PHOTO MANNY SANDOVAL Kevin Lyons Inland Empire 48 Hour Film Project producer and SBVC film professor, teaching his students how to operate a camera Film Contest given a character name, a specific prop, and a line that needs to be included in the film,” said In land Empire producer Kevin Lyons This type of competition, where teams are cast ing, writing a script, shooting, scoring, editing, and exporting, is not only a great space for novice filmmakers to learn but also an excellent way for professionals to grow within their craft by taking risks “This competition is a great experience for am ateur filmmakers to feel what it’s like to make an actual short film with limited resources You have to maximize your time to direct the cast and crew which indicates how things work on a real life movie set For professionals, it’s the perfect op portunity to test new gear, locations, and crew if it doesn’t work out, there’s no major consequence But if it does work out, it could be the start of a feature film or a series,” Lyons For those in San Bernardino, Colton, Rialto and neighboring cities that may not have a team, a slew of Inland Empire 48 Hour Film Project net working events will be held at San Bernardino Valley College in the weeks to come “For those who would like to participate in the competition, I’d suggest attending our forthcom ing workshops like the IE Filmmaker Conference on September 17th at 9 AM or the 48 Hour Audi tion Event on September 24th at 1 PM both in MC 142 at SBVC,” Lyons said Teams should typically consist of a screenwriter, cinematographer, camera operator, a production sound mixer, an editor, and cast and crew “My personal experience participating in the In land Empire 48 Hour Film Project was valuable because I met great people I worked with outside and beyond the 48 hour competition It grew my network and made me a better filmmaker by test ing my boundaries and figuring out that we can do much in a short time There is something about seeing a film that you created on the big screen that pumps people up; it makes you hungry for more,” concluded Lyons

KVCR called Rhythm Lounge “This investment will improve our com munities quality of life and increase op portunities for our youth by expanding KVCR in studio training for students headed into journalism and media ca reers SBVC is one of the few community colleges in the nation that operates both an NPR radio and a PBS TV affiliate It’s vital to keep advocating and expanding this asset in our community,” concluded Reyes Mariana Lapizco, an SBVC student who has benefitted from an FTVM funded KVCR internship, said learning from the organization’s professionals equips her to be highly prepared for her next endeavor an acceptance into USC’s film program and a career in media “I started SBVC as a business major be cause my family told me to pursue a se cure major But last fall, I entered into the IE 48 Hours Film Project, a challenge where you write, shoot, and edit an entire short film in 48 hours, and that was my clicking moment,” said Lapizco After the film contest, she asked herself why she was not pursuing film full time; now, she is both a film and business major “I decided to apply for this internship last spring, and it has been life changing ever since Working with professionals in my internship has given my peers and I the confidence to continue striving for our dreams It has allowed us to get our hands on high tech equipment, preparing us for a future in the film industry In ad dition, KVCR is a great platform for communities across the Inland region as we highlight social justice issues that af fect us all,” concluded Lapizco Like many in the community, the col lege’s Chancellor Diana Rodriguez ex pressed the importance of public media organizations and strong leaders like Reyes “When Reyes was elected, she first asked me what I could do to help our stu dents? What can I do to help our commu nity? Then, when I became chancellor last year, she asked me the same thing So I thought about those questions for a long time, and then I answered, KVCR,” said Rodriguez

The San Bernardino Community Col lege District owns the news organization, which has affiliations with PBS and NPR “KVCR struggled financially for several years, and its future was uncertain While we knew we would always have KVCR, we were unsure of its programming Can you imagine our children turning on PBS and Big Bird was gone? Can you imag ine turning on the radio in the morning and NPR News not being there? I could n’t bear the thought of that, and as al ways, the Majority Leader stepped up for the Inland Empire and fought in Sacra mento to bring $15 million to help us here at KVCR,” concluded Rodriguez

The State’s “California for All Animals” initia tive has awarded San Bernardino $180,000 to fund dedicated volunteer and foster coordinator positions By adding these positions to the department, An imal Services will be able to increase the number of volunteers providing care to the animals at the shelter and grow the number of foster homes for pets in the community “This will have a tremendous effect on the indi vidual attention the pets under our care receive,” said Animal Services Director Kris Watson “Our Shelter volunteers and foster families make a huge difference for our animals These new positions will enable us to expand the number of volunteers and foster caretakers ”

