On
September 15th, San Bernardino County Superior Court Judge John M Pacheco proudly greeted commu nity leaders and students as they walked into the iconic Mitla Cafe Banquet Room for a live reenactment of the historic Lopez V Sec combe case
The case desegregated city parks and recre ational facilities in San Bernardino in 1944, after three Hispanic boys between the ages of 13 16 years old were denied entrance into the Perris Hill Plunge due to being “Hispanic,” a time in which 85 percent of schools were seg regated, according to Pacheco
Days before the reenactment, Pacheco sat down with San Bernardino’s KVCR and In land Empire Community News
He opened up about discrimination he faced outside of his West Side San Bernardino com munity as he was pursuing an education in law at Azusa Pacific University and Western State University
“I grew up in an impoverished community My family, friends, and neighbors were all poor, and it didn’t matter what color you were When I got to college, I started to sense that I was treated differently My first experience was when I was in the cafeteria, and I sat down at a table, a person came up to me and said, ‘the Mexican table is over there that is where you’re supposed to sit,’” said Pacheco
He also shared his experience with a profes
“I took an English class, and I received a bad grade So I asked the professor if I could re take his class, and he asked, ‘why ’ I told him that I wanted to become a lawyer He literally started laughing at me, shaking his head,” Pacheco said
“He said, ‘You’re not serious, are you? I said, ‘Yes, I’m very serious I asked, ‘What do you suggest I do? He said, ‘Well, you’re hav ing a summer break I suggest you get a job pulling weeds at the courthouse, and every morning when the lawyers come in, you set yourself close to them at the entrance so you can hear how they speak that might help you become a lawyer,” continued Pacheco
Today, Pacheco has not only had a successful career as an attorney, but in 2001, he was ap pointed by Governor Gray Davishe as a judge of the Superior Court of San Bernardino County; and won reelection outright in the primary on June 7th, 2022
Pacheco says 2022 was the perfect time to reintroduce the community to Lopez V Sec combe, with all of the political division and a great way to kick off National Hispanic Her itage Month which runs from September 15th October 15th
“My students learn not only about their culture, they learn about their classmates' cultural heritage as well,” Fuentes said “Cultural heritage is deeply per sonal, but it is also a connection we all share; through connecting with your culture you connect more with those around you and we learn that we have a lot in common with each other ”
Fuentes first started the class room project in 2014 While it was on hold during the pandemic due to COVID 19 restrictions, students welcomed its return
“I really liked learning about each other's cultures,” Isaias Rivera, a third grade student, stated, joyfully
“My favorite part was sharing my culture with students and parents ” Jazmine Siddiqui, a third grade student, said

“Each year Mrs Fuentes has her students work collabora tively with their families to ex plore and celebrate everything that is uniquely them,” Rad cliffe Perez said “In doing this project, the students not only learn more about their own fam ilies and culture, but they also begin to embrace the commonal ities they discover among their friends Mrs Fuentes’ room comes alive with the sights, sounds, and sometimes smells, of the student's diverse cultural backgrounds and experiences It is a celebration that we all share The student's smiles and enthu siasm last for days after ”
R h M sOnMonday, October 10, 2022, at 9:44 a m , the Rialto Po lice Department Communica tions Center received multiple reports of a traffic collision involving a vehicle driving through the front doors of Stater Bros located at 168 E Baseline Rd in the City of Rialto
Officers arrived on scene at 9:46 a.m. to find several in jured subjects inside the store, including Deloris Jones, who was the the driver and sole occupant of a black Toyota Tundra
Initial reports were that sub jects were trapped under the vehicle, however, upon offi cers’ arrival a single female who had been pushed to the ground by the front of the ve hicle had already been as sisted by witnesses and pulled clear from the vehicle
A total of eight subjects, in
cluding Jones, were trans ported to local hospitals for a variety of injuries
One male subject suffered a broken leg and the female who was pushed to the ground had several lacera tions, while others had com plaints of pain
At this time none of the in juries appear to be life threat ening
Based on the initial investi gation it appears Jones was attempting to park her vehi cle in a handicap stall in front of the business when she became distracted
Jones failed to put the vehi cle in park and as she re moved her foot from the brake, she inadvertently pressed the accelerator in stead With Jones still in side, the vehicle proceeded
through the front door of the business and collided with multiple cash registers, in juring people in the immedi ate area
Rialto Police Department Traffic Investigators re sponded and the investiga tion is still ongoing however, intoxication does not appear to be a factor at this time
Anyone who may have in formation about this incident can contact Traffic Sergeant Dan Smith at (909) 644 6025
Witnesses can also anony mously report information through WeTip at (800) 782 7463, reference case #932212147

