YOUR FUTURE SELF THANKS YOU

TOM CLIFTON CO-FOUNDER, ANIMOTO ST. CATHERINE’S COLLEGE, UNIVERSITY OF OXFORD, 2001

“Study abroad gave me self-confidence for sure, but also, the ability to confront and assimilate other cultures, ideas and ways of thinking. Almost every job demands social skills, adaptation, self-awareness and the fortitude to withstand fluctuating environments. Studying abroad helps with all of these. It teaches you the skills of building trust and friendships, listening and comprehending and communicating effectively with people who don’t always understand you.”

FUTURE-FOCUSED STUDY ABROAD More than just an opportunity to see the world, our programs integrate critical lifelong skills designed to help you achieve your goals. This is the essence of Future-Focused Study Abroad. IFSA-Butler offers more than 100 dynamic study abroad programs in 53 cities across the globe. Comprehensive academic, personal and logistical support allows our students to focus on making the most of the experience. Through our local staff experts, our students develop insider knowledge of the local community. Internships, directed research options, volunteer opportunities, community-based learning and our signature Exploring Community & Culture course all facilitate critical skill development. Many of our programs are based at preeminent institutions abroad offering direct access to academic departments distinguished as leaders in their respective disciplines, while other programs offer IFSA-Butler courses taught by local experts. All programs are structured to engage students and promote growth. The choice to study abroad is one of the best decisions you can make. You are sure to thank yourself for the opportunity to interact with another culture and learn about yourself in the process.

In today’s competitive job market, every ounce of experience counts. You can maximize your study abroad adventure by combining classroom work with directed research, communitybased learning, volunteering or an internship. These opportunities will give you even greater exposure to your host community, enhance your intercultural skills and look great on a resume!

DIRECTED RESEARCH With the help of a faculty guide, you will create a research project that will serve as a tangible and meaningful product that showcases your commitment to your academic topic.

COMMUNITY-BASED LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES Community-based learning opportunities carry academic credit while providing a chance for active involvement in your host community.

AFFORD YOUR JOURNEY FINANCIAL AID

We believe that study abroad is within reach for every student, so we’re committed to helping you identify funding sources. We can assist you with your financial aid transfer, and we offer a wide range of scholarships and grants to help defray the cost of studying abroad.

Many students don’t realize that financial aid can help pay for study abroad. Pell Grants, Stafford Loans and PLUS loans can apply to your IFSA-Butler program. College grants and scholarships, Perkins Loans, state grants and loans, and 529 plans may also be used for study abroad, but you’ll need to ask your home campus financial aid office about their policies for transferring these types of aid.

VETERANS BENEFITS

If you are a recipient of the Post 9/11 GI Bill, you may use your tuition benefits for study abroad. This process can differ among U.S. colleges and universities, so you will want to start the conversation early with your home campus study abroad office to determine the best billing procedure for your institution.

WORK-TO-STUDY GRANT PROGRAM

Gain some work experience and earn spending money while you are abroad! With the Work-to-Study grant, students complete projects for IFSA-Butler in exchange for a stipend between $300 and $1,000, depending on the scope and involvement of the projects completed. These grant opportunities are available to all students, with special consideration to those already on federal work study at their home campus. Work-to-Study positions are determined by current and frequently changing project needs at IFSA-Butler, but could include: • Marketing and communications • Graphic design • Photography and videography • Peer advising • Research • Creative writing

Welcome to China! Alive with tradition, innovation, artistic heritage and rapid modernization, this country promises an intense and unforgettable study abroad experience.

SHANGHAI In the last century Shanghai has experienced exponential growth from its origins as a colonial trading port to a bustling metropolis and global financial hub. A laboratory and model of urbanization, Shanghai also represents the environmental, economic and social challenges that are mirrored regionally, nationally and globally. With a growing population, rising lifestyle expectations and continuing industrial production, Shanghai is ideal for students to immerse themselves in Chinese language and society, study currents of international trade and finance or explore questions of sustainability and urbanization.

Participate in Oxford traditions such as punting (boating) on the Rivers Isis (Thames) and Cherwell. Oxford is also conveniently located for visiting some of England’s best-known destinations, including the Cotswolds, Warwick Castle, Blenheim Palace and Stratford-upon-Avon.

