Mitla’s Cafe

The Mother Road, known as Route 66, was paved in 1926 to connect struggling economic cities with larger cities to help sell goods and barter.

“Back in the late 1920s, when Route 66 was started, women were discouraged from going to school and typically only attained an eighthgrade education. As a result, women were limited in areas of politics and public life. But Route 66 provided women with an economic opportunity that they never had before, as it helped them earn money and become financially independent,” said Katrina Parks, director of The Women on the Mother Road. After the great depression, which ended in 1939, women lobbied for good roads across the U.S.

While taking a tour of its new playground, it’s evident that the park is family-friendly and features amenities for adults as well.

Route 66 was the result, which begins in Chicago, Illinois and ends at the Santa Monica Pier. It spans 2,400 miles and truly helped San Bernardino’s beloved Mitla’s Cafe capitalize on vehicle traffic, as Route 66 starts as Cajon

Blvd., before becoming Mt Vernon Ave.

“In my docuseries, I had the pleasure of interviewing Mitla’s Cafe Owners Patty and Rochelle Oquendo, who shared how the restaurant’s Founder Lucia Rodriguez was a trailblazer in operating an all-female operated business on Route 66,” said Parks.

Lucia started the restaurant in the 1930s and hired her daughters to help run the business while her husband worked for the Santa Fe Railroad.

“Lucia, the matriarch of her family, pulled all her teenage daughters into helping her run their new family business. She was strict, but her efforts paid off, and the business flourished. In the 1950s, Glen Bell, who owned a hotdog stand across the street, took notice of Mitla’s Cafe’s success. It informed his next business venture, Taco Bell,” concluded Parks. Today, Mitla’s Cafe is still inspired by Lucia’s legacy. The recipes they inherited are attributed to the ongoing success and heritage of the restaurant built at the cusp of Route 66. IEHP Community Resource Center Community News

ith her children grown and raising families of their own, then losing her beloved husband in 2014, Maria found herself experiencing depression and longing for a purpose in life. Her home was missing the family bustle, boundless energy and joyful sounds from years past. “I would cry and cry there,” said Maria, 92, in Spanish about her modest, but empty, longtime San Bernardino home.

As if an answer to her prayers, Inland Empire Health Plan (IEHP) opened their San Bernardino Community Resource Center in 2015 — just steps away from Maria’s tooquiet space.

“Thank God they put this center here,” expressed Maria. “I said to myself, ‘Oh, they couldn’t have put it in a better locaPHOTO IEHP tion. Hyatt Regency Indian Wells is Instagram worthy and fun for the family

his past week my family and I took a short 2 day to vacation to the Hyatt Regency Indian Wells resort. The resort was beautiful and, despite some somewhat uncontrollable bumps in the road, I had a great time and am here to share my experience.

Upon arrival we were met by some of the kindest staff we have ever encountered. They helped us take our luggage out of our car and get us set with our room and key. And by key, I mean a wristband that you wear throughout your stay that when you show to your door unlocks it for you, as well as grants access to the pools, which was very convenient. From the driveway, to the lobby, and all throughout the hotel, you will find several prime photo taking sports perfect for your Instagram feed! Our room was very nice and had more than enough space.

There was a TV, 2 mini-couches, a table and chair, and of course the beds. There was also a refrigerator and microwave to put some of our home brought food and drinks in. As someone with celiac disease, these accommodations are important! After unpacking and settling in, we headed out to the pools. The pools were divided into sections. There was the kids pool, the adult pool, the water slide pool, and the lazy river.

Having all these pools is a great way to cater to different people staying at the hotel. If you have kids, you can go to the kid pool or water slide pool where they’ll be endlessly entertained. If you’re taking a trip with adult friends, you can go to the adult pool and not be disturbed by the chaos and noise on the other side, or float around on the lazy river. In addition to the pools, there were also outside restaurants, a bar, and a table tennis court set up to provide even more entertainment.

their inspiration and motivation of their “why.”

“She fully embodies the reason we provide these services,” said Armendariz. “Knowing we provided connection and heartfelt space for Maria to enjoy her golden years, instead of suffering through them alone in a spiral of isolation, fuels our own purpose. This is what healing and inspiring the human spirit looks like!”

As an added bonus, Maria brings smiles to everyone she encounters, always engaging with IEHP team members and fellow community residents.

“Eventually, she was very involved with whoever walked through the door,” said IEHP San Bernardino Community Resource Center Team Member Marjorie Chavez. “It’s been amazing to see how everyone welcomes Maria and how she embraces everyone who walks through the center.”

PLACE & PURPOSE To watch Maria stepping, turning and moving to the spicy sounds of the latest Zumba® routine – never missing a beat – you’d never know she’s 92.

To witness Maria’s currentday, happy interactions with other people at the center, you’d also never know about the sadness that once filled her heart.

For Maria, the emptiness she felt before IEHP entered her life is gone – and so are the tears.

She now knows IEHP’s San Bernardino Community Resource Center is the place and the purpose she craved all along.

“My whole life has changed here. I feel renewed,” said Maria, then adding an encouraging invitation to other San Bernardino residents. “Come to the center, because there’s help here for everyone – for our bodies and our minds.”

Enjoy a free family-friendly luau at your local San Bernardino County Library By Manny Sandoval

During August, San Bernardino County Library hosts 10 luaus across the county, including its branches in Rialto, Highland, and Fontana. The all-ages event will include face painting, crafts, a limbo game, opportunity drawing, and of course, the opportunity to check out new books, which is always free.

