You can also view The Wheel on the council’s website at www.radstock-tc.gov.uk.

Welcome to this Autumn edition of The Wheel.

Summer took its time arriving this year, but with the sun came some fantastic community events happening across our Town.

it seemed that every weekend had something going on, whether it was the Radstock Fayre, Writhlington dog show, community days in Writhlington and Haydon, events held by Somer Valley Rediscovered and the Active Way, the park Run in Radstock every Saturday morning and the amazing sessions and events run by the Old printworks, there was something for everyone.

i particularly enjoyed the Tom Huyton park Day, held as part of national parks week, which saw the launch of the latest phase of improvements to our town centre play park. Over 300 people came along during the day, to see a range of events and take advantage of the new equipment. Thanks go to all the amazing groups and individuals that made these events and others possible. They make our town special and a great place to live.

Summer also brought the judging for the annual britain in bloom competition. individuals and groups have spent months making our town look its best with amazing floral displays and we wish them every success.

You will have hopefully noticed a refreshed design to this edition of the Wheel, including the Town Council’s new logo and branding. This has launched alongside our updated website: www.radstock-tc.gov.uk, and our booking website and calendar for our new Trinity Hub: www.hallbookingonline.com/trinityradstock/ calendar.php.

We are also working on a new communication strategy for the Town Council, to help involve the whole community in decisions that affect our town and develop effective two-way dialogue with residents and other key stakeholders.

please visit our updated website to explore these new features and stay connected with all that’s happening in our community.

Enjoy the rest of your summer.

Radstock Town Council are thrilled to announce the purchase of Trinity Hub, a new Community Hub for Radstock. Many residents and local groups supported early consultations, giving views on how to use the space.

With the introduction of the cultural programme and holding the incredible Take Art events, use of the space over the last year has really helped shape and visualise the future designs.

The latest plans aim to keep the space flexible and user-friendly for a variety of activities and community use. Whilst the full-scale design may need to be staggered for financial purposes. Funding already obtained will support the essential works and implementation of design works.

Your New Community Hub will feature:

• Multipurpose Rooms: Flexible spaces for meetings, classes, and events, equipped with state-of-the-art technology.

• Library and Resource Centre: The existing community library will move into the new centre, allowing the Town Council to transfer existing resources and funds to ensure the new building is sustainable.

• Art and Cultural Spaces: Galleries and performance areas to showcase local talent and foster cultural enrichment.

The new hub will embody our commitment to creating a vibrant, inclusive space where all residents can connect, learn, and grow. Over the last 2 years, time has been spent investigating how best to upgrade the building.

new architectural designs look to maximise the flexible space and works will be prioritised to focus on essential roof repairs and ensuring the building is compliant. Some funding has already been obtained through the UKSpF funding but the Town Council, along with the strong partnership support of bath and north East Somerset Council, are committed to apply for further grants to support the full cost of the project.

A phased approach to the works will help ensure the building remains available for existing users and allow works to be completed once funding is available. The hope is to move the existing operation into the new facility in 2025.

The booking website is now live at www.hallbookingonline.com/trinityradstock and if you want to follow the progress, please do visit the Town Council website.

Radstock Youth Hub is always buzzing with activity! Our Alternative Education programme offers essential support to around 30 young people who cannot access mainstream school or college. in addition to this, we run various youth club sessions in the evenings, providing a safe and engaging environment for local young people. The Hub’s prime location within the community also makes it an ideal space for other organisations to use, fostering a vibrant and collaborative community spirit. Here is just a small glimpse into what we have been up to recently!

Street doctors

We were thrilled to welcome Street Doctors to Radstock Youth Hub recently, where they provided invaluable training in emergency first aid to our young people. The sessions were a great success, resulting in the participants receiving certificates in resuscitation and recovery. This vital training not only equips our youth with essential life-saving skills but also empowers them with the confidence to act in emergencies. be sure to keep an eye out on our social channels to be up to date with the latest sessions we are offering outside of our usual schedule.

radstock Zoo

in May, a dedicated team of young people worked tirelessly to bring an entire zoo to life! From building the set to crafting unique animal puppets, their hard work ended in an unforgettable showcase at the Radstock Fayre on Sunday, June 2nd. The project was designed to be flexible, allowing participants to choose their level of involvement, whether as behind-the-scenes artists or front-of-stage zookeepers. This approach provided a wide range of opportunities for everyone. We’re already looking forward to returning next year with an even bigger and better project!

