Message from Head of School Dear IGBIS Parents and Community Members, Near the end of 2016 we informed our school community of the IGBIS vision and mission which were revised after input from staff, students, parents and the school board. Key differences in the vision statement are ‘to provide an innovative international education that inspires learners to make a positive impact on the world’. At IGBIS we are proud of the innovative practices seen in our classrooms, shared learning spaces and the technology that

supports them. Likewise, our students are showing innovation in their learning and the special projects that they engage in such as the PYP Exhibition in Grade 5, the Community Project in Grade 8, the Personal Project in Grade 10 and the ToK and Extended Essay in Grade 12. These projects inspire students of all ages to in turn make a positive impact on the world through action and service.

Security Bracelets Each day there are many students who forget to bring their security bracelets to school or, in a few cases, have lost their bracelets. Parents are asked to remind their children to ensure they have their bracelet before they leave home each morning. If the bracelet is lost, payment of RM50 can be made at the Finance counter for a new one.

welcome to view all six pieces on display on Level 5 and use a QR reader on your phone to access information shared by students about the process and what they have learned. IB PYP Grade 5 Exhibition Launch Simon Millward PYP Coordinator ............................................................................................... At the end of last week the Grade 5 students started conversations around what the IB PYP Exhibition is. Much of those initial conversations centred around alleviating concerns about the whole process.

Watch for further updates as the IB PYP Exhibition unfolds over the coming weeks. The IB PYP Exhibition is an independent study that all PYP students engage in during their final year of elementary school. Students are supported by mentors on their journey.

Written By Sumire Uenishi Grade 11

Students identify an issue that they are interested in delving deeper into. They inquire into it and then share their learning with their parents, the school and the wider community. The hope is that this will lead them to taking some sort of action.

The IB PYP Exhibition is an independent study that all PYP students engage in during their final year of elementary school. Students are supported by mentors on their journey. During International day on the 25th of March, there will be a book donation to help refugee students in the Achiever’s Academy. Any genre of English language children’s picture books and novels will be accepted. There will be a booth in the gym, where books can be dropped off. The purpose of this donation is to assist the refugee students in improving their literacy skills through reading. Please bring your books and contribute to this cause.

The dates for this years IB PYP Exhibition sharing are Wednesday 26th and Thursday 27th April. In the photographs students have listed what their interests are, identified issues that can impact themselves, the home, the community and globally, and students are engaging with the transdisciplinary themes that provide the knowledge framework of the PYP.

ESOL Tips for Parents Lucy Ashdown ESOL Teacher ............................................................................................... Student Support Ideas for supporting students’ language development at home. ++ Build your child’s first language by talking about their day, discussing the charts, pictures, graphs, etc. from the texts they are using. ++ Discuss concepts in your first language, so that students have a solid foundation to add to. ++ Encourage reading of many different sources – comics, graphic novels, advertisements, magazines, signs, billboards, etc. ++ Relate the new information to their past: this helps build connections. ++ Encourage your child to join one of the many after school activities that are available.w You may want to check out these sites as well: http://en.childrenslibrary.org/ - This site contains children’s books from around the world and can be read in many different languages.

Basketball The U15 girls held their nerve in their final match against BSKL to clinch the silver medal at the KLISS basketball cup final. With just seconds remaining, IGBIS held onto a slender one point lead. BSKL then forced the turnover before taking the ball back down the court. The Phoenix girls were extremely relieved to watch all the BSKL shot in the last two seconds

spill out of the basket. The buzzer sounded and was met with a loud cheer from the girls and the supporting students, teachers and parents. Earlier Mr Arcidiacono and the U15s encountered a team they had previously met in the preliminary round. On that occasion Taylor’s International School got the victory 11-8. This time the result was very different with the IGBIS girls taking the game 16-7. The second match of the afternoon was against HELP who ended up the eventual overall champions. Our girls pushed them all the way but they were just too strong. Congratulations to Mr Arcidiacono and the U15 girls on becoming our first KLISS Cup medallists in 2016/2017. Mr Woon and the U18 boys basketball team travelled to BSKL for a friendly game as they prepare for the upcoming IGBIS Invitational tournament on Saturday 11th March. The team has reflected on their recent SEAFA tournament and used video footage from the tournament to help them work on many facets of their game. The team’s recent homework must be working as they were too strong for BSKL winning 59-39.

