The San Bernardino County Department of Public Health and the Community Vital Signs Initiative is asking county residents to provide feedback aimed at improving community health by taking part in the 2022 Community Health Survey

The community health survey is anonymous for adults 18 years and older living in San Bernardino County The survey is part of an ongoing community health assessment to prioritize health related needs among county residents, set a community led action plan to address those needs, and improve the com munity’s overall health

Beginning today through December 12, county res idents can complete the survey at https://bit ly/CVS Survey The community is encouraged to complete the survey, which focuses on topics to understand what is most important to their health and commu nity, how their quality of life is perceived, and their experience with the effects of health inequities

"We want to hear from county residents to learn about the issues affecting their health and their com munity,” said County Health Officer Dr Michael Se

queira “Completing the survey will provide data to accurately understand patterns in health inequities and strategies to improve them Our collective goal is to support all efforts that help residents live a long healthy life ”

Community organizations and stakeholders are highly encouraged to distribute the survey to their clients and others in the community “We hope that we hear from a broad range of voices, especially res idents who are often underserved, underrepresented, have poorer health, and were disproportionally af fected by the COVID 19 pandemic,” said Diana Fox, co chair of the Community Vital Signs Steering Committee

Once the survey is closed and the data is analyzed, results will be shared with the community to discuss which health issues should be prioritized and to iden tify what strategies will be most effective in address ing them The process will inform the update of the San Bernardino County Community Health Assess ment and Community Transformation Plan

For more information about this process or to obtain paper copies of the survey, contact Dori Baeza with the Department of Public Health and Community Vital Signs Initiative at dbaeza@dph sbcounty gov or (909) 486 9537

Vision To Lear n launches fr ee glasses pr og ram in San Ber nardino County

Cheerful students were ex cited to receive free pre scription glasses in front of community leaders and educa tors at Rialto’s Charlotte N Werner Elementary School on Fri day, Nov 18 The students were the first in San Bernardino County to be provided free vision services by Vision To Learn, a nonprofit or ganization with a mission to help kids in underserved communities get the glasses they need to see clearly at school

Following last year ’s debut in Riverside County, Vision To Learn plans to provide more than 75,000 free eye exams to students in neighboring San Bernardino County over the coming years

“Vision To Learn is so excited to finally be launching in San Bernardino County,” said Vision To Learn President Ann Hollister “The success of the program in Riverside County has made it easy to bring our services to the stu dents of San Bernardino County ”

One in five public school stu dents in the U S lack the glasses they need to see the board, read a book or participate in class; and in low income communities, 95% of kids who need glasses do not have them Students with uncorrected vision problems often avoid read ing, suffer headaches and can have trouble focusing in class, as 80% of learning during a child’s first 12 years is visual Additionally stu dents not proficient in reading by the third grade are more likely to drop out of school

A three year controlled study of the VTL program with Warby Parker (published in Journal of the American Medical Association

Ophthalmology 9/9/21) by re searchers at Johns Hopkins Uni versity Wilmer Eye Institute found that students provided glasses gained the equivalent of an addi tional two to three months of learning compared to their peers who failed a vision screening but did not get glasses Students in the lowest performing 25%, as well as those with IEPs and enrolled in Special Education courses, gained the equivalent of four to six months of additional learning, which was a higher impact than all other common educational inter ventions studied

“I am always looking for ways to bring new technology and services to our residents,” said San Bernardino County Board of Su pervisors Chairman Curt Hagman “Vision To Learn’s mobile clinics are incredible resources and ex actly what all schools need ”

The program has helped kids in over 500 underserved communi ties in 14 states and the District of Columbia Vision To Learn serves the needs of the hardest to reach children; about 90% of kids served by Vision To Learn live in poverty and about 85% are kids of color This year another 100,000 chil dren will receive glasses from Vi sion To Learn despite the challenge COVID 19 continues to present at schools Expansion of their Southern California program is possible thanks to the support of several generous funders, includ ing The Studio @Blue Meridian and an anonymous donor