New monday project

After the success of our Saturday projects over the past few months we have decided to continue them, however, they have now moved to a Monday evening. The latest project will involve young people being able to make their mark on their community. part of Radstock Youth Hub has been allocated to be the canvas for a mural designed and painted by local young people. We think it is important for young people to feel that the space is a safe one that they can be proud of. The sessions run every Monday 4:30 - 6:30pm for ages 11-13 (must be in secondary school) or up to 19 with SEn

Tuesday, 1st October: ‘The Trafalgar Way’ by Kathy brown

The Trafalgar Way tells the story of how the news of the british victory at the battle of Trafalgar, and the death of the british commander, Vice Admiral nelson, reached London in an age before modern communication technology.

Following the battle of Trafalgar on 21st October 1805, Vice Admiral Collingwood, who took over command on the death of nelson, sent a dispatch (report) to the Admiralty in London confirming that The british navy had won the battle. This dispatch was entrusted to Royal naval Officer Lieutenant John Richards Lapenotiere, Commander of HMS pickle.

His sea voyage was beset with bad weather, after which he came ashore at Falmouth and hired a post Chaise (a four wheeled horse drawn carriage) to take him to London, a journey of 37 hours. Kathy brown of The 1805 Club will recount this fascinating story.

Tuesday, 5th November: ‘Death and Service’ by richard Cooper-Knight

This talk takes place in november, the month we remember our fallen war heroes.

Richard Cooper-Knight is an author, photographer and genealogist. Richard’s research into the service personnel behind the seemingly anonymous names carved into the granite of the Commonwealth War Graves of Somerset, has led to a wealth of stories of family and tragedy; each name is brought to life with their own individual history.

This research includes the stories behind those heroes whose names can be found on War Graves in the Midsomer norton and Radstock area.

All these illustrated presentations will take place at the Somer Centre in Midsomer norton at 7:30pm until 8:30pm, followed by questions and a raffle until 8:45pm. Entry is £5 cash or card on the door, no booking required. Raising funds for Somerset Coalfield Life at Radstock Museum

ChiffONNADE by TEATrO 4 GArOUpAS

A planetary sphere rolls across the stage, or is it perhaps an ark or a cocoon house?

A dancer glides between the folds and wrinkles of fabrics, between the waves of chiffon scarves, silk... Growing up is a metamorphosis. To blossom, to come out of the chrysalis, to discover, to fly... Chiffonnade speaks of emancipation, of the pupa of a child who grows without ceasing to become an adult.

Love Radstock, in collaboration with Take Art rural touring, are proud to present Chiffonnade by international company Teatro 4Garoupas at Radstock Trinity Hub on Monday 11th november at 11.00am.

The company are making a special visit to Radstock following a run of performances at the Egg Theatre in bath. The performance is suitable for children aged 1-6 years old.

Tickets are priced at just £3 per adult (children free) and are available on the Take Art website at www.takeart.org/event/chiffonnade.

i AmDram is a musical comedy memoir by writerperformer-comedian Hannah Maxwell. The show offers a unique blend of influences from theatre, performance art, stand up, spoken word and musicals.

Hilarious and touching, Maxwell’s solo storytelling has charmed audiences across the UK and Australia, in theatres, festivals, pubs and village halls. it is nonchalantly queer, because she is. There’s a bit of song and dance. Your mother would love it.

The story covers her family’s intense history and love affair with amateur musical theatre, Hannah’s final show with them (My Fair Lady in 2010) and the subsequent tension and distance she feels when revisiting this world as a London-based lesbian live artist.

The summer months have offered a great chance to see Haydon batch in all its flowery glory. Once again, we have recorded two different species of orchid (Green Winged and bee), and the vibrant blue Vipers bugloss, all set against the yellow backdrop of the birds Foot Trefoil, the purple Knapweed and the white Wild Carrot.

Somer Valley Rediscovered have organised various community events over the summer, including a 6-week Tai Chi course and a drumming session to welcome in the summer solstice, both of which were very popular. Cam Valley Wildlife Group have been gathering valuable data during regular butterfly surveys and the Somer Valley Rediscovered naturewatch volunteers enjoyed an informative grassland identification training event in August.

