Construction on the half mile long project is an ticipated to begin in September with an expected completion date of June 2023 The City will be using Regional Circulation System funds to pay for the project State Street currently does not exist between Foothill Boulevard and 16th Street San Bernardino ultimately plans on extending State Street to Foothill Boulevard, a total distance of over 1 5 miles, over a series of additional phases “These phases will include the construction of two bridges to complete the connection to Foothill,” said San Bernardino Deputy Director of Public Works/City Engineer “Due to the an ticipated cost, additional funding would be needed ”

Once the historic building was under the owner ship of La Confederacion of Mexican American Organizations, Inc in 1971, it underwent a name change, becoming Casa Ramona which provided social services to the predominantly Hispanic pop ulated community Estrada, now 81, attended the elementary school in the 1940s before she began a 40 year stint serv ing as Casa Ramona’s executive director in 1981, bringing the once exhausted and in debt center into a surplus of fiscal funds

Earning the prestigious fellowship required participa tion in numerous workshops and interviews, and the submission of a comprehensive prompt book to the KCACTF respondents, filled with everything from scripts to reports

She credits Eric Mulz, professor and technical director of the CSUSB theatre arts program, for nominating her for the fellowship and guiding her not only through the process, but throughout her academic journey “He really took me under his wing,” she says, espe cially when her first stage management project at CSUSB took place during the pandemic when the uni versity was primarily virtual “He had daily Zoom meet ings with me to make sure I knew what needed to be done He also had weekly updates with me He would ask, ‘How can I help you improve your craft?’”

“On July 29th, 2020, the boarded up and fenced Casa Ramona caught fire due to transients occupy ing the space which destroyed the building The remnants of the fire debris contained asbestos and lead, which is why the work of the DTSC experts is so important Our community is truly benefitting from their remediation efforts,” concluded Estrada

As of August 22nd, a remediation date has not been set For more information, visit casaramonainc org

While the building that offered senior meals, job training, affordable child care, and medical and be havioral health services is currently no longer, many in the community still remember the impact Casa Ramona had on the San Bernardino commu nity and beyond “Casa Ramona has been a pillar in our commu nity for decades, organizing health fairs, providing services for children and seniors, and promoting cultural events We look forward to Casa Ramona reopening its doors to our community as it has since the early 1970s,” said Assembly Majority Leader Eloise Gomez Reyes

The City of San Bernardino Animal Services De partment has been awarded two grants totaling $200,000 to help support their efforts to grow their volunteer network and return lost pets to their own ers Pointing to her bright pink hair and facial piercings, Is abel Peña says the theatre arts community is a place where people can freely express themselves from those who identify as LGBTQ to “military kids” like herself “What I enjoy the most is that you can just be your self,” says the Cal State San Bernardino theatre arts stu dent as she gestures to her unique dye job “It’s an outlet to express yourself in ways some other people may not be able to and it’s an escape for a lot of people ” Growing up on military bases, Peña was homeschooled and used theatre arts as an outlet What started as a hobby on stage eventually brought her to working be hind the scenes on theatre productions when she at tended high school in Victorville, Calif Not one to follow the crowd, she accepted her drama teacher ’s invitation to work backstage rather than be an actor something that all the other students wanted to do “I’ve always been that person to try something else,” she explains It was there she found her passion for stage manage ment working with everything from lighting to sound, set designs to props used for the show Discovering and following her love for stage manage ment has led her to major in theatre arts with a de sign/technical emphasis and become the first CSUSB student to earn the Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival (KCACTF) fellowship in stage man agement, both regionally and nationally “Knowing that I’m the first one to win this, it feels re ally good to put our department on the map,” she says, expressing that the shock of it all still lingers “I knew how big it was and we’ve never had anyone from CSUSB win before Knowing that, I felt very over whelmed, but I was proud because I worked hard to get where I am ”

“It’s very exciting just because going in, I didn’t have any expectations of winning It was my first time even participating in the festival,” she says “So, winning it overall was ultimately a huge surprise ”

In addition to Mulz, Peña is grateful for her mentor Sa vanha Moore ’20, CSUSB theatre arts alumna When Peña was a freshman, she assisted Moore in a CSUSB production when Moore was a senior “Isabel was a great assistant,” Moore recalls “She was willing to learn anything and everything she could and wasn’t afraid of taking on a task and jumping in to lend a helping hand when needed Since then, I’ve been for tunate to be a part of her journey and still be someone she can come to for anything ”

The KCACTF fellowship has brought Peña scholar ships and has introduced her to various stage manage ment opportunities In addition to winning, she was invited to the Broadway Stage Management Symposium in New York City in late May She unfortunately was unable to attend in person due to scheduling conflicts, but she was still able to participate virtually “The symposium was really eye opening and really en gaging,” Peña says, noting that Broadway stage man agers came to talk about their experiences and gave the attendees advice The symposium also provided re sources, workshops and panel discussions

