The full length musical, written and provided by NASA’s Jet Propulsion Lab, was performed by fourth through sixth grade students at her school. A public recording is available on YouTube. Treff reports “For weeks we heard the kids singing science songs. Excitement was electric from teachers, kids, and parents alike. We had so many parents comment that it was the best play they had ever seen at our school.” Treff was ecstatic that not only did students excel in their artistic abilities, but they retained and PHOTO CJUSD mastered the included Science After completing Endeavor’s 5-course Certificate in STEM Leadership program, earning an additional endorsement as a Distinguished STEM Educator, Cooley Ranch Elementary 3rd grade NASA, cont. on next pg. teacher Star Treff reports that it is her students who are benefiting the most from her training.
Valley College math instr uctor, CHS grad publishes book on global travels
“
My general philosophy is, have I been? No? Okay, then — let’s go,” Dr. Jeremiah Gilbert said with a laugh. An avid traveler, the San Bernardino Valley College (SBVC) mathematics professor has carried a wide-angle lens through more than 80 countries. He enjoys chronicling the places around him — both at home and abroad. This year, a compilation of his circular photographs was published in the local anthology San Bernardino, Singing, and his book of travel tales was published, titled Can’t Get There From Here: Fifty Tales of Travel.

Inland Empir e students invited to par ticipate in Aguilar’s ar t competit ion
R
ep. Pete Aguilar announced that his office will once again participate in the Congressional Art Competition, an annual showcase of art from high school students from across the country. The competition allows high school students in every congressional district to submit works of art to their local Congressional offices. The chosen winner in each district is then displayed in the US Capitol for a year. High school students NASA content as well. The inspiration for the musical came from Treff’s participation in Endeavor course The Arts in STEM: Advancing Meaningful Integration with Dr. Kathryn “Annie” Arnone. Treff describes the course as one of the powerful learning moments she experienced in the Endeavor program, along with opportunities to interact with a variety of NASA professionals who specialized in various STEM fields. Her favorite was working with Dr. Brandon Rodriguez, an Education Specialist at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Lab. After working with Dr. Rodriguez in Endeavor courses, Treff reached out to him and asked him to lead a professional development for the teachers at her school. She is grateful to Dr. Rodriguez and the Endeavor program for bringing this unique experience to her colleagues. Treff chose the program because she sought opportunities to stay connected well beyond her studTravels town in which he was born — San Bernardino, Calif. A graduate of Colton High School at the age of 15, Gilbert’s academic journey kept him bound to the Valley as he was too young to move away from home for university. He enrolled at SBVC before transferring on to California State University, San Bernardino where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics. He later earned a Master of Arts in Mathematics from University of California, Riverside and a Ph.D. in Education from Capella University. He returned to SBVC professionally as a part-time instructor, where he taught classes yearround. In 2005, he became a fulltime instructor. With the perk of having summers off, he booked his first trip abroad. In 2006, he celebrated his thirty-fifth birthday on the Great Wall of China on his way to Tibet. When he first began traveling, Gilbert used an all-purpose lens on his camera, a 28–30 mm.
who live in California’s 31st Congressional District are eligible to enter by submitting their work to Rep. Aguilar’s office by April 16th, 2021. “The Congressional Art competition provides a showcase for Inland Empire students to show how talented they are, and to have their work displayed alongside the work of their peers from across the country. I look forward to seeing the submissions this year, and ies and be included in as many professional development opportunities as possible – something that educators in the Endeavor community take full advantage of. Treff prides herself in being a lifelong learner and after thorough research she decided that the Endeavor STEM Teaching Certificate Project was where she needed to be. Treff also found the structure of the Endeavor program to be highly conducive to full time educators as it is designed to work with every educators’ particular teaching assignment. She was hesitant to take on the program at first as she knew she had a huge teaching load and wondered if she was overcommitting herself. Instead of the Endeavor program being a burden, Treff found the courses to be flexible and more of a support for her teaching, by incorporating course materials and strategies into her classroom and getting real-time results. For example, Treff took the course Life and Marine Science: Tracking Live Marine Animals with Dr. Meghan Marrero. This course in-

spired an ocean focused unit where students made posters about working to save turtles. Treff and her students organized a beach clean-up day at Huntington Beach in California to put their learning into practice. After completing Endeavor’s 5course Certificate in STEM Leadership program, earning an additional endorsement as a Distinguished STEM Educator, Treff reports that it is her students who are benefiting the most from her training. She has had multiple students who have won district and county science fairs and she even had one student who was so inspired she applied for and won a scholarship to attend Space Camp. Treff shares “I would highly recommend this program to anyone considering extending their knowledge of STEM and preparing to become future ready for themselves and their students. I truly love the Endeavor program and I look forward to all of the continued opportunities I will have with Endeavor to further my professional teaching practice.”

can bend the lines in interesting ways and create really cool effects,” Gilbert said. “It posed an interesting challenge for me because I both had to learn how to shoot, but also how to edit. Did you know you can crop a circle?”
As curious as they come, Gilbert invested in wide-angle lenses — the wider, the better. Eventually, he picked up an 8 mm circular fisheye lens, the widest angle possible, which literally captures a circular photograph. The style is uncommon and used mostly for medical purposes, but it posed an interesting challenge to him. He learned how to stand without capturing both his feet and stomach. He learned the best conditions to shoot in — “Never a sunny day,” he advised. He learned that the best subjects to shoot were things that were already circular or straight lines.
Gilbert submitted 14 of these circular photographs to the local anthology, San Bernardino, Singing, and all were accepted. The result is a world traveler’s wide-angle perspective on his hometown’s crown jewel.