BRIGHTON A graceful, cosmopolitan seaside resort with a liberal attitude, Brighton is one of the U.K.’s top vacation destinations. This vibrant city is full of entertainment attractions and is popular with arts lovers thanks to its annual arts festival, the largest in England. Brighton has also become famous for its plethora of quaint shops and eclectic stores. 28

Welcome to our programmes in England. We are thrilled you have chosen England as the site of your study abroad experience and are confident you will all enjoy the unique challenges and pleasures of negotiating the cultural differences which exist between our countries. We may share (sometimes distantly) a common tongue, but we hope you will discover much that will excite and confuse, delight and challenge. From the exciting urban expanse that is London to the charm of Cambridge, from our much maligned weather to our pub culture — England has it all. No matter what your interests or passions, the staff in the London office are here to aid, abet, mentor and help you achieve the best from your time on the other side of the “pond.” Long may the “Special Relationship” continue. Sincerely, Lynne Alvarez, Senior Resident Director, England Programs and all the IFSA-Butler staff in England Andrew Williams, Senior Resident Director, Oxford and Wales Programmes

INTERNSHIPS AND DIRECTED RESEARCH In Pune, students have the opportunity to participate in a full-time, four-week internship to fulfill their field component requirement. Interns are placed in Indian, joint-venture, or foreign-owned non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and companies working in the fields of microfinance, business, women’s rights, education, environmental protection, public health and civic engagement. Placements are typically finalized after students arrive in India.

Students who choose to pursue directed research as their field component are paired with a faculty member appropriate to their academic area of interest, such as performing arts, journalism, tribal, environmental or women’s issues, public health, or text-based historical research, and are expected to produce a formal research paper. Research students have regular meetings with faculty guides in their subject area to discuss the formation and execution of their research plans. All directed research projects are subject to the interest and availability of faculty and may require prior relevant coursework.

HOUSING All students live with a host family and consistently rate their homestay experience as one of the most important aspects of their time in Pune. As a university town, Pune has many families who are accustomed to renting rooms to students, and every effort is made to find placements according to student preference and availability. Baruch haba! Welcome to Israel! Ours is one of the most intriguing countries and cultures in the world, and it’s also a great place for study abroad. Israel has it all: terrific weather, friendly people, amazing food and a unique culture not found anywhere else in the world. Best of all, modern Israel is a splendid mixture of ancient and new. The world’s three major monotheistic religions have their heart in Jerusalem, so history and faith abound from all corners. At the same time, however, twenty-first century Israel is as contemporary and developed as any European or North American society.

MEXICO

Language and Cultural Studies in the Yucatán Medical Spanish and Public Health in the Yucatán

MÉRIDA The capital and largest city of Yucatán, Mérida lies in sharp contrast to many Americans’ stereotypes about Mexican cities. The city is compact and tranquil, yet also a cosmopolitan center of culture in southern Mexico. It’s also famed for having a relaxed attitude and student-friendly atmosphere. Colonial Spanish architecture adds to Mérida’s beauty and personifies the city’s long history, while a thriving Mayan influence shows in the local language and dress. In your spare time, take advantage of free evening concerts and Mérida’s exciting nightlife.

WELCOME

FROM OUR RESIDENT DIRECTOR

Mérida, also known as “La Ciudad Blanca” because of the widespread use of white limestone and paint, is one of the safest cities in Latin America and holds the distinction of having the lowest crime rate in Mexico.

It is a living laboratory of ancient cultures still present today through architecture, language and amazing cuisine with contemporary Mérida as a lively center. The city’s combination of the great Mayan civilization with Spanish colonial traces will transport you to a time and place difficult to imagine until you experience it. This program will allow you to change the single story of Mexico. Through different experiences, courses, faculty, friends, local families, travel and exposure to life here, you will be able to challenge old myths, break stereotypes and redefine identities. You will go from being a tourist to becoming a traveler; from seeing to observing and from being a bystander to making connections. IFSA-Butler will make sure you are exposed to the best cultural and academic offerings for the summer and also give you the opportunity to experience diversity firsthand by contrasting some of the world’s famous archaeological sites with cities as amazing as Mexico City, Chiapas and Havana, Cuba. We cannot wait to show you all this! Sincerely, Diana Arízaga, Resident Director and all the IFSA-Butler staff in Mexico
