Dear Friends, I thank you for the warm feedback to my message in the previous edition of IEEMA journal. I believe the positive messages – of us overcoming this unprecedented crisis, of the policy reforms announced by the Govt., and of the silver-linings hidden behind the economic clouds – together struck a chord amongst us. I have more good news to report in this month’s edition! As we were welcoming the proposed changes in the Electricity Act and other UHIRUPV WKH 0LQLVWU\ RI 3RZHU QRWLĂ€HG DQ RUGHU RQ -XO\ VSHFLI\LQJ WKDW all imports from countries of “Prior referenceâ€? would need prior permission from WKH *RYW ² DQG ZKHUH DSSURYHG ZRXOG DGGLWLRQDOO\ QHHG WR EH WHVWHG DW QRWLĂ€HG ODERUDWRULHV LQ ,QGLD $V , ZULWH ZH DOVR VHH D GHFLVLYH RUGHU GDWHG UG -XO\ IURP Ministry of Finance, amending General Financial rules on public procurement. This imposes restrictions on procurement including prior registration of bidders IURP VSHFLĂ€HG FRXQWULHV RQ JURXQGV RI GHIHQVH RI ,QGLD QDWLRQDO VHFXULW\ 7KLV LV a moment of deep introspection for us. It may be recalled that our dependence on this neighbour for imports of Electricals and Electronics had been substantially increasing, and we at IEEMA had been continuously taking this XS ZLWK WKH *RYW WR SURWHFW GRPHVWLF LQGXVWU\ DJDLQVW ÂśDUWLĂ€FLDOO\ FKHDS¡ LPSRUWV IURP RXU QHLJKERXULQJ HFRQRPLF SRZHU :KLOH ZH GR VHH WKHVH QRWLĂ€FDWLRQV DV YLQGLFDWLRQ RI RXU HIIRUWV RQ WKH RWKHU KDQG ZH DOVR IRUHVHH WKH QHHG IRU RXU LQGXVWU\ WR RYHUFRPH WKH VKRUW WHUP LPSDFWV RQ WKHLU VXSSO\ FKDLQ DQG PD\ EH SURĂ€WDELOLW\ WR VRPH extent. By and large, our customers are supportive of the new policy, and it is up to us to take advantage of this situation and secure our long-term future. :H DUH DW DQ LQĂ HFWLRQ SRLQW RQH WKDW KDSSHQV UDUHO\ EXW ZKHQ LW GRHV WUDQVIRUPV WKH LQGXVWU\ WR D KLJKHU UHDOP RI JURZWK RSSRUWXQLW\ 7KH FODULRQ FDOO JLYHQ E\ WKH +RQ 30 IRU DQ ´$DWPDQLUEKDU RU VHOI VXIĂ€FLHQWÂľ ,QGLD LV LQ many ways reminiscent of Mahatma Gandhi’s “Swadeshiâ€? call which transformed the independence movement in India by focusing on the economics of trade in textiles. True and lasting change will come only when we increase our investment in R&D and build valuable IPRs and bring differentiation to our engineered products. Two shining examples come to mind – the motorcycle industry, where India is the largest manufacturer and exporter in the world and ISRO, where our scientists overcame a technology embargo and developed our own indigenous R&D, which is now considered among the best in the world! It shows what we can achieve if we put our mind, resources and ambition together in a strategic direction. I am positive that we will all take the same lessons as we become self-reliant and invest in developing our indigenous technologies in the coming months and years. . I am also encouraged by the efforts taken by Niti Aayog to rethink and improve the current system of evaluating public Tenders on L1 basis; to a more balanced evaluation that gives equal weightage to the technology as well. I believe if this is embraced by the Govt., then we will get into a “Virtuousâ€? cycle of investment in R&D followed by rapid economic growth. 7KH PRQWK RI -XO\ DOVR VDZ WKH HOHFWLRQV IRU WKH 1DWLRQDO ([HFXWLYH &RXQFLO DW ,((0$ KHOG WKURXJK H YRWLQJ IRU WKH Ă€UVW WLPH LQ D WUDQVSDUHQW DQG WLPHO\ PDQQHU 7KH RYHUDOO SURFHVV ZDV VXFFHVVIXOO\ KHOG ZLWKRXW DQ\ JOLWFK REVWDFOHV :H KDG LQWHQVH SDUWLFLSDWLRQ WKLV WLPH DQG , FRQJUDWXODWH WKH ZLQQHUV WR 1(& , VHH PDQ\ QHZ IDFHV LQ contestants and thank them for their enthusiasm and passion and wish them all the very best towards taking up OHDGHUVKLS SRVLWLRQV LQ IXWXUH , DP DOVR SOHDVHG WR VKDUH ZLWK \RX WKDW RXU IXWXUH HYHQWV OLNH $QQXDO &RQYHQWLRQ $*0 ZRXOG EH KHOG RQ GLJLWDO SODWIRUP WKLV \HDU DQG ZH DUH FRQĂ€GHQW RI D PDVVLYH SDUWLFLSDWLRQ I am convinced that the way we have handled this unprecedented pandemic, and how we are going to use the current events, policies and developments to reform and transform ourselves at this crucial point for our industry, will be the proud legacy we can leave to the next generations. Participation of companies from countries sharing land border with India will require security clearance from the Ministries of External and Home Affairs. This of course will require resources, enterprise and collective will of industry and State. I am happy to inform you that Ministry of Power and other arms of the Government are actively pursuing this subject along with IEEMA.
