From the President’s Desk
Dear Friends, 2Q 0DUFK WK ,QGLD EHJDQ DQ XQSUHFHGHQWHG ORFNGRZQ WR Ă€JKW WKH spread of COVID-19. In these troubling times of ‘social distancing’ and ‘working from home’, the centrality of electricity in powering our current and future societies is more evident than ever before. However, the power sector also is not immune to the adverse effects of the pandemic. Sensing the trouble that the Industry is facing, IEEMA has been working round the clock to ensure that problems of our industry are raised at all possible platforms with the Government of India. We have been actively engaging with Ministry of Commerce & Industry, Power, Railways, Home & of course Finance to share with them our concerns & issues. Good news is that Government is pretty responsive & many of the issues are getting resolved practically on day to day basis. We have also had our members meetings with series of Utilities at top level of CMDs & Directors e.g. TS TRANSCO, HVPNL, UPPTCL, PSTCL, PSPCL, JVVNL, OPTCL & GRIDCO, MSETCL, DVVNL, TSECL, HPPTCL, HPSEB, MPPVVCL etc. Infact, in some of the states, we had these meetings also at Chief Secretary level. The high point of interactions over video conference in April was the meeting with Shri Sanjiv Nandan Sahai, Secretary, Power, Government of India. The Secretary gave a patient and sympathetic hearing to all the issues and asked for a detailed discussion in smaller groups on each subject in the coming weeks. More such meetings are under process with the idea to offer a direct dialogue between our members and its stakeholders. I appreciate initiative of our Regional Committees & Divisions, of course ably supported by secretariat, The concerns being discussed with the Stakeholders are Survival and liquidity for the industry, Bank Guarantee related issues, Waiver of Liquidated damages, Invocation of Force Majeure Clause due to COVID-19, Inspection of material on video mode, TReds platform a digital platform for MSMEs etc. Energy is a critical enabler of prosperity and economic growth, and the stability of global energy markets is essential to sustain and nurture modern industry and society. Drastic fall in crude oil prices is posing new challenges at Global level. While India on one hand stands to gain from lower imports bill, other side presents a gloomy picture in terms of much lower industrial demand in oil producing countries, thereby affecting exports. Finally, we are happy about the draft amendment to Electricity bill proposed by MOP. There are path breaking recommendations largely covering the points raised by us at various forums in last few quarters, in particular. We sincerely hope & wish that a consensus is formed at states level & the new act comes into play sooner than later. This in fact is the most opportune time to come out with massive reforms, particularly on power distribution side to make the sector sustainable & create fresh demand for Electrical equipment industry. This would improve our capacity utilisation which has been going down even before the pandemic. I call upon our members to stay charged, at the same time vigil on day to day developments & continue adapting all necessary steps to maintain adequate social distancing, hygiene & health for ourselves & our people. Let us Ă€JKW LW RXW WRJHWKHU , DP VXUH DV D WHDP ZH ZLOO ZLQ With best Wishes to you & families for good health & well-being,
