From the President’s Desk

Dear Friends, The month just passed was an eventful month for IEEMA, our first technical Conference E-Trafotech was a big success. The e-Conference witnessed registrations of over 1000+ with the participation of 1500+ delegates combined in all 3 days. The participants were across all section of stakeholders from Utilities, PSUs, Electricity Regulators, Testing and Research Institutes, Consultants, Utility service providers, Manufacturers of Transformers and Policymakers, Academia and Students. A virtual meeting of all leading association was chaired by Hon’ble Commerce and Industry Minister Shri Piyush Goyal to discuss policy initiatives to boost demand & getting the economy back on the growth path. IEEMA also suggested effective implementation of recently amendments announced as well on bank guarantees & payments . He advised to also focus on quality & productivity to achieve Aatm Nirbhar Bharat mission of Government. After the challenging year of 2020, it is very relevant now to focus on elevate 2021 and it is all about dealing with transformation and uncertainty. There is a need to develop connectivity in a more vibrant way amongst the membership and with all stakeholders. IEEMA has been recommending Aatmanirbhar Bharat for long and now Hon’ble Prime Minister has coined this phrase as a headline of the new initiatives by government for a self -reliant India. It is a great opportunity for the Indian industry to ride on this initiative for sustainable growth. Privatization, freedom and competitive market are key focus areas in 2021. With the active support of the membership, the key goal is to make IEEMA amongst the 3 top association by maintaining a sustained communication, sharing strategic road map and regular updates. The Five pillars which will make IEEMA position strong in the global scenario are localized

manufacturing, Digitalization and Innovation, Global penetration, IEEMA Capability and Government partnership. IEEMA has the highest technical knowhow within the membership and we must become one-stop-shop solution about all in electrical and electronics to go on to become the global encyclopedia for these sectors. We are working on a new website with contemporary technology and information is under development which will connect all stakeholders globally with ease of access to information. Technology Innovation and R&D will be the key drivers for success, especially for SMEs. I wish you a Happy New year and safe year ahead! Best Wishes,

Anil Saboo

Samvaad...

Dear Members, A sizeable portion of IEEMA membership is dependant largely on State and Central Utilities for business. The public procurement process has its unique environment which is based on L1 and now also increasingly by electronic reverse auction. Many of these State Utilities with whom our members do business are not in good financial health. In this situation, the supplier of goods and services is pressed with unrealistically low rates coupled with inordinately delayed payments, which means an added cost of interest and risk of default at bank followed by the sword of NPA account. This situation of low margin, high cost of interest, late payments, present a very fragile situation which is unique to our sector of electrical equipment business with State Utilities. Covid 19 and the ensuing lockdown has further complicated the environment in which many of IEEMA members operate. Liquidity has been the biggest concern and while the government has provided some relief in the form of emergency lending but still the situation continues to be precarious for many, to say the least. IEEMA has been making representations to the government, both Central and State, seeking appointments with bureaucrats and ministries to appraise them with the issue of inordinately delayed payment with little and sporadic success. In most cases, the solution and relief, other than assurances are missing because the bureaucrat and minister are themselves short of a solution,

due to the financial situation of utility. This problem has been there for the last many decades and the reason are well known; electricity theft and inventory management to mention the top two reasons. These can be addressed if there is a will both political and administrative. Could the solution lie somewhere else in some other organ of the Democratic apparatus, which has the powers to direct without conflict of interest and bias. What can IEEMA do more? I am seeking solutions from you. This unending situation which puts our members at risk and peril of becoming sick and consequently succumb. Are representations and meetings the only tool or something more unusual is required to be done to address this unusual situation. I want to leave this thought to you and await your recommendations.
