2020 SIR PETER USTINOV TELEVISION SCRIPTWRITING AWARD WINNER: HANNAH WESTALL, MIND THE GAP The Sir Peter Ustinov Television Scriptwriting Award is designed to motivate novice writers worldwide, and offer them the recognition and encouragement that might lead to a successful career in television scriptwriting. Entrants are asked to create a completed half-hour to one-hour English-language television drama script.
This year’s winner, from the UK, is Hannah Westall for her script, Mind the Gap. After a long obsession with storytelling of all kinds, particularly television, and achieving a First-Class Honors in her BA Journalism, Media and Cultural Studies degree, Hannah realized she wanted to be a Screenwriter. She started writing in 2015, when she became Deputy Head of Comedy at the Cardiff University Student Television Station: CUTV. After graduating, Hannah decided to undertake the MA Screenwriting program at London College of Communication. Open to Non-US Citizens (Dual Ciizens included) aged 18-29, entrants submit a 1 minute video on this year’s theme “Stand Up For Peace - Everyday Heroes in these troubled times”. This year’s winners are: Dear Peace, Raphadu Maphoto (South Africa) The narrative revolves around a young boy who reflects on what peace means to him. The youth plays a pivotal role in shaping the world that we live in, therefore, in these troubled times, the value of peace increases as it is a commodity to society.

Devil’s Ivy, Wa Liu (PR China) Devil’s Ivy is a short film on the challenges and opportunities for peacemaking in the time of the COVID-19 pandemic. As the invisible coronavirus speeds across the globe, it reveals issues embedded in our society long before the contagion. However, quarantine has also made us cherish the warmth of family bonds and mutual cooperation across nations. After all, resilience and compassion are the foundation of our humanity. 2020 SEMI-FINAL ROUND OF JUDGING
This Summer, the Semi-Final Round of Judging for the 2020 International Emmy® Awards competition took place mostly online, for the first time. From June to September, 26 Member companies hosted Jury panels. Our Hosts span 20 Countries: Argentina, Australia, Austria, Brazil, PR China, Cyprus, Denmark, France, Germany, India, Mexico, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, Russia, Singapore, South Korea, Spain, Sweden and the United States. The online judgings were powered by the Frame.io video review and collaboration platform. Semi-final Rounds of Judging are not only a crucial step in the judging process, but also a great networking opportunity for the Host, and for Jurors invited to participate in the competition. Jurors, selected by the Academy in collaboration with the Host, are television professionals involved in all sectors of the industry. Hosts have the opportunity to choose from two options: to organize a judging with sole branding for their company or to have outside sponsors for their event and become an International Emmy World Television Festival Sponsor.