“Plus, there’s a lot more to learn in stage manage ment,” she adds Peña is already putting her talent to use and freelanc ing for Art of Acting Studio in Los Angeles She hopes to eventually freelance for more companies in the fu ture, with the dream of eventually working overseas, not only in the theatre realm, but in other avenues, such as music concerts

“The West Side residents of San Bernardino have been waiting for this for a long time,” said Councilmember Kimberly Calvin, who represents the area “Our patience is being rewarded with a great new street that will serve as a major arterial for the entire area and position Ward 6 for more economic development opportunities

Peña, who is president of the university’s theatre club, Players of the Pear Garden, is one of only eight people to be awarded the 2022 stage management fellowship by KCACTF, a national theater program involving 18,000 students annually from colleges and universities across the country

Calvin added, “In order to complete the vision of former Ward 6 Councilwoman Betty Dean An derson, I look forward to collaborating with our state and federal elected officials to secure the funding necessary to complete all phases of the project This is a monumental moment for our Ward and our City ”

“Most times she knows her limitations and exceeds them or works very hard to,” says Mulz, who describes Peña as thoughtful and hardworking “She is learning how to walk that fine line between student and stage manager Isabel is one of the quickest students at be coming a stage manager that I have seen in the last 20 years I’ve been training them ”

“Having those resources, talking to actual Broadway stage managers, asking about their experiences, and talking to other stage managers, it was amazing,” she says “I loved it and I got a lot of information that I will definitely be using ” She hopes to learn even more about the field and plans to obtain her master ’s degree in stage management after she graduates with her bachelor ’s in spring 2023 She acknowledges that stage management is a mostly male dominated industry, which, she says, makes it even more important for her to go further in her education

“Savanha helped me at my time at CSUSB, even in cluding now,” Peña says “She showed me the ways of college stage management and she helped me to cre ate my own way of stage management ”

Stater Br os. Charities and Inland Women Fighting Cancer donate $150,000 to Loma Linda Univer sity Cancer Center

With load management becoming popular and some players lacking the want to play for the USA, we could see another 2004 team very soon, maybe even as soon as the next Olympics Look at Greece

“The Believe Walk is blessed to have the support of a caring community that makes it possible to maintain the level of care at LLU Cancer Center,” they say

Stater Bros Charities and Inland Women Fighting Cancer presented a check for $150,000 to Loma Linda University Cancer Center on Tuesday, August 16 The funds were a portion of those raised at the 14th annual Believe Walk held in October 2021, and will assist patients at LLU Cancer Center with issues related to their cancer diag nosis

But, making the podium wasn’t good enough for USA basketball There was a lack of want to play for the na tion from top stars and that had shown two years earlier in 2002 during the FIBA championships where the USA had placed 6th It was time for change, and 2008 brought that From 2004 to 2008, there was a major power shift in terms of the best players in the world The US best stars now in cluded MVP’s Kobe Bryant and LeBron James, as well as other superstars like Carmelo Anthony and multiple time DPOY Dwight Howard However, the big key in all this was they all signed up to play The USA squad was now stacked for the first time in a long time, and they went to work The team went 5 0 in their pool and set up a date with the, at the time, #2 ranked basketball country in the world, Spain in the gold medal game Spain was in its basketball golden years, as NBA star brothers Marc Gas & Pau Gasol were in their prime, and Spanish legend Rudy Fernandez was one of the greatest EuroLeague players we had seen But, the USA was up to the challenge that gold medal game, as they defeated Spain to complete the redemp tion arc However, there’s another element to this jour ney and hopefully the documentary that should catch everyone’s attention

The “Redeem Team” documentary is sure to bring some great entertainment to the basketball world You can catch it on Netflix this October and witness the story of one of the greatest teams of all time from a never seen point of view

It was expected they would win gold every tournament they were in, but it became clear after their opening game against Puerto Rico where they suffered a 19 point loss that things would not be so easy this time around in Athens

Additionally, the Cancer Center also offers chair massages to patients in the infusion area to help with relaxation and to decrease pain

By Caden Henderson Team USA basketball has had it’s share of elite teams over the years The famous 1992 “Dream Team”, the 2012 team that absolutely dominated en route to gold, but arguably the most important team for the county was the 2008 USA squad that was dubbed the name the “Redeem Team” What were they redeeming? The Olympic squad from 2004 that lost the most games of any USA basketball team and didn’t even make it to the gold medal game Now, in 2022, this teams story will be told like never before thanks to two members of that 2008 team, Dwyane Wade and LeBron James, who have come to gether to executive produce a documentary on the teams journey So, what should we expect to see in this documentary, and how does it relate to today’s national basketball scene? Let’s dive in We already know thanks to reports that there will be some never before seen footage in the documentary This means we’ll get a behind the scenes look at gen erational players like LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, Kobe Bryant, Chris Paul, and Carmelo Anthony that we’ve never seen before But, we also are sure to here about what this teams mission was: restore USA basket ball to its former glory

