According to RUSD Superin tendent Dr Cuauhtémoc Avila, the District is committed to the career advancement of our men of color by assisting them to acquire their teaching cre dentials at CSUSB Recruiting men of color to become classroom teachers is a focus nationally and within the state of California Men of color in the teaching profession make up five percent of the 3 2 million teachers nationwide In California, men make up 27 percent of teachers and fewer than ten percent of teachers are men of color In the RUSD, 15 percent of teach ers are males of color Yet, Dr DomNwachukwu and Dr McIver Gibbs stated that statis tics show that the benefits to having male teachers of color in the classroom are tremen dous, with students earning higher test scores, lower dropout rates, and a higher per centage of students going to college “The impact of Project Im pact will be what these future teachers mean for our stu dents,” Dr McIver Gibbs said “You are going to be in the classroom, making a huge dif ference You will see the prod uct of your work through the lives that your students will live just because you made this decision to become a teacher ” In December 2021 the Dis trict offered financial support to current African American and Latino men in the District who were interested in becom ing teachers

ELKS have not forgotten about them So we thought it would be awe some to treat them to a relaxing day So we rented two 15 pas senger vans and drove everyone to the harbor, covered boarding expenses and all of the food,” said Jeremy Langley, Fontana Rialto Elks Lodge exalted ruler

For one veteran passenger, the trip marked the first time on a boat since finishing his term in the U S Navy, while it was the first time another veteran pas senger had ever been on a boat “The 13 men and one woman that joined us were very appre ciative As a fisherman myself, I’m proud that we were able to pull this off, and it’s a shared experience that all of us will re member forever,” concluded Langley

These leaders have al ready started working toward their teaching credential “Your partnership is the first of its kind,” Dr Dom Nwachukwu stated at the school board meeting “Our partnership has been with the (San Bernardino/Riverside) County of Superintendent Of fices but our goal is to get with districts so that they can iden tify their own men to train We can help you to grow your own model When you grow your own, over time, they will stay in the district, they are invested in the district, and they will continue to serve in the district ”

The trip was made possible by a grant received by the Elks Na tional Foundation, an entity dedicated to assisting Elks Lodges across the country in making a positive impact in their community “The veterans that joined us ranged in age from 25 to 70 Al though it was a slow fishing day, our boat still caught three fish, a dorado, yellowtail, and small bass,” continued Langley

RUSD , Edgar Sanchez, Joshua Shu ford, Omar Triana, and Jabari Watson

Meanwhile, Joshua Shuford, who is working to become a math teacher, said he “ran away” from being a teacher for years but now he's accepted the challenge and is ready to "be an envoy of educational lead ership and societal change ” He continued, “Thank you for this opportunity to make change happen I will do my best no matter what ”

Six of the eight Project Im pact teaching candidates were present at the school board meeting on August 24; the re maining two were attending class for the program Some candidates addressed the RUSD Board of Education, much to the appreciation of the audience

Jacobo Lopez, whose mother was a teacher, started a career in advertising But he started to look for something different He began working as a substi tute teacher in the RUSD in 2017 Lopez embraced the po sition of being a “role model” for his students as he works to fufill his goal of becoming an elementary school teacher “When I look into classrooms now, sometimes I see my younger self Only now I am in a position to step up and be the teacher and the role model that I needed when I was their age," Lopez replied “I am a man of color, and I believe it is impor tant for students to see that suc cess and academic achievement are possible; it's standing right here ”

Currently, the eight enrollees who answered the call have begun their classes at CSUSB and are working toward earn ing a teaching credential Once these Project Impact candi dates complete the program, they become full time teachers serving students in the RUSD

To sum things up, the Lakers are offering to both teams Russell Westbrook and the teams 2027 first round pick (and possibly a 2029 first round pick if they feel the trade makes them a contender)

By acquiring Patrick Beverley, the Lakers have opened a whole new can of worms for the league to see But, most importantly, they showed their cards and seemed to confirm that their ideal scenario on opening night is not to have Russell Westbrook on the roster

Their return for Russ could make or break their sea son, and we will have to see in this next month and a half if they can pull something off to make the roster a championship caliber one

Sometimes the NBA just feels like one wild re ality TV show, and it sure felt like it this past week when the Los Angeles Lakers announced they were trading for veteran defensive specialist Patrick Beverley in exchange for Talen Horton Tucker and Stanley Johnson who will be headed to Utah Now, at face value, this trade seems pretty sim plistic The Lakers get much needed defense at the PG spot as well as veteran leadership while also clearing Hor ton Tucker ’s contract from their books next offsea son However, if you’ve been around the NBA the past few years, you know there’s a bigger storyline to this That story line is current Lakers guard Russell Westbrook and his rivalry with Beverley So, let’s dig into what this trade means for West brook and his future, or maybe lack thereof, with the Lakers

However, after reports that the market for Kyrie Irv ing was officially closed, many fans thought West brook would still be a Laker come opening night That is until this trade happened Immediately, fans on Twitter made their jokes about Beverley and Westbrook being on the same team given their rivalry that sparked in 2013 when Bever ley, seemingly intentionally, took out Westbrook’s leg in the playoffs and ended his season It’s obvious that these two on the same team won’t work Surely, the Lakers understand that So, why trade for Beverley?

By Caden Henderson

The answer is simple, Westbrook is the odd man out A few hours after the trade was announced, new re ports started circulating that the Lakers are heavily looking to the Indiana Pacers and the Utah Jazz to be a trade partner for Westbrook

In exchange, the Lakers are looking for either sharp shooter Buddy Hield and rim protector Myles Turner from the Pacers, or Mike Conley and stretch four Bojan Bogdanovich from the Jazz

There is also the possibility that the Knicks get in volved if they can acquire Donovan Mitchell from the Jazz, in which case the Lakers could get another shooter such as Evan Fournier, but it seems we are a long way away from that Now, there is always the small chance that the orig inal Beverley trade is expanded and neither he nor Westbrook suits up for the Lakers this season, but there are no signs that point to that Beverley is a competitor and a fighter, traits the Lak ers heavily lacked last season Surely they would not give up two solid young pieces just to ship him off But, you never know in the NBA

It is no secret that the Lakers have been shopping Westbrook to virtually the entire league all summer long His ginormous contract simply does not match his production and he is not a good fit alongside the Lakers dynamic duo of LeBron James and Anthony Davis