2 Braves vs 6 Phillies
By Caden HendersonThis past weekend the MLB play offs began with the new wild card best of three round where the Phillies, Padres, Guardians, and Mariners all punched their tickets to the divisional rounds Now, we enter October baseball, where anything can happen Here are my predictions for the entire playoffs and what to look out for in each series
NLDS (Best Of 5):
1 Dodgers vs 5 Padres
Prediction: Dodgers in 4
All the trash talk and storylines from both sides of this NL West rivalry will come together when the 1 seeded Dodgers face the 5 seeded Padres, who are coming off their Wild Card round win vs the Mets The Padres are without superstar SS Fer nando Tatis Jr due to suspension, but that doesn’t mean they still don’t have a chance against the Dodgers Trade deadline acqui sition Juan Soto showed up big in the Wild Card round win and the Padres starting pitching staff and bullpen have seem to hit their stride at the right time But, when I look at the Dodgers, I can’t bet against them this early Mookie Betts had an MVP caliber season and Freddie Freeman and Trae Turner were #1 and #2 in hits this season in all of baseball
Combine the Dodgers insanely high powered offense with a pitching staff led by Clayton Kershaw and the severely un derrated yet elite Julio Urias, and you’ve got yourself a recipe for a Dodgers series win in 4 games
Prediction: Braves in 5
After a decade of no playoff appearances the Phillies are back and are looking to upset the defending champions and 2 seed, the Atlanta Braves Despite losing their longtime leader Freddie Freeman to the Dodgers in free agency, the Braves have stayed strong
The offense is headlined by one of the best hitting catchers in all of baseball William Contreras along with former top pick SS Dansby Swanson as well as young superstar Ronald Acuna Jr The Braves have a lot of experience given the teams title run last season, but the Phillies have the talent to make this a series Philadel phia has their own elite hitting Catcher in JT Realmuto helping spark their offense along with 46 HR hitter Kyle Schwarber, 1B slugger Rhys Hoskins, and superstar RF/DH Bryce Harper who dealt with in juries all season long but is good to go for this playoff run In the end, I expect this series to produce a lot of offense aside from when the aces pitch, and I think ex perience will win out in a win or go home game 5 as the Braves will advance to the NLCS
ALDS (Best of 5)
1 Astros vs 5 Mariners
Prediction: Astros in 3 I’m going to keep this one short and sweet: the Mariners aren’t ready to com pete with the Astros The Astros are simply too good and too experienced to be chal lenged by the Mariners in a playoff setting Mariners young star CF Julio Rodriguez is
an absolute stud and will most likely be the best player in baseball in the near fu ture, but not right now The Astros will easily sweep the Mariners and continue to try to complete their redemption arc after the cheating scandal a few years back
2 Yankee vs 3 Guardians Prediction: Yankees in 4
If the Rays had beaten the Guardians in the Wild Card I would’ve had them upset ting the Yankees, but that didn’t happen, and the Jose Ramirez led Guardians are here to try to end a historic Yankees sea son We all know about the Aaron Judge HR record, so I’m not going to go on and on about him, especially when the core around him deserves as much praise
1B Anthony Rizzo is a former World Se ries champion with the Cubs and has been here before On the mound, SP’s Nester Cortes and Gerrit Cole should be a lock to give the Yankees 2 wins, as I see them de feating the simply less talented Guardians in 4 games
NLCS (Best of 7):
1 Dodgers vs 2 Braves
Prediction: Braves in 7
The trilogy of the Dodgers Braves NLCS journey will be upon us, and I see it giving us all we want and more as the aforemen tioned Freedie Freeman will face his for mer team with a ticket to the World Series on the line In the end, I see the Braves once again defeating the Dodgers, this time in a deciding game 7, where Ronald Acuna Jr will show why he’s one of the
best in the game
As for the Dodgers, they’ll barely fall short once again, and continue to struggle to complete a championship run in a full 162 game season
ALCS (Best of 7):
1 Astros vs 2 Yankees
Prediction: Astros in 6
The Yankees will want their revenge against the Astros in this matchup, but I don’t see them getting it, the ‘Stros have shown no indication that they aren’t a World Series caliber team, and I don’t see that stopping now They’ll limit the Yan kees offense enough to maintain home field advantage throughout the series and win in 6 games
World Series (Best of 7):
Astros vs Braves Prediction: Astros in 6
A World Series rematch is something that rarely happens, but I think it’s coming The Astros will avenge last seasons loss to the Braves and complete one of the weirdest journeys back to glory sports has ever seen
As for World Series MVP, I see Yordan Alvarez capping off a ridiculously good season and hitting enough HR’s in the Fall Classic to earn himself the honor
There are my 2022 MLB playoff predic tions

CAL FIRE urges all residents to incorporate this year ’s Fire Pre vention Week theme because homes can burn fast In some in stances, you may have as little as two minutes or less to safely es cape a home fire once the smoke alarm sounds After all, you plan for vacations, holidays, and weekly meals, why not plan to save your life and those around you in the event of a home fire?

“According to a newly released NFPA report, U S home fire deaths hit a 14 year high last year, marking the critical importance of Fire Prevention Week and the re minder to plan and practice a home fire escape so that action can be
There are two key factors critical to safely escaping a home fire: early warning from smoke alarms and advance planning
Accordingly, this year ’s Fire Pre vention Week concept offers a blueprint to guide you and yours safely and swiftly out of a home fire Invest a little time now so that you and yours are ready for the fire that won’t wait Some action items you can take to equip your home and plan your escape are:
• Make the first Saturday of each month “Smoke Alarm Saturday” a working smoke alarm will clue you in that there is a fire, and you need to escape
• Strategically install smoke alarms in every sleeping room, outside each sleeping area, every level of the home and the base ment
• Test the alarms regularly by pressing the test button and change the battery if there’s no sound or the sound is low If your smoke alarm chirps, change the battery immediately
• Develop a home fire escape plan and rehearse it with all family members at least twice a year!
• Map the escape route including windows and doors make sure the route is free of obstacles
Predetermine an outside meet ing place that’s a safe distance in front of your home
• Everyone should know the
fire department’s emergency number and how to call when they’re safely outside