Football The U9 boys football team, coached by Mr Millward and assisted by Ernest Ng (Grade 11), played their football plate final at Nexus. After a string of narrow losses at the preliminary tournament, the team played some inspired football in their opening game against Tenby and finished 2-0 victors in that game. Full of confidence, the team went on the attack against KTJ and put all their training into action. A flurry of goals for the Phoenix saw us come away with the win 4-0. The boys tried their hardest in their final game but were outplayed by a strong Nexus team. Thanks Mr Millward and Ernest for making training so much fun for the boys.

The U9 Boys with Mr Millward and Ernest - joint KLISS plate winners.

In our school’s first visit to the KLISS cup finals for 2016/2017, the U9 girls football team travelled to BSKL. Our girls ran and ran against bigger and stronger players. We managed to score a goal and save many more! A great effort in the middle of a massive thunderstorm! Thanks to Ms Deb for coaching and guiding the team! Ms Blakeway and the U11 girls football team competed at the KLISS plate finals. The girls demonstrated fantastic team work and determination to come away from the tournament with two wins and one loss. Well done team!

The team are all smiles after two away wins.

Ultimate Frisbee Tournament Scott Cameron Ultimate Frisbee Coach ............................................................................................... On Saturday, February 25th, IGBIS took 17 player to UCSI Springhill (near Port Dickson) to compete amongst seven other teams in an annual invitational ultimate frisbee tournament. IGBIS sent one of its strongest and most complete teams, comprised of both male and female athletes. Leaving the school around 7:30am, we arrived at UCSI at 9:00am. Jeffrey and Ting Jie were selected to represented IGBIS as team captains and did an outstanding job attended team briefings, explaining tournament rules, organising spirit circles and games, and they were the first point of contact between other schools regarding timing, scores, and other technical issues. We offer huge congratulations to these two dedicated members of the club for taking on this extra responsibility and doing an amazing job. Our first game was against the host team from UCSI. After going down 2-0, IGBIS stormed back and won easily with a score of 5-2. We next took on Stella Maris, a school which we had previously beaten a number of times. Despite a strong effort, things did not go our way as both the offence and defence made numerous and uncharacteristic mistakes. We finished the round-robin with a 1-1 record and luckily progressed to the winners bracket and the semi-finals. Due to our seeding, we played the number 1 ranked team, and the tournament champions from the last 3 tournaments, Arrows. After starting the game lethargically and going down 4-0, the IGBIS athletes upped the intensity of play and stormed back to tie the game 4-4, before excelling further to

8

take a 5-4 lead. This stretch of play was some of the most inspired, skillful, and hardworking play demonstrated by any IGBIS team in the last 3 years. In the end, Arrows’ skill and speed took over and they won the game 9-6. Disappointed we would not be playing in the finals, IGBIS had a rematch against Stella Maris for 3rd place. The students came out on fire, wanting revenge against the earlier loss. Despite feeling the heat, and experiencing some cramping and overall tiredness from the day, IGBIS easily defeated Stella Maris with a final score of 7-1. I was immensely proud of how our students represented IGBIS and, more importantly, upheld one of the founding pillars of ultimate frisbee - Spirit of the Game (SOTG). There is a much higher emphasis placed on SOTG in ultimate than others sports, as ultimate is a self-refereed game, even at world and national levels. Below are some examples of SOTG: ++ Informing a team-mate if you think they have made a wrong or unnecessary call or caused a foul or violation ++ Retracting a call when you no longer believe the call was necessary ++ Complimenting an opponent for good play or spirit ++ Introducing yourself to your opponent ++ Reacting calmly towards disagreement or provocation ++ Holding spirit circles and spirit games The students of IGBIS regularly exhibited these traits and were voted by their peers as the team which consistently embraced the highest level of spirit. A huge congratulations to the students who represented IGBIS at this event. We cannot wait to host the next tournament.
