AFFORD YOUR JOURNEY FINANCIAL AID

We believe that study abroad is within reach for every student, so we’re committed to helping you identify funding sources. We can assist you with your financial aid transfer, and we offer a wide range of scholarships and grants to help defray the cost of studying abroad.

Many students don’t realize that financial aid can help pay for study abroad. Pell Grants, Stafford Loans and PLUS loans can apply to your IFSA-Butler program. College grants and scholarships, Perkins Loans, state grants and loans, and 529 plans may also be used for study abroad, but you’ll need to ask your home campus financial aid office about their policies for transferring these types of aid.

VETERANS BENEFITS

If you are a recipient of the Post 9/11 GI Bill, you may use your tuition benefits for study abroad. This process can differ among U.S. colleges and universities, so you will want to start the conversation early with your home campus study abroad office to determine the best billing procedure for your institution.

WORK-TO-STUDY GRANT PROGRAM

Gain some work experience and earn spending money while you are abroad! With the Work-to-Study grant, students complete projects for IFSA-Butler in exchange for a stipend between $300 and $1,000, depending on the scope and involvement of the projects completed. These grant opportunities are available to all students, with special consideration to those already on federal work study at their home campus. Work-to-Study positions are determined by current and frequently changing project needs at IFSA-Butler, but could include: • Marketing and communications • Graphic design • Photography and videography • Peer advising • Research • Creative writing

MINIMUM GPA: 2.75 (4.0 scale) SPANISH LANGUAGE REQUIREMENT: 4 semesters of university-level Spanish or equivalent LENGTH OF PROGRAM: 6 weeks, late May to early July

ACADEMIC HIGHLIGHTS • Students take Advanced Spanish and choose one or both optional program courses worth 3 U.S. semester credit hours each

HOUSING IFSA-Butler arranges housing with a carefully selected host family. The program fee includes two meals per day Sunday through Friday and one meal on Saturday. IFSA-Butler houses only one student per family for maximum cultural and language integration.

Program Curriculum Revolutions in Biomedicine is a fourweek program held at Imperial’s South Kensington and Hammersmith Hospital campuses. Instructors from the college’s Faculty of Medicine will lead students through eight topical modules, plus an eight-day lab project contributing to the development of effective viral vaccines. INTERNSHIPS AND DIRECTED RESEARCH In Pune, students have the opportunity to participate in a full-time, four-week internship to fulfill their field component requirement. Interns are placed in Indian, joint-venture, or foreign-owned non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and companies working in the fields of microfinance, business, women’s rights, education, environmental protection, public health and civic engagement. Placements are typically finalized after students arrive in India.

Students who choose to pursue directed research as their field component are paired with a faculty member appropriate to their academic area of interest, such as performing arts, journalism, tribal, environmental or women’s issues, public health, or text-based historical research, and are expected to produce a formal research paper. Research students have regular meetings with faculty guides in their subject area to discuss the formation and execution of their research plans. All directed research projects are subject to the interest and availability of faculty and may require prior relevant coursework.

HOUSING All students live with a host family and consistently rate their homestay experience as one of the most important aspects of their time in Pune. As a university town, Pune has many families who are accustomed to renting rooms to students, and every effort is made to find placements according to student preference and availability. Field Excursions Courses are offered at one of the U.K.’s top biomedical research centers. Field experiences include a visit to medical microbiology laboratories and practical laboratory work at the Centre for Molecular Biosciences within the Biomedical Sciences Research Institute.

Mérida, also known as “La Ciudad Blanca” because of the widespread use of white limestone and paint, is one of the safest cities in Latin America and holds the distinction of having the lowest crime rate in Mexico.

INTERNSHIPS A business and arts internship associated with the Edinburgh Festival is a required component of this program. Internships are available in a wide range of fields related to the arts, including entertainment and production, stage management, public relations, marketing and venue management. Interns will interview for their placements upon arrival in Edinburgh and will be matched with their employers prior to the start of the festival. Interns will be supervised by a University of Edinburgh faculty member and will also write a 1,750-2,000 word research report related to their internship.
