buy durable and essential camping gear at affordable rates to suit any budget. It is now also possible to rent your camping gear. To get an idea of rental cost, which could be a great way to go if you’re a first-time camper, check in with a local or online camping retailer. Fact – You Learn New Skills Living outdoors is an opportunity to test your survival skills and learn how well you can live with fewer things. A camping trip teaches you how to build a fire, protect yourself from mosquitoes, bugs and other insects and more. You will also learn how to appreciate nature’s beauty,

cook outdoors and work hard setting up your tent, starting and tending the fire and cleaning your campsite. Myth – You Need To Be Experienced Everyone starts as a beginner when they try something new. So, it is not necessary for you to be an experienced camper to go for a camping trip, but there are some basic things a first-timer should know: • Become familiar with your camping gear before you actually use it on your first adventure. • When choosing your tent, space and comfort should be your priority. • Make a checklist of your camping gear and then check each item off the list as it’s packed. Campground Etiquette Finally, it is very important to observe campground rules. That includes respecting quiet hours, using low lights and avoiding cutting through anyone’s campsite. For your specific campsite, always keep it clean and put out your fire before going to bed or any time you are leaving the campsite. There are many campgrounds throughout our region. You can do this!

Camping: Did You Know? SOURCE: Various

Did you know that tents are the most popular type of shelter when people go camping? Or that the average camper age is 35 years old? Now, you might have figured that tents were the most popular shelter type – used by 69% of campers, but did you think 35 was the average age, or did you think younger (or did you think older)? Here are some other interesting “did you know?” facts about camping. The Numbers There are 13,000 vehicle accessible campgrounds in the United States and Canada. In the United States alone, approximately 40 million people go camping every year and 2.7 nights is the average length of camping trips for tent campers. The average trip for an RV camper is 3.5 nights. In the United States, on average, campers take 3.8 trips per year. They drive 146 miles to their destinations and set up camp about 1/4 mile from their cars. Approximately 42% of campers in the United States choose to camp at state park campgrounds.

Campers spend an average $128.26 on their first camping trip. Around 68% of adult campers in the United States are married or living with a partner, which suggests that camping is a family activity. Up In Canada Clayoquot Wilderness Resort in Vancouver Island, Canada, is the world’s most expensive luxury camping experience. A single night costs $3,900. The camp can only be accessed by a 30-minute boat ride or by taking the scenic route, a 45-minute private charter plane. There are no televisions or phones at the resort. The goal is for the camp’s guests to get away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life and really be entertained by the great outdoors. Each tent has everything a person would need to create their very own outdoor adventure. In addition to scuba gear, fishing poles, and horseback riding equipment, the rooms are decked out with massage chairs, hot tubs, and saunas. The camp offers tons of activities including yoga classes, horseback riding, kayaking, whale watching, bear watching, hot spring swimming, archery, rifle shooting, zip-lines and much more. However, one of the most popular activities is a hiking and fishing expedition aided by helicopter to ensure the guests can plunge deep into the wilderness.

Other Surprising Facts • Millennials go camping more than any other age group. They cite a love of outdoor activities, an appreciation of nature, a love of music festivals, and a love of sharing photos on social media as motivations for camping. • The flashlight is the MOST popular camping purchase of all. • The Mountain Region of the United States, from Montana down to Arizona and New Mexico is slightly more popular as a camping destination than other parts of the country. • The father of the modern outdoor movement is widely considered to be author, preacher, and sportsman William H. H. Murray. He published the watershed book on camping called Adventures in the Wilderness; or, Camp Life in the Adirondacks. That book made camping accessible to the masses for the first time – might be an interesting read.

This year we plan to return to most of the events with the public following Covid 19 precautions. As conditions improve more and more events are becoming feasible. in Slatington. Flags for the veteran’s graves will be replaced on May 2, 2021. Volunteers will leave the American Legion Post at 8:30 a.m. to replace flags on the following 12 cemeteries: Williamstown, Jacksonville, New Tripoli U.C.C., Heidelberg U.C.C., Neff’s Lutheran, 7th St. Catholic, Fairview, Friedens, Presbyterian, Washington St. Catholic, Slatedale, and Union cemeteries. Rain dates are May 9, or May 16. Anyone wishing to help please meet at the American Legion Post by 8:00 a.m. Volunteers are needed to replace the approximately 2650 flags. All are welcome to help and honor our deceased veterans. Each veteran from the Revolutionary War to the present day whose grave is in these cemeteries will have his or her grave checked, the metal grave marker checked, and flag replaced with a new one. The flags are provided by the county for Memorial Day. The county no longer provides flags for Veterans Day in November. The Sons of the American Legion Squadron 16 from the Allen O. Delke Post has taken on the responsibility of purchasing flags for Veterans Day. They are conducting various fund raisers to collect the approximately $3000.00 needed to purchase the flags. Poppies, in white American Legion donation boxes, that support disabled veterans will be available at various businesses in the Northern Lehigh area. They can also be obtained at the Legion Post Home located at 510 Main street, Slatington. Other events in the planning stage are: Sunday, May 30, the American Legion Post 16, Sons of the American Legion Squadron 16, and the Legion Riders will conduct services at 9 outlying cemeteries. The Legion Auxiliary will provide lunch afterward. Monday, the Legion family will hold services at the remaining three cemeteries and at the Trout Creek covered bridge. This year Memorial Day services will be held at Memorial Park instead of Union or Fairview cemeteries. The Slatington 101st Memorial Day parade will form up on South street at 9:30 a.m. The parade to Memorial Park starts at 10:00 a.m. and will proceed down Main street to the park, followed by the main service. The public is invited and encouraged to attend and participate at all services. MAY 6, 2021 || townandcountrygazette.com

