Message from Head of School Dear IGBIS Parents and Community Members,

The whole school community came dressed in green and red for the Christmas assembly on December 6th. The spirit of giving, caring and friendship was evident in the student and staff performances. Along with the singing and dancing, there was a lot of fun too! Our student councils and supporting teachers are to be commended for the work they have done on this theme, as well as the assembly itself. Now it’s time for us all to have a well earned holiday. We hope that everyone enjoys a wonderful festive season with lots of good cheer! Merry Christmas!

Anne Fowles Head of School

From the Elementary Principal First of all a huge congratulations to all of the performers at the Christmas assembly. The variety of performances was wonderful and the atmosphere was certainly festive.

This was just a small part of what they wrote, they detailed the reasons for their choices and linked them back to the approaches to learning skills as they used their maths in a real-life context.

On Wednesday after the Christmas assembly the students from grades 2 - 5 were engaged in an authentic maths challenge. The Grade 4 students wrote to me explaining their process - The whole of Grade 4 bought seven items with our money. In our items we have included six brain teaser games and one Solar-bot.

This week we are saying goodbye to four of our associate teachers, Ms. Sarah, Grade 3 & 4; Ms. Huei Yin, Grade 5; Ms. Xu Xuan, Early Years: and Mr. Ilham, the arts. They have had a positive impact on our school and although we are sad to see them leave we wish them success in their future careers.

Grade 4 wanted to have brain teaser games to give us more options for Can Do tasks when we finish our Must Do tasks. We wanted the Solar-bot because we wanted to use it for our coding.

We have a few students who are also leaving IGBIS and we wish them all the best in their new schools.

Our process of going through to choose the best items for the class was quite long. First we had to write down lists of items that we saw at the Bazaar and also write the price of it. Then we went back to class and added up the total of all our items. After that we put all our items on the smartboard and started eliminating the items that weren’t so good. Then we had a list of items we wanted and we bought them.

I hope you have a happy, safe and fun holiday and we look forward to seeing you all after the break on Wednesday 3rd January.

Simon Millward

Elementary School Principal

News from Secondary School The Secondary Student Council students did an amazing job of planning and coordinating the Christmas assembly - well done! From the artistic style of the slides to the performances themselves, the theme of “Christmas beyond borders” came through wonderfully, due in no small part to StuCo and all of the performers. That was a wonderful way to wrap up the last week of school before the holidays.

This last week was indeed quite hectic as many subject areas concluded this period of time with summative assessments. This means that our first semester reports are right around the corner, coming out in January. Students had the opportunity to think about their progress until now, as they wrote their reflections this week in homeroom lessons. It is now time for some rest and relaxation for our students!

Congratulations are also due to our MUN club, who hosted an internal MUN event on Monday. Students as young as Grade 6 participated, and the MUN-ers are getting ready for a few conferences (including EOSMUN - hosted at IGBIS) in the new year.

I wish everyone a safe and enjoyable holiday - see you on January 3rd!

Michael Arcidiacono Secondary School Principal

Host Nation news Ms Sarah, Ms Xu Xuan, Ms Jas, Ms Meena, Ms Carol, Ms Ada, Ms Huei Yin Elementary School Host Nation Team ............................................................................................... We’ve had a busy time in Host Nation classes throughout Elementary School and everyone deserves a nice break after all their hard work. Kindergarten students have been exploring Malaysian Traditional Games through play and hands on activities. They have looked at “Congkak”, “Teng-teng” (hopscotch), “Sepak Takraw” (rattan ball), “Wau” (kite), “Gasing” (top spinning) and “Batu Seremban” (five stones). They enjoyed making their own Wau (kite) and singing the “ Oh Wau Bulan”

Grade 2 students have been learning about parts of the face through games. We looked at Malaysian stories that teach values and tell the stories in different ways such as role playing and shadow puppets. We looked at how Malaysians celebrate Christmas and listened to the story of Christmas. In the joy of the holiday season, we made cards/gifts to exchange among friends. Grade 3 and Grade 4 students have been looking at different local desserts from Malay, Chinese, and Indian cultures. They made onde-onde, fruit custard, as well as tang yuen. They enjoyed making them as they were able to taste the foods themselves. We wish everyone a wonderful Christmas break and hope students look forward to more Host Nation fun in the new year.

Grade 1 students have also been exploring traditional games played in Malaysia, looking at the features and the way to play the games themselves.
