The International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences is honored to welcome and recognize the 2019 International Emmy® Award Nominees at the annual Nominee Medal Ceremony.
The ceremony also features a presentation of the Sir Peter Ustinov Scriptwriting Award, and the JCS International Young Creatives Award. To find out more about these awards please see pages 28-29.
The two official representatives for each nominated program will receive a Nominee Medal & Certificate for outstanding achievement in their category. Being nominated means joining a select group of television producers and executives who have made it through a rigorous and global competition with three rounds of judging and over 1000 jurors involved. Moving forward, Nominees will always be part of Emmy® history.
The recognition of the 2019 Semi-Final Round of Judging Hosts and their important contribution to the judging process also takes place during the ceremony. Between June and September of this year, 29 Semi-Final Round of Judging events, hosted by Members of the International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, were held around the world.

ARTS PROGRAMMING MODERATOR: GERRIT MEIER Gerrit Meier is the CEO of Red Bull Media House, a global media company on a mission to inspire and entertain with compelling and unexpected narratives and home to Red Bull TV (Sports Emmy® Winner “Stratos”), Terra Mater Factual Studios (“Sea of Shadows”, “The Ivory Game”) and Red Bull Films ( “Any One Of Us”, “The Dawn Wall”, Emmy® Award Winner “Blood Road”). Meier has been active in global entertainment for more than 20 years with a long-term focus on music, culture and lifestyle content at companies like BMG, EMI, iHeartRadio, and WWE. He holds a master degree from Harvard University and lives with his wife and children in Salzburg, Austria.
BEST PERFORMANCE CATEGORIES MODERATOR: PATRICK CONNOLLY Patrick Connolly is Senior Vice President of Programming and Marketing for AMC Networks International. He is responsible for acquisitions, planning, global strategy and scheduling of linear and VOD programming, as well as promotion planning and on-air creative for AMC Global and SundanceTV Global. He also oversees marketing activities for the AMC and SundanceTV brands internationally alongside the company’s locally recognized channels in various programming genres in more than 130 countries.
COMEDY MODERATOR: POLA HEMPOWICZ Pola Hempowicz is no stranger to unprecedented success, record breaking numbers and challenging status quo of the Polish TV industry. Enthusiastic entrepreneur specializing in content strategy and monetization, socially engaging marketing campaigns and business development. She’s been running Comedy Central channels in Poland since 2016, tailoring the best and funniest experience for the Polish audience, both on air and online.
DOCUMENTARY MODERATOR: STEPHEN SEGALLER Stephen oversees all original national programming for Thirteen/WNET, including Amanpour and Company, Nature, Great Performances, American Masters, PBS NewsHour Weekend and Cyberchase, among others. In 20 years at Thirteen/ WNET, Stephen has supervised 250 hours of documentary programming and more than 1,000 hours of news programming. He created the international documentary series Wide Angle, the weekly newsmagazine Need To Know, and the investigative journalism series Exposé.
DRAMA SERIES MODERATOR: MARC LEVY Marc Levy is the author of 20 novels, published in 49 languages. With over 45 million copies sold worldwide, he is the most read French author alive today. After winning the hearts of European readers, his success expanded to countries across the globe, from China and Russia to the US. Steven Spielberg acquired film rights to his first novel If Only it Were True. The movie, Just like Heaven, starring Reese Witherspoon and Mark Ruffalo, was a #1 box office hit in America in 2005. Three of his novels are currently in development for TV and film. He is based in NY and is a dual French / American national.

NON-SCRIPTED ENTERTAINMENT MODERATOR: SEAN COHAN As President of Wheelhouse Entertainment, Cohan is responsible for driving content and marketing initiatives across multiple businesses and platforms. Prior to Wheelhouse, Cohan served as President of international & digital media at A+E Networks, where he worked for nearly 15 years. He was responsible for international brands, services, and content, and domestic digital activities, including sites, apps, digital-first content, distribution and licensing, from History to Lifetime. He is a graduate of Harvard College and holds an MBA from Stanford University.
NON-ENGLISH LANGUAGE U.S. PRIMETIME PROGRAM MODERATOR: EDGAR SPIELMANN Edgar is a dynamic turnaround C-suite leader adept at business strategy transformation, innovation, and multicultural marketing in the Latin American media space. As the former EVP and Chief Operations Officer of Fox Networks Group Latin America, he directed entertainment content strategies, premium business development, original productions and digital to consumer deployment to position the company as a market leader in the region. TV MOVIE /MINI-SERIES MODERATOR: SAM DAVIS An Emmy Award-winning producer, Sam is the co-founder and CEO of Rowboat since January 2010. After working at 20th Century Fox, he founded his own company, then head the TV Movie Department at RTL Television from 1993 until 1998. While at RTL, he was responsible for the development and production of about 100 TV-movies and miniseries. In 1998, he became a partner and Co-CEO of Zeitsprung, and from 2004 until 2009, he took charge of the German Fiction department of Endemol Germany. In 2013, Sam won the International Emmy for “A Day for a Miracle”.

2019 SIR PETER USTINOV TELEVISION SCRIPTWRITING AWARD WINNER: VIOLET MACDONALD, THE WOLF. The Sir Peter Ustinov Television Scriptwriting Award is designed to motivate novice writers worldwide, and offer them the recognition and encouragement that might lead to a successful career in television scriptwriting. Entrants are asked to create a completed half-hour to one-hour English-language television drama script.
This year’s winner, from the UK, is Violet Macdonald for her script, The Wolf. Violet Macdonald is an Australian/British writer living in Montreal. She grew up on the island of Tasmania, where she spent her time writing hundreds of poems and short stories, some of which would see her go on to win accolades such as the Ted Hughes Young Poets Award, the H.E. Bates Short Story Award, and the title of reigning Australian Junior Bush Poetry Champion. She moved with her family to London in 2009, at the age of 15. After finishing her studies in English Literature and Philosophy, she became an award-winning copywriter for global marketing agencies. Violet moved to Montreal in June 2019, where she plans to pursue her dreams of creative writing full time.

Open to Non-US Citizens (Dual Ciizens included) aged 18-29, entrants submit a 1 minute video on the theme “Stand Up For Peace”. This year’s winners are: P.E.A.C.E. - A Spoken Word, Funke Alafiatayo (UK) Written and performed by Funke Alafiatayo, this Spoken Word challenges the audience to think what could happen if they took one minute to stand up for peace.

It Starts Within, Artes Ferruni (Albania) The world has many problems and issues. Sometimes it can feel overwhelming to stand up for peace. Where does one even start? This video explores and emphasizes a very simple, yet crucial, answer to that question. Peace comes from within and the effects of inner peace are how we can stand up for peace. Next to Me, Breech Asher Harani (Philippines) When the Battle of Marawi happened in the Philippines in 2017, many Muslims migrated from Marawi to Mindanao. The migration caused children to transfer schools where they were bullied and discriminated against, especially in non-Muslim communities. This short story is inspired by the struggles that young Muslims face and the young heroes who stand up for them.
