Keep your electricity flowing & business growing
Uninterrupted power supply is the goal of every power transmission and distribution company, but many problems lie in the path of achieving it. These problems can lead to unnecessary shutdowns, and can cause huge monetary and man-hour losses. To help power companies achieve highest efficiency, FLIR brings a wide range of thermal imaging cameras and T&M products.
FLIR’s wide range of products for predictive and preventive maintenance
Substation Thermal Image
These products help in detecting hot spots from a safe distance, avoiding unwanted shutdowns, identifying hazardous SF6 gas leakage, monitoring high voltage electrical substations continuously from remote location, etc.

From the President’s Desk
Dear Friends, One more month of activities and events has been behind us. Since last communication, we have had an “Electrical Safety at Workplaceâ€? at CBIP Delhi; an IEEMA delegation to Thailand to promote E3 and distribuELEC; meeting with &KDLUSHUVRQ &($ DQG RWKHU RIĂ€FLDOV RI &($ E\ 0U 'HHSDN 3DWQL &KDLUPDQ ,((0$ &DSDFLWRU 'LYLVLRQ PHHWLQJ ZLWK ''* FHUWLĂ€FDWLRQ %,6 E\ 0U 3DWQL DORQJZLWK Secretariat; Promotion of International Conference on Capacitors with Director General, TERI by Mr Patni, Sceretariat and also with Chairperson CERC. It is great to see the Chairman of a Division on such a hyperactive mode trying to promote actively an IEEMA event. Vivek Arora from IEEMA Secretariat attended IEC young professional workshop at Busan, Korea. Friends, we are just about a fortnight away from E3 exhibition to be held at Kolkata from 14-16 December, 2018. You must be receiving regular mailers from IEEMA for participation as visitor and exhibitor. We have relentlessly pursued 0R3 0R& ',33 DQG 5(& IRU WKHLU DFWLYH LQYROYHPHQW :H KDYH FRQĂ€UPDWLRQV from JS- Power, JS -Commerce and JS -DIPP for visit and chairing sessions in the conference. We have made headway in promoting the event with CREDAI, Consultants in Steel and Mining Sectors and EPC Contractors with Railways. Mr. Chugh, Mr. Nanda and Mr. Misra presented IEEMA’s point of view at CII-DHI Capital Goods Summit on 16th November 2018. We had recent visit to Bangladesh to promote E3. IEEMA team led by ER Vice Chairman, Mr. Siddharth Bhutoria visited Nepal to promote E3 and DistribuELEC. Friends, Power sector is undergoing challenging times in India. With accumulation of NPAs particularly for generation companies, shortage of coal, poor PLF, enforced backing down of power plants to accommodate intermittent renewables, PPAs getting fewer and farther between, a negative perception about the sector LV VORZO\ JHWWLQJ EXLOW DPRQJ WKH Ă€QDQFLDO FRPPXQLW\ ,((0$ LV DFWLYHO\ HQJDJLQJ with Banks on this issue and so far we have been receiving favourable response. I had the privilege of visiting Tokyo to attend AGM of Federation of Asian Electrical Manufacturers Association. IEEMA presented India’s scenario and plans ahead. India’s leadership role alongwith France in international solar alliance was stressed. India’s size of electrical market and future potential was presented. India’s march WRZDUGV GHFDUERQLVDWLRQ GLJLWL]DWLRQ GLVWULEXWHG JHQHUDWLRQ DQG GLYHUVLĂ€FDWLRQ was explained. India’s ambitions renewable target was impressive. The point very well taken was India’s progress in DIGITISED, COMPACT, UNMANNED SUB-STATIONS. Extensive use of power electronics particularly syno-phase measurement in transmission lines, not line maintenance, combining HVDC and UHVDC to form one nation - one mega grid with cross-border connections were explained. How India achieved a market designer’s dream of one price for nation wise determined by extensive buyer-seller participation through power trading mechanism where scheduling, despatch and settlement takes place HYHU\ Ă€IWHHQ PLQXWHV 7UDQVPLVVLRQ WKXV EHFRPLQJ DQ HQDEOHU E\ VXEVWLWXWLQJ LQHIĂ€FLHQW JHQHUDWLRQ DQG UHQHZDEOH LQWHJUDWLRQ JHRJUDSKLFDO VSUHDG RI WKH JULG would help in balancing the intermittency of renewable. I have been receiving response from members on issues needing attention by IEEMA. I am trying my best to respond to each of them. I hope that I continue to receive the same as deeper engagement between association and members only can make each other mere relevant to each other.

Samvaad...
Dear Members, The Month of December and February will witness two back to back exhibition by IEEMA, one in the Eastern region of Country namely E3 and the other in Western region i.e. DistribuELEC and buildELEC. The two exhibitions will showcase the preparedness of electrical equipment industry and how the industry is gearing up to meet the rapidly rising domestic demand and also establish its presence as an important player in the global electrical equipment arena. I am happy to see that our industry is strenuously making effort on converting this opportunity into reality. Talking about E3 which is scheduled from December 14-16, 2018 is aimed to UHGHÀQH EHQFKPDUN IRU WHFKQLFDO DIÁXHQFH DV :HVW %HQJDO DFWV DV D FDWDO\VW IRU economic and business opportunities between India, ASEAN and other Asian countries. E3 is the largest energy convention which aims to bring sustainability to the electrical ecosystem. From February 4-6, 2019, we are organising distribuELEC exhibition which will cover not only advance electricity distribution technologies but also conventional electrical equipments. We are also organising conference – Intelect – on Intelligent electricity where manufacturers, system solution providers etc. can share their experiences of deployment of advanced technologies in the power sector. Exhibitors are also showcasing prepayment meters, smart meters, distribution automation equipments etc. These equipment play very important role in loss reduction and reliability improvement. We are getting very good response from industry to newly introduced BuildELEC. Huge investments are being made in building sector and advanced building management systems are being deployed in many residential / commercial buildings in India. Electrical safety in buildings is also very important. We will be showcasing products covering electrical safety, building management systems etc. in BuildELEC. We invite you to visit both the exhibition to witness the next gen technologies displayed by our members. See you there!

Guest article Control of Wind-Induced Instabilities associated with Conductors through application of Dampers
The interruption of electricity due to failure of transmission lines can trigger social and economic calamities. Suspended conductors of overhead power lines are lightweight and lightly damped structural elements, which are very prone to vortex-induced vibrations under the action of light or moderately strong winds.
Various case studies indicate that industries can save anywhere upto 20% on their electricity bills just by reducing harmonics in their electrical network and improving the power factor.
76 Switchgear includes all the switching devices associated with power system protection. It also includes all devices associated with control, metering and regulating of electrical power systems. Assembly of such devices in a logical manner forms switchgear. In other words systems used for switching, controlling and protecting the electrical power circuits and different types of electrical equipment are known as switchgear.