Over the coming months, Somer Valley Rediscovered will be working with Radstock Town Council on plans for some woodland management work in the plantation areas around the edges of the batch and access improvements, including path works, new seating and interpretation. Join us for a free cup of steaming hot tea or coffee and a slice of delicious homemade cake on the last Monday of every month.

According to Age UK, more than 2 million people in England over the age of 75 live alone, and more than a million older people say they go for over a month without speaking to a friend, neighbour or family member. it’s shockingly easy to be left feeling alone and vulnerable, which can lead to depression and a serious decline in physical health and wellbeing.

The team here at Ammerdown care greatly about tackling loneliness in the local area. We have set up a monthly support group in an attempt to form

a safe and welcoming environment for individuals to come and talk to others and enjoy afternoon tea and cake in our beautiful facility.

please phone the centre on 01761 433709 or visit the What’s On page on our website to book.

1 in 3 of us experience trauma at some point in our lives, whether we are survivors of childhood abuse or domestic abuse, have gone through a complex bereavement, or have experienced a serious assault, accident or a critical incident.

Almost half of trauma survivors go on to develop serious mental and physical health problems as a result. Anxiety, depression, eating disorders, addiction, family breakdown and social isolation are all common responses to trauma. Without support, the impact can last for years or even decades, and can also have a ripple effect on family, friends, colleagues and workplaces.

Trauma breakthrough are local charity offering FREE support to survivors across the South West through specialist counselling and therapy, group support and activities at our support centre in bath, but we also want to improve access to mental health support and help people living outside the major towns and cities in the area – places like Radstock, Midsomer norton, paulton, Shepton Mallet and other parts of Somerset and Wiltshire. Thanks to the generous donations from Mendip & District Round Table, Midsomer norton Town Council and Radstock Town Council, we have just finished running a pilot mental health skills

programme based at Hope House Surgery in Radstock – giving people the knowledge and skills to look after their wellbeing when life feels overwhelming.

We hope that from the success of this first phase, and with your support, we will be able to develop the project into a full satellite service offering counselling, groups, support planning, and wellbeing services for local survivors in mental health crisis.

We believe that people living with the impact of trauma recover best in community, so we are particularly keen to partner with businesses and community organisations in the area to extend our reach and help people where they already live or work. Whether you are an individual, or involved with a business or an organisation, if you would like to help us – either by supporting us financially, through volunteering, or in other practical ways, please get in touch by emailing services@ traumabreakthrough.org or give us a call during office hours on 01225 984637. We look forward to hearing from you.

Many residents will be aware that the Town Council is preparing a neighbourhood plan for Radstock. All town and parish Councils have the opportunity to prepare such a plan which should express the priorities of residents. They are a valuable planning tool because when adopted, have the full weight of the planning system. The plan is being prepared by an enthusiastic and knowledgeable team of volunteers who form the neighbourhood planning Group.

The team has representatives from across the town and meets monthly to progress the plan. As a retired planner from b&nES, i have been on the neighbourhood planning Group for about 6 months, and i have been very impressed with the zeal, knowledge and dedication of the team.

Having undertaken a survey of local residents’ priorities in 2023, the Team is now making good progress in preparing the plan with a target of having a draft plan ready by early next year to share with the Radstock community for comment.

Reflecting the results of the community survey, the plan focuses on 5 goals, that:

1. There are enough homes to meet local needs.

2. infrastructure and services promote connectivity and support the area as a positive place to live and work.

3. There are sufficient community spaces for activities and events.

4. Heritage and the environment are celebrated, protected, and enhanced.

5. businesses are enabled to grow and provide local sustainable employment.

The team’s current focus is on housing and whilst the community survey showed that most people see the benefit of some new housing in the town, especially to meet the needs of young people and those who want to downsize, there is a concern about the quality and location of new housing.

in response, one of the key areas of work underway is to identify and clearly set out the distinctive character and building styles of Radstock. The Team has therefore been surveying the different parts of Radstock to produce an illustrated Design Code which will be a key consideration in determining planning applications. This will help to ensure that developers understand and properly reflect Radstock’s distinctive character and heritage in their schemes.

