Message from Head of School Dear IGBIS Parents and Community Members, The two Staff Professional Development days this week were an excellent opportunity for our staff to focus on the school Child Protection policies and undertake a training course on this topic as well as on Differentiation Strategies for different learners in the afternoon. There was also training provided by the Council of International Schools (CIS) and New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC) visitors to ensure that staff were aware of the accreditation protocols and associated standards.
As part of our Health and Safety programme, a lockdown drill was undertaken in school last week. While we hope that it is never necessary to invoke a lockdown, we would like to make sure that all of our staff and students know the procedure. Although the drill ran quite smoothly, administrators gained some valuable feedback to assist us in improving the procedure in the future.
During November 1-4 the four visitors from CIS and NEASC met with a cross section of staff, students and parents. They also conducted classroom observations to determine how well IGBIS is doing compared to the accreditation standards. The verbal feedback to date has been very positive. The school will receive a written report from CIS and NEASC in the coming months.
A reminder to everyone that our Sports Day will take place on Wednesday, November 9. Students will take part in their House teams and wear the associated colours of red, blue, yellow and green. Parents are most welcome to come and support this event.

News from Elementary School There were many excited, but exhausted, cross country runners returning from their trip to Nexus International School on Friday. Quite a few proudly wore medals around their necks and had stories of how hard the course was and how hot and tired they were. Congratulations to everyone who competed and represented our school.
On occasions l have some students who want to make after school playdates by requesting to use the school phone to call their parents. I am sure you will be pleased to know that we do not condone this and advise those students that playdates need to be discussed and arrangements made at home by both parents.
Sports Day is scheduled for next Wednesday morning. Students are asked to wear green, yellow, blue or red shirts to reflect their team color. Please see further details in your child’s class newsletter.

Hello everyone from very busy, messy and creative Art Rooms! Early Years are currently inquiring into Sharing the Planet and are exploring shapes, colours and patterns amongst different plants and animals. Kindergarten students are now finishing a large community art project with one class finalising wall hangings and another completing a mural. Grade 1 students are exploring a construction project entitled ‘What does home look like to me?’, making lanterns that demonstrate their understanding of form, colour and shape. Students in Grade
2 are now enquiring into the role of storytelling in art and how Aboriginal art and artists can tell stories through symbols, colours and lines. Grade 3 students are enjoying developing a piece of ‘Artwear’, based on developing their knowledge, understanding and appreciation of one of the elements of art, through the creation of a piece of headwear. Construction skills are also a strong focus in this standalone unit. Sustainable robots that support and help the IGBIS community in some way, is a design brief undertaken by Grade 4 students. The teamwork required for this artwork develops excellent collaborative approaches to learning. Students are currently focusing on

finalising designs for a life-sized prototype. Finally, students in Grade 5 are questioning portraiture ‘Me, Myself and I’ is an inquiry into how artists use many methods to depict the human form developing specific drawing and observation skills. The process of developing an idea when creating and responding to stimuli is a strong element running through all units this semester. Finally, thank you to so many parents for the opportunity to share your children’s achievements at parent-teacher conferences. It was great to meet so many of you! News from Secondary School Our accreditation visit from CIS and NEASC concluded this week on a high note as the visitors attended classes and met with teachers, parents and students. Afterward, the visitors shared with me how impressed they were with so many aspects of our school, but in particular how impressed they were with our students! The types of conversations our students have in these situations are true examples of the Learner Profile in action. The visitors commented that students spoke thoughtfully, reflectively and passionately about our school and community values. The visitors commented further that our parents echoed these sentiments; I am grateful to all of our students
and parents who participated. Lastly, visitors commented about the excellent teaching practices they witnessed, all the way through to our Diploma Programme classes. This is a testament to the expertise of our teachers in delivering the rigorous IB curriculum in a manner that utilizes best practice teaching principles. Well done everyone!

On Wednesday, November 9th from 8am - 12pm IGBIS will hold its second annual Sports Day. This event was a huge success last year and again promises to be a day of fun, excitement and school spirit with students from Early Years right through to Grade 12 involved. The students have all been placed into house teams that will be used to form the basis of the teams for Sports Day. Each house is associated with a colour and we encourage students to wear their house colours on the day.

We would love to see as many parents as possible at the Sports Day, as we see this as an opportunity to celebrate our school community in a fun and spirited way. Athletic News U15 Football Finals
On Thursday 3rd November, the U15 Girls travelled to ISP for the KLISS Football Plate Final. The IGBIS girls have demonstrated tremendous improvement throughout the season and they should be proud of their progress. The team was a largely made up of girls playing competitive football for the first time. These students embodied the IB learner profile attributes of being Risk Takers and Open Minded, as they sought new experiences at school and embraced learning new skills and movement patterns. Whilst the girls didn’t come away with a trophy, they did manage to score a goal and challenge the other teams at the tournament. Well done to Jesse Murison, Angela Chua, Serene Salam, Ro Xzi Ho, Lara Maccagno and Nyneishia Bhasin for moving outside their comfort zones, trying something new and having some fun along the way.

Parental Consent for Athletics Events
Parental consent is an important organisational process whenever an athletics event is taking place. Parents will be informed about the date, venue, times and other event-specific information such as what the students should bring with them and the student pick-up or drop-off locations. By providing consent, parents are communicating to the school that they have read and understood the information. Importantly, providing consent for an athletics event also ensures that IGBIS staff can act quickly in the event of an injury or medical emergency. When seeking consent, an email will be sent to parents school email accounts. The email will contain all the important information about the event and a link to the consent form. This online system will help streamline the consent process and remove the need to print dozens of consent forms which can go missing in school bags and lockers. It would be appreciated if all parents could regularly check their parent email accounts and complete event forms promptly. If a student cannot participate for any reason, the form still needs to be completed, but simply select the option ‘Will not be attending this time’.

IGBIS staff, parents and friends are always encouraged to come and support the IGBIS Phoenix when they compete in tournaments or events. Our final events for Season 1 are as follows: • Wednesday 9th November - U9 Boys Benchball finals at IGBIS.

• Wednesday 9th November - U9 Girls Benchball finals at Taylors International School. The U15 boys hosted the KLISS Football Plate Final and it proved to be a challenging afternoon for our boys. After dominating possession and going so close to scoring on a number of occasions, the IGBIS team conceded a heartbreaking last minute goal in their first game against ISP. A couple of injuries early in Game 2 meant that the team had to play the remaining 40 minutes without any substitutions. They fought valiantly against some very strong opposition and managed to display some pleasing moments of quality football, but the injuries took their toll and we finished the finals without a win.
