Message from Head of School Dear IGBIS Parents and Community Members, It was great to see so many families at the Back to School night on Monday evening. The session about the MYP Certificate presented by Mr Darryl Harding (MYP Coordinator) and our invited guest, Faizol Musa (Development and Recognition Manager, Bangladesh, Pakistan and South East Asia) was particularly well attended. Mr Harding will share the main points of the presentation with parents and a follow up discussion has been arranged for September 4th at 8.00am in the PVO room, to answer any further questions. The ‘Mix It Up’ afternoon on Tuesday was the perfect example of the family-like community that has been built at IGBIS. Secondary School students from each grade level were assigned to work with Elementary School students to read a story and create a collage based on the IB Learner Profiles. In some cases I think the Secondary School students learned from the younger students. In any case they all enjoyed the opportunity to work together on a task and valued the chance to get to know each other more. Our next major event is our whole school assembly for Malaysia Day on Wednesday, September 14th. Have a wonderful weekend ahead.

News from Secondary School Dear parents,

Our Back to School Evening and Whole School Mix-It-Up were the great highlights of this week, and it feels like we are getting into the "routine of school", as we complete our third week. This year as a school we are focussed on developing the "approaches to learning" skills - which are: Communication, Research, Social, SelfManagement, and Thinking. Students develop and demonstrate these skills in so many different ways. Participating in the Mix-It-Up is one example, where secondary students take responsibility for communicating and socialising with the younger members of the community. All while having fun in the process! Camps is another way: students develop their social and self-management skills as they work together to participate in activities and overcome challenges. In short, one of the great benefits of an IB education is that we focus on these transferable skills, or life skills, which are developed not only in the traditional content area lessons but in so many other areas as well.

News from Elementary School First of all thank you to all of you who came to our Back to School evening on Monday 20th August. It was great to see so many attend and hopefully you learned a lot from all of the sessions on offer. If you have follow up questions please don’t hesitate to contact the classroom teacher as they are what there to help you to understand what is happening in the classroom. On Tuesday we had our annual ‘Mix it up’ activities where the students from both Secondary and Elementary came together to interact and get to know each other better. They were dressed in ‘warm clothes’- for a ‘Warm Welcome Back to School’. They read together and then created a picture or collage to show how one of the characters in the book demonstrated one of the IB Learner Profiles. It was wonderful moving between all of the classes and listening to the conversations they were having and seeing their creation take shape. Be sure to keep and eye out for some of the creations around school. A big thank you to everyone who made this event a success. Since our last Day 5 and the Elementary school assembly there have been elections taking place to decide on who would be selected on to the Elementary Student Council. I am pleased to announce the new members for the council this year: Grade 2: Archie and Grace Grade 3: Arlo, Eliqha, Rafael and Alia Grade 4: Dan, Nina, Antonia and Aisya Grade 5: Isaac, Kimaya, Nathan, Keita, Annie, Ghazi

Mr. Rowe, Mr. Harvey and Ms. Aga will be guiding these young minds to make a difference. Dates for your diaries • Thursday 30th August: Grade 1 field trip • Friday 31st August: Holiday • Tuesday 4th September: ES assembly • Monday 10th and Tuesday 11th September: Holiday • Friday 14th September: Malaysia Day assembly, 2pm Theatre

PVO News Julie Arcidiacono Instrumental Music Academy Coordinator

.................................................................................................................... We had over 100 parents show up for our New Parents Coffee last Friday. It was lovely to see familiar faces and meet new ones, many of whom are keen in actively participating with our Parent Volunteer Organisation (PVO). The morning began with parents joining in a unique Wake Up Shake Up - a capoeira ginga, led by our Early Years’ teacher Mr. Mike Dziobkowski and his two children. We then briefly went over PVO meeting dates, and upcoming PVO-related events. We wrapped up with a fun Kahoot! game where parents were quizzed on how well they know the school. Grade 11 parents won the challenge and got to take home a little souvenir as a reward.

e-waste and battery collection E-waste is any electronics equipment that is no longer useful, either because it is damaged or has been replaced. Often this consists of phones, computers, household appliances, etc. Rather than let these items accumulate around your home, or throw them into landfill (where they should not go), IGBIS has established an e-waste collection point near the turnstiles on Level 2. Simply drop off any e-waste or batteries and we will discard them correctly for you.
