IB Middle Years Programme Introduction The International Baccalaureate (IB) Middle Years Programme (MYP) is a challenging curriculum framework for students aged 1116 years of age. The MYP is being implemented in more than 1000 schools in over 100 countries. IGB International School is fully authorised by the IB to offer the Middle Years Programme. IB World School share a common philosophy a commitment to high quality, challenging, international education that IGB International School believes is important for our students. The Middle Years Programme is learnercentered and teaches students how to become independent, lifelong learners by developing inquiry and approaches to learning (ATL) skills. The programme fosters responsible attitudes and encourages principled action. The MYP curriculum framework provides a broad and balanced education with rigorous learning objectives in eight subject groups: Language Acquisition

Language & Literature

Individuals & Societies

Sciences

Mathematics

Arts

Physical & Health Education

Design

Conceptual Understanding Concepts are big ideas that have significance within and across subject groups. MYP students use concepts to inquire into issues and ideas of personal, local and global significance. The MYP prescribes sixteen key concepts that are transferable across subject groups and have relevance in life beyond school: aesthetics

change

communication

communities

connections

creativity

culture

development

form

global interactions

identity

logic

perspective

relationships

time, place & space

systems

While the key concepts provide breadth of understanding across subjects, the MYP also prescribes twelve different related concepts for each subject that provide depth of understanding within a subject. Learning in Context Students learn best when learning experiences are connected to their lives and to their experience of the world. These connections bring academic studies to life and help students create meaning. MYP students explore six prescribed global contexts to develop increasing understanding of their common humanity and shared guardianship of the planet: identities and relationships

personal and cultural identity

orientations in space and time

scientific and technical innovation

fairness and development

globalization and sustainability

MYP Subject Overviews Middle Years Programme schools consider local, regional and national requirements and the specific needs of their students as they develop their school curriculum within the MYP framework. This document presents the IGBIS subject overviews for 201617 which indicate the units that students will study in each subject group and where the key and related concepts and global contexts will be developed.

English Language Acquisition

The study of additional languages in the Middle Years Programme (MYP) provides students with the opportunity to develop insights into the features, processes and craft of language and the concept of culture, and to realize that there are diverse ways of living, viewing and behaving in the world. Language Acquisition teaching and learning is organized into six phases. The phases do not correspond to particular age groups or MYP year levels. Students do not necessarily begin in phase one – they can begin at any phase, depending on their prior experiences, and may exit from any phase on the continuum.

Students use a wide range of digital, physical and print resources to develop knowledge, skills, attitudes and conceptual understandings. They work individually and collaboratively to develop transferable approaches to learning (ATL) skills. Students are assessed by teachers using a variety of assessment strategies and tools.

Sciences

The Middle Years Programme (MYP) Sciences framework encourages students to investigate issues through research, observation and experimentation, working independently and collaboratively. Sciences incorporates traditional disciplines of biology, chemistry and physics alongside elements of environmental, sport, health and earth sciences. Modular sciences units are interdisciplinary and explore concepts, skills and processes from two or more science disciplines. As they investigate real examples of science application, students will discover the tensions and dependencies between science and morality, ethics, culture, economics, politics and the environment.

Students use a wide range of digital, physical and print resources to develop knowledge, skills, attitudes and conceptual understandings. They work individually and collaboratively to develop transferable approaches to learning (ATL) skills. Students are assessed by teachers using a variety of assessment strategies and tools.

Mathematics

In the Middle Years Programme (MYP), Mathematics promotes both inquiry and application, helping students to develop problem solving techniques that transcend the discipline and that are useful in the world beyond school. The MYP Mathematics framework encompasses number, algebra, geometry and trigonometry, statistics and probability. Students in the MYP learn how to represent information, to explore and model situations, and to find solutions to familiar and unfamiliar problems. These are skills that are useful in a wide range of arenas, including social sciences and the arts.

Students use a wide range of digital, physical and print resources to develop knowledge, skills, attitudes and conceptual understandings. They work individually and collaboratively to develop transferable approaches to learning (ATL) skills. Students are assessed by teachers using a variety of assessment strategies and tools.

Each unit is designed to develop increasing understanding of a broadbased key concept and of one or more subjectspecific related concepts. The concepts add breadth and depth to the subject knowledge and skills. Each unit is taught within a global context that connects learning with life beyond the classroom. Grade

Design

As part of the Middle Years Programme (MYP), Design challenges all students to i) apply practical and creative thinking skills to solve design problems; ii) explore the role of design in both historical and contemporary contexts; and iii) consider their responsibilities when making design decisions and taking action. MYP Design focuses on a holistic design process rather than final products and solutions. Integrated design combines digital and product design.