Eventually, he became more comfortable with shooting and noticed something. “As I was going along I realized I didn’t zoom in a lot, but there were many times I wished I could pull back more,” Gilbert explained.
While he took the lens abroad a few times, he found that the best place to shoot was SBVC’s campus, especially the newer modern architecture that features clean, straight lines.
Obituar y
Gilbert’s website, jeremiahgilbert.com, has always featured photography from abroad. During a trip to London in 2019, he began working on a section of short stories as well — travel tales, he called them. He wanted to share the mishaps and funny occurrences that can only happen during international travel. He captured the memory of having to be smuggled across a checkpoint in Bolivia due to miscommunication. “We left our passports behind, knowing we weren’t going out of the country,” he explained. “No one told us we would need passports to go
through checkpoints.” He penned the story of his 40th birthday in Paris — a lovely celebration until a pickpocket swiped his money and identification. With the robbery occurring on July 3 and the U.S. Embassy closed on July 4, Gilbert barely had time to acquire a passport before his flight left Paris on July 5. He worked on these travel tales a little bit at a time, he said. Then in February 2020 while his wife was visiting family in Beijing, news of the novel coronavirus broke. Gilbert’s instinct told him to book a backup flight for her. He was glad he did when her March flight was canceled with no promise of a reschedule until May — but then the backup flight was canceled. With a resolve to not see his wife stranded abroad, Gilbert reunited his family just in the knick of time. “I’m not sure we would have been able to get her after we did,” he admitted. The original essay, "Can’t Get There From Here" chronicles his family’s reunion and closes what is now the book by the same title.
Street Greeter. Beau was also a faithful congregant of Centerpoint Church in Colton. The memorial will be held at Montecito Memorial Park and Mortuary 3520 E Washington St, Colton, CA 92324 on April 5th, 2021 at 9:30 am. The graveside will follow shortly thereafter. In lieu of flowers, family is asking to please donate to MECP2 research: www.mecp2d.org/donate. With his wife safely home, Gilbert made the most of the historic global pandemic by writing 50 travel tales and publishing them in September 2020. His book Can’t Get There From Here: Fifty Tales of Travel is available on Amazon.com. Thus far, Gilbert has seen 85 countries. (His wife’s one rule is that she has to stay one country ahead of him; she sits at 86.) But for him, there is really no place like Southern California. “I’m one of those rare native southern Californians,” he laughs. “I know this area backward and forward. I love the diversity of it, how multicultural it is, and also how much access we have to different landscapes.” With LAX nearby, he knows that any destination he can imagine is just a flight or two away, and during times like these when he can’t travel? “We have the mountains, desert and beach all within a twohour drive.” “It’s everything I need when I’m not traveling.”

San Ber nardino Symphony offers all-inclusive second chance season The San Bernardino Symphony (SBSO) has received a number of calls from folks asking if they can still purchase season tickets even though the season has begun. Some said they had heard about the February concert and wished they had seen it. Some said after a year of Zoom meetings, they now felt comfortable navigating the digital environment. A few even said although they were originally reticent to try an online concert, they'd heard it was so unique and exciting, they were now ready but wondered if we could still accommodate them. If you experienced something similar and are interested in obtaining a season subscription, read on because we have a solution for you! (And if you already have your season ticket, thank you! We look forward to entertaining again you later this month!) You've Got a Second Chance... and here's how it works Because the first three concerts this season are digital, we can access them after the original air dates and make them available to you. So when you purchase your second chance season subscrip-
tion, you'll not only receive tickets to the upcoming concerts, you'll also receive ticketed links to any past digital concerts! This, of course, is something we never could have done before; but this is indeed a time of unprecedented change, and frankly, why not make a little musical lemonade out of the lemons we've all been tossed? So here's what you can do: Go to our website and check out the video in the SBSO News section of our homepage. It includes some footage from the February concert so you can get an idea of what to expect. Then, to obtain your tickets, click on 2021 Season When the SUBSCRIBE TODAY page comes up, click on the red PURCHASE SEASON TICKETS bar and simply follow the prompts If you are a previous season ticket holder - or if you just would prefer talking with a person to select your seats for the live concerts - give us a call at (909) 381-5388. We're happy to help you because we want you to experience all five of these amazing concerts, and season subscriptions are the most
economical way to do that! Our Goal, Your Gain The first three virtual performances are recorded live, then digitally remastered in ultra high definition. These events are designed to maximize the audience viewing experience in an entirely new way, including close up views of the maestro and orchestra, interviews with artistic contributors, and exclusive behind the scenes material available only in this digital format. This season also features some other special surprises, including the addition of our very own San Bernardino Symphony Ballet Ensemble under the direction of noted choreographer Jonathan Sharp. Shared Symphony Board of Directors President Dean McVay: “Our deeply held goal is to make a lasting impact on people in the community at a time we all need it most.” Dean speaks for all of us who care about the arts in our community and beyond. And that in-
cludes many of you who have donated to sponsor our concerts and outreach initiatives like Classroom to Concert Hall which annually provides ticket scholarships to hundreds of local K-12 students and their families. Tickets cover only a small portion of the cost of each production. Your generous concert sponsor-
ships and donations are needed all season long to keep the music alive and accessible to all. So when you attend the concert - either digitally or in person - we hope you'll note the growing list of supporters and, should you see one of those kind folks - perhaps even at a future Zoom meeting we hope you'll acknowledge their support.
