4 MIDSOMER NORTON LIFE
Midsomer Norton Mens’ Walking Football Club
M
idsomer Norton Walking Football Group is a wellattended, friendly group of “old codgers” who enjoy each other’s company, kicking a ball about in the fresh air in all sorts of weather, before putting the world to rights over coffee. The sport was initially aimed at men aged 50+ with no upper limit and targeted at those recovering from physical and mental illness, encouraging them to integrate and be part of a well-being group. The Midsomer Norton team was founded in 2015 by Angelo Ruiz with just a handful of players but has grown through the years and now has around 50 players on the books. Many of our players are recovering from various surgeries, cancer, hip and knee replacements and also those needing support and friendship. We meet at Midsomer Norton Sports Centre every Tuesday and Thursday morning between 10 am and 12 noon, using two pitches for an hour session. There is a social game, which is for the less mobile and players recovering from injury and a competitive game for the more active.
As well as meeting for fun and friendship, the team also raise funds to help local causes, including purchasing a wheelchair for a local child in need and getting donations for the Midsomer Norton Food Bank. Want to join us? In the first instance, come down to watch us in action and talk to the players, who will be delighted to welcome you to the group.