Camping Like the Rich and Famous SOURCE: therichest.com

There are typically two ways to go camping. The first is to pack your backpack with whatever you need and head off into the woods. However, a good majority of people prefer not to sleep wherever they lay their head and like to shower on a regular basis. If that is your preferred method, you probably would want to rent a spot at a campground. A campground site will normally run $10-40 a night, depending on the amenities offered. If you own a travel trailer or RV, the fee may even be as high as $100 a night because of water and electric hook-ups. There is however another way to camp. The Height of Luxury You could go camping like the “rich and famous.” It is very costly, but it is an experience like no other. This is the option of staying at a highly luxurious campground. The tents at these camps, which are located around the world, are not like any tents you and I normally see. These tents are bigger than some homes and come stocked with luxury amenities such as personal hot tubs, spas, and other

outrageous furnishings that will make you think you are at the finest five-star hotel. If you have decided that 2021 will be the year that you do indeed go camping like the “rich and famous,” here are two places you might consider: Cresto Ranch – Colorado Cresto Ranch is located in Dunton Hot Springs, Colorado. The campground sits in the middle of a beautiful alpine valley in the heart of the Rocky Mountains. The ranch is based near an old ghost town. The cabins have been restored from old buildings located at the town’s limits, giving the campground a historic and unique atmosphere. These cabins are fitted with all the highest quality

Stolzfus, Gordonville, PA A twenty mile trip to church with horse and buggy Here in Lancaster County we often go to another congregation a little way from home on the ‘in between’ Sunday. [Each Amish district meets on alternate Sundays.] My wife and my parents [‘Dads’ refers to those living at his dad’s place, here, his parents.] had planned such a trip in March of 2002. To make such a trip some preparation must be made on Saturday. Get the covered buggy out and wash it all around. Check the hydraulic brake fluid and the 12-volt battery. Take a washrag and Windex and make the windows shine. Get the horse out and brush his hair and smear his hoofs. Now everything is ready. A Lancaster County covered buggy is 39 inches wide and 72 inches long; a little smaller than a VW Rabbit. Now-a-days most are made with Thermopane windows, sliding doors and foam cushion seats; so it’s a nice way to travel. One can travel and it’s a pleasure. Early the next morning around four o’clock, my wife and I rise and eat breakfast. First (Next, actually) I feed the horse, “George W. Bush,” and put the harness on his back and fasten it. Then Continued on page 28

we put on our Sunday clothes and hitch the horse. Now everything is ready, and around five o’clock we are driving out the lane. We go to my parents and pick them up. My parents are ‘old folks’ and their sight is not that good. They like to go away and both like to talk a lot. So after five we are on our way. We are now in the Pequea Valley, and now we travel on to Millcreek Valley by Intercourse. We drive out the Leacock Road and east on Harvest Drive and the sun comes around the Chester County hills. Now we go out to the old route 340, now northeast on Westview. It is a beautiful Sunday morning, temperature: 30 degrees. George W. is nicely warmed up and does about 10 miles per hour. We go through the Millcreek Valley and come to New Holland. Everything is quiet, too early for the ‘English’ to go to church. Mom and my wife are busy chatting in the back seat. My dad and I are talking; Dad can’t see too well, but he says again and again what was here or there. “Here was creamery one time,” he says, as we were still driving on Custer Avenue. We turn north toward New Holland. Now we are in the Conestoga Valley. Then we turn east on Long Lane – and we are in the Groffdale Mennonite district (Old order Mennonites). Their buggies are black and have wide doors [The Amish buggies are gray.]. We now go by their Spring Grove Meeting-house. Then we turn North on route 625; it’s still five miles to go. We stop and let George W. rest a little and talk with a [Mennonite] minister walking to church. Then we drive on and come to the Melvin King farm. My younger sister and the whole family give us a nice “Welcome.” The boys take George W. to the barn. “Don’t give him too much water.” The people come together and by eight o’clock

