About Guatemala Guatemala (from Náhuatl: Quauhtlemallan, “place of many trees”) is a country situated in the far northwest of Central America. Guatemala has an area of 108,889 km², with an approximate 17 million inhabitants. The official language is Spanish, although around half the population speaks other languages as their native language. These include 21 Maya dialects and the Xinca and Garifuna languages. Known as the Land of the Eternal Spring, Guatemala nature provides the perfect weather conditions for many species. The flora and fauna are rich and extensive thanks to the varying altitudes of its land. Guatemala is a natural paradise and one of the biodiversity hotspots of the world. It counts with 37 volcanos, high concentration of mountains, rivers, tropical and dry forests, waterfalls, caves and beautiful beaches. Not to forget the over 20 big lakes and lagoons, including Lake Atitlan, guarded by three volcanoes and for many one of the greatest lakes in the world. Guatemala is the Heart of the Mayan World. Its history goes back four thousand years, when the Maya civilization emerged. Living in the jungle, the Maya were surrounded by aqueducts, temples, pyramids, palaces. The remaining of these constructions can be found in Tikal National park in Petén, declared as UNESCO World Heritage, a place with natural and cultural importance. Guatemala´s greatest charm is the people you will meet, who will welcome you with a big smile, kind and friendly and willing to help you in anything you need.
About Antigua Capital of the former captaincy general, Antigua Guatemala was once the most important seat of Spanish colonial government between Mexico City and Lima, Peru. Founded as Santiago de los Caballeros de Guatemala in 1527. It survived natural disasters of floods, volcanic eruptions and other serious tremors until 1773 when the Santa Marta earthquakes destroyed much of the town. At this point, authorities ordered the relocation of the capital to a safer location region, which became Guatemala City, the county’s modern capital. Some residents stayed behind in the original town, however, which became referred to as “La Antigua Guatemala”. Antigua Guatemala is noted for the ruins of colonial buildings that make it a museum of Spanish colonial history. Near the central plaza, several of the principal buildings of the colonial capital still serve public functions. Other numerous ruins of churches, convents, monasteries and other religious and public structures were rebuilt and now serve charming places for tourists to visit. As well, one of the first universities in Central America, was established in Antigua, the building now houses the Museum of Colonial Art. The city was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1979. Antigua Guatemala is one of the main touristic sites that everyone should visit in Guatemala. It has several modern and colonial styled hotels, restaurants, museums and nightlife. It is one of the safest cities in Guatemala, safe and small enough to walk around the city and be enchanted by its cultural and architectural treasures.
Theme Event In a world that is growing each day in population, health services are needed to improve in order to cover the needs of that population. In the 21st century, at least half of the world’s population still does not have full coverage of essential health services. Universal Health Coverage –UHC– means that all individuals and communities can receive the health services they need, with the full spectrum of essential, quality health services, from health promotion to prevention, treatment, rehabilitation and palliative care. UHC enables everyone to access the services that address the most important causes of disease and death, and ensures that the quality of those services is good enough to improve the health of the people who receive them. Achieving UHC is one of the targets the nations of the world set when adopting the Sustainable Development Goals in 2015. Improving health services coverage and health outcomes depends on the availability; accessibility and capacity of health workers to deliver quality people-centered integrated care. We as IFMSA Guatemala, strongly believe that UHC can become a reality in our country if the new generations of medical practitioners are taught in bringing a quality health care to the people. That’s the main reason we are motivated to create the SRT Guatemala 2018, under the slogan “Health for everyone, everywhere”.

As medical students, future physicians and active members of our communities we follow this desire to achieve human rights and freedom for all. Tolerance, diversity and a strong belief in human rights education are three pillars of SCORP that together enable us to pursue this desire. The TNHRT is the most important part of the capacity building in SCORP, creating ambassadors for human rights and humanitarian value within healthcare and broad community, in all regions of IFMSA; and now there is this incredible opportunity in Central America and Caribbean. Daniel Sierra - IFMSA Guatemala TNHRT Coordinator Hello there green hearts! Welcome to the first TNHRT in Central America and Caribbean. We have created an amazing training for you to learn, enjoy and remember forever. We cannot imagine a better, prosperous and just society for all its members, if we do not think beforehand about the respect and fulfillment of human rights. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights begins with what may be the most humble and beautiful words of any international agreement: "all human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights". We cannot think about achieving Universal Health Coverage without considering that all humans, regardless of any individual characteristic, are equal in the right to access a dignified health care. This is our motivation for this TNHRT, to understand the importance of Right to Health as a basis for achieving prosperity and Universal Health Coverage, in celebration of the 70th anniversary of Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Hope this experience mark your life forever, and define your work in SCORP. See you soon!

Venue
Cooperación Española - Antigua Guatemala The Spanish Cooperation Training Center in la Antigua Guatemala is one of the four units abroad of the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID), responsible for coordinating and implementing cooperation activities in the specific field of training. This Center is located in the old College of the Society of Jesus, founded in 1582. This Jesuit block comprised three cloisters and a temple, in which around twelve Jesuits lived. The main function of the school was training, in large rooms, libraries, classrooms and rooms. It acquired great importance as a cultural and educational center during the years it remained open. From 1767 - the year in which all the Jesuits were expelled from the lands of Spain - the College was disabled and over time several earthquakes destroyed its structure. For years, what little remained was used as a textile factory, school, cantonal market, etc. In August of 1996 the spaces that were previously abandoned came back to life again, boosting the social and cultural activity of the city and expanding its scope of action to the entire Latin American region. The Center was opened in 1997, and since then has hosted hundreds of training opportunities. This Center is the perfect venue for our SRT. You will be transported to the Colonial time, within colorful walls, resplendent gardens, cobbled streets, patios and fountains.