These funds will help increase the number of pets returned to their owners through expanded bilingual notifications of lost pets at the shelter, free microchipping in the field, and other assis tance, such as funding minor fence repairs at homes to keep pets on their property

Both grant awards are managed by the UC Davis Koret School of Shelter Veterinary Medicine

The Bolt Up 2022 2023 campaign is soon to strike in what is an all time level stacked AFC West

However, barring uncontrollable events like injuries, the Chargers look set to get back to the playoffs and possibly even win there, as they look to get Justin Herbert his first playoff appearance of his career

The core group of star players such as Justin Herbert, Kennan Allen, and Austin Ekeler are back for re demption and new stars Khalil Mack and JC Jackson bring what many fans believe are just what the Charg ers need to make a playoff run

By Caden Henderson

So let’s dive into everything going on, and what could transpire this season

As for the guys he’s throwing to, they’re elite too Kennan Allen is probably the best route runner in the league and if you call his number, he’s going to get open, and he’s going to make a play The Bolts also managed to resign deep ball threat Mike Williams Williams has an elite ability to make acrobatic catches and can be a viable red zone threat due to all the attention Allen gets As for Herbert’s back field partner, RB Austin Ekeler does the job and then some The versatile Ekeler is one of the best receiving backs in the league while also being able to go for big runs He’s one of the leagues most beloved players and we’re sure to see plenty of air guitar touchdown celebrations from him this year

But there’s more Elite CB JC Jackson joins Samuel Jr and James to lock down opposing teams receiving cores I mean, Jackson’s IG handle is literally “mr int” He’s going to perform how the Chargers will need him to As for the special teams core that is usually always ranked in the bottom half of the league, Dustin Hop kins proved consistent enough last year as the Kicker and we’ll have to see how the Punter situation pans out but, as long as special teams aren’t losing the team the game, they’ll be fine

Inland Empire Community Newspapers • August 18, 2022 • Page A3

Defense has been a problem for the Chargers in re cent history due to injuries exposing a lock of depth However, this year has the potential to be different We’ll start with the returners

As for the X factors, WR Jalen Guyton’s elite speed goes perfectly with Herbert’s slingshot of an arm, and Joshua Palmer is expected to improve and get more looks this year And of course there’s LT Rashawn Slater who last year was one of the best rookies in his class The of fense looks ready to go, but the defense has been re tooled and looks ready to help win some games

Talks are reportedly moving along well and there’s no hostility like there can be in these contract talk sit uations, but as of August 14th there’s still no agree ment The Chargers must secure their star safety before they touch the field Week 1 against the Raiders

C a d e n C e n t e r L o s A n g e l e s C h a r g e r s 2 0 2 2 2 0 2 3 s e a s o n p r e v i e w

First off, Khalil Mack The star LB needs no intro duction Handling Khalil Mack and Joey Bosa is going to give opposing O Line’s nightmares Teams can longer double team Joey Bosa unless they want Mack reigning down pressure every snap on their QB

There’s plenty of star power to win games without having an elite special teams unit

Speaking of the field, let’s talk what about what will happen on it with the offense It all revolves around the teams star QB Justin Herbert Herbert has broke record after record his first 2 seasons He has shown to have one of the strongest and most accurate arms in all of the NFL He also has shown great improvisation ability and, with his 6’6 236 frame, he’s also shown the ability to get some yardage with his feet while not risking getting injured

First off, the Chargers have to reach an agreement on a contract extension with Derwin James before the season starts, and he has to be in uniform Week 1 against the Raiders

Assuming Derwin James gets his extension and plays, he will join Joey Bosa and Asante Samuel Jr as some notable guys who Chargers fans are familiar with to come back and look to contribute But of course, the pickups the defense got was what made headlines around the league

After a heart crushing end to last season, the Los Angeles Chargers have returned to the field for the preseason And this season for Bolt Up nation is one of hope and excitement, which fans like me have not felt in a long time

Repeating the same old conver sation about drugs and alcohol may seem daunting Yet, enter ing college or university is a critical time to have this conversation College age adults are in the position to make adult choices and decisions They may overlook the dangers of binge drinking, alcohol use, or illicit drug use