BIRTHDAY COUPON

the ministers go in; the church meeting is held in the shop. At eleven o’clock the church is over. Then the men make tables from the benches and the women and girls prepare the meal. The people eat pies made from dried fruits, bread, cottage cheese, pickles and red beets and coffee or tea. This is our usual church meal. I looked after the horse, George W., giving him water and food. After the meal the people sit around and visit with one another. Around half past two, I hitch up George W. and we start for home. We go through Terre Hill and towards Groffdale and stop by our child Michael and his family for supper. Now George W. can rest and eat. Then we drive towards home, take my parents home and just before the sun goes down in a beautiful sunset, we drive in our lane. Now George W. can again rest and eat. We thank God for a nice trip. In a few days George W. will be rested up again. [What I found surprising for an Amish writer is the amount of English loan words that were used for common Dutch words that already exist, such as: Dad, Trip, Back, Valley or Minister. I also tried to plot his journey to church on a map, but there were some ‘holes’ which I had to fill in. He stated that it was a 20 mile trip to that meeting and that was correct. Either he had someone look it up on a smartphone or the Amish now have odometers on their buggies!]

Learning during Summer

by Christine Allen, president of Reading Escapades & Math Explorers, Inc.

If you are like most parents (and students and teachers), this school year has been the hardest one you have ever had. With all the rules, changes in schedules, and new ways of learning, many of the children have had a really hard time learning new concepts. Teachers have done their best, but they were not often given tools that work well. As parents/guardians, you most likely have had to figure out how to work, help with online schooling, and all the stress this year has given us. These things have come together to make this school year not so productive. There isn’t a family I know personally who has come through without problems. You may want to just “take the summer off” and regroup. That is a great idea, and we all need a break. However, the children’s education is behind and this summer is the one summer that you, as parents/guardians, can’t waste. Regardless, learning and reinforcement doesn’t need to be drudgery. There are many fun things to do to not only keep up your child’s skills but also to get them interested in learning again. Here are some of my favorites:

Visit Science/Art/History museums such as The DaVinci Center in Allentown, The Reading Public Museum, Gettysburg National Park to experience hands-on learning on interesting topics. Get out and explore nature for an afternoon or even a vacation such as Hickory Run State Park or The Lehigh Valley Nature Gap. Ask your children what THEY want to learn about and explore that through library books and videos. Get them out with the many educational camps in the area, including the ones Reading Escapades & Math Explorers have throughout the week. We have added ones for younger kids (ages 4-7) and science-focused ones (ages 9-12) along with our traditional BrainPower Camps (ages 6-10) For more details about our camps, visit www. read2day.com/shop.

Lehigh Township Historical Society News Submitted by RUTH HALL KENT

Hello Spring! The Lehigh Township Historical Centre Museum has been closed to the public for a long time due to the pandemic and sadly will continue to be for the foreseeable future. The museum is closed this year due to a space issue, not COVID. We will not be holding museum open house tours at the Historical Centre this summer. We had to store the all of the items for our Basket Social that was cancelled last spring and will not be held until later this year. That said, we are resuming our regular meetings and fundraising

We can use all the help we can get! Give us a call. Spring Cleaning? Remember that our mission is to preserve the history of the Lehigh Township and we welcome any old or historical items that can be added to our museum collection. Lehigh Township Historical Society is interested in old documents, photos or items you uncover (and no longer want) when cleaning out your house, attic, basement, garage or outbuildings. Don’t throw things out, even if you think they are not worth keeping. Contact us and we will decide if the articles are worthy of being entered into our archives for future research or display. Items from old businesses; old political items; farm, household and personal items; books; calendars and newspapers that have been stashed in the back of a drawer or closet may be great things to donate to our museum and share with others for a flashback to the past! All donations to our museum and archives are recorded and acknowledged. If you have items to donate, please call our office at 610-440-0151 and leave a message to set an appointment for drop-off. Kutztown University Creates Student Housing Program for Substance-Free Living