“All programming at our libraries is always free. But, when everything is so expensive, we must put together family-friendly events like this. Community libraries are one of the last few things that are free,” said Library Events Coordinator Liz Smith.

Those who are interested do not need to RSVP for any of the forthcoming events, which are scheduled on August 9th (Fontana at 4 PM), August 10th (Highland at 4 PM), and August 20th (Rialto at 11 AM).

“Digital devices are great, as they provide some awesome learning tools, but grabbing a physical book is a great way to help children connect with literature. Small children who have access to books are more likely to start exploring and reading; when we get them at a young age, we can build their love of reading that can hopefully last a lifetime,” concluded Smith. All County of San Bernardino Libraries offer books, movies, audiobooks, and digital resources - all free of charge.

This Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) funding will increase the quality of water services for San Bernardino residents while bolstering reservoir infrastructure to reduce potential hazards.

“Extreme weather events are becoming more prevalent here in the Inland Empire and we must act now to ensure we are prepared,” said Rep. Pete Aguilar. “Ensuring our infrastructure is up-to-date and resilient in the face of floods, earthquakes, wildfires and other natural disasters will help keep residents safe.”

“The funding awarded under the Local Hazard Mitigation grant will increase

the reliability of essential water services for the San Bernardino community.” said Miguel Guerrero, General Manager for the San Bernardino Municipal Water Department.

“The four steel reservoir retrofits funded by this grant reduce potential hazards such as flooding or supply interruption resulting from tank damage or failure and are critical to support firefighting activities during a catastrophic event.”

FEMA’s Hazard Mitigation Grant Program provides funding to state, local, tribal and territorial governments to develop plans to reduce or mitigate the impact of disasters on their communities.

ll four city libraries of San Bernardino Public Library are now offering its library cardholders free vehicle day-use entry to over 200 participating state park units operated by State Parks. The California State Library Parks Pass is valid for entry of one passenger vehicle with a capacity of nine people or less, or one highway licensed motorcycle. Libraries include:

Rowe Branch, 108 E. Marshall

Villaseñor Branch, 525 N. Mt. Vernon Ave.

Feldheym has five passes and three branches have three passes each. Hours of operation are the same for all libraries: Monday & Tuesday: 12 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday & Thursday: 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday: Closed. Saturday: 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Passes are for a checkout period of three weeks with a City of San Bernardino permanent library card that is in good standing. Park passes may not be placed on hold, renewed, and need to be returned in-person during library operational hours. They are available only on a first-come, first-serve basis.

“Spending time in nature is crucial to our mental health and well-being,” said

First Partner Jennifer Siebel Newsom, in a statement. “We’re lucky to have the largest state park system in the nation, and I am thrilled to partner with California State Parks and the California State Library to help make those spaces more accessible to California families. With the California State Library Parks Pass, anyone with a library card will be able to unlock the benefits and beauty of our majestic state parks.”

“Parks and libraries have the potential to be powerful symbols and agents for California’s open spaces,” said California State Parks Director Armando Quintero, in a statement. “It is an honor to work side-by-side with the California State Library, Newsom Administration and partners to advance outdoor access to all Californians via public libraries, inspire stewardship for the state park system and build a healthier California.” “Libraries are trusted community

hubs where Californians know they can find what they need to work, play, and thrive,” said California State Librarian Greg Lucas in a statement. “This partnership with State Parks now allows Californians to ‘check out’ California’s great outdoors at their community library.”

We also offer various online resources for library cardholders through our library website at www.sbpl.org including Overdrive eBooks, eAudiobooks, and Brainfuse Live Homework Help with subject experts via chat from 1 to 10 p.m. daily except major holidays. Patrons who do not already have a library card can also sign up at our website for an online library card to use the digital resources. Information about library programs and activities is also available at our website. Information is available at 909-3818201.

Inland Empire Men's Mental Health Program adds instructor

“I'm very happy to have been promoted to being an instructor by the Inland Empire Men's Mental Health program," says Yamileth Monarrez, "because the courses address issues that I've personally experienced and now I feel I can do something to make things better."

The Making Hope Happen Foundation's Inland Empire Men's Mental program offers free classes that educate people on how to recognize signs of mental distress in people they know and love and teaches them how to get friends and family members to be willing to talk about what's going on.

Program manager Gerzon Ceseña says, "Men—es-

pecially minority men—tend to be very reluctant to talk about problems they're having.

Instead, they often shut themselves off, which can make things worse. Our program is all about getting rid of the idea that real men don't need help and instead, that real friends can help friends when things are tough."

“Promoting Ms. Monarrez to our training staff allows us to accommodate more students for our suicide prevention and mental health first aid classes,” says Ceseña.

Yamileth Monarrez is a senior at UC Riverside and will be graduating in December. She spent a semester abroad at London South Bank University, taking a variety of courses, and psychology is an area she has

been interested in for some time.

The exposure to a different culture broadened her horizons while at the same time, showed how people everywhere often need to deal with the same problems.

Monarrez says, "At UCR I've served as a mentor to freshmen. I really enjoy helping people and I wanted to work for IE Men's Mental Health because the program emphasizes the need to de-stigmatize mental health issues so that people can get the help they need."