Other areas of work are to ensure that new housing

is properly supported by infrastructure and is well related to amenities and facilities, particularly by foot or cycle where possible. To facilitate this, the team is maintaining a list of local facilities, such as schools, shops, health facilities, pubs, community halls, parks, churches and restaurants/cafes. This will help to clarify any gaps in provision and will inform the determination of planning applications for new housing and the provision that developers will need to make.

The plan will also seek to ensure that new housing is of a high quality, well designed, has sufficient space and meets the most up-to-date sustainable construction standards, particularly in energy efficiency. parking provision should be appropriate to the location and new housing proposals should well-related in scale to the rest of the town.

priority should be given to the use of brownfield sites before greenfield sites, although the evidence shows that there are very limited brownfield site opportunities in the town.

Next comes Anatomy of a fall, on friday 8th November

Anatomy of a Fall is a riveting French courtroom drama that keeps you on the edge of your seat. At the centre of the film is Sandra Huller’s compelling performance as an author accused of her husband’s murder. The ambitious plot, reminiscent of classic mysteries, unfolds through a web of lies and unreliable witnesses.

iN blOOm JUDGiNG 2024

in July of 2024, Radstock in bloom eagerly participated in the South West in bloom competition, showcasing its vibrant horticultural displays and community spirit. This annual event, part of the larger britain in bloom initiative, saw residents, businesses, and schools collaborating to enhance the town’s aesthetic appeal through creative floral arrangements and sustainable gardening practices.

Key highlights included the Haydon Community Garden, a flourishing space where volunteers grow a variety of plants, fostering community engagement and education. Additionally, Writhlington Allotments played a significant role, with local gardeners cultivating plots that demonstrate excellent horticultural skills and sustainable techniques. The Writhlington Orchid project, renowned for its unique and exotic orchid collections, further elevated Radstock’s horticultural

prestige. Another noteworthy site was Haydon batch, an area of natural beauty and ecological significance, contributing to the town’s green landscape and biodiversity.

Judging criteria encompass the quality of green spaces, the use of environmentally friendly methods, and the involvement of the community. Radstock, with its rich heritage and enthusiastic volunteers, hoped to impress the judges with its commitment to beautifying the town and fostering a sense of local pride.

The competition not only highlights Radstock’s dedication to horticulture but also strengthens community bonds and promotes a cleaner Town for its residents, traders and visitors. We look forward to sharing the results with you all in the next edition but would like to thank everyone that has supported us.

mESSAGE frOm ThE TOWN

Hello All,

by the time this magazine lands at your door, the children will be back in school! Summer feels like it’s only just started yet we’ve had so many lovely events held by so many amazing groups. in the last few months, it has been so nice to see some long-term visions start to become reality.

Time seems to fly by, yet it was two years ago that several groups approached the Town Council with concern over the loss of space for their groups to meet following the closure of the former Trinity Methodist Church.

The New Community Hub: A Centre for Connection and Growth

Following several engagement events that outlined the need for a central gathering place, designed to meet the needs of residents, we are thrilled to finally announce the purchase of Trinity Hub, a cornerstone of the Radstock Regeneration plan.

You can read lots more about this on page 6. it has been a long two years in development and we hope that you will be part of the next phase for a building that has been part of the centre of Radstock since 1902.

You make a difference

The Town Council is here to represent residents and support and signpost to available services. it is always helpful when residents help report issues by using Fix My Street or by contacting the Council. Recently, i was invited by a lovely couple to step into their world for a while. They took me on a tour of Radstock centre. Having lived in the area most of my life, i thought i knew it well; however, i do not know it from a wheelchair. it was really frustrating to see the impacts that design and infrastructure can have on everyday life.

Then, this week i met a bAnES highways officer with another resident and councillors, to talk about speeding and road safety. Many areas are impacted by speeding traffic, historical road layouts, blind corners, lack of pavements or overgrown hedges.

Whilst many issues won’t be tackled overnight and cannot be addressed entirely by the Town Council, it is useful to understand these concerns so that i can raise them with the teams that may be able to help.

You may notice my strange picture. This shows the Councillor strategy session held one Saturday morning in July, clearly showing the dedication of our councillors. Here they are sharing ideas and views of residents as well as look towards the Council’s future strategy.

We encourage you to continue to engage, participate, share feedback, and join us in future initiatives.

Thanks as always, George