Kutztown University has created a student housing program for students interested in living and learning with other students who share similar substance-free lifestyle values. While Kutztown University is a dry campus and substances such as drugs and alcohol are prohibited on campus, Freedom Place is open to any student who commits to living a substance-free lifestyle. Our supportive environment will allow students to explore ways to cope with stress, unwind

and have fun with like-minded students. Students make personal commitments for multiple reasons. A lifestyle free of substance is their shared interest for students who choose to live together and connect at Freedom Place. Freedom Place was a joint venture between Health and Wellness Services and university faculty, with a goal of supporting students who choose to live a substance-free lifestyle. Freedom Place is located in the annex of University Place. Residents will have a separate entrance, a community kitchen, three community rooms, single airconditioned rooms at university rates and the convenience of a meal plan. Freedom Place provides students with a supportive and inclusive environment that encourages them to learn from one another, build positive relationships and develop a strong sense of self and greater belonging to the campus community. Rooms are available for the 2021 fall semester. Students who are interested in providing peer support and modeling a healthy lifestyle are encouraged to apply. The program will provide students opportunities that include: Mentorship from Health and Wellness Services and faculty members. Opportunities to attend and plan campus events. Opportunities to engage in community service and advocacy. Located near athletic fields and fitness center. Excursions to entertainment and events. Opportunities to attend local supportive meetings held on and off-campus (optional). In addition to your meal plan, there is a private central kitchen for communal dining. Common area for meetings and activities. Take part in weekly house meetings. Attend and assist in the planning of three KU faculty/ staff facilitated presentations/programs a semester. Plan one house dinner a semester. Take part in weekly Night Out activities.

10 Essential Tips for First Time Campers Written by DAVID SWEET tripsavvy.com

If you want to learn how to go camping for the first time there is a lot to know, but don’t worry— it’s not hard to be a happy camper. We were all beginners once, and expert campers could each share a funny anecdote about a campground mishap or two. New campers sometimes learn things the hard way, and even experienced campers overlook things from time to time. Remember these common mistakes of new campers, and learn how to become a smart camper with the best advice and tips for your first time camping. Become Familiar With Your Gear New campers usually wait until they get to the campground before they try out new gear. It’s not uncommon to watch campers fumble for hours trying to figure out how to set up a tent. Practice really does make perfect. Set up tents in your backyard before taking them camping. Check the operation of lanterns and camp stoves to make sure they work properly. Try your sleeping bag one night on the living room floor to see how well you sleep in it. Buy a Tent That Is Big Enough New campers frequently find themselves in a crowded tent. Make space and comfort a priority in your choice of tents (unless you’re backpacking). Most tents fit in a car trunk, so size and weight aren’t a major concern. For family camping get a tent with a capacity rated two higher than the number of campers that will use it. So for a family of two, get a 4-person tent, for a family of four a 6-person tent, and so on. Make (and Use) a Checklist New campers often overlook a checklist. It’s no fun getting to the campground and finding out that you forgot something. Stay organized and make sure nothing is left behind by keeping a camping gear checklist. Use it while packing and check off each item. Update and revise the list as needed. If something breaks or wears out, replace it. If something really doesn’t get used, take it off the list. Arrive at the Campground Early New campers will probably be unfamiliar with campground amenities and rules. You’ve never been camping, how are you supposed to know? Arrive early enough to give yourself time to learn the campground layout. Make your campground neighbors happy and set up camp during daylight 56

hours. It’s much easier when you can see what you’re doing. Plan Your Meals New campers don’t always put enough thought into meal planning. Figure out how many meals you’ll be making for how many people, and put together some menu ideas. Then do your grocery shopping a day or two before departure so that the food will be fresh. Observe Campground Rules New campers may not realize that there is no real privacy in a campground. Sound travels so well that you can usually hear campers whispering at the next site. One noisy campsite can keep dozens of campers from a good sleep. Please observe quiet hours. The little privacy you have is limited to your campsite. Respect the space that other campers have chosen, and don’t walk through another campsite to get someplace. Learn to Reverse Your RV in Advance Don’t embarrass yourself by putting on a show for the other campers while trying to back your RV into your campsite. Bring Sufficient Clothing Camping is all about being prepared. New campers often neglect to bring enough clothes. Remember, not all campgrounds have laundry facilities. Weather conditions can also demand different attire. You’ll like a rain suit in case it rains, a swimsuit for a dip, and maybe a sweater or jacket for those cool evenings. Avoid Severe Weather If you are a glutton for punishment, try putting up a tent in the rain. Camping is about relaxing outdoors, so don’t go camping if you know there is going to be foul weather. There is nothing more uncomfortable than sitting in your tent for two days while rain pounds your tent and the wind keeps laying it down on top of you. Right after a storm could be just as bad with rain-soaked campsites and mud. Camp Close to Home Just in case, don’t travel far for your first camping trip. You may find out after a night of sleeping on the ground that you are not cut out to be a camper. You may have gear trouble and find yourself without a tent. You may run out of food. The weather may change for the worse. Any number of things could happen to make you want to go home early. News@TownAndCountryGazette.com || MAY 6, 2021
