Two years ago, she started help ing Dr G with his trash clean up project Every week, she has joined with the G Team to clean up various city walkways, medi ans, the Paseo, bus stops, as well as freeway entrances/exits “It’s a good way to help the community,” says Norma, who squeezes in time in the early morning hours before starting her day

The bougainvillea plants are an other G Team project which fo cuses on bringing color and “freshness” to the dry areas in South Colton As time permits, Norma helps maintain the plants by bringing in containers of water 1 2 times per week The project now has 20 plants between the railroad track and Hert Street, and is starting to show nice color to those traveling along So La Cadena Norma has three children, two which have graduated from Colton Joint Unified District, and one younger son who is attending Grimes Elementary School “I like to support my kids and be a good example,” reflected Norma when asked about her school in volvement Over the years, Norma has communicated regularly with the teachers, and has volunteered to help in the classroom In addi tion, she has helped with ROTC, girls basketball, and has served on ELAC and School Site Council The coming year, she will assist with the Cub Scouts, a group which her son has shown interest in joining Another community interest for Norma is to get information out to residents, especially for the Span ish speaking For that reason, she created and administers the “Co munidad de Colton” page on Facebook Through that media platform, Norma informs the residents of school activities, community events and local news After her first year, she has 216 followers

The U S Financial and Banking Information Infrastructure Com mittee (FBIIC) states that flood ing is the nation's most frequent and costly natural disaster, repre senting 90% of all natural disas ters in the U S FBIIC adds that you don't need to be in a high risk, flood prone area to be affected Nearly 25% of flood insurance claims come from moderate to low risk areas 2 "While you can't predict when a natural disaster will strike or what shape that disaster will take, you can prepare to minimize its effects on your home, your family, and your life," says Isaacson FEMA offers a variety of no cost tools3 to help you evaluate your risk, create a communication plan, sign up for alerts, put together an emergency kit customized to your family's needs, protect important documents, and more In addition to following FEMA's guidelines on disaster readiness, SERVPRO professionals in the Colton area encourage property owners to consider using the SERVPRO READY app4 to store essential contact and property in formation electronically where it can be accessed in seconds with a mobile device "This is a no cost tool available to all homeowners," these professionals explain, "but local business owners who desig nate their local SERVPRO as their disaster mitigation and restoration provider will also benefit from a no cost assessment of their facil ity along with help completing a comprehensive Emergency READY Profile® (ERP) to be stored in the READY app u t

This year the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is urg ing home and business owners to think of disaster preparedness to help protect their families and the legacies they have worked so hard to create 1 FEMA designates each September as National Prepared ness Month, a time to prepare or review your family and business emergency plans for surviving and then managing the aftermath of an unexpected disaster

Pepper Bough “Last school year, we garnered more page views than the publica tion garnered in the previous decade The student’s success has led us to place our first advertisement this semester, and I encourage businesses, organizations, and agencies to look into placing an ad with us I want to be clear that this is not a charity, we are a well or ganized news publication, and our website has many eyeballs on it,” concluded Dollins Another standout attribute of the Pepper Bough is its quick news turnaround For example, the high school held its first pep rally on August 26th, and two hours after it ended a story covering the event was already published online, making it an excellent resource for parents to keep up with campus news and activities by Dr G (Dr Luis S González), community writer

On Friday, August 19, Council Member Dr G (Dr Luis S González) presented the CITY TALK “Community Impact Award” to community volunteer, Norma Gallardo a long time resi dent of Colton, and well known community volunteer Norma has many interests and can be seen around the city at local events, cleaning up trash, planting bougainvillea plants, and helping with many school and community activities