Anal yzing and pr edicting ever y Power 5 Confer ence Championship game

This weekend is championship weekend And, for multiple power 5 teams fighting for their conferences title, this means high stakes action with spots in the college football playoff on the line I’m here to analyze each game, see what bowl game or playoff implications they may have, and give my predictions on these critical games

ACC: Clemson Vs North Carolina

The ACC has had a down year to say the very least, and neither teams in this matchup have any real shot at a playoff spot if they win However, bowl game im plications are at stake A win for Clemson would se cure a New Year ’s 6 bowl birth and possibly create a highly anticipated matchup with another big time team like Alabama

As for North Carolina, a NY6 is unlikely, but a win could push them into a bigger game, ideally the Hol iday Bowl where they’d have a chance to face one of the five ranked Pac 12 teams As for the champi onship game itself, I think Clemson is much more tal ented and dominant than any ACC school, and North Carolina is different I have them winning 35 14

Big Ten: Michigan vs Purdue

The Big Ten continues to shoot itself in the foot with their divisional system and somehow a 4 loss Purdue team is in the championship game with the 11 0, dom inant Wolverines, despite two teams in the other divi sion having a better conference record than the Boilermakers

Either way, here we are The scenario for Michigan is simple; win and you’re in the college football play off, most likely as the #2 seed

If they lose, things get more complicated, but they would maybe still have a chance As for Purdue, a win

from them could net them a bowl game vs an SEC school such as LSU, depending on how the rest things pan out this weekend

However, I don’t believe Purdue will get that win Michigan will win behind a monster night from the running game 48 7 to punch their ticket to the college football playoff

Big 12: Kansas State vs TCU

This championship game is shaping up to be a great one TCU comes in undefeated and just one win away from a college football playoff birth However, make no mistake, Kansas State can beat them and will show up ready to win

The Horned Frogs all season have had fans just wait ing for them to finally lose a close one, and it will hap pen here Fighting for a key NY6 bowl birth, Kansas State will use 1,200 yard rusher RB Deuce Vaughn to power through TCU and pull off the upset, 27 24 TCU, meanwhile, will lose their playoff spot, and have to settle for a NY6 bowl game This upset will flip the playoffs on its head

Pac 12: USC vs Utah

USC is in the same boat as Michigan and TCU; win and you’re in the playoffs Losses from both Ohio State and LSU last weekend set USC up in a perfect spot to make their first playoff appearance in the CFP era However, their opponent is their only loss this season, Utah

Utah beat the Trojans on a last second two point con version, and are probably the only reason USC hasn’t already clinched a playoff spot

Utah does have a lot to play for, as a title win would secure their spot in the granddaddy of them all, the Rose Bowl The question is; what defense will get enough stops?

The Trojans offense continues to breeze through everybody and secures a playoff spot for USC in an other high scoring 45 35 win

SEC: Georgia vs LSU

After a stunning loss to a 5 win Texas A&M team, LSU’s playoff hopes have vanished in an instant But they now have a chance to play spoiler and earn a big time bowl game birth with a win vs Georgia

The undefeated Bulldogs are one win away from an undefeated regular season and #1 overall seed in the playoffs

And, after seeing LSU’s performance last week, I see no scenario where the Tigers can win, even with the pressure of a possible playoff birth off their shoul ders

Georgia will dominate and stop LSU QB Jayden Daniels from scrambling and creating plays outside of the pocket The offense will dominate a shaky Tiger defense, and UGA will secure their playoff birth in a 31 to 14 victory

There it is, the title games for the power 5 confer ences Should chaos ensue in any of the games minus the ACC championship, the college football playoff bracket could be heavily altered, and teams on the outside looking in without a game this weekend could benefit

Power 5 Championship weekend starts Friday, De cember 2nd, as USC looks to punch their ticket first and get revenge at 8 EST in Vegas vs Utah

Page A4 • December 01, 2022 • Inland Empire Community Newspapers
Both offenses are among the best in all of college football, as we saw in their first meeting The answer to that question I believe, is USC
