Message from Head of School Mrs Anne Fowles, Head of School Dear Parents and Community Members, There have been so many developments since I last wrote that it is hard to know where to begin! Since moving into the school building we have completed the fit out of nearly all of the main classrooms, the libraries, science laboratories, drama and music rooms and the Early Years centre. Open Week Over 650 people visited us during our Open Week with many of them commenting on the impressive size and design of the school. We were particularly delighted to be able to host our enrolled students and their families and to see the school come alive with children.
Teacher Profiles Many of our families have been asking for an outline of the profiles of our incoming teachers. These are outlined later in our newsletter and will soon be on our website as well. As you can see, we have a remarkable line up of highly experienced international teachers. Summer School If you haven’t had a chance to sign up for our summer school yet, please do so either with a paper registration form available through our school office, or even better using the online forms following the link or scanning the QR code below: http://www.igbis.edu.my/index.php/newsand-events/summer-school/ The IGBIS Summer School is being run by our own teachers who will be here ready to set up classes in early July. Geelong Grammar Visits IGBIS We were delighted to host a visit from Mr Stephen Meek, the Principal of Geelong Grammar School, this week. Please read the article about the visit later in the newsletter. For those of you about to complete your school year, we are thinking of you as you go through that difficult time of saying farewells to teachers, students and friends. We hope that you have a relaxing summer vacation and we look forward to seeing you here at IGBIS in the weeks to come.
Principal of Geelong Grammar School Visits IGB International School Mr Stephen Meek, Principal and Mr Anthony Bretherton, Director of Community Relations Geelong Grammar School (GGS) visited IGB International School during their visit to Kuala Lumpur recently. Mrs Anne Fowles said the visit by Mr Meek and Mr Bretherton was very significant. “We have alumni amongst our IGBIS founders and key individuals within the IGB Group so you could say IGBIS has “Geelong Grammar Genes” in its foundations. We hope that IGBIS and GGS could cooperate in many areas in the future.” The Chairman of IGBIS, Mr Lister Hannah, was both a student and former Principal of Geelong Grammar School, and a member of IGBIS Board of Directors, Mohamed Tawfik Ismail, is a GGS alumni. Tan Boon Lee and Tan Boon Seng from IGB Corporation Berhad are also GGS alumni.

News from Elementary School Mrs Claire McLeod, Elementary School Principal Meeting so many visitors during our recent Open Week, guiding them through some of our school and sharing our vision for IGBIS was extremely rewarding. During the 10 days of Open Week, IGB senior management, enrolled and interested families, as well as business, embassy and media visitors toured some of the facilities. Visitors gained an understanding of the size of the school and the wide range of sporting, music, art and drama rooms we have as well as the modern, light and open classrooms. Children quickly noticed the sofas and beanbags in and around classrooms, they expressed delight with our Elementary School library and they were in awe of our huge main pool, soccer pitch and sports hall/gym.
Many interested parents ask about our staff and I am always very happy to confirm that we have exceptional teachers joining IGBIS. Most teachers were hired before December last year, after we advertised internationally. All Elementary School teachers are experienced educators, having taught IBPYP in international schools in Asia; a number we have worked with previously and many have worked together in past years. Some are IBPYP workshop leaders and school visitors trained to assess if schools are ready to be authorised to teach IBPYP. As an IB World school we will be providing on-going professional development for our staff to ensure they remain up to date with current research on how best students learn, how understanding the brain has an impact on designing appropriate activities and
assessment and specific subject based professional development. Overseas hired teachers receive a two year contract with the opportunity to extend by mutual agreement. From talking with our teachers all seem very keen to settle here in KL for a while. A number of our teachers have families and have expressed an interest in becoming part of the wider school community and view Malaysia as a wonderful location to further their profession and raise their children. Aside from their professional experience and qualifications, our teachers are simply lovely people, caring and sensitive to the needs of a broad and diverse school community and all are extremely excited to be joining us. Some will arrive early and be part of Summer School whilst others will arrive later in July ready for an extensive orientation.
I met many families on our database during Open Week; however, for those who have not yet visited the school and who would like to know more about IGBIS, I encourage you to contact Admissions and make a time to meet our team and ask the questions that are pertinent to you. Until next time.

News from Secondary School Secondary Matters Mr Lennox R. Meldrum Secondary School Principal It has been a great month here at IGBIS – not only have we moved into the administrative offices on campus, we have also had our enrolled families visit our facilities during our Open Days. While it was fantastic to see students quickly making new friendships and exchanging contact details with their future classmates, one particularly rewarding experience was when our first graduating class had the opportunity to meet each other. Our Grade 11 students for the 2014-15 academic year gathered on the morning of May 31 for a presentation on their upcoming Diploma Programme subject choices as well as the university application process in which they will soon be involved. Our school counsellor, Mrs Pauline Davidson, presented an overview of what our students need to consider when selecting universities and courses of study. The main theme of Mrs Davidson’s presentation is that communication is the essential core of the process. At IGBIS we begin discussing possible courses of study and professional education portfolios as early as Grade 8 when students are looking at options for their final two years of their middle years schooling. During Elementary School and into Secondary School, we help students develop a portfolio of their work each year that is presented during our student led conferences in semester two. This is a special day where students have the opportunity to discuss their portfolio with their parents, showing not only their academic successes but also pieces of work where they have learned from trying something new or from feedback from their teachers and peers. These portfolios can also show progression in skills, areas of difficulty that the student has tackled, or how the student has developed new approaches to learning or exhibited attributes of the IB Learner Profile. It is a wonderful way for students to express their own learning and for parents to see how our programmes develop students both within and beyond the traditional subject content.
Mrs Davidson also talked with the Grade 11 students about the many aspects to be considered in choosing a university. Apart from country, course, and cost, there are lots of other options that can influence the application process. •
Is the university a public or a private institute?
•
Single-sex or co-educational?
•
Urban or rural?
•
What additional activities and clubs does the university offer?
•
Is the learning style practical, coursework based, or framed around research investigations?
•
What facilities does the university have?
•
Is boarding available? What is the academic year?
•
How big are the class sizes?
•
What is the experience of the professors and mentors?
With over 2000 universities across the globe accepting Diploma Programme graduates, there are a wide variety of institutes and students and their families are encouraged to look into the many options.
As students move into higher grades in Secondary School, we start to shape the portfolio into a professional representation of the student skills and successes that can be used in the university application process. It also assists Mrs Davidson and our teachers in their discussions with students and their families about particular areas of strength and interest that could be a focus of further education. The constant communication between families, students, and the school develops a strong framework for decisions on what and where to study after leaving IGBIS.
At IGBIS, we support all of our students in many ways and the university selection and application process is one example. If you wish to find out more about this process, please feel free to contact Mrs Davidson at pauline.davidson@igbis.edu.my