“It has been our experience that when parents are equipped with actionable knowledge and accurate information, they are better equipped to speak to their kids about the dangers of drugs and alcohol,” said Marcel Gemme of Addicted Org There is good and bad information available, yet it is critical that they re ceive information from a reliable source Clearly Show You Care About Their Well Being It is ok not to like some of the deci sions they make, and it is ok to be upset Yet, it is essential to show them you care about their well being

There are consequences of underage drinking and drug use Try not to lec ture or threaten but paint a clear pic ture about what they could lose For example, binge drinking and drug use lead to serious academic problems Approximately one in four students experience academic difficulties from drinking alcohol Other consequences include assault, sexual assault, im paired driving, or posting damaging posts on social media

Two way communication consists of the following:

Unfortunately, at this age, parents can feel they can no longer empower their children to make responsible deci sions This could not be further from the truth, as parents significantly in fluence their child’s decision making Here are some tips for parents to help them empower their college age chil dren to avoid the dangers of drug and alcohol use Contribute to Their Skills and Strate gies for Avoiding Underage Drinking and Drug Use

• Response If done effec tively, this would be more questions, opinions, and any concerns they have about drug and alcohol use Before they go out on their own and begin taking more responsibility in life, reinforce open communication They should know they have a safe environment they can turn to and peo ple they can talk to Overall, listen to them and respect their opinion while offering informa tion that is meaningful and balanced Avoid emotion or drama to help them feel empowered to make healthy choices College or university is a big step and involves big decisions Keep supporting and empowering them along the way *These are not the opinions of Inland Empire Community News

The historic St John Bosco Mission will host the Mi Ranchito Fiesta on Saturday, August 20th, 3:00 p m to 11:00 p m , at 28991 Merris Street, Highland “We believe that our event remains as the most authentic Mexican fiesta in the Inland Empire The bbq booth will feature a deli cious bbq plate and burritos It will be deco rated with palms and flowers to capture the look of years gone by,” said Tina Zavala Other booths will display colorful banners and paper flowers that were prepared by both the ladies and children of the church

The first few weeks of college or univer sity are critical Underage drinking and drug use significantly impact stu dents, their families, and college com munities

In addition, fentanyl overdose is a real threat Fentanyl laced drugs are ex tremely dangerous and include co caine, cannabis, methamphetamine, and pain medication Parents should try to explain these consequences in a way that relates to their children and how they could im pact their life Always Keep the Lines of Commu nication Open Two way communication is vital, es pecially when they enter college or university Most often, the topic of drugs and alcohol is avoided, or par ents make threats or cast judgment Doing this will crumble the line of communication

• Sender The parent conveys their concern for their child’s health and well being

If your child is to make informed deci sions about drugs and alcohol, they need a reliable source of information Social media is not a reliable source of information

Even if you believe your child does not want to drink or experiment with drugs, college peer pressure, parties, socializing, and trying to fit in be comes powerful motivators Discuss how they would deal with a decision to use drugs or alcohol when faced with it Ask them if they have any questions or concerns about what to do or how drugs and alcohol may impact their life It is not uncommon to role play some scenarios, go over possible responses and let them know they can contact you whenever in doubt Relate to per sonal experiences and share the out comes to help them understand the consequences Demonstrate You Provide an Excel lent Source of Information About Drugs and Alcohol

The San Bernardino Police Department offers the following tips to stay safe around schools:

• Slow down and follow the speed limit

If you are behind a school bus with a stop sign and flashing red lights, drivers need to stop so students can safely get on and off the bus Drivers must remain stopped while the red lights are on Drivers in both directions must stop on any two lane road without a median or a center turn lane

• Adhere to school policies and procedures for drop ping off and picking up students

As students head back to the classroom, the San Bernardino Police Department reminds parents and residents to follow the speed limit and be extra careful driving through school zones “Please drive like it is your child, grandchild, niece or nephew walking or riding their bike to school,” Sgt Jeff Harvey said “Pick up and drop off times can be hectic, but it’s important to be patient and stay safe as children are getting to and from school ”

Whenever possible, avoid blocking the crosswalk while waiting to make a right hand turn

S

• For parents with children walking or biking to school, teach them safe walking and riding behaviors, such as looking both ways before crossing the street, using sidewalks when available, and crossing at marked crosswalks with stop signs or signals