Working under the banner of CITY TALK, a community impact force, these efforts have actu ally started eight years ago, but have evolved into a “recognized” community group of volunteers known as the “G Team ” The event last Thursday night was dedicated to celebrating these efforts and to recognize the individuals who are the foun dational members of the G Team; Nellie Cortez, Sharon Hughbanks, Darby Osnaya, Pat Martinez, Christina Perris, Rosanne Reyes, Norma Gal lardo, and of course, Dr G, founder of CITY TALK and a well known community advocate “So far, the responses to the G Team have been positive, and the results have been excellent,” says Rosanne Reyes, a foundational member who elaborated, “This group works hard to help im prove the community ” The first ever G Team member, Nellie Cortez, who is 83, added, “I re ally enjoy helping to clean up the community ” Nellie was also the first recipient of the CITY TALK “Community Impact Award” for her long time devotion to the trash clean up project and in volvement in the community

This was a great way to celebrate the Third An niversary of the G Team, which started in 2019, just after Dr G retired from teaching The goal was to en gage in community outreach with a hands on ap proach For the last three years, dozens of individuals and groups within the community have joined in with Dr G from time to time, to work on projects, such as the trash clean up proj ect, the bougainvillea planting project, and the picnic table painting project

All three of these projects continue to be ongoing, with plans cur rently being made for providing support for our beloved senior citizens

In exchange, the Lakers are looking for either sharp shooter Buddy Hield and rim protector Myles Turner from the Pacers, or Mike Conley and stretch four Bojan Bogdanovich from the Jazz

By Caden Henderson

By acquiring Patrick Beverley, the Lakers have opened a whole new can of worms for the league to see But, most importantly, they showed their cards and seemed to confirm that their ideal scenario on opening night is not to have Russell Westbrook on the roster

Their return for Russ could make or break their sea son, and we will have to see in this next month and a half if they can pull something off to make the roster a championship caliber one

Sometimes the NBA just feels like one wild re ality TV show, and it sure felt like it this past week when the Los Angeles Lakers announced they were trading for veteran defensive specialist Patrick Beverley in exchange for Talen Horton Tucker and Stanley Johnson who will be headed to Utah Now, at face value, this trade seems pretty sim plistic The Lakers get much needed defense at the PG spot as well as veteran leadership while also clearing Hor ton Tucker ’s contract from their books next offsea son However, if you’ve been around the NBA the past few years, you know there’s a bigger storyline to this That story line is current Lakers guard Russell Westbrook and his rivalry with Beverley So, let’s dig into what this trade means for West brook and his future, or maybe lack thereof, with the Lakers

To sum things up, the Lakers are offering to both teams Russell Westbrook and the teams 2027 first round pick (and possibly a 2029 first round pick if they feel the trade makes them a contender)

The answer is simple, Westbrook is the odd man out A few hours after the trade was announced, new re ports started circulating that the Lakers are heavily looking to the Indiana Pacers and the Utah Jazz to be a trade partner for Westbrook

However, after reports that the market for Kyrie Irv ing was officially closed, many fans thought West brook would still be a Laker come opening night That is until this trade happened Immediately, fans on Twitter made their jokes about Beverley and Westbrook being on the same team given their rivalry that sparked in 2013 when Bever ley, seemingly intentionally, took out Westbrook’s leg in the playoffs and ended his season It’s obvious that these two on the same team won’t work Surely, the Lakers understand that So, why trade for Beverley?

There is also the possibility that the Knicks get in volved if they can acquire Donovan Mitchell from the Jazz, in which case the Lakers could get another shooter such as Evan Fournier, but it seems we are a long way away from that Now, there is always the small chance that the orig inal Beverley trade is expanded and neither he nor Westbrook suits up for the Lakers this season, but there are no signs that point to that Beverley is a competitor and a fighter, traits the Lak ers heavily lacked last season Surely they would not give up two solid young pieces just to ship him off But, you never know in the NBA

It is no secret that the Lakers have been shopping Westbrook to virtually the entire league all summer long His ginormous contract simply does not match his production and he is not a good fit alongside the Lakers dynamic duo of LeBron James and Anthony Davis