Leading up to the 2004 Olympics, the USA has domi nated the international basketball scene thanks to having stars like Larry Bird, Magic Johnson, and Micheal Jor dan leading the way

The Believe Walk aims to increase awareness of cancer, support patients and care givers, and survivors, expand treatment, and enhance wellness for those impacted by cancer Last year ’s walk took place virtually and united over 750 participants from near and far This year ’s walk will be returning to an in person event for the first time since 2020

It is important, I think, that American players play in these international tournaments and flex the nations strength in a sport they have been known to dominate

Eventually, the team would suffer to losses against both Argentina and Lithuania which put the US in the bronze medal game where they were at least able to win and make the podium

To date, the partnership between Stater Bros Charities and Inland Women Fighting Cancer has donated over $6 6 million to support programs, services, and equipment to advance cancer care in the Inland Empire

It’s like if Brazilian soccer players just lied down and stopped playing for the nation in World Cup’s The world is getting better, and the USA must stand their ground, and I hope the documentary expresses this

The Believe Walk was created through the partnership of Inland Women Fighting Cancer founding members Cathy Stockton, Annie Sellas, and the late Nancy Varner, along with Stater Bros Charities Fifteen years ago, event co founders and cancer survivors Stockton and Sellas saw the need for quality cancer care in the Inland Em pire They say they are privileged to be able to help people throughout the community facing all cancers thanks to their enduring partnerships with institutions like LLU Cancer Center

“We are thrilled to receive these funds to help provide wellness services to cancer patients at no cost,” said Judy Chatigny, MSN, Loma Linda University Cancer Center executive director For many patients in San Bernardino and Riverside Counties, a cancer diagnosis can present serious economic challenge, Chatigny says As a safety net facility in the re gion, LLU Cancer Center aims to use the donation funds to enable all patients to have equal access to the Cancer Center ’s support services Services include patient navigation services, valet parking, financial assistance pro grams, Stater Bros grocery gift cards, transportation vouchers, wigs and beanies, skincare, support groups, as well as consultations with dietitians, social workers, a chaplain, pharmacists, or psychologists

International stars and countries, like in the 2000’s, are getting stronger and are showing they can matchup with what the USA has to offer

CSUSB mar keting student r ebrands f amil y business, Lindo’s Diner, which is built upon quality ser vice and home cooked Mexican-American meals

For seven years, the restaurant was known as Steak and Burger before Lindo’s Diner successfully executed a rebrand ear lier this year Cal State San Bernardino Marketing Stu dent and Calimesa Resident Rodrigo Salazar felt the previous name was slightly misleading to customers, as the restaurant’s menu was much more diverse, not limited to steaks and burgers “Initially, I planned a rebrand before the pandemic, which didn’t pan out the way I anticipated, but earlier this year was a per fect time Looking at our restaurant from a marketing perspective, I knew that the name Steak and Burgers was subjective So I recommended renaming it Lindo’s Diner, after my dad, since he’s the backbone of our family, the business, and most impor tantly, the cook,” said Salazar

“Our chile verde omelet and chilaquiles are always a hit during breakfast In addi tion, our bacon avocado and swiss cheese chicken sandwich, chicken fried steak, and fried zucchini are popular dishes during lunch and dinner,” Salazar said When asked what was next for himself and the business, he said finishing up his bachelor of arts degree in marketing in 2023 and expanding the business commu nity relations

“It’s important to support and give back to the community that we serve In the months and years to come, I look forward to becoming even more involved in Cal imesa and Yucaipa and communities across the Inland Empire,” concluded Salazar

As Salazar said, the restaurant is more than just steaks and burgers, it’s also known for its chile verde omelet, chi laquiles, bacon avocado and swiss cheese chicken sandwich, and crispy fried zuc chini, all items cooked to order

Calimesa’s Mexican American style restaurant, Lindo’s Diner, has ac quired a 4 5 star rating with 300 Google reviews and recently underwent a complete rebrand

Along with Salazar, the restaurant is owned and operated by his Father, Lindo and Mother, Maria “Although I had the idea to rebrand be fore I started at CSUSB, the marketing pro gram gave me a boost in understanding the importance of branding In addition, being around, so many other like minded stu dents and professors deepened my outlook on marketing strategies and tactics that have ultimately helped refine my family’s business,” continued Salazar
